Man vs Machine

What’s this, a dev diary on a Monday?! Yes, it’s true, we’ve moved them to Mondays so they’ll coincide with CK2 streams. The Reaper’s Due has been out for a while now, and I am very pleased with how both it and the free update were received (I wasn’t sure the focus on Death would be so universally appreciated!) As Game Director, I rarely have time to do much coding and scripting anymore, but I did help out with the optimizations and several of the Game Rules. The game is in safe hands though; the current CK2-team has done an amazing job so far!

Work has now commenced on the next expansion and I can already reveal it’s going to be something a bit similar to Way of Life, which I believe I actually mentioned in my previous dev diary. I also promised optimizations, AI improvements and quality of life stuff. Well, the optimizations are done for now, so the next major free update will feature AI and GUI improvements, which brings me to today’s topic; usability.

Now, we are aiming to tweak several interfaces and while I cannot go into much detail yet, I can say that I’d especially like to address the following main areas:

  • Plotting (quality of life)
  • Prisoner management
  • Guardian vs Educator (clarity)
  • More space for Traits and Character Modifiers
There are other things in the works too, but when you’ve worked on a game for so many years you tend to get blind to many usability issues and simply accept them as they are. That is why I’d like to hear from you, our faithful fans, what you find most annoying and clunky about the CK2 interfaces. Are there any actions you find hard to do, or useful information you cannot easily find (or not at all)? All feedback is welcome!

That is all for now; please post your suggestions on our official forum...

CK2 Dev Diary#24: The 2.6.2 patch

Hello and welcome back to another CK2 Development Diary. The 2.6.2 update looms rather near now, and if everything goes to plan it should be released on Thursday. I’ll start out with the bad news; due to some unforeseen problems one of the game rules I mentioned last week will not be included with this patch: The Multiplayer Assassination rule. However, we do have two other game rules for you which you may find interesting:

  1. De jure Requirement: Default/Required. On default, nothing changes, but with “Required” characters who hold titles which have de jure land will eventually lose the title if they don’t hold any of the de jure land.
  2. Horse Lords:Nomad Stability: Unstable/Stable. Now when a Khagan dies, his vassals have the possibility to break away and form their own realms -with the new Khagan getting a CB on them. Setting “Stable” keeps the old behaviour.

There was some outcry last week because Jews and Zoroastrians didn’t also get a crusader style trait, so I’ve managed to sneak both in with the Shaddai and Gond-i Shahanshah traits. While we were in a trait-adding mood, both Cannibal and Lover’s Pox were changed from character modifiers to traits (although we have left the old modifier checks in place so ongoing games aren’t broken).

The Gender Equality gamerule and laws revealed a few problems with Muslim events always assuming Muslim rulers would be male, so we’re spend a bit of time adding the appropriate checks which should result in a more flavourful Muslim experience.

As well as this, there are plenty of small fixes and additions to many other things, but I’ll let you explore the game and/or the patchnotes to discover them for yourselves.

Full patch notes in original thread
(These are works in progress, when the patch is released we’ll post a final version)

And, last of all, from next week onwards we’ll be posting CK2 DDs on Mondays instead of Tuesdays.

“...playing is winning, and there’s something quite satisfying about leading your house to power and glory through whatever means you can, for as long as you can.”
9,5/10 – Strategy Informer

“In short, Crusader Kings II is a majestic feudal sandbox, the greatest generator of hilarious medieval soap opera ever created and Paradox Interactive’s best title to date.”
90/100 – IncGamers

“It's perfectly possible to have made a few too many enemies, anger the Pope and find most of Europe out for your blood. That's really what makes the game so damn fun.”
9/10 – Destructoid

Относно тази игра

The Dark Ages might be drawing to a close, but Europe is still in turmoil. Petty lords vie against beleaguered kings who struggle to assert control over their fragmented realms. The Pope calls for a Crusade to protect the Christians in the Holy Land even as he refuses to relinquish control over the investiture of bishops - and their riches. Now is the time for greatness. Expand your demesne and secure the future of your dynasty. Fill your coffers, appoint vassals, root out traitors and heretics, introduce laws and interact with hundreds of nobles, each with their own agenda.
A good lord will always need friends to support him. But beware, as loyal vassals can quickly turn to bitter rivals, and some might not be as reliable as they seem... Stand ready, and increase your prestige until the world whispers your name in awe. Do you have what it takes to become a Crusader King?

Crusader Kings II is definitely one of the best strategy games out there.

I am not sure how, but Paradox Interactive started to indoctrinate me already 6 to 7 years ago when I happened to become the owner of Hearts of Iron II.
Since then, I've followed this great publisher/producer of Grand Strategy games through good and bad times and never felt bad about it.
CK II got a very special place in my memory, since it is the most intuitive and "Easy to get into"-game of all Paradox Grand Strategy Games.
Hits like Hearts of Iron II+III, Europa Universalis III+IV and Victoria I+II and the fanmade Darkest Hour: A Hearts of iron Game were fabulous, no doubt, but you needed the willpower to fight yourself through several really bad hours in which you acted like the biggest noob that ever existed.
Once you figured it all out, you loved and played it more than anything else.

Those were the non-casual games in which you NEEDED to understand a system of correlations to the very detail to go out as the great winner.
CK II is also like that, but with one difference:
Paradox Interactive managed to casualize the game by using an intuitive interface and a system that balances out deepest human logic and numbers.
Does "casualizing" mean "Dumbing it down"?
No, it sure doesn't.
CK II has a great potential to make "normal players" and "hardcore strategists" happy.

But it sure got better:
Since the conversion of games into EU IV is possible, you can help your empire to get through the rough times of colonization and religious warfare.
Also, the multiplayer aspect earns my greatest respect, because Paradox Interactive finally managed to bring up a relatively (mind this word) stable online gaming experience, which makes everything more fun.
You FINALLY got bored with the main game or just want another experience?
Go to the forums and look at the astonishing amount of mods. Game of Thrones, The Elder Scrolls, real life scenarios ... They're all out there thanks to Paradox' mod-friendly way of thinking.

So, that's it.
I would recommend that game to everybody looking for a new game experience, whether he touched earlier titles of Paradox or not.
Oh, yeah. Last but not least: Don't think that Paradox tries to eff you over by publishing thousands and thousands of DLCs.
Most of them are only for visual aesthetics and/or songs and you won't need them, but have the choice to step up your experience. Some of them are really relevant DLCs (Sons of Abraham, The Old Gods, The Republic, Legacy of Rome, Sword of Islam), but they are definitely worth the money, since they ofer you a whole new way of playing.

So, yeah. That's it.
Wonderful game made by a publishing studio that does NOT do everything the right way, however they sure try to.
Have a nice day.

P.S.: Even Northernlion got into it, man. You can do it, too.

I love the game but i am really dissapointed that the developers didnt put my country bulgaria during its golden age in tsar simeons reign he is the son of tsar boris the first of bulgaria. Also boris was not the one who lost lands to the magyars the territory only expanded until simeons death during simeons reign the magyars settled in pannonia. Simeon the first of bulgaria reigned from 893-927
