“Technically the ‘main feature’ in the Thinking with Time Machine mod is a time machine ..., which is great and all but look, LEGS.”

This is nice... A bit confusing at first, just getting the controls down. The idea is brilliant, very fun, and really trippy. Glad none of this is cannon, that's for sure. The visuals are pretty nice, glowy texturing, mixed with regualr aperture. The only thing that annoyed me though was the open aperture through the windows. Since it was a skybox it made lights look massive..

This mod requires ownership of Portal 2. This review also assumes you already own and have completed Portal 2, my review of which can be read here.

Mod: Thinking with Time Machine
For the game: Portal 2
Developer: Ruslan "Stridemann" Rybka
Publisher: SignHead Studio
Released: 18 April, 2014
Genre: First-Person Puzzler
Setting: 21 January, 2021, Aperture Science Enrichment Center, Upper Michigan, U.S.A., Earth (though in Portal canon, the time-setting would be "at least 50,000 years" after Portal 1)
Canon status: Non-canon
Spoiler-free plot summary: After the events of Portal 2, you, Chell, discover that the field of wheat you enter upon exiting Aperture Science is actually just another part of the still mysterious science facility. Upon entering an elevator she finds outside of the fake wheat room, Chell is given back her Aperture Science Handheld Portal Device, this time with a pseudo-time machine PDA attachment.

Full review: Thinking with Time Machine (named after Portal's advertising campaign "Thinking with portals"), is a mod relatively the same length as Portal 1 (my review of which can be read here), and is equal in difficulty. There is absolutely no story, apart from one scene about half-way through the campaign.

The main game mechanic of Thinking with Time Machine is pretty self explanatory; using a device which records your actions, which you then replay, in order to solve test chambers with your past self (other games similar to this are Time Slip for the Net Yaroze and Chronotron on Kongregate).

The ten test chambers in the campaign are absolutely brilliant; not too hard, not too easy, and leaves one in awe at the genius behind them. Though I did have a bit of trouble with chamber 5 because I wasn't informed about a new game mechanic, cubes and spheres being able to float on the ceiling, so I wasn't aware it existed. Not being able to solve this chamber, I gave up and decided to look up a video guide to solve it. What's even more infuriating is that this mechanic is only present in this one chamber.

Unlike Portals 1 and 2, there are no advanced or challenge maps or modes included in Thinking with Time Machine, which is a bit disappointing, as I would have liked to have played in some more difficult chambers, and have a longer experience. Fortunately, carried over from Portal 2 is Steam Workshop support. Though there is no official co-op campaign like Portal 2, co-op maps can be made with the map maker.

As said before, there is very little plot. All that's established is that it's the year 2021 (which, in Portal canon, is an outright fabrication), and ATLAS and P-body from Portal 2's co-op campaign are using you to find a time machine GLaDOS has hidden somewhere.

A short, simple review for a short, simple mod. Do I recommend Thinking with Time Machine? Yes; it's free, it can entertain you for the day, and it's a nice piece of dessert after the meal that is Portal 2.
