Amnesia: The Dark Descent, een first person survival horror.

Possibly the scariest game of all time. Played this game a lot (non-steam), so don't judge my playtime.

The atmosphere, sounds,...make this game a trully horrifying experience. If you like horror, definitely buy this one.

Personal Rating: "Worth playing"
Traditional Rating: 7/10
Genre: Horror

Amnesia’s veritable house of horrors – Castle Brennenburg - is still a superbly realised piece of gothic digital real-estate that comes straight out of hell even if you may have already seen its catalogue of horror clichés and settings in other games and films. Decaying and crumbling from within - your initial encounter with this hide-away-for-hell is akin to almost every lonely cabin or castle in the woods that pepper many a horror story. Ramshackle rooms will lead you from one area to the next, bookshelves will be covered with dust, dinner tables will almost always be covered in grime and decay as the food left on them begins to rot, windows will be cracked or outright smashed and an eerie wind will almost always be blowing through: finding its resting place in long, deep and dark cavernous hallways. One glance at the place should immediately tell you something very bad once happened here and another glance that it ain’t over yet!

Amnesia takes place in the early nineteenth century where you take on the role of a man named Daniel, a young man from London, who wakes up in Castle Brennenburg with little or no memory of his past except for his name. All the player is armed with at the onset of the game is a simple note – descend into the inner sanctum of the castle and find and kill a Baron that goes by the name of Alexander. Players soon realise that all is not well within the confines of Daniels mind. Events from the past – slowly revealed through letters and notes strewn across the castle – begin to paint a disturbing picture of how the evil in all of us can be accessed and then exploited by others for their own selfish gain.

Employing a rather genius mechanic of not actually being able to fight back at the various terrors encountered within the walls of the castle, Daniel needs to literally rely on running ahead and hiding in the shadows to avoid being caught or seen. This act, however, is a bit of a double edged sword. Not only is Daniel’s mind fast unravelling but his sanity too. The only way to keep Daniel from flipping out completely (which results in the entire screen dissolving in a dizzy flow of wavy lines with cockroaches running up and down its borders) is to keep Daniel within the confines of a light source. Fleeing from the terrors held within the castle and into a darkness so oppressive you can almost feel the weight of it falling out of your monitor is one of the most terrifying experiences I have ever encountered in any medium that uses horror to tell its story. Looking for a suitable hiding place as your eyes scramble to make out objects all while dealing with the onset of going totally insane by having your vision blur is the stuff nightmares are made of.

At its heart Amnesia: The Dark Descent is an adventure game. Puzzles are strewn about the place, requiring solving before any advancement can be made. The puzzles themselves are not too hard to figure out but some of them do border on the obtuse and you get the feeling the developers are doing nothing more than padding out their title.

Graphically the game looked outdated even upon its initial release but we have to remember that the game has been created without the AAA Budget of some big publisher and for an Indie it works. What the game lacks in graphical beauty it makes up in audio which really enhances this stark and grim world.

There are many times throughout the game where it becomes literally a heart-stopping affair. I won’t lie – the game can be relentless in its efforts to scare the bejesus out of you. While games like Dead Space and Resident Evil are quite happy to rely on trigger-happy scares to thrill their audiences, Amnesia: The Dark Descent is more happy to tie you up and then hang you upside down all whilst it slowly, very slowly hacks at your groin with a hack-saw with the intent to slice your buttocks open - doing all this while laughing manically. In other words – if you love horror, you should love this!

"My name is..............my name is...........Daniel" and thats the start to this dark and totally engrossing horror game that grabs you by the scruff of the neck and refuses to let go of you until you have finished it and seen all the horrors that it has to offer.
This is one game i had on my radar for a long time and one i had heard a lot about, either written or from friends who have played it and the words "CLASSIC" and "GENRE DEFINING" have been mentioned on more than one occasion.
But i allways take this with a pinch of salt and allways make up my own mind, but trust me when i say that the two phrases that i just mentioned dont do this game justice as it is both of these and so much more.
You start to play not knowing much other than your name and that for some reason you are here to do something that will affect not only your life but that of others as well, and as the game progress'es you will come to learn not only the nature for your being here but that of the screams that haunt the castle you find yourself stuck in.
And thats all i will say on the story of the game as you should find the secrets this game holds and the many twists it takes on your own as nothing is more horrifying or scary as not only hearing but witnessing these things for yourself first hand instead of after the fact.
The graphics may look a little dated but trust me when i say they do their job perfectly when it comes to the scare factor and the things you will see not only make you jump (some jump scares in game) but also repulse you as well.
The sound is top notch and really helps in setting that "OH MY GOD" type atmosphere that a lot of games like this seem to lack, all the spoken dialogue in game is delivered to perfection by the voice cast and some of it just has to be heard to be believed as to how good it actually is.
The gameplay ranges from puzzle solving (finding items that are laying around in the castle) which can be quite frustrating as some puzzles can be quite offbeat to running and hiding from the monstrosities that pervade in this dark and forboding castle from hades (a lot has been said lately about games using this mechanic but here it suits the game and makes it more nerve wracking to play).
Now i have said this on occasions before but i like it when developers take a leaf out of other mediums and this game was no acception, you can clearly see that a certain "MR LOVECRAFT" has had some bearing on this game as it is yet another story that would not look out of place on his resume and one that was at once a joy to play and also horrific to be a part of at the same time.
So would you like this game and the answer is yes if you are looking for a classic and one of the best games the horror genre of games has ever had to offer but if you are not one for this type of game and want something a little more action packed instead of full of story and an interesting and horrific tale then i would look elswhere.
And remember "THE DARK ONES ARE ALLWAYS WATCHING,ALLWAYS"

Are you looking for a game that is different than all those other horror games out there? Well, you don’t need to look further; Amnesia: The Dark Descent is that game. This game is truly horrifying, unlike most horror games out there, Amnesia isn’t a horror game that is full of cheap jump scares. Amnesia: the Dark Descent is that game you shouldn’t be focused on playing the game to win; you should be focused on being submerged into this big, dark, and petrifying world. Amnesia’s scares are ones that last, making your hands shake and evermore aware of your surroundings. These long lasting scares, however, are evenly put out with the unique puzzles in the game. Nothing ever feels better when you solve an elaborate puzzle, and move onward to the next. You cannot fight your enemies; you should either run like hell, or hide. From solving puzzles, dodging monsters, and keeping an eye on your sanity. Every chamber just takes you ever deeper into the abyss of what’s called Amnesia: The Dark Descent.

Is the Main Story too scary? Or are you bored of it? Don't think that you're done yet, because the horror doesn’t end there. You can go online and download custom stories, made by users to scare other users and to make the Amnesia experience a better one.

10/10
Definitely worth the purchase for you horror game players

Games don't scare me. Movies don't scare me. In fact, short of being dropped in the middle of the ocean or singing in public, there's not much I'm bothered by... except Amnesia. Why? Because in this game, I am powerless. I cannot fight back. Games like Doom, Resident Evil, Dead Space, etc.; They fail to send chills up my spine and make me squeal like a child because they made the mistake of giving me an arsenal of weapons and badass personality traits. Are Isaac Clarke and Claire Redfield afraid? Sure, and I don't blame them. But I'm not, because I look awesome and I can materialize various tools of immenent destruction. Those creepers waiting to pop-out from behind the corner aren't trying to scare me, they're sacrificing themselves to the God of Death! Amnesia, though... My tools are the world's worst lantern and a number of closets to hide in! I couldn't fight if my life depended on it, and it most certainly does. Well done, Amnesia; I haven't looked over my shoulder this much since I was 12.
