Why Early Access?

“as we figure out and develop our way to the end goal of a full featured coop game engine designed for 3d interaction from the ground up, we want to include as many voices and thoughts in the process. if our goal is to make a set of standards for 3d creative environments then we need a reference implementation, and we need widespread feedback on every decision to make sure it grows into the idealized future of vr social platforms.

we have a lot of goals and with this being my (zodiepupper's) dream project that i've had since childhood, there is nothing i want more than for this to exist at all. i'm already committed to working on this project for probably the rest of my life.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“we are targeting a full 1.0 release by December 31 2027. i have a lot of big plans for this project and i am working as fast as i can, but it's not my full-time job so it'll take a while. feel free to contribute or support us. ”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“the early access label is a signifier that the game is still not what i consider to be an MVP. we are very close though.

the MVP for barkvr is for users to be able to edit the scene together, while in avatars (with full body tracking), chatting, and watching videos.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“the game currently works well offline with experimental networking features. you can open the game, login to your matrix account, import various types of assets, write code directly into the game world in realtime, join other users, chat with users via text or voip, send users your creations, and export assets from the game to be used in your own games/creations.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“no. barkvr is and always will be completely free and open source.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“we take all feedback very seriously. whether that's yelling at me (zodiepupper), creating github issues, leaving a review, etc.

we've developed a set of tools and systems on top of the Godot game engine that lets you edit the very game your sitting in. not only can you edit every aspect of the game world (scripts, shaders, meshes, etc) you are in, you can do it with friends.
