Development Diary #13: Pagans, advisors, and warrior women

Hello and welcome back to another dev diary about <Secret DLC>! One day we will actually announce this DLC and I’ll be able to use the proper name, but that day is not today! Anyway, right now I am here to tell you about some extra stuff we have made for Pagans, which will be part of the free 2.6 patch (of course, you still need The Old Gods to play as a pagan), and our new Female Advisor events. So, uh, actually this DD is really about 2.6 content and not <Secret DLC>, really, but anyway, onwards!

First of all, Defensive Pagans now have the ability to summon bands of Devout Warriors if they are the primary defender against an enemy of a different religion at the cost of 200 piety. Overall this is rather like the Raise Tribal Army decision and gives Defensive Pagans some extra punch when attacked.

Next, Defensive Pagans also have a new decision which can be used while at peace, and not more often than every 10 years: Ancestor Worship. This allows you to ask your ancestors for help or advise with some part of your life, perhaps you want triumph on the battlefield, maybe you want your realm to Prosper, or perhaps you are just lonely? In any case, once you have decided what it is you want, you must decide what you will offer up to get your request heard, and can range from offering up your eye or a human sacrifice to a more modest feast or carving a simple idol. With the sacrifice made, hopefully you see some kind of result in the not so distant future. Although, skeptics might point out that there’s no evidence the ancestors actually did anything and you may simply be giving them credit for a happy coincidence, that isn’t the kind of thought a pious man ought to have.

here we wish for affection and offer up a feast

With Defensive Pagans covered, let’s move into their more Offensive cousins, the Norse. The first change here is relatively simple, and some of you guessed it from the Trait icons I showed in an earlier DD, but there are now two improved versions of the Viking trait: Ravager and Sea King. These are gained from continuing to sack holdings while raiding after the Viking trait has been gained and come with larger bonuses.

A couple of minor yet neat changes:

  • The Norse may now also gain a trait similar to Crusader when taking part in Great Holy Wars, called Valhalla-bound.
  • Norse Culture will no longer split into into Swedish/Danish etc when it’s part of a powerful Norse realm (which I seem to remember was said to be the case long ago but doesn’t seem to have been implemented) where the ruler either has 2 kingdom tiles or an empire title, or if the faith has been reformed and the Fylkir is Norse. On a related note, Pictish, Old Saxon, and Visigothic cultures will also no longer split/change when part of a powerful realm or their head of religion is of their culture.

Finally, Norse religion rulers now have a decision to appoint female characters in their realm with good Martial skill and appropriate traits as Shieldmaidens. These warrior women can act as bodyguards and/or can be set as commanders for your armies regardless of your gender laws. Shieldmaidens have a number of events relating to both their actions in battle and their training for said battles, and if a player happens to end up as a landed lady they can experience the Shieldmaiden content from the other side.

Now leaving Pagans behind, but staying with cool women, we’ve added a couple of ways to get more female advisors. Firstly, close relatives of a ruler with high stats may ask to be given a job. Secondly, a talented woman may show up in your court and offer her services to you. In either case if you accept they will take up a council position, but you will get an opinion penalty with your vassals - if you have Conclave the size of the penalty is reduced if you have increased your Gender Equality laws. These events do not fire if your gamerules/gender laws/religion/culture allow women to be appointed normally, since in that case you could simply hire them if you want to.

That’s all for this week, next week Doomdark will talk about the future of CK2 beyond <Secret DLC>.

Development Diary June 28th - Maimed!

Hello all, it’s time for another DD about ZombieInvasion <Secret DLC*>! Today we’ll take a look at what we’ve done to the Maimed trait. Well, we’ve removed it! People without <Secret DLC> can still be Maimed, of course, but the lucky owners of <Secret DLC> will instead receive more specific injuries, such as: One-handed, One-legged, One-Eyed, Disfigured, or Mangled (this represents severe trauma to the torso, mostly). As well as allowing more specific wounds and flavor, this has allowed us to remove the Health penalty from most of these traits (Mangled still has one though). Instead, when you receive a maiming-type injury you will also receive the Severely Injured trait, which has some health and stat penalties, but will be lost after some time has passed. Afterall, while losing a hand is certainly not an enjoyable process, you do eventually heal up and can be perfectly healthy besides the missing appendage. Also, if anyone is feeling creative, please suggest interesting effects for these new traits - we do of course have some penalties on them, but I worry they are a little dull, so fire away and I may shamelessly steal your ideas.

Since both One-eyed and Disfigured affect the faces of characters, we have added a lot of new portrait props to reflect this. Here is a small sample of what you might see ingame:

We have also added several events relating to life with missing body parts:

a disfigured ruler holds a masquerade ball

the loss of a hand is a severe blow to a famous warrior

That’s all for now, next week I am not certain which DD we will show, either I will talk about some extra Pagan features we’ve added, or Doomdark will give you some of his thoughts about CK2. It will be a surprize!

*= DLC contains no zombies

“...playing is winning, and there’s something quite satisfying about leading your house to power and glory through whatever means you can, for as long as you can.”
9,5/10 – Strategy Informer

“In short, Crusader Kings II is a majestic feudal sandbox, the greatest generator of hilarious medieval soap opera ever created and Paradox Interactive’s best title to date.”
90/100 – IncGamers

“It's perfectly possible to have made a few too many enemies, anger the Pope and find most of Europe out for your blood. That's really what makes the game so damn fun.”

CK2 is a turn based strategy gem. Beyond basic gameplay review there is no other game that I have found in which you can play it nonstop and put it down for a month and still comeback and enjoy it over and over. I have found no better value in a purchase then this game. I read a lot of negative reviews from people about DLC's and I think it is nonsense. Stand alone the game is fine, most DLC packages are purely different cultures within the game itself. Play throughs are typically so long it isn't to say you'd ever even get around to full play throughs many other cultures anyways. With all that being said the game is fantastic.

(I'm french, so sorry for my mistakes)
This game is one of my favorite game ever so far. I got it a year ago and I'm never bored of this game. With each DLC that came out, the game became sometime harder, sometime easier, but I am not complaining about it. Each extensions gave something new to this already awesome game. However, some of those DLC shouldn't exist because they are quite basic, like the Old Gods or Sword of Islam.

This game is always a suprise because there will always be something strange that happens, like a jihad for Denmark, or a crusade on France. If you like ahistorical game, this one is for you. Oh, and did I mention that you can lay in multiplayer? The multiplayer part of the game is awesome, even if the servers are unstable. You can so so much stuff stupid with your friends! For example, nearly half of my play time on this gamer is on multiplayer with only one friend!

And for those who seek a challenge, try to do the achievements of the game, some are quite hard and will ask you a lot of time of practice! (Kingdom of David for example)

As a conclusion, I do recommend this awesome game and if you ever buy it and like it, try the multiplayer with 5 or 6 friends, you'll never the world the same way, especially if you have the conclave DLC.

PS. Again, I'm sorry for my mistakes.

I game I come back to constantly and play for hundreds of hours each time. I really enjoy the game and all the extra content they keep producing. You have to buy a few DLC to really get the full feeling of this game, unfortunately, but they have sales regularly. And although all the DLC can be off-putting the game truly is worth it.

This is the kind of game that epitomizes the PC master race.

You will never find this game on a console, not only because it would be a nightmare to control it without a mouse, but because even the mightiest of Google supercomputers will collapse under the sheer overload of keeping track of your confusing family tree.

Let's set things straight: this is one of the best Paradox game and probably my favourite one since it covers a period of time I like a lot and since it's less complex and tactical than other Paradox. It has got, instead, a great RPG component. An amazing mix which makes the game very addicting.

Why the negative review? Because this game alone is almost nothing. It lets you play just a very small amount of countries. If you want the full game you must buy the DLCs... nothing new you could think. Well, the problem is there is a HUGE amount of DLCs and after years from the publishing of the main game they're still developing new one. They're getting always more useless, DLC after DLC, while the price gets higher (some of the last costs half the main game...LOL).
As a loyal and old Paradox fan i get frustrated not only because they're obviously trying to get any cents out of my wallet, but mainly because after 4 (FOUR!) years I still can't enjoy the full game: whenever you start a new campaign (and a CK game can be pretty long and time consuming) they announce a new DLC with new features and new rules and you feel like you're playing an useless match and feel like abandoning it and wait for the new DLC. Problem is: when you get it, they have already announced a new one.
Also, every DLC comes with patches which totally change the rules of the game and you have to learn them again and again and again. It's like playing an early access game, but I've always hated those and I would have avoided it if I had known.

Basically they're policy with games lately has become: "let's publish an incomplete game and let's charge a lot with DLCs if they want to play its full version" and they're not the only company to do it, but when they finished the game they started to make useless DLCs (there's one of fantasy history in which aztecs invade Europe... which is not a great thing in a game of such historic realism) and to change the rules to worse just to justify new DLCs. They're literally to the point in which a great game is turning into a bad one.

Saddest thing for a loyal customer like me was the DLC to convert CK2 games into EU4 games to continue a campaign there. So I, a huge fan who bought all of your games, get rewarded for this by being forced to pay 10 euro just for a crappy converter if I want to "fuse" together the Paradox games I possess? Nice policy Paradox...

To give you an idea, today you need 165€ just to play the full game (without even considering the massive amount of graphic and soundtrack DLCs or the EU4 converter) and DLCs are still coming out. The game can be good but its not worth half of that price.

You better wait till they start working on CK3 and stop squeezing money out of this game. Then maybe they'll lower the price of a 4 years old game (prices are still the same even for the main game) and you can buy a cheap package with all the DLCs.
It's not worth a penny before that. You can trust someone who loved this and other Paradox games.

The new changes are horrible and I hate this game with a passion now.

I have over 1,000 hours of this game, and I would play it every day after coming home from school, raid kingdoms and villages as the Vikings and other pagans... Now that was fun.

This new interface and "the Conclave" decision is just... awful. Ruined it all for me. What ruined it more was the "shadowed retreat" update, where your troops run away, like they do in Europa Universalis IV. Pure annoyance and bullscheisse.

BULL. SCHEISSE.

At the time of writing, this $40 game has $240 of DLC available.

Crusader Kings II is a great game - and I'm not using that word lightly, it's a GREAT game - but I can't recommend it. I've put a lot of hours into this game (more than Steam has counted), but it's never been a fulfilling experience because of all the goddamed DLC.

Listen, I'm no enemy to DLC, if a developer makes more content for their game, I'll pay to play it. But the way Paradox does it is straight up insidious.

"This new update adds North Africa to the game......but you can't play there unless you buy the Sword of Islam DLC"

"The newest update adds all of India to the vanilla map.......but you can't play there unless you buy the Rajas of India DLC"

"We just added the entire Asian continent to the game.......but you can't play there unless you buy the Horse Lords DLC"

DLC in this game isn't comparable to DLC in other games, it's not like it adds a weapon skin or an extra level. Crusader Kings II DLC fundamentally changes the core gameplay of the game, and some things that have DRASTIC changes on how you play (such as the ability to have a standing army, form custom kingdoms, or even the existence of the Jewish religion) are hidden behind 4 years and $240 of DLC.

To put it simply, I have never felt like I was playing a finished game. Every time I turn it on, there's an ad for yet another piece of DLC. Once I finally save up enough to buy the next biggest DLC pack, another is announced. It's just not fulfilling.

Until Paradox decides to wrap this game up like they've done with Europa Universalis IV and Hearts of Iron III, and put their energy to developing Crusader Kings III instead of squeezing more DLC money out of current players, I can't recommend it.

To start off this game has been an amazing journey, I bought this because it was in my queue long ago. I am just a person who is interested in one strategy games and two historical games. This one fit the bill perfectly and when I purchased it I was extremely impressed. Before playing this I had never heard of Paradox nor played any of their games, after this game however, I love to play all of their games. This game is exciting and allows you to rule as your own medieval ruler after that you can do just about anything you want. The community for mods is also great and makes excellent improvements to the game the devs also have made excellent expansion packs. Many reviews will talk about the devs failures and how DLC is over priced. I do not agree with that in any way, I have slowly purchased most of the dlc and have loved every bit of it. The DLC add great content to the game and bring in new and interesting features. Yes the game is a lot of money if you purchase the game and then all the DLC however, how I like to see it as this you are getting multiple games out of one game. You want to play as a Viking you can do that, you want to play as a Muslim Caliph you can do that, you want to be a Catholic King you can do that, you want to be a Byzantine count you can do that. My point out of that is you can be anything in this game you get the chance to make your own story over and over and over again. Sure the game is not perfect however, no game is the game is special however, and this game will allow you to have a great time on it. The learning curve is steep and at some points extremely hard, thats okay though thats the fun of the game the harder you have to work the more spectacular the experience will be. I hope you enjoyed this review and I would recommend you begin playing this game.

Two years ago, I got CKII on special offer just for the hell of it, and I played it for about 4 hours

I hated it. it was just so ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ complicated, boring, I couldn't work out the systems, it was BORING. I only played it when I got bored, until one day, in september 2014, I was playing it out of boredom and I married someone. Her father died shortly after, and she inherited his duchy in norway. Then, my character died and his 15 year old son became head of one of the most powerfu, duchies in Norway. fast forward 100 years and We're kings of norway and england. fast forward 50 years anf we're counts of some rocks in Cornwall. then, we became kings in less than 25 years. And that's the magic of CKII. anything can happen. It's impossible to describe, do I'll split it into pros and cons.

Cons: a learning curve of 90 degrees and an absolutely disgusting tutorial system that teaches nothing

Pros: when you learn the game, It becomes a vibrant, sprawling mass of politics, marriage, religion and warfare, trying to get on top and stay there while everyone else tries to kill you, and desperately surviving. The game tells a story of events, families, murders and warfare. Oh, and incest... It's gritty and down to earth, showing the reality of medieval history in the ways history class never could, whilst giving a delightful account of the bedroom antics of rednecks and showing that one kid, one wife who likes guys a bit too much, one bad trait, one guy with that ♥♥♥♥ing trusting trait can completely screw up a plan that has been in progress for 100 years, only for you to turn events around and become king of Spain, when you actually meant to be king of Scotland.

In short, this game can be tlked about endlessly, but only understood and loved when it's bought, when you climb that pile of corpses that mainly consist of your brothers because ypu havent got Primogeniture succession/ Climbing the learning curve and play it. It's been my favourite game for the last two years and has won that title easily due to it's ability to be remarkably simple, yet so ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ complex, you're always learning.
