"To the Moon, too!" Comic+ DLC released!

Hi all, hope the year's wrapping up well!

We're excited to release this little comic project, "To the Moon, too!":

http://store.steampowered.com/app/418890/

The comic itself is available in its web-sized version on Freebird Games' site for the public, but this package offers the full-sized digital booklet, bonus content, and helps to support the project (that is now completed). c:

It also offers a rebate for more than its cost if any merchandise (To the Moon music boxes, printed comic book) is purchased from https://freebirdgames.bigcartel.com/ (Orders this week should still arrive by the holidays.)

There're more details on the Steam page for it. Cheers, hope y'all enjoy it!

-Kan

P.S. I'm focusing on making Finding Paradise (To the Moon's actual "sequel") now, so new minisodes will be put on hold this Winter.

このゲームについて

Dr. Rosalene and Dr. Watts have peculiar jobs: They give people another chance to live, all the way from the very beginning... but only in their patients' heads.

Due to the severity of the operation, the new life becomes the last thing the patients remember before drawing their last breath. Thus, the operation is only done to people on their deathbeds, to fulfill what they wish they had done with their lives, but didn’t.

This particular story follows their attempt to fulfill the dream of an elderly man, Johnny. With each step back in time, a new fragment of Johnny's past is revealed. As the two doctors piece together the puzzled events that spanned a life time, they seek to find out just why the frail old man chose his dying wish to be what it is.

And Johnny's last wish is, of course... to go to the moon.

Overview
To the Moon is not so much a game as a story driven interactive narrative. The gameplay is minimal and it mainly consists of moving around, but once you get into the story, believe me, you won't give a s#!t. This is an absolutely AMAZING game that will make you both laugh and cry. Words cannot describe my experience with it. Just... Just play it.

The Pros:
  • Amazing Story - I will not spoil any details about the story, but I will vouch for it's quality. You play as a pair of scientists who work for a sort of "Make a Wish" foundation, but which use an Animus-like machine to enter peoples memories and alter them in order to grant the dying person's wish. The story is divided into three acts, and takes about 4 hours to naturally progress through. Some may argue the story elements are a bit cliche, but frankly it was so well executed and related that I cannot say that bothered me. Also, great piece of advice from me: Pay close attention to everything. Even something that might not seem relevant will prove to be a foreshadowing of a greater truth. It's worth it to pay close attention to surroundings, dialogues, scenery, anything and everything.

  • Great Characters - The characters' personality is well defined, and you will grow to like them, especially Dr. Neil Watts, one of the controllable characters, who is the comic relief of the story and does a great job. But in all seriousness, everything is so amazing about this story.

  • Amazing Music - If anyone says music in gaming doesn't impact on experience they have obviously not played this game. The music is absolutely amazing and only hearing different tracks can put you in a different mood. You can go from happy to sad to worried to sad in a few minutes.

  • Beautiful Pixel Art - The game's retro RPG style graphics is a strong point in my opinion. It makes you concentrate more on the story. Anyways, the environment is beautiful, lighting is superb and I've never admired a pixel graphics game with such attention thus far.

  • Free DLC! - So far there were two mini episodes released which you can download and play for free! Also, the OST, which is paid, apart from being beautiful, offers 50% of the profits to charity. This is DLC done right.

The Cons:
  • Resolution - This isn't about graphics, and you won't even notice, as the game really sucks you in like a good book, but I was having problems opening up the game, and instead of upscaling to full HD, the game resorts to a very tiny resolution that might cause issues to some. Also, it's 4:3, and you'll see black bars. This is most likely because of the game engine they used.

  • It ends. - At some points i couldn't wait for the story to go on so I can see what happens, and at the end I wish it didn't because I was just sobbing at the ending. Amazing.

Conclusion
This game is an excellent visual narration, and I recommend it to anyone wanting to read a great story in a great manner. The Overwhelmingly Positive reviews are truly deserved. Also gift this to people who play tough, and see if they cry at the end. I was surprised I did.

"I never told anyone but... I've always thought they were lighthouses."

There are odd, mismatching anecdotes in everybody’s life that would not absolutely mean a thing for anyone else beside a handful of people. Like an old, tattered soccer ball, an origami rabbit figure or an ugly platypus plushy... Here in this heartwarming narrative story, we are given the chance to acknowledge the sentiment hidden behind the oddity: a story of love, loss and a promise that would make a grown man shed a tear or two.

It was the middle of a storm shaken night when esteemed doctors Eva Rosalene and Neill Watts arrived on the address given to them. They argued a bit among each other - about whose fault it would be the company car getting crashed on a tree - and took off, hurrying towards the house on the cliff. They heard the lingering song resounding from a piano as they get in. Lily, the caretaker of the old man welcomed them in and asked them nervously as she was leading them towards their client: "If you wouldn't take my question the wrong way, what would be your business exactly?” Neill answered the question with a wide grin on his face before Eva had the time to say anything: "We grant wishes!” The caretaker was a bit startled by the unexpected answer, but didn't push for any more explanation. This time Eva directed the anticipated question: "What was his last wish?” Lily took a pause just long enough to catch her breath while opening the door to the master bedroom where a doctor was in attending to observe the patient's vitals, then answered: "He wanted to go to the moon..."

To the Moon is a wondrous little story about an old man and his enigmatic dying wish. Thousands of anecdotes, daily items, far forgotten dialogues and faces that belonged to a life past brought together paints a picture that you wouldn't soon forget. Ever watched Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind? Well, it's that kind of experience, plus some sense of humor inclined to be either absurd or noir, and minus Jim Carrey. It is cheesy, it is sensual, and it is heart wreckingly realistic and... It is a modern fairytale.

I mostly agree that beauty lies in simplicity. To the Moon seems to be proof enough with 16 bit RPGMaker graphics, a handful of beautiful piano songs and cartoonish figures moving around with near comical animations, yet still with powerful enough narrative and screenplay that would result in making a grown woman like me cry. I've seen Hollywood sob stories with lesser creative spark and elegance in narration compared to this one. It is weaved with odes, references and commemorations that would bring faint smiles to your face; sometimes with bitterness, sometimes with warmth.

There is arguably no gameplay aside walking around and collecting some items - and solving a folding puzzle now and then - thus, the game can either be categorized as a minimalistic adventure or a visual novel with puzzle elements altogether. For the fair warning, it certainly is not an RPG. Knowing whatever you are getting yourselves into, To the Moon is a welcome experience of 4-5 hours.

For me, it was worth every single second I spared. There are the kind of games that you'd wish you forget about, just so you can experience them for the first time all over again. This is one of them.
