Portal is a classic. Who doesn't know what Portal is. Still gonna review Portal. Going in to Portal as someone who had played a good amount of Portal 2, I knew what to expect. Portal was very fun to play through, and had a few complicated puzzles. I enjoyed the game but was a little suprised when I beat the game in just over 2 hours. Then I went back in and tried a few advanced maps, and realized, I have a reason to keep playing. Portal also had a pretty good sound track with some classics comming from GLaDOS. Portal is a very well made Puzzle Platformer that is worth playing not only for the fun gameplay but also to help you understand the plot going into Portal 2.

Portal took me just over 2 hours to beat, and has a decent amount of replay value with advanced maps forcing me to go back for that 100%. But for those who want to get a lot of time out of their games I would advise you to wait until Portal is on sale as the game can be very short to those who are not interested in the advanced maps, and challenges.

Portal is an amazing experience. In terms of video games: it is the very definition of short & sweet. There are many people out there overly concerned with the length of games, and I believe Portal is an excellent example of why one shouldn’t immediately scoff at a short game due to prejudices. Sometimes 3 hours of perfection is better than 20 hours of mediocrity. Sit down, immerse yourself, and just play through the game in one sitting as you would if watching a movie. It is worth it.

I say this because I believe this is a game best enjoyed in one sitting. There are no lulls or down points, and every second of the game is riveting and purposeful. The whole experience is so genuinely entertaining and the pacing is so perfectly on point that I think it is designed to be played like this. In this way, I see the length of the game as a strength and not a weakness… but maybe I’m just crazy.

But what is it that makes the game so genuinely entertaining in the first place? Everything… and then some. The concept is innovative, the puzzles are intuitive and interesting, the atmosphere is captivating, and the dialogue is hilarious and flawless. And when all of these facets come together in the finished product, the whole becomes greater than the sum of its parts. And a game is created that transcends opinions: it is undeniably great.

Honestly, I respect everyone’s right to their own taste in video games; but if you don’t enjoy Portal, I would dutifully suggest you consider finding a new hobby. I would find it very hard to understand how anyone could possibly not enjoy this game if they consider themselves a “gamer.”

If you haven’t yet had the luxury of experiencing Portal, then I envy you. Stop thinking about it and just go for it.

There is no other game for me personally, that I would consider perfect, other than Portal.

There is literally NOTHING flawed in the game, nothing at all I can think of.
The pacing is impeccable, with the correct timing on music and ambient playback with the story.
It covers all types of pacing with music and ambience in gameplay, from the slow and depressing downward spiral of thinking you may never escape (Self Esteem Fund from the OST), to the fast paced finale music of the game. The game made me go through so many emotions all in the expanse of my first time playing around 3 hours.

The game is UNBELIEVABLY clever, yet doesn't need to break the fourth wall to do that, which is incredibly impressive.
The game's humour is absolutely timeless, it is old as hell (9 years from this review point), and yet the jokes are still brilliant. witty, and dark. There are almost NO games that do it on the same caliber of Portal, hell, not even Portal 2 could live up to this godly creation.
The puzzles are beautifully made, completely fair (no fidgety rubbish) and once again, timeless in the sense of enjoyment.

Visually, you might think this game is nothing to write home about, but to me, once again the game shows how age will NEVER affect this game. NEVER. simplistic visuals will always be timeless, intricate wank in videogames will ensure it stays contemporary.

I think I play through Portal 1 at least once a year. The game is short, and scales next to nothing in comparison to other games, but unlike those said games, which take hours upon hours of your life, portal will only take an hour or two. But it stays with you for life, and allows you to experience true perfection in a videogame.
I generally hate analogies for this kind of stuff, but if you can think of some other medium with a perfect technicality and timelessness to it (think of Citizen Kane or something), then Portal is that kind of game.
I think most people in the year 2016 will have played this by now, but sometimes you just gotta pour your heart out for something you cherish a bunch.

Valve may not be the greatest company, but some small dev team in there brought us absolute perfection, and I thank them for this experience with complete content.

I just have to say this...

This was a triumph!
I'm making a note here:
Huge success!

It's hard to overstate
my satisfaction.

Aperture Science:
We do what we must
because we can
For the good of all of us.
Except the ones who are dead.

But there's no sense crying
over every mistake.
You just keep on trying
'til you run out of cake.
And the science gets done.
And you make a neat gun
for the people who are
still alive.

I'm not even angry...
I'm being so sincere right now.
Even though you broke my heart,
and killed me.

And tore me to pieces.
And threw every piece into a fire.
As they burned it hurt because
I was so happy for you!

Now, these points of data
make a beautiful line.
And we're out of beta.
We're releasing on time!
So I'm GLaD I got burned!
Think of all the things we learned!
for the people who are
still alive.

Go ahead and leave me...
I think I'd prefer to stay inside...
Maybe you'll find someone else
to help you.
Maybe Black Mesa?
That was a joke. Ha Ha. Fat Chance!

Anyway this cake is great!
It's so delicious and moist!

Look at me: still talking
when there's science to do!
When I look out there,
it makes me glad I'm not you.

I've experiments to run.
There is research to be done.
On the people who are
still alive.
And believe me I am
still alive.
I'm doing science and I'm
still alive.
I feel fantastic and I'm
still alive.
While you're dying I'll be
still alive.
And when you're dead I will be
still alive

Still alive.

Still alive.

Please Valve!! I'm still waiting for the movie!! Or portal 3... Who knows :3 ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

Portal * 9/10

I need a companion Cube.

Portal looks like a First-Person Puzzle Game with the good old Half-Life 2 Source Engine, but it's more than that. We're Chell, a girl used as guinea pig forced to do tests for an artificial intelligence called GLaDos with a portal gun inside this gigantic and apparently deserted structure named Aperture Science Labs. The puzzles you will be prompted to solve involve the use of the portal gun, a gun that shoots two linking portals on specific typologies of walls and, you must complete every test where you might have to push a button, drop cubes, make huge leaps with the help of the portals and a clever use of physics and gravity.

Seems simple and effective but what's so special in this game? Well, besides the clever puzzles you can't ignore the ourageously and funny GLaDos, with her sarcastic comments and black humour that will keep on encouraging you in doing tests for her while at the same time insulting you. Exhilarating.

The interesting fact is the minimalistic story behind the game. Portal is set in the same "universe" of Half-Life 2, but the time is not specified. Anyways it's interesting to notice the small clues around the maps, the small hints and stories told by GLaDos to understand a little what's going on, why are we here and what happened to the Aperture Science Labs.

Unfortunately a very big problem of the game is it's length, it just take less than a fistful hours to fully complete it, but believe me it's really worth it.

  • PORTAL. Very innovative and creative puzzles. I love the portal gun and it's being used in every possible way pushing the player to make a very attentive use with the aid of physics.
  • GLaDos. Her artificial sarcasm alone is definitely a reason good enough to play.
  • LENGHT. It's Short. Very short... Too Short

This review article analyzes the tone and design of the excellent single-player campaigns in Portal and Portal 2, concluding that the original Portal is the stronger title.

[. . .] I think it’s fairly trivial to say that Portal is a significant and influential franchise. In fact, I would go so far as to say that the original Portal is such a cohesive, nearly flawless gaming experience that it should be remembered alongside the other highest-tier encapsulations of solid game design and execution. Portal is an innovative 1st person puzzler that was crafted with the utmost attention to detail. It blends thoughtful puzzle design with a comedic and interesting narrative in a surprisingly effective way that shaped it into an instant classic back when it was released in 2007. To go more in depth on Portal, Let’s take a look at its graphics, gameplay, and story, followed by some final thoughts.

Portal is a game enveloped by a stark and sterile tone, which fits it perfectly. This does come with the added note that it's not much of a looker due to an absence of elaborate visual effects, but that's not the point of Portal so this doesn't give it any strikes in my book. The graphics are in reality more of a tool to push the atmosphere, which is the overbearing feeling that you are a lab rat with no control over your predicament. When looking at the visuals in this light, you realize that Portal specifically chose this lack of graphical complexity in order to improve the more important aspects of its design, the gameplay and narrative. Because of this, it's my opinion that Portal is visually flawless.

Just like virtually every other Valve game, the focus of Portal is its gameplay. This is shown by the majority of Portal's emphases being on the expertly crafted puzzling along with the occasional platforming section. The puzzles are done through the quite original use of a portal gun you receive early in the game, which can shoot portals of two colors onto certain (white) surfaces, allowing you and objects to pass through to wherever you have placed the opposite portal. You'll have to use these portals in a multitude of ways, whether it be to obtain a needed object, defeat obstacles, power a device in order to progress to the next level, etc. This fresh idea combined with the excellent physics results in some pretty great moments; an example being launching yourself through a portal at a fast pace, and then having to carry that momentum into a new portal you've made midflight in order to propel yourself at an objective. As for the platforming, it's pretty much just the standard timed jumping every now and then, onto a platform. All considered the gameplay isn't very varied, but the puzzling mechanic Portal relies on is both wonderfully ingenious and fun to play around with.

In Portal you begin by waking up in a cold and barren room, knowing nothing about your character or why you are where you are. A portal opens soon after being spoken to by a computerized womanly voice, and you are then released into the Aperture Science Facility to do… well, science. You do this science by the way of solving increasingly complex puzzles while being observed by this AI's robotic voice, and who knows what else, if anything else. The whole way you are taunted by the artificial intelligence (whose name is GLaDOS) in a comedic fashion, but it often hits close to home because her insults are based on your actions, which she previously forced you to commit in order to proceed. This serves to build Portal’s personality, something very few games have, and it’s a real treat that this one does. As to not spoil too much, let's shift gears. There are many environmental clues and eventually a confirmation through GLaDOS' dialogue which informs you that Portal takes place in the same world as Half-Life, which opens up one of the biggest cans of worms in gaming history. How closely the two franchises are connected no one knows (because Gaben can't count to 3), but it's obviously of some importance to the overarching narrative if it was stated in game. Other than that the story culminates in a celebratory party where you get to eat some cake, which is a great way to end the game and move on to Portal 2. In conclusion, Portal's narrative is one of science, then comedic relief, which is followed by mystery, and ends in cake; a story I'd say any gamer could enjoy.

Final Thoughts
When it comes to puzzle games, Portal is the first that comes to mind for pretty much any PC player you ask. I feel this speaks a lot to the greatness of the game, especially when you consider its very short runtime of 2-3 hours; it must have done something great to receive the type of overwhelmingly positive reaction it got, and that's for you to experience. For me I think I was let down by the hype, and maybe also because puzzlers aren't really my choice of game. All in all though, I appreciate Portal for what it is, and think every PC gamer should give it a chance. It's perfectly crafted, there's no denying that. What you get out of Portal will be entirely governed by your taste in games, which for me meant a solid puzzling and narrative experience through the mysterious Aperture Science Facility.

Personal Rating: 8.5/10

P.S. The Cake is a Lie.
