This game isn't anything more than a single gimmick being exploited in a not very imaginative way. You play the entire game running backwards on a 2D-platform, and the only thing to do is jumping at the right moment (and once in a while catching some objects). Maybe the idea is slightly original, but the execution certainly is not: everything in this little platformer has been done lots of time before, and in a much better way. Most of the jumps are fairly easy, but some require split-second accuracy.

Games like this depend for their succes to a large extent on the quality of the level-design, and that's where Spoiler Alert fails miserably. Almost all of the levels are short to the extreme: most only last 10 (!!) seconds. Granted, there are a hundred of them in total, but the final feeling is one of complete desintegration.

Regrettably, graphics aren't great either: they have some retro-feeling, but not enough to make them cute; the repetitive music ennerved me a lot. All in all, this game is only there for gamers who want the trading cards (some of these tend to sell for above average prices), and the 10 achievements are fairly easy, so this one is recommended for those who want their 100% completed list being upped by one. Otherwise, I can't find any good reason to play this one.

Spoiler Alert is a one-trick pony that wears out its welcome long long long before you reach its very short conclusion (beginning?)

The idea, short-burst reverse platformming, unfortunately is far more clever than the execution. Uninspiring levels with no room for player creativity leave players repeating 10-second chunks over and over to master the exact sequence of split-second moves the game intends.

It would have been slightly less annoying had the devs thought to include an option to turn the music off separately from the sound effects. After about 14 repetitive levels of frentic midi-accordion mariachi hell, I chose to play in silence.

The only reason to pick this game up (hopefully for free or very cheap) is to get the relatively fast achievements. Spoiler Alert is mercifully pretty short, I spent longer idling cards than playing.

"OK" i thought "this sound's interesting and one i would like to play" but i was to find out that even though it sound's good on paper OH DEAR this game has one gimic and it outstay's its welcome long before you finish its very short story mode (to be honest half of my play time was actually waiting for the trading card's to drop).
Now you do unlock other mode's of play like an extra world and a speed mode,but all these do is add a little extra play time to what is a very mediocre release.

Ok on to the bread and butter of the game and first of the story,well you can call it that but really it doesnt have one other than you play as a spicy chili pepper knight and have to finish the game by getting back to the start and unsaving princess tomato (yes you read right princess TOMATO "SAY WHATTTTTTTTTTTT").
So the story doesnt really matter or play any part in the game and thats ok in some release's but lets keep going and see why that would have helped this game rise above what it is.
Ok next up graphic's,now lets be honest graphic's dont make a game (they never have and they never will) but sometime's when playing a game you really do feel that better graphic's would have helped and this game is one of those exception's,and to be honest for me the art style was a bit of a turn off.The graphic's smack low budget and even if this was intended for me it was a real low point and to be honest i have seen better in game's that you can download for free.
So next up sound and spoken dialogue,well there is no spoken dialogue so onto the sound in game and "AARRGGHHHHHHHHHH" it does get on your nerve's so much so that you will turn it of whilst playing (well i did as it was driving me NUT'S).
The game play mechanic of going backward's to finish the game is a clever one but as i have said it out stays its welcome very quickly and is'nt as clever as it like's to think and beleive it actually is.I mean to be honest and fair to the game it is'nt an expensive one but whilst you play you realise that it is going to be one game you finish rather quickly and after you have it will just be another game gathering dust in your library of title's that you will never (and i mean EVER) play again.

So in closing not a game i would reccomend to anyone in a bundle of even (sadly to say) for free,i know there will be some who will enjoy this game but i personally found it both a chore and a bore to play through,and to be honest i really hope the game never gets a sequel but i will let Steve Carell have the last word on that point!!!!!!!

The game's entire gimmick is that you play it entirely in reverse. You unkill enemies, uncollect coins, etc. It sounds interesting and novel but after 15-20 levels, it gets rather boring. The levels are VERY short (like less than 10 seconds short), and the hit detection is atrocious and inconsistent.

It plays like the original Super Mario Bros on NES (and that's a generous comparison), but a super lite version.

Your character moves on his own (backwards) at a set speed and the only control you really have is the up arrow to jump. The length of holding up doesn't appear to make a difference in your length of jump. On one level (out of 100), you can actually make him change directions... again, only on one level. On a handful of levels you have to catch a projectile with z (to unfire said projectile). Each level must be completed a specific way, so there is no experimenting, exploring, or even figuring something out. You cannot choose whether to collect a coin or not, or kill this enemy or not. Each level is essentially press up 2-5 times at the exact moment the game wants you to; Succeed and go to a new combination or fail and do it again until you don't fail.

A nitpick is that the levels actually get harder as you get closer to the beginning of the game, which makes sense in a progression sort of way, but doesn't in a I'm getting close to the very beginning of the game but either way this would be difficult to manage.

Bottom line: the game takes maybe an hour to 100% complete it, getting all of the achievements. It takes longer to get all the trading cards to drop than to complete the game. It does come with a level creator but I did not mess with it.

If it's under $1 and you want to add a perfect game to your achievement list then by all means get it, but I really cannot recommend it to anyone looking for fun. 0.5/10

Spoiler Alert is a 2D side scrolling comedy platformer that has you running backward from right to left in very small levels. Why do you run backward? Because the start of the game kicks off with you completing the game. Then you're forced to play the levels in rewind. Dead enemies will need to get hopped on to unkill them. Live enemies will need to get avoided. Transparent coins need to get collected and standard coins need to get avoided.

If you do something the game doesn't want you to do, then it creates a 'Time Paradox' and you're forced to restart the level. Each level runs for about 5 or 10 seconds, so its pretty easy to get right back where you were. Not just that, but the game is very easy. There are 90 levels broken into three worlds of 30 levels. Then on top of that there are 10 extra levels in the collector's edition for only $4 more! Wow 100 levels you say? Sign me up! No, again they're all around 10 seconds long, making for a game that you can complete all its content in under 30 minutes. Maybe 45 if you're awful at the game.

Oh but wait, there's a level editor so you can make your own levels! That sounds cool, but then you need to select a small, medium or large level. Even the largest level feels short. It feels like it should be a mobile game for how bare bones this is. The $3 price tag proves it is better suited for a mobile platform and not Steam. Think of the creative possibilities. You can make your own challenges, because the game sure didn't do it for you! Game too easy? Well make a super difficult challenging level that's over in a mere 10 seconds! Want a level full of exploration? Nope, you're out of luck, because you're stuck going one way at the game's own pace.

The controls are super simple! Jump button and well... jump button. There is no actual movement like left or right, you're stuck moving one way at the game's pace. Not just that, but even when you step onto tiles that make you run fast (or slow in the bonus content), when you jump off them there's no momentum. So you're going fast and then you jump into a slow standard jump, then land and you're going fast again. The game is super easy, so its not like you'll get killed or anything.

Does only jumping sound dull? Well there are three power ups that consist of headgear! Amongst the three of them, they do two different things. The dragon head and hammer head will let you extinguish fireballs and blow out hammers that get thrown at you. The moon helmet lets you roll underneath of low platforms and spikes. To get them you need to jump on where they are and you're forced to lose them when the game wants you to or else again, it will create a time paradox.

Man its so cool having a game this restrictive. You do exactly what it wants! Well except for the three secret blocks. You don't need to get those. There's no time paradox there.

At the end of each level, you're greeted with a menu that lets you view your time, go to the next level, select a level or replay. It breaks the flow. Heck it buffers a 15 minute game into a longer game. Super Mario didn't have something asking if you'd like to retry the level you've just beaten. I guess Spoiler Alert knows you want a perfect score with 0 time paradoxes. You're obsessive. You speed run things all the time and want to shave seconds off your time... but well you're stuck running at the same speed. The only way to shave those seconds off is to not die. So everyone will have the exact same time. You can also select any level you've unlocked.

Not only do you have to unkill enemies, but there are certain ones that when you unkill them they spawn back into their space ships on top of you. So you need to time your jumps to get on top of them before they reassemble. Not just that, but some dead enemies don't need to get unkilled, even if they're dead. How can you tell? Are they different colored or different enemies? Nope. You just jump over them so they can come back to life and throw a hammer at you. Then using one of the mandatory power ups, blow the hammer back at them. Because apparently whomever went through the game originally that the game doesn't show you, must have thrown a hammer at an enemy to kill it.

Its a mind bending game. The power ups don't really blow things out, because they must spit fire from the dragons head and throw hammers from the hammerhead. The fire isn't aimed in the right direction though. Its coming from enemies when it should be coming from you. The hit detection is a little iffy too. Landing on spikes or getting a coin that you shouldn't have will pause the game to tell you its a time paradox. Well in the pause I could see that I wasn't touching spikes, nor did I collect a coin that I shouldn't have. Hey whatever, it didn't cost me ten minutes of gameplay.

I ended up replaying the game to get all of the achievements and it took me another 40 or so minutes. Hey at least its all the achievements in 90 minutes. The $3 or $7 for the collector's edition really boils down to how do you value your time per dollar. Its a boring game, but you're only there for 30 - 90 minutes in all. If you're a creative person, you can get more out of the level editor, but there are better games with better level editors out there.

Avoid this game. Its a quick money grab with a gimmick. On a phone it might be worth it to play through if you're stuck somewhere for 30 minutes. Who knows maybe you have an iPad that you'll be stuck somewhere with. On a train, on a bus, in a car ride or a hot air balloon. You never know!

Background

Indie games come in all shapes and sizes. With a far more limited budget and development team, many indie titles focus on one particular aspect of a game and accentuate that as much as possible, while shedding the negatives. For games like To The Moon and Gone Home, it’s the narrative that shines through. For games such as Braid, Fez and Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons, it’s the unique underlying game mechanic that drives the game home. Then, there are games that rely on humour and/or unique gimmick to build intrigue, including games such as DLC Quest and Evoland. This final group is by far the least interesting of the bunch, and is typically the least successful. Sadly, Spoiler Alert falls into this group.

Setting

For reasons that I can’t describe to you, you play as a walking chilli pepper. Very early in the game, you face the final boss and voila, the credits roll. Have you completed the game? Of course not – this is merely the beginning. The game then forces you to go through the entirety of the game in reverse.

Gameplay

The game is split into three main worlds, each with 30 mini-levels which are approximately 10 seconds long. Your goal is to walk from the right hand side of the screen to the left. Each level has a number of enemies and/or obstacles for you to un-tackle. For example, if there’s a flattened enemy in your path (i.e. you jumped on it earlier) then you have to jump on it again whilst backtracking to un-flatten it. Similarly, some of the coins in the level may be slightly faded out, indicating that these coins were retrieved. Whilst playing the game in reverse, you have to grab these faded coins (to “un-collect” them), whilst avoiding the non-faded out coins which are coins that you apparently never collected in the non-reversed playthrough. It’s an incredible simple concept that’s difficult to put into words.

Aside from jumping, the game also occasionally gives you various other abilities to work with. The dinosaur/dragon powerup, for example, allows you to shoot fireballs. However, because you’re playing in reverse, the fireballs come out from your enemies and you’re tasked with “catching” the fireball. The hammerhead shark power-up works similarly, except you’re catching a hammer (which travels in a parabolic arc) rather than a fireball (which travels in a straight line).
There are two ways to fail each level. The first is death, which can occur when you touch an enemy/projectile/spikes. The second is by causing a time paradox by doing something you supposedly didn’t do the first time around. For example, if you encounter an enemy that’s alive, jumping on it and killing it will create a time paradox and you’ll have to start the level over. A similar thing occurs when you collect a coin that wasn’t collected the first time. After you complete each level, you’ll be given a grade, which lies somewhere between “Perfect”, if you don’t die or create any time paradoxes, to “Good”, if you die/create paradoxes more than once. You read that right – the worst you can do in this game is “good”. This is the kind of condescending ♥♥♥♥ that would put primary school teachers to shame.

And that’s it. No, really. The game is the textbook definition of a one-trick pony, and it’s not a particularly mind-blowing trick by any means. When the novelty of traveling backwards wears off (and this will occur very early on), all you’ll be left with is a very empty shell of a mediocre-at-best platformer. The enemies are bland and uninspired, the power-ups are dull and none of the platforming elements are particularly challenging. Furthermore, your characters on rails – he constantly walks backwards at the same speed and there’s nothing you can do to change his velocity. What the whole game boils down to is a simple game where you have to press “jump” when appropriate. If you fail, you try again until you time it correctly. Often, you’ll find that the game plays more like a rhythm game than a platformer, and a very shallow one at that.

With that in mind, it’s both a blessing and a curse that the game is incredibly short. After completing the game, you unlock a “speedrun mode” which connects each of the levels back-to-back from the end to the beginning. Even with my frail-old-man-reflexes (which required me to attempt some levels multiple times), my final time was a tiny bit over 20 minutes. I would wager that the majority of the more competent platformer players could do it in 15 minutes or so. The fact that the game and its gimmick gets tiresome well before the end of its short lifespan speaks volumes.

Presentation

The aesthetic is made up of the same old flash style found ubiquitously through indie titles, perhaps most famously in Castle Crashers and Battleblock Theatre. It’s colourful and eye-pleasing and suits the cartoony tone of the game. The upbeat and Mexican-influenced soundtrack complements this further, although each track is short and loops repeatedly, which may bother some of you. The only sound effect that I remember from the game is the weird “HRGUGH” sound that your chilli bean produces upon death.

Overall Impression

It saddens me to hear that this game was in development for two years. The developers certainly had a goal in mind, and for the most part they did capitalise on their one idea and did successfully build a game around it. Unfortunately, the final product feels lacklustre. It tries to exploit one little gimmick that can’t stand on its own two feet, and there’s just not enough quality content surrounding the gimmick to solidify the game. It’s something you’d expect to find as an averagely-rated flash game on Newgrounds rather than a fully-released Steam title. For that reason, I can’t really recommend this to anyone.

83 cents (or thereabouts) for 90 minutes of game time And there's still one trading card to drop. But you know what, with its 'Momento' style mechanic this was different, it has a sense of humour and it's worth a run through for gaming enthusiasts.

This one is tough to recommend and at the same time tough to thumbs down.

Its got an interesting concept, as you play the entire game backwards. The game starts with the closing credits and you run it backwards from there all the way to the first level. For... some apparent reason anyway. The graphics are colorful and bright.

On the flip side, there is no replay value whatsoever, as there is only one way to do things, and once its done, its pretty much done. The music is atrocious, as are the limited sound effects. Also, while it wouldn't be very fair, the levels are not consistent in difficulty as a regular game would be. To illustrate what i mean, the final level in the last world (which is the first level in this game.. cause it goes backwards.. get it?) is super simple, as its introducing you to the concept and controls. While later, in the first world (the third.. backwards remember?) it gets pretty challenging. While this makes sense, because the game is going backwards, its not consistent with how a "real" game would play. In my opinion, if you are going to have a game set itself apart with a unique concept, you should probably go all in.

After rereading my review, I think I convinced myself to not recommend it. Easy 100% achievements if you're into that though.

This is a platformer for people who generally don't like platformers, or who are not so good at timing. There are 100 levels and 10-15 of them will take you more than a few tries to complete. Each level takes less than a minute. So it is pretty easy, but is that so wrong? I don't think so, but many commenters do.

There is no story, beyond the fact you beat it and are going backwards. The replay value is moderate, with the levels and trying to perfect them for the achievements and/or your own satisfaction; then the speedrun mode, which is continuous and rogue-like, if you are looking for a perfect run... I didn't get that far into it. I played a couple of hours and enjoyed them. The art is good, the levels quick, and the card economy (as of this review) is NUTS. I spent about 25 cents US on this in a bundle and it was worth it. It is currently 74c on Steam, and is worth that. Might be worth the $2.99 retail, as it is pretty fair. 7.5/10

Spoiler Alert is a nice little game and sort of refreshing. Basically, you are a chili pepper fighting aliens and what have you. However, you start at the end and work your way back through time to the beginning. Other than that, it's basically like Super Mario as far as gameplay, only you are obviously doing things in reverse, which often entials intentionally missing enemies and coins rather than trying to gather them. The very beginning (i.e. the end of the game) is kind fo funny and makes the hour long journey all worth it lol.

Very nice, game with seamless gameplay. Does what it sets out to do in stellar fashion.

What kind of idiot jumps over coins?

This is a fun little game with a neat concept, I beat it in 40 minutes and I was entertained the whole time - but I don't see myself ever replaying it. Pick it up in a bundle or a sale.

With hardly any effort and 48 minutes of my time I got a +1 to my game completion count.

You were expecting a long review weren't you?
Let me break it down.

-There are 100 stages but most of them take seconds to complete.
-All you have to do is hit the jump button at the right moments.
-There are 1-6 button inputs per stage
-Sometimes you press the right-trigger

This is a cute idea, and not much else. If I wanted to write more about this game I'd have to make up stories about my life, throw together a bunch of unrelated anectodes, and conclude with an article on how Spoiler Alert compares to The Great Depression.

I spent 10 minutes on the game which is how long it took to complete the intro + first world. People complained it was a short game, but I am glad it was short. I don't want to have to open it again. It was a one trick pony. It had a decent concept and couldn't do anything appealing with it. Even for a bundle game, not really happy with it.
I think in the future, it would be cool to see certain effects to go in reverse, like how the rain is. Maybe with explosions, things coming out of the ground/water, scarring, blood/limbs (something to the effect, not necessarily violent). Imagine a world where nothing made sense out of context, but it goes into context in reverse in a humorous way. I am saddened this game didn't do more.

The game is definately NOT what you're expecting. This games is super easy, short and not worth the price.

HOWEVER.

The game inserts a very original and nice idea and I'm thumbing it up because I wanna see more games like this. More polished, better level designs, and everything.

Really easy and short platformer where you play the game backwards. You scroll to the left and uncollect coins and unkill enemies by timing jumps. That's really all there is to say about this game. It was so short and easy that I beat the game in exactly 69 minutes, before all the cards could even drop. For 3 bucks I guess it's not so bad but I'm glad I got it in a dollar bundle to be honest. There's nothing left to do after you beat all 3 worlds. Also the music sucks.

The idea at the base of this game is simple but clever: Everything goes backwards!

As in all the classic side-scrolling platforms, the game is split in Worlds, each of them is made by some sub-levels.
Considering that everything goes backwards, you will start the story from the last level of the last world, “advancing” backward until you arrive at the start.
The uniqueness of this game is the upside-down approach to the level: you will have to revive the killed monsters and put back the gold coins you took without creating time paradoxs!
A nice thing is that the game menu is backward as well.

It’s not really difficult: Sometimes you will need the right timing to jump, but nothing too hard.

L'idea alla base di questo gioco è semplice ma geniale: tutto si svolge al contrario!

Come nei più classici platform a scorrimento laterale, il gioco è suddiviso in mondi, ognuno dei quali è composto da un numero variabile di livelli.
Considerando però che tutto si svolge al rovescio, affronterete la storia partendo dall'ultimo livello dell'ultimo mondo, avanzando mano a mano a ritroso nel tempo fino ad arrivare all'inizio.
La particolarità del gioco sta proprio nel dover affrontare ogni livello all'inverso: dovrete far tornare in vita i mostri uccisi e rimettere a posto i gettoni presi, stando attenti a non creare dei paradossi temporali!
Carino il fatto che anche il menù di gioco sia completamente al rovescio.

Non è particolarmente difficile: ogni tanto serve la giusta dose di tempismo per i salti, ma niente di veramente impegnativo.
L'ho trovato comunque originale, divertente e spiritoso.
Ottimo riempitivo per i tempi morti.

For a 2D Backward Side Scrolling Platformer where you play as a Chilli with a bucket on its head... I thought this sounds like my type of game. However, after playing it I am left a little disappointed and wanting more of it. With this said take a look at the Pro's and Con's I found below:

Pro's:

♦ Fun
♦ Good Concept (Work Backwards)
♦ Funny Characters and Enemies
♦ Great Sound
♦ Awesome Graphics
♦ Great Workshop Potential (Maps created in Level Editor can be put on Workshop)
♦ Simple Controls that just work (Only have to press 2 buttons)
♦ Cool looking Trading Cards
♦ Easy Achievements and 100%

Con's:

♦ Storyline seemed weird
♦ Way too short (Finished it 100% in 55 minutes can possibly be done in 50 or less)
♦ Not Challenging at all (Way too simple)
♦ If you buy Standard Edition you have to buy the whole game again just for the Bonus Content
♦ Bonus Content isn't a DLC Option (Should have been cheap DLC for what it is)
♦ Not much Workshop Content and the content isn't moderated (Only 25 levels and some are unfinishable Levels)
♦ Hardly any replay Value (Unless you want to beat your 10 second level time, which is pointless)
♦ Leaderboards don't work (Mine shows up as White, possibly because I didn't get a time on Speed Runner Mode. But with that said then why aren't the Leaderboards Global?)
♦ Can 100% the game without getting all Trading Card Drops

Overall, I'd recommend buying this game if you want something really short to 100%. You will have fun and enjoy the concept whilst it lasts but once you finish it there isn't much incentive to replay it unless you want to try and beat your level time of average 10 seconds or less. Don't get me wrong if you have the "Bonus Content" you can do the Speed Runner Mode which will take you a while to get gold in, but there is no achievement or incentive to do this and can get very repetitive and boring quickly. You can however create your own levels and play other user created levels via the Workshop but there is few actual working Workshop levels available. So, for what the game is and for the relatively miniscule content in the game, it is good. However, I wouldn't say it's worth the $8 for the full game and to pick this up really cheap if not free if possible.

PS: My total time to complete all worlds (World 1, 2, 3 and the Bonus World minus the Speed Runner World) was 18 minutes, so if that doesn't say how short the game is and how much content it's lacking than I don't know what will.

A fun platformer that isn't too long, it ends before it gets tedious.
Every level is the perfect lenght so it doesn't become overly frustrating.
Has replayablity for the people whom care about getting all achievements/want gold on every level.

Pricing is realistic for the lenght of the game, good to see some developers looking for balance in everything.

This game is really short, i took me less than an hour to 100%. The level design is simplistic and the difficulty is quite uneven. Most of the levels are extremely easy but some of them require a few retries because the hitboxes are terrible. Also, the paradox system is stupid, when you make a mistake you restart at the start of the level and you can't get gold on this try... but if you just go back to the level list menu you can start over the same way and get the gold so it doesn't really make sense to make you restart with this penalty.

Overall, the game is quite boring. Get it in a bundle or for really cheap, unfortunately I can't recommend it for the asked price.

Got this game in the current Groupees bundle, since it drops cards, that makes the game pretty much free. Its a very casual/mobile port platformer, with the gimmick being that it starts at the end and you run backwards to the beginning, unkilling enemies and uncollecting coins. The game is very short (30 mins to "unbeat" it), it took longer to farm the cards. In their defense, the devs have added a means for users to create levels.

Too short and very forgettable.
