Version 1.0.0.3

by Zak

Hi Everybody!

Since the game was officially released two days ago, we've decided to publish change logs here. Obviously the dev blog notes are going to be more rare from now on, however the updates will certanly be posted regularly.

So, version 1.0.0.3 change list is as follows:
  • Incorrect friendly fire penalty for shooting static objects, neutral and enemy houses fixed;
  • Server performance improved twice in the moments when ground vehicles explode during massive AI battles;
  • Dserver crashes that happen 1-2 times a day fixed;
  • In Campaign missions “Escort for assault planes”, “Ground attack”; “Ground forces support” there’s now a chance for the 2nd and the 3rd waves of enemy fighter escort to appear;
  • Spawn points for enemy fighters are now random in “Escort for assault planes” missions in Campaign;
  • Target area is now shown correctly on the enemy territory in the Uranus operation in Campaign;
  • Briefing data about airfield altitude and target approach altitude was rounded up in Campaign;
  • Atmosphere pressure and temperature were set in accordance to te dates in Campaign;
  • Autoplay for the final video cut scene fixed in Campaign;
  • Getting XP and a new level on the same debriefing window fixed in Campaign;
  • AI covering tactics changed: they don’t fly far away now from the objects they are covering
  • XP counting for destroying villages or towns was disabled. You still can get XP for destroying warehouses, plants, bridges, railway stations;
  • Plane setup is now correctly transferred from mission settings when login to a server or loading a mission; personal customizations are recorded for one mission;
  • Default plane setup no longer stops player from starting a mission (but we recommend you to check the settings if you’re playing on a custom server);
  • Incorrect image proportions fixed on loading screens;
  • User settings reset function will no longer reset all options but custom interface only;
  • Stats for destroyed static objects fixed;
  • XP counting for targets destroyed by the AI gunner fixed. Each object destroyed by a gunner should now be added to pilot’s log.

We proudly present you...

Dear pilots,

We present you a new game in the IL-2 Sturmovik series. It was both hard and enjoyable to work on it. It’s a pleasure to be creating a continuation of the game that once won the world’s recognition in the genre - yes, it’s no easy to make something worth everyone’s attention. We’ve been persistent on our way to the dream, we started as players and turned into makers. The very game release proves that tenacious dreamers can accomplish their goals.

And the goal was to create the game withing minimum time because the IL-2 series had lived through some hard times and significant gaps between releases. We worried that players might forget the genre in the wreckless rithm of modern entertainment industry, and that we might release a game too complicated and slow for players. But we never lost our focus on the very core of flight simulation. Physics, aerodynamics, ballistics, and precise recreation of military vehicles. We wanted you not only know but also - feel like you’re flying. Feel yourselves surrounded by the clean ice-cold air, feel the power of a combat machine in your hands. The game remains on the base of persistent and continuos wish to improve your skills. And we, keeping this base gameplay untouched, added the best features of other genres to create one of the most hardcore and honest games on the market.

We enjoyed making the IL-2 Sturmovik: Battle of Stalingrad, that was so cool, and we hope you’ll enjoy playing it as well. We’re sure that the game will work correctly on your PCs but we are ready to make all necessary corrections if something goes wrong. If you encounter any technical difficulties, please, submit a ticket to our customer support, or tell us about your issue on the forum or on our social network pages - we’ll read it. Well, we’ve taken off, all parameters are ok. We’ll see what’s next later, when we climb a little higher. Thank you for your enthusiasm and your trust.

Thanks for your support,
IL-2 Sturmovik: Battle of Stalingrad Team

Battle of Stalingrad Falls Way Short of the Mark!
Firstly it should be renamed The 'Winter' Battle of Stalingrad because the winter map is all you get - no summer or autumn maps. And perhaps even the word 'battle' is inapropriate given that instead of the massive Stalingrad campaign involving vast numbers of planes, tanks, infantry and equipment you are presented with a bleak landscape where very little action takes place. You would hardly know there is a war going on let alone one of the most bitterly fought campaigns in history. And on top of that, there are so few available planes to fly. I don't expect a sim to be 100 % historically accurate, but really, a Stalingrad air battle simulation without JU52s? I can just about live with the fact there are no ME 110s (just about) but no JU52s? The whole point of the final phase of the Stalingrad air battle (and I repeat that is all you get) was providing the trapped German army with vital supplies from the air. In this important part of the battle JU52s were key. To a lesser extent the HE111 also contributed to the air-drops (and you do at least get this plane in the under-crowded hangar) but the JU52 was the principal work-horse. Making a Stalingrad sim without it is a huge oversight. In addition the different phases of the so called 'Campaign' are simply repetitions of the same meagre selection of missions given another title. Nothing more than scripted, non-dynamic quick missions with little or no variation. Last, but by no means least, you have to pay extra for two planes you should have received with the main product in the first place. After spending 50 euros on an incomplete sim it is a slap in the face to the customer to have to dish out another 18 euros for one additional aircraft. And by the way, DON'T. These aircraft are not in the same league as DCS World aircraft. For example, the flight characteristics of the FW 190 are almost laughable. Generally considered to be one of the most nimble, agile fighter of WWII, this simulated version snatches into a spin at the least provocation. It spins when you bank steeply and even during a simple barrell roll! Loops and Immelmans are performed reluctantly and the controls lock when you go into in a steep dive. The worst 190 flight model I have come across to date - a complete waste of money. (By the way, my HOTAS joystick equipment is top-notch.)
In general this over-priced sim is a missed opportunity. Instead of the high quality sim that flight enthusiasts were hoping for it is simply an upgraded IL2 1946, but without the variety, and with far fewer planes and far less playability. The graphics are ok, but they fall way short of Cliffs of Dover (which is better than BOS in every respect) and, inexplicably, there are no clickable cockpits! As for the unlocks, it is ridiculous that you are forced to grind your way through hours of mind-numbing, repetitous campaign missions just to unlock features you have already paid for. These locked features include gun-pods, rockets and even bombs! Incredibly, you have to do this for every single aircraft type! I suggest you wait and see before you buy. If the developers invest time and effort into completing this product and fixing the many problems it could potentially be an interesting simulation, and worth the price. But for the moment, don't buy it.

Well, after playing for over 4hrs, I love it!

I've been playing flight simulators since the early 80's, and actually that's the reason I got into computers to begin with. I remember a time when a person could walk into a computer game store (yes, it only sold computer games, not console games), and that's all you would see on the shelves.... Flight Simulators!

It's sad that now you don't see Flight Sims that much, so I'm very pleased to see that 1C/777 are doing what they can to keep the genre alive. I played the hell out of the original IL2 games, and still do actually. I was so excited when I heard that they were coming out with a new IL2. And I'm just blown away!

The graphics are top knotch! The realism, again top knotch! The fact that I can't lean my head out the window (using TrackIR head tracking) until I open the canopy is freaking cool! The way the cockpit rattles when you fire up the engine, and the damage models when objects are hit by bullets is unbelievable!

Now there are a few things that I've seen that people are complaining about, such as the inability to use multiple monitors, and the way you have to gain EXP to unlock paint schemes and new guns and so on. But if you ask me, that's all really minor stuff. I use one monitor, and with the head tracking using TrackIR I don't see the need for multiple monitors. And I sort of like the EXP system that it has, gives me something to work for, other than just getting through missions.

I was a little dissapointed in the number of planes you are able to fly, the original IL2 games had freaking tons of planes! I'm hoping that 1C/777 release new planes, and if this game is as big of a hit as I think it will be, I'm sure they will. Unfortunatly I'm also sure that each new plane will be through purchasing (looks like they will be priced at around $20 by looking at the two extra planes they have available now). But personally I don't mind, the company has to make money, and in this day and age, where the younger generation just wants FPS games, paying $20 for a new high quality plane is nothing. I've spent way more than that on my other flight simulator addons.

So would I recommend this game? HELL YEA!

Even if you have never flown a flight simulator before, this is a good way to get started!

A solid release, far better than CLOD. While it definitely has some way to go as to being the premier WW2 combat sim of its generation, it is moving in that direction.

I will just sum up my feelings about this sim.
pros:
Sound and visuals are exceptional, the sim looks stunning.
The flight model feels right, damage model also.
cons:
Unlocks and XP - this is not how you do this in flight sim. I honestly don't know why the devs bothered with this nonsense.
So far campaign did not impressed me, feels like some random missions thrown together.
For the asking price - not a lot of content.
No mission editor - but its coming as far as I know.

More cons so why I recommend the game? Because its the best WWII flight sim out there as of now in my honest opinion. Sure, CoD and good old Il-2 1946 has a ton lots of planes to offer, but with the quality od BoS the immersion is just fantastic.
I just really hope, I really hope that the devs will provide us with more content, because BoS is a really solid platform. It would be tragic if this title dies out.

I used to play the original IL2 Sturmovik game and currently play Rise of Flight and War Thunder and this game is just fantastic. It has a more realistic feel and absolutly beautiful graphics. Its easy enough to learn the basics of this game although I would recommend getting a joystick to play this game, prefferably one with rudder control.

Looking forward to more games and more expansion in this game!

so far so good,its got all you need for a good sim
FM feels right,controllers are relatively easy to sort.sounds and graphics are reasonable

apart from the UI and campaign design decisions which i dont like,its hardly a deal breaker.

unlocks are not required to play MP effectively
but any mug worth his salt can unlock the items they want within a couple of SP campaign missions anyway.

not much of an authentic or nostalgic feel to the campaign or UI in general,but,its the flying and shooting is what counts right?
its got the goods as a combat sim and its only early days

buy it and support our genre,its only money.not like thats worth anything thesedays

Is this game worth buying?

It depends what you are after. For me, yes, here's why:

- I have experienced slow starts to previous IL2 games, they have all risen to being great sims, and, for the hours and entertainment that I have had, they have all proved to be fantastic value for money. (This has been due to excellent mods for at least one of the series.)

- In it's release state it is better than the previous instalment of IL2 was at its launch.

- The core flight models/mechanics feel great to me, although I do not have any real life or historical knowledge of what to expect.

- Menu options and the unlocks don't bother me too much; the graphics are great for my setup on the highest setting and I've got too much to learn at the moment to be that upset by the 'unlock' process. I spend my time on the missions seeing if I can squeeze a few more km/h in level flight, and I'm always in need of honing my fighting skills, even against the AI/ground targets. I can however understand how those who backed the game from early days may have issues, similarly the more experienced users may find the forced campaign a grind (also of course those who only want Multiplayer).

- I budget carefully for games, and tend to focus on a few certain game genres, combat flight sims being one of these types. This does mean I am prepared to pay more for these games, I don't consider them a 'casual' purchase, I also don't really care if there is a FPS which is going for £20 less; I don't buy dog food even if it is on special offer, simply because I don't actually have a dog.

- I have had many more moments in this game so far which have made me smile, such as either visual ones or events in the missions, or my disastrous landing/combat skills, than negative moments.

- The weather is great, I love it, even if it is a pain. I've found myself having to fly by instruments a fair few times as I've plunged into a bank of cloud

- I play on the highest realism - this is a challenge, but the reward when something goes right is great. Having the assistance/HUD turned off so you just use the dials to fly is how I personally think you get the most from this game (series)

Some negatives:

- You can't have external view in the campaign when on the higher (expert) difficulty setting, there is just normal (external possible) or expert (external blocked) settings. In previous games I like to view the outside when cruising or limping home, mainly to see what sort of damage (always nicely modelled) can be seen! A shame I can't enjoy this at the moment.

- The single player (SP) campaign needs a little more life/immersion; e.g. medals instead of acheivements, better stats for your pilot showing clearly what has been claimed as a kill, hit ratio of bullets etc., maybe AI characters tracked in the squadron and so on...

- A bit more intensity from time to time (in SP), sometimes it seems the mission is too isolated and that there is nothing going on elsewhere, however I have had some missions where on the way home I've flown past what appears to be a completely separate interaction and it has been brilliant.

I hope that this game does get the opportunity to grow, it can definitely become something epic; patience with the previous IL2s has always been rewarded both in learning the ropes and developing skills and also the game's development. It may be worth noting I enjoy simply flying in IL2 sometimes, this was the same for me in previous IL2s, I'm not always after constant action and can appreciate the lulls (but remember to look behind you) and I get as much of a kick out of landing safely than combat sometimes.

If you like flight sims, have the funds available without going hungry, then I would say go ahead, drop into the seat of a LaGG or whatever takes your fancy and check out the Battle of Stalingrad!

- A XP based unlock system that forces you to play the campaign for X amounts of hours to get things in the MP&SP.
- Graphics are ok but there is pretty much no options menu to speak of, 4 presets, motion blur is always on which makes me sick and it has somewhat bad performence for what you get in player count and visuals.
- The map itself lacks a lot of things, it feels like an empty space with ~8-10 planes fighting it out above what is supposed to be one of the biggest battles in history. The smoke and random explosions in Stalingrad help but besides that not much going on.
- No proper missions, just randomly generated skirmishes that play out the same way everytime with a not so bright AI.
- Sound is good and the feeling of being in a plane is certainly convincing.
- A variation of skins, you have to grind to unlock what you've already paid for though.

If they add a proper options menu and remove the unlock system I could recommend this game.

First of: I really like the game. The game itself in MP is great. But right now you HAVE TO play single player campaign ( with every plane ) to get the "unlocks" like 4 MGs in A3, gunpods etc. Until you have everything unlocked that you want to have it is basically just grinding alone.
If you are not interessted in playing single player do NOT buy BoS at the moment. If you enjoy SP ofc buy it.

As much as I'd like to enjoy this game I just can't, it's full of stupid trade offs between Sim and arcade, it's got a stupid modfication unlock system, It will probably end up being a DLC cash cow and it's far from complete despite being 'released' you're far better off with Cliffs of Dover.

DO NOT BUY THIS FLIGHT SIM!!.... i paid a rediculous price of 60 bucks to find it took me over an hour to try to login and even launch the game...I had to download it from the company website even to get it to launch.... After playing 3 missions...you are assigned a third mission to shoot down a SINGLE BOMBER....the game crashes....after i spend 10 minutes on a bombers tail ......you see there is this this "motion blur" that when you move a slight movement on your flightstick the enemy blurs out and you cant see him.... I tried the same mission 6 times..and every time..it crashes and you fail the mission....DO NOT >>>NOOOO do not waste your money on this stupid crap.... I even went out and bought a high end flight stick controller cos thats what the game requires... ..... This is the worst money ive ever wasted on a flight sim...next to DCS world combat simulaters as welll, which are even worse and more stupid than this one...
Also when you try to land your plane..thats impossible....you will crash no matter what you do....
There are no landing tutorials......even to give you a clue.... Ive been a real time pilot in the real world..landed planes myself..and this...is just broken and stupid......

The atmosphere and graphics are good, but I feel marketing has become the primary focus of so many gamemakers now. The game is hard, and I have played many flight sims, but frankly couldn't be bothered to try to turn my PC into a flying machine financially and otherwise.... crashed on all 10 of my takeoff attempts. In the air on low settings the game if beautiful... I love looking around the cockpit, but I just don't dare move my stick for fear of a crash...

if you are or always wanted to be an amateur pilot and want to have to feel like you are pressing 120 buttons on a real vintage dashboard just to prevent your plane from going into a stall this game is for you.

My negative rating comes from the following: I feel a bit fooled that I invested in an Alpha (also bought 2 extra planes) that promised me a dynamic campaign with depth of experience and instead I get a half-baked campaign I could have had in IL-2 1946. Very dissapointed... I am supprised they call this version ready when it seems to be so much less than promised.

Ohh, today launch day, I know many people had Early Access version and yet there was a total of 16 pilots on at midnigth GMT +1... that is dissapointing. It is actually fun to just jump into the plane and open and close the cockpit without daring to touch the controls... I remember the dev saying in an interview "we want a game even complete newbs to flight sims can just jump into" ... I am no newb, I mastered Red Baron 3d, even did good at this company's Rise of Flight, but I am not a trained Messeschmit pilot nor have the time to become one.

Unlock of planes for a game this expensive is INSANE. Bad choice. Ohhh and my DLC's don't work and they did in early access.

Pros: Detail of aircraft

Cons: Game is hard, campaign is hard (is it really so hard to make something as good as Dynamix's classic Red Baron?), "fun" factor they promised is not really there more than game released 20 or 10 years ago.

The best combat flight sim since IL-2:1946. Buy a joystick, learn to fly, be amazed. Seriously, just go do your first bombing at night-time. Go fight competitively in multiplayer. Hop into a gunner position on a bomber. Adjust your prop pitch, A/F mixture, Radiator/Oil grilles, flaps, bombsight, etc or just play normal and have the computer optimize it for you as your focus on dogfights and bombing.

Seriously, this game is awesome. Get it, learn it, enjoy!

Not the greatest SIM, Very far from the worst..

Only played for a few hours but i'm really enjoying this. There are only a few minor things that I kind of dislike, but for the most part it's a very well created sim and looks pretty damn good.

They could do away with the unlocks but hey its not a sim killer
graphics are pretty amazing
the missions are a bit bland and the friendly ai planes just get in my way (think they are more hungry for the kill than I am) - although i have not looked at how to give them orders yet so probably my own fault
flight dynamics are pretty good
damage models are awesome

that is all...... for now..

About 10 years back I was really buissy flying IL-2 Sturmovik. I spent all my free time after work on it for many years.

But one important thing happend to me. I dicovered 3D. I flew FSX for a couple of years because that SIM was close to exellent regarding 3D. If the SIM/game didnt have 3D, I did not buy it.

I have read a lot about this SIM before I bought it. No one said anything about 3D.
Anyhow, this SIM beats even FSX as I see it. ALL 3D works almost exellent, (except around the widows in clouds, and waypoint-icons are not yet fixed), but I hope thouse small bugs soon will dissapear.

After flying IL-2 Sturmovik for all these years, this SIM finally appear. As I see it, other WW2
SIM´s are far from this class.
If you, the reader, have been convinced that a SIM/game is not worth spending time on if it don´t have exellent 3D, this is (when the the above mentioned bugs have bee sorted out), the best WW2-SIM that you can buy today.

I have heard some talks about the flight models. After all these years, flying IL-Sturmovik for hours most nights, I cant say that there is something wrong with this SIM-models, (maybe a little bit harder to land if anything :)

And when the Campaign came out, I didn´t even try it for a couple of days. Starting in the air was not real to me. But when I finally tryed a few missions, I was amazed at the way is was done. After just a few missions, take off was also from the ground, (and that was not as easy as it was in Olegs very exellent IL-2 Sturmovik SIM´s).

I just finally want to say, if the work on this SIM is kept up as in Rise of Flight, I don´t think there will be any real competition for a long time, regarding exellent WW2 SIM´s.

IL2:BOS is a game made for me. I'm new-ish to flight sims, have a joystick, TrackIR (actually a custom FreeTrack rig), and I prefer the frantic, tactical combat of dogfights to other aspects of flight simulators like systems management and realistic navigation. For me, Battle of Stalingrad gets it just right.

The game presents two preset difficulty options, Normal and Expert, and options for customization. In neither of the presets are flight mechanics or damage models compromised for ease. The fidelity of the flight simulation is top notch (maybe shy of some DCS modules, but it's hard for me to say - I certainly don't have any personal experience with WWII airplanes), and the feeling of immersion that this creates is wonderful. Dogfights are intense and breathtaking!

The game has received some flak from some of the more die-hard flight sim fans (who disparagingly compare the game to War Thunder). They complain (perhaps rightly) that the ease-of-use features kill the simulation, even on Expert difficulty. I share none of these concerns. To me, a beginner, the game focuses on exactly what I like about combat flight simulations: combat flight!

I like that I can choose between short (no takeoffs or landings) and long missions. I appreciate being able to turn icons on and off. I like that I can elect to use complex engine management, or leave that to the AI if I just want to focus on dogfighting. I like auto-level, time compression... all the options that allow a relative beginner like me to play the game as casually or as hardcore as I want to.

I had hoped we'd see an imprevement in the single player by the game's release. Now that it's out, I'm a bit dissapointed by the fairly bland campaign. Oh well. I'll hope for a fix, and in the meantime will play more multiplayer. Regardless, the game is quickly becoming one of my favorite flight sims of all time, up there with Rise of Flight (by the same studio), and IL-2 1946.

This is what IL-2 Sturmovik: Cliffs of Dover should have been. Bringing in the RoF and IL-2 teams under one roof was a genius move and it's really paid off. The flight mechanics are spot on and it doesn't just feel like WW2 planes with the RoF engine. This feels like it was built from the ground up to be a realistic (but fun) WW2 flight simulator. The UI is terrific, I've played many sims flight or otherwise and this game by far has the cleanest, friendliest UI of any. I hope new comers to the flight sim world start here because not only is it a great sim it's extremely easy to jump right into. The addition of short missions (optional takeoff/landing) will really help ease new players into the fun and the campaign seems well adapted.
