Total War: ROME II - Emperor Edition

Pacchetto campagna Imperator Augustus

Bought it, played it, hate it.
it gets dull so fast, everything seems so immensly tryhard when it comes to "re-inventing" the total war series.
rome 1 is still a hundred times better than this piece of visually appearling garbage.
in short rome 2 really is everything that's wrong with the new generation of games.
Dumbed down, childish, broken piece of trash that's somewhat visually better looking than its predecessor.
I don't know who in their right mind puts a pricetag of 50+35$ on this.

Don't waste your money and buy it on a massive dicount and see for yourself or even better... don't and wait for warhammer. total war... just make sure you preorder or you'll have fun paying for every dlc out of your ***.

i will not swear but this game is totally crap, the last total war i buy!!!!! there are some good prats like units built with general, and the tech tree, not much though!!! spies and the likes can keep and army poisoned in one place turn after turn, you cant get alliences etc but all ur enemies can, practically every tribe has better units than rome,, DEF, ATT, EVEN MORALE WHICH I FIND VERY STRANGE, and even when you get to cohorts, you would expect a little more def, att, moral more than other tribes cause thats when they became professional paid army, lol at least the first rome had that!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and dont get me started on the batlle sims, lets just say ur missile units are more dangerous to ur units than their missile units so for me i have to rate this as low as a hot place that is rumoured to be beneath, long live empire, please dont ruin that 1 like you have done with this 1, compared to the first rome this one iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiisssss absolute pants, northern european tribes with scorpions!!!!!!!!! REALLY!!!! PMSL!!!! MINUS 100/ 10, YES THATS RIGHT PEOPLE THEY HAVE RUINE THE TOTAL WAR GENRE with this 1 game, thank god i didnt buy ALL the add on games,

Why did you make a game so good but poorly optomize the game its great and all but the frame rates are all jagged and on battlefields my gpu heats up and the fans go crazy. Also the DLC spamming is absurd almost 8$ for three factions you gotta be kidding me what happend to you guys Rome total war is my personal favorite and i miss old Sega and creative Assembly where when u complete a game you get factions unlocked Thier for i won't be buying Total War Hammer unless its on a seriouse sale and all of the spammy dlc they are going to do on that game which will milk your wallets dry.

Unless you have a beefy computer do not buy this as it will make your hard drive have a heat stoke like in the middle of a august summer

The best Total War sense Medieval II. They seemed to put more effort in this one then the last couple of games. The launch was terrible but sense you're buying this game almost 3 years after the release you wont experience that. I highly recommend using mods with this game although its not needed. I give this game a 9/10 with mods. Otherwise a 7/10 just vanilla.

I was introduced to Total War only last year, and since then I have played Medievil 2, Shogun 2, Attila, and Rome 2. Of those, I have to say Rome 2 is by far the worst. While it can still be fun, the game is just a sloppy mess that tries it's best to suck the enjoyment out of itself.

We'll start with the good things. The time period is fantastic. This is Rome during the height of their power, not the shadow of glory that is present in Attila. You can re-enact the war against Carthage, you can play as the ancient Greeks or Egpyt if you like, or even try to reclaim Alexander the Great's empire as one of the successor kingdoms. As I said, the time period is great and the map size is awesome. I love how at the beginning of the campaign there are dozens of different factions trying to fight for control of the ancient world. And the game is still a Total War game, with all of the positive things that that entails.

Now onto the negative. The game is a broken, complicated mess. Mechanics don't work as they should. Fortify stance giving you +50% reinforcement range? No, it doesn't. Units tend to blob up despite the use of a "formation attack" toggle. Morale mechanics are broken, I've had units at over 50% break and route even though they were "winning decisively." Your general is useless, he will always be one of the first troops to fall if his unit is attacked no matter what angle it's from. Sometimes units won't even follow orders. I had a unit of Roman Cavalry that I was telling to attack a unit of enemy slingers. Despite the fact that they registered the order, they stopped thirty feet from the slingers and stood there. No matter how many times I told them to attack they just sat there until they finally routed from losses garnered by standing in the line of fire for ten minutes.

Other battlefield mechanics make no sense. How are slingers dropping my Super Heavy Spear Infantry locked in a shield wall from the front? Then there is the truly broken: Pikes. You know your game has severe balance issues when multiplayer rooms are usually tagged with "no pikes allowed" because Pikeman > EVERYTHING. Without a doubt. I once had a unit of heavy swordsmen in a shield wall acting as an anvil for a unit of light pikemen. I then hit those pikes from behind with a unit of heavy melee cavalry. Both of my units routed without the pikemen taking any significant losses.

The campaign map isn't much better. Buildings are overly complicated with their bonuses and negatives, turning empire-building into a game of hardcore addition and subtraction. Capturing territories is extremely slow because the public order system is designed to bog you down. Generals will pick up negative traits for idling in cities after only one turn. The "political intrigue" system is boring, time consuming, and doesn't really have any effect on the rest of the campaign. The entire game just feels...Broken. This isn't even mentioning that half of the playable factions are locked behind a paywall. So you charge me $50 for a broken game that isn't even close to the whole package, then charge me an additional $35 to unlock the rest? What a joke.

What makes this worse is shortly after I played this I bought Attila. Attila is everything that Rome 2 should have been, which is even more upsetting because rather than fix the broken piece of junk they charged everyone good money for, they went ahead and just made another game that actually worked and said, "Sorry guys if you bought the crap that was Rome 2, go ahead and buy Attila instead! It works!" Don't get me wrong, I'm not hating on CA, I understand that ♥♥♥♥ happens sometimes..And since Rome 2 they've really stepped up their game. Look at how TW: Warhammer is shaping up! Not to mention that they're walking everyone through that development every step of the way! I am, however, hating on everything that happened to make Rome 2 the piece of ♥♥♥♥ that it is today. This is the black stain on your record, CA, and you owe everyone by making sure that this fiasco never happens again.

In short, don't play this ♥♥♥♥. Either get Attila or Warhammer instead, or go with one of their older titles. Those actually work.

OVERALL: 4/10

After several patches, and with a healthy modding scene, it's a pretty great stratagy game. If you were turned off by it based on the early reception, it got a ton better so don't worry.

Attila is technically a better game, but I prefer the setting of Rome 2.

While the base game is relatively fun and balanced, it feels small. CA is holding the other 50% of the game hostage for over $90. Do NOT buy this game unless it's on Steam sale for over 50% off. I'd say the base game is worth $20 at best.

Two years later, they've fixed all the bugs; this may still be the worst game ever made.

Rome II represents an organizational failure. It marks the fall of a once-great gaming studio. They had a great, great formula, and they screwed up everything for the player.

A Well rounded game that has provided me countless hours of enjoyment (around 3000 hours).
When compared to watching a 2 hour movie for 10 dollars. I have got my moneys worth with this game.
I wish that they didn't stray into the magical realm with the new upcoming warhammer total war but I understand you have to give the players what they want even if its steam punk meets harry potter looking crap that has gears with no function what so ever.

Before this the only Total War I had real experience with was Medieval 2, and I've gotta say, I'm glad I picked this up. Thank you, franchise sale, because Rome 2 is my favorite strategy game experience ever. The world map management feels like a combination of Sid Meier's Civ V and Total War, and the research tree is a cool addition to the building. My only complaint about the world map is that it does feel a little oversimplified; definitely do your campaigns above "normal" difficulty if you want a real challenge.

Diplomacy is easier to do than ever before and it actually makes sense; your standing with a particular faction and its allies will actually affect what kind of treaties they'll enact with you, if any at all, and you're less likely to encounter random backstabbing. (Although why my client states maintain military alliances with countries I'm at war with I'll never know)

The actual battles are the same as before, with a pretty UI that tells you all you need to know and the addition of abilities - not just the formations, phalanxes, fire arrows, and stakes that we had before - but things like war cries to rally your own troops and intimidate the enemy all makes battles feel better and grittier. All the different types of battles are great too, and it's awesome having an online battle work out when you're the reinforcing navy coming rescue your teammates :P

All in all, would totally recommend this game, especially as a good starting point into the Total War franchise if you want something that's actually historical and cool

I have played all but one of the Total War games and I think this is a great addition. My only complaint is that diredting units on the battlefield can still be clunky but no more so than the other games in the series and in fact I would say it is a bit better in this edition than others.

It seems fairly well optimized for my PC, but I did have to turn down some of the graphics settings for the big battles when I had troop number maxes out. I run a GTX 760 though and I imagine if you have a 900 series card you should be able to play all maxed out. I got 121 hours of play out of this and did not even do the last scenario in Sparta. I may play that campaign later after a break, 121 hours and I think I have had enough for a bit, lol! I recoomend you get this game if you like the other games in the series. I had a great time with this.

Not worth it for fans of history and/or fans of grand strategy games unless you are willing to get multiple mods or one of the total overhaul mods for it. Look for Vae Victis, Radious' mod or Divide et Impera and perhaps some others. I prefer Vae Victis because it centers on historical accuracy and includes the ability to play every faction.

Creative Assembly used to be fairly diligent when it came to historical accuracy; but now they can't even be bothered to correct the misspelling of an important Celtic tribe of the period, the Atrebates, as Atrebartes - even after many patches and updates and multiple DLC. CA is only in it for the money now and the days when the devs loved the history enough to care about such things is long gone. It takes modders now to make CA games good, when before (in the days of Med 1&2 and Rome 1 and Shogun 2) the mods merely improved upon already good games.

Total War used to be a great series. But I regret having bought this game. So much that I will never touch a game from CA ever again.

- setting and artwork is great
- huge worldmap

but

- game was broken for a long long time after release
- AI still is
- performance is abysmal
- extortionate DLCs

Do. Not. Buy.
