The Next Installment to the Award-Winning RTS.
While many were hopeful that diplomacy would finally end the war, differing opinions on what should be done, along with the depleted power of the controlling factions, has led to a splintering of the groups involved.

The loyalist members of the Trader Emergency Coalition adopt a policy of isolation, focusing on enhanced defenses to ride out the rest of the war. Those who rebel against the coalition take on a purely militant view, coming to the opinion that the only way to bring peace is by ultimately crushing all who oppose them - especially xenos.

For the first time in their history, the war creates a schism in the Advent Unity. The loyalists seek to continue their policy of revenge against the Traders, and to assimilate all others to the Unity’s influence. However, others amongst the Advent suspect that a corrupting influence from within has diverted the Unity from its proper destiny.

The divide created in the Vasari Empire is less pronounced, but just as severe to their people. With the Vasari now practically frantic to move on to new space, the loyalist faction abandons cooperation and decides to take the resources they need by any means necessary. Having accepted the need to work together, the rebel faction feels that their best chance for survival is to work with the other races and bring them along to flee the approaching enemy.

Take the battle for galactic supremacy to its ultimate level in Sins of a Solar Empire: Rebellion – a standalone RT4X game that combines the tactics of real-time strategy with the depth of the 4X genre (eXplore, eXpand, eXploit, eXterminate).

Key features:

  • New Factions: Decide whether to play as a Loyalist or Rebel – each unlocks new technologies, ships and play styles for each race.
  • New Titan Class Warships: Mighty titans enter the fray of the war to tip the scales of power. Each faction may field their own unique titan, drawing upon unique strengths and abilities on the battlefield.
  • New and Updated Capital Ships: A new capital ship joins the fleet for each race to offer even more tactical options. Additionally, all existing capital ships have been upgraded to four levels for their abilities, allowing players to focus their ships along specific strengths.
  • New Corvette Class Ships: Small and maneuverable, each faction has developed a new light attack craft to harass enemy forces.
  • Updated Visuals: Updated graphics, particle effects, lighting and shadows, race specific UI and other enhancements make the Sins’ universe look better than ever.
  • New Victory Conditions: Take multiple paths to victory including – Military, Diplomatic, Research, Last Flagship Standing, Last Capital Standing and Occupation.
  • New Audio: More than 60 minutes of original music, countless new sound effects and dozens of new voice overs help bring the drama of battle to new levels of immersion.
  • Tutorials: New and updated tutorials make it easy for both experienced and new players to quickly start building their own solar empire.
  • Plus, a number of optimizations that provide better performance than ever before!

TL:DR? See Conclusion

INTRODUCTION:
Sins of a Solar Empire: Rebellion is a massive real-time strategy game developed by Ironclad Games and published by Stardock Entertainment. It is the third standalone expansion in the popular Sins of a Solar Empire line of games and stands as testament to why this genre can only work with the PC Platform. Although the game is classified as an RTS, it does feature a lot of 4X (Civilization type) elements which the developers are calling the 'RT4X' genre.

The player takes control of a space faring civilization whose sole objective is to be the most dominant force in the Galaxy. Achieve this either through military force, diplomatic means or economic superiority. Lead your civilization from a small single planet colony into a vast interplanetary empire spanning multiple worlds and multiple star systems.

PROS:
+ Epic in scale (The player can choose to either play in one solar system only, or expand their empire to other solar systems if the map permits)
+ Massive space combat and intense fleet engagements
+ Beautiful Graphics and Visuals
+ Good ship and space station variety
+ Ship and space station customization and upgrades
+ Complex and solid core gameplay
+ Simple and easy to manage Empire Tech Tree
+ Incorporates the features of the previous expansions without forcing you to buy them
+ High replayability
+ Seamless Zoom Function (Marvel at your fleet or the intense ship on ship combat)
+ Playable even with some lower end computers
+ Modding potential (Example: See Star Trek 3 Armada mod)

CONS:
- No Campaign mode and even if there was...(see below)
- Story is negligible
- Steep learning curve
- Capital/Titan Ships and Space stations have no hardpoints (see Star Wars: Empire at War space combat)
- Only three main factions to play (although there are 6 sub-factions)
- Stardock Account Management

CONCLUSION:
GREAT GAME but NOT FOR EVERYONE. If you're the type of gamer who's really into real-time strategy or 4X games and have a lot of free time to burn, then this game would be great. It's massive in scale with dozens of ships clashing in some of the most epic space warfare I have ever seen. Outside of combat, it has a good and complex empire management system akin to the 4X genre. The game also runs surprisingly well with the last generation computer systems since its game engine still only need the system requirements back in 2008 when it was first released.

GOOD BUY and HIGHLY RECOMMENDED for Space, Sci-Fi, RTS and 4X fans.

Excellent RTS Game, The mods for this game are also incredible like Dawn of the Reapers (Mass Effect), Sins of a Galactic Empire (Star Wars) and Sins of the Prophets (Halo). I downloaded the Halo mod before i even got the game itself, haha.

Think Age of Empires. Then think Rome: Total War. Now throw those games into space and fast-foward a couple thousand years, and you'll get Sins of a Solar Empire. This game takes space combat where it has never gone before. The arrray of different ships is vast, the visuals stunning, and the game play rewarding. You can zoom the map all the way out to view 5 solar systems at once, or zoom all the way down to a single fighter as it zips around a mind-bogglingly large and colorful battle.

My only complaint is that sometimes the game can feel too big, if you are playing on the largest map scale, and you find yourself waiting for a good 5 minutes as your fleet traverses one system to the next in search of the enemy. Build scouts!

VERY addictive game that takes ALOT of time per game, The mechanics are very rounded and well thought out and gameplay is immersive. games are quite slow at first due to resource rate and the ammount of time needed to start to grow ingame. However once started it can be very difficult and fast paced.

First review in a while, but this game deserves it.

I'll start out with the somewhat common "my playtime is inaccurate" speech, having played more than 200 hours of this and it's previous incarnations through Impulse.

Sins of a Solar Empire: Rebellion is truly one of a kind. This version basically combines the entirety of the 2 previous titles, Trinity and regular ol' SoaSE, so Rebellion truly has it all and more.

As such, this review is kind of both a Rebellion review and SoaSE in general review, because I've never reviewed the original or Trinity as there is no real story to this game, which makes it a difficult game to even explain to the masses who enjoy story driven games.

I tend to play a Single Player skirmish with 2 or 3 Hard AI players, however in the past have spent a great deal of time playing lengthy LAN matches, which were loads of fun, but ultimately one of the only major flaws of SoaSE comes out through such lengthy matches, even just playing against AI.
That flaw has been given a bad wrap in more recent times because of the evolution and adoption of Multi Core processor technology.

Essentially this game does not utilise multicore CPU's and unfortunately there is no fix for this, even after extensive research and optimisation mod trialling. But to their credit, those mods are great for getting the game to run on lower spec systems, laptops, virtualisation/steaming etc, but no mod can add 64bit or multicore support. That's the game's engine limitation, and it's not the only one around... I'm looking at you Cities XL.

It is important to note that at regular playing speed, this takes tens of hours of a single match to even be a problem, but on lower spec, lower (and older) GHz systems, this happens within about an hour give or take 30mins of regular speed play time with a couple of AI players.

With all that said, one of THE greatest longevity features for me is the ability to speed up the game time by 2x, 4x and 8x increments, even in a LAN match (host must change it).

Because of the vast expanses of space and [travelling] time at regular speed, this speed up feature can actually make for a much more challenging game, albeit much faster. Generally you will have to sacrifice micro management for macro at those speeds, but on large scale maps with only 2 or 3 players, with multiple star systems, the ability to speed up hyperspace travel from a distant planet to another is a HUGE time saving and action creating element and there is no penalty or lock down on the control of the game speed that you have, apart from it's 4 presets, so interchanging between them can be as fluid as zooming in or out and the speed controls can be remapped as well as basically everything else.

When I first discovered this speed up feature in the original Sins, it was, at first, not something I was looking for or really cared about, largely because I was still learning the controls and the game at the time.
When I was finally bored with the amount of time it took to setup, capture, defend, build and deploy, it would be too long for a single game session, and that bothered and still bothers me.

Command & Conquer (up until and including 3) had the right recipe for possible lengths of a single player skirmish battle. With Sins this isn't possible at regular speed, that is if you're interested in actually establishing a large empire of any sort instead of rushing with a dozen weak ships, which gets stale fast.

The camera controls in Sins are very fluid and quite unique, and once you get the hang of it, there really is nothing like it, some things are similar but the ability to orbit and zoom freely around any axis while fixed on a certain point is impressive, and the instant ability to track any of your fleet and zoom right in to the ship and it's details or zoom right out to galaxy level all in real time and fluid as your mouse can move. An RTS camera/movement system that IMO rivals that of what Blizzard, Westwood or EA have ever done is definitely worth a mention in this review.

The 3 original factions, the TEC, Advent and Vasari have been Loyalist-ised and given their Rebel counterparts in this final Sins title and have created many new ways of playing the game. I found that this is by far the most balanced of the 3 in the series mainly because of the 3 extra sub-faction additions, which also open up Role-Playing type elements of having say, 3 Rebel factions vs 3 Loyalist factions in a desperate struggle to take control over a strange galaxy.

The in-game Map Designer is also worth a mention, although it takes a fair bit of trial and error to get something you're happy with, and even then playing your own creations can sometimes backfire or surprise you in ways you never thought possible.
The only downside is the lack of manipulation you have on Planets and Stars. The "Map Designer" is basically a Map Generator.
If you've ever wanted to take on several hundred space pirate homeworlds in the one solar system then Sins is for you!
But in all seriousness, the Map Designer does a pretty good job once you learn how it works and ways you can create interesting maps just by changing sliders and numbers.
If you're really serious about designing your own Solar System or Galaxy then Ironclad have supplied everyone with their GalaxyForge editor which is used to create the many included Single and Multiplayer premade maps.

My Pros & Cons shortlist;

Pros:
+ One of a kind space-based RTS gameplay
+ Useful and informative dialogue boxes, hovering over icons has been given great attention to detail.
+ Massive tech tree
+ Awesome scale of real time space battles and large scale empire building.
+ Fine control over placement of your buildings, or for riskier, faster matches, an "Auto place" feature for Buildings which is also a +
+ Interesting and unique items, ships, power-ups, upgrades
+ The graphics scale really well across many many different types of systems, but the close up details can be a bit disappointing even at Ultra settings.
+ Inclusion of both a Map Designer & GalaxyForge editor.

Cons:
- Fairly steep learning curve and long match times
- Units (mainly Capital Ships) of the same type have to be upgraded individually, on a small scale this is less important then on a larger one.
- No minimap
- Left Planet, Structure and Unit tree can't be hidden. Capturing more than 10-20 planets adds much more time navigating and cuts any efficiency of the tree at all.
- Some tasks would be better left automated, such as the 2 scout ships that you start with should have their exploration ability Autocast set to on, not off. Also Metal and Crystal mines could be auto-built after you have captured a planet and have the resources to spare
- At regular speed it takes far too long to reach higher tech levels in a single match
- Can be boring in stages of early travel or exploration. Once you've seen the same variations of desert, ice, volcanic, terran and asteroids over and over, the excitement wears down over time (tens to hundreds of hours for me)
- Not just a con of Sins, but most RTS games really need the ability to 'mute' a certain Unit or Building you are queuing up and and creating 50 or 100+ of the same Units and the game wants to announce the successful creation of every single one.

One of the best space strategies I've ever played. Three races, six factions fighting for right to rule over solar systems. Great idea, better performance.

For me this game is fun when it's quick, if you do not speed up the game it's very slow and boring, so i recomend 4x normal speed. Singleplayer good, multiplayer better!
If you are fan of strategies, don't forget this one.

Other than the lack of a campaign mode, this game is awesome. On highest mode, the graphics are beautiful and the unlimited angles that you can view everyting from is great. The combat system is simple to learn and in no time you'll be hooked just like I am.

Fantastic Game! Nuf said, I would say its better than Starcraft 1&2 However it does lack a Single player campaign, and mods arn't as easy to install as Skrim, but its still a very diverse and fun game to play

tl;dr: This is good game. Cheap for what you get, lots of mods. Good optimization, much pretty. Music nice, gameplay nice, must play for space RTS fans.

Sins of a Solar Empire is a space RTS with no campaign, but endless replayability. Every game, the universe that the game is played in is randomized, or selected from a premade map (which offer specific challenges to make the game more interesting). There can be many stars in one universe, and each star can have very few or very many planets, asteroids, wormholes, etc.

The game offers a very nice blend of combat, research, and dimplomacy. But research really trumps everything, which leads into one of Sins' flaws... the difficulty curve. This game will kick your ♥♥♥ if you are a newcomer to the RTS genre, and even if you are a veteran, you will find a good challenge. This game is not for the easily frustrated, because going against AI, or other players, can really pump up the blood pressure sometimes.

The game itself runs very well for my system. I'm running it on an AMD FX 6300 Processor, NvidiaGTX 660, with 8 GB of RAM, and it runs perfectly fine. It is very well optimized and looks beautiful. The backgrounds of space look phenomenal and the ships look pretty good too. Watching the space battles can be so nice to look at that you forget to make sure they are actually doing alright.

Anyway, This game is worth the $40, but I would also cash in for the DLC, because they are very good for the price. The modding potential for this game is amazing as well. If you ever get bored of the basic game, you can just browse the giant selection of quality mods on Moddb. If there is a popular movie/TV/game/book series taking place in space, there is a good possibility that there is a well made mod already created, or being crafted of it.

Thanks for reading, if you got this far, and I hope this review helps, although the fact that there are already 1,000's of positive reviews made for this game should be a clear indication of the quality of Sins of a Solar Empire: Rebellion.

One of the best 4X space strategy games I've ever played, proven by my 250+ hrs of gameplay. The game offers excellent balance, interesting factions that, while similar in organization, offer enough degrees of difference to allow for a variety of strategies in gameplay.

The software itself is solid, but one of the features that makes SoaSE so sustanable is the developer and distributor supporting, wholeheartedly, the modding community. Just when you thought you were growing weary of the Vasari's dark fleets, or the TEC's economic supremacy, you can download any of several well-developed mods to suit your favorite sci-fi franchise.

The utter collapse of Kerberos' Sword of the Stars II left a void in the 4x genre that Sins has continued to fill with ease. What the game lacks in the finer points of empire building, it more than makes up for with good macro-economic management tools. But the brilliant tactical and strategic engine is what makes Sins the standard in current space-based strategy games. If you were a fan of the Galactic Civ franchise, Masters of Orion, or Sword of the Stars (the original), this game is a need-to-have part of your collection.

THE most epic scale all out gallactic RTS of this age.

This title has a little something for everybody, it is an economy driven growth sim with real time battles and a very in-depth reserch and developement tree that changes gameplay dramaticaly depending on how you chose to invest. There are so many little things that come together so seamlessly that to describe them all in detail would be like writing a novel, and I would not be suprised if the developers at Stardock had writen a novel about this game; it is certainly worthy of one.

The many different aspects of the game make it a new experience every playthrough with scaling difficulties to pander to the most elite RTS strategy buffs out there. I would recomend this game to anyone who "like me" is tired of the same cookie cutter games and wants a truly Awsome game worthy of so much more praise than I can give. "A mind blowing ride that is re-playable no matter how many times you have ridden" "This game pays for its self the first play through!"
