Aperture Tag: The Paint Gun Testing Initiative

“If you're like me, when you played Portal 2, you covered every room in as much bouncy gel as possible. Well now it's a whole lot easier, and you can color coordinate the walls with orange gel.”

“A surprising and fresh revival of Portal 2’s familiar puzzle elements.”
Jeep Barnett

“It looks great, it plays well, and it lasts 2-3 hours, giving it good value for money.”

Can't complain
It is a brilliant and challenging mod, causing you to change your perspective than that of the game it is based on. Paired with being given it for free, I would recommend it to all who are not sure whether or not to buy it I tell you to make lemon grenades and buy it. Paired with it's soundtrack (included free) and for four quid its a bargain!

This game was highly enjoyable. Not worth an entire $10 but was still a great game. Well created and disigned maps and new content were engineered wonderfully. I highly recomend aperture tag.

I really enjoyed this mod. I'm a huge fan of Portal, Portal 2, and the original Tag game so this was right up my alley. While this game focuses little on the Portal mechanics, the Tag mechanics are quite enjoyable on their own. I found the puzzles to be interesting and the action sequences are fun.

The biggest problem I have with the mod is that it requires a lot of precision when executing certain sequences. For someone who isn't very skilled at twitch based gameplay, this was frustrating for me in a few places as I knew what to do, I just had execution problems. Of course the same could be said for certain parts of the Portal games. I think the most frustrating (and fun) part was the timed sequence. It was a bit unforgiving, but still a lot of fun.

Additionally the voice over acting and writing were fairly weak. To me this is a relatively minor issue though since I didn't buy the mod for the story.

I recommend it to people who like Portal 2 and/or physics based puzzle platformers.

Before buying this mod you should know that it is better for co-op rooms, not just solo campaign.

So you should have a friend with Aperture Tag ;) It is really much more fun with co-op, at least for me.

This was definitely interesting. I'll start off by saying I'd recommend the game at 30% off or better, as I got it for $4.89 and I feel that price was solid. The game left me wanting it to end faster, yet wanting more by the end.

The major problem is, the game is not "there", not polished and ideal. Voice acting left a lot to be desired. Honestly, I picked it up as a fan of Harry Callahan's music, and a fan of Portal. The music is pretty great, but attaching it to in-level speakers means the volume is very inconsistent. Gameplay has some neat elements, but I think being limited to just gels makes puzzles too limited. There were several times I thought "Was that the solution?" as the technique I used didn't seem intentional. Gameplay is not the thoughtful style of Portal, but far more platforming. At the same time, gel is far easier to apply everywhere, compared to limited portal placement options in the base game. This ability to coat most levels in gel enabled several boundary glitches and shortcuts. I was hoping for more interesting levels, as many were very flat in layout, where vertical challenges would've been nice. Workshop support does help to add more content, but that still doesn't add to the story. I feel like there must be more to the storyline, and I'd like for more content to be added.

A bit better story, stronger voice acting, and some level fixes would go a long way to make this game really appealing. Although the middle-section of the game made me wish it would wrap up faster, the ending left me begging for more. It's probably 4 hours long for most, putting 30% off as a good price-per-hour and enjoyment value. I'd like to see Valve show some stronger support for the mod, maybe connecting it to an ARG to show some information for Portal 3, but that's just a dream and a wish. But THAT would get me excited. For what is available here, it's decent enough as long as you accept that it won't have Valve's level of polish and quality.

Thanks to my friend for this mod, this is amazing! Thinking with gels is something not usual in portal. I mean, you actually spread the gel, which is kinda cool. Plus - amazing storyline and... two ends? (SPOILER). anyways, great mod!!!

Aperture Tag: Introducing a wonderful game mechanic

The backstory here seems to be set at some indeterminate time (presumably between the two games). You've been awoken from stasis by 'Nigel', who is going to test your use of the paint gun. The story is pretty ok, given that this is a mod. It does a good enough job of setting things up. However, personally, I don't think the story is too important here.

The concept of the paint gun is well thought out, based on one of the original concepts behind the portal 2 game. As far as its implementation, the paint doesn't actually come out of the gun, but just in front of it. A minor note, as once you get used to using it you stop looking at the paint coming out anyway.

I'm still not entirely sure I get the right concept behind the "paint enabling/disabling" fizzlers, but through trial and error I figured it out well enough to play properly.

The levels are well designed, offering a good range of puzzles. There is a very nice mix of old, modern and 'outside' style puzzles. A minor annoyance is the extended time it takes to travel between some of the test chambers through long pipes. The developers probably could have cut that out and not lost any value.

I played using the keyboard/mouse. It looks like it supports controllers, but it is first person, so I wouldn't bother trying a controller.

The graphics are mostly good. The new assets look very nice in this mod. The gun looks very nice. However, for some reason when I play assets involving 'glass' do not seem to render correctly all the time. Occasionally switching between tinted and fully transparent. This doesn't really give much cause for concern though.

The soundtrack to this is great. Partly done by Harry Callaghan, it captures the style of portal really well, while avoiding being too samey. Voice acting for Nigel was good too.

I completed the game in about 4 hours, so it's fairly short, but there are a lot of community-made maps, and a level creator, similar to the original portal 2 game, so there's a lot more levels to try after completion.

I found no game-breaking bugs in this mod, and there were only a few minor annoyances [like the glass rendering bug], and something seemed a bit off when I was modifying the key bindings in the menu, but that didn't affect gameplay.

This mod is great, and any fan of portal should definitely try it. The paint gun is a great addition. My only request with the mod is it could have done with a lot more of the fast-running parkour style levels.

This game was the best Portal mod I have ever played. I loved how you espcially got to use the paint gun! Though, there are bad and good things about the game including but not limited to...

-The paint gun made the game so much fun, especially if you liked using the gels from Portal 2
-They have a community workshop, so just like Portal 2, you can create your own maps and post them up to the workshop with new creation tools.
-The story line was actually pretty good, short, but fun! :)

Now the rest of my opinions on the game involve the cons section. There will be quite a bit here...
-The paint gun, like I said, made the tests way too easy
-The voice acting was terrible! No offense to the voice actor, but the voice for "Nigel", the new core, was really just aggravating in my opinion.
-Sometimes (atleast for me) when the repulsion gel is out and you stay on it for a certain amout of time you jump randomly.
-The paint gun in my opinion is fat and ugly (lol). I personally liked the paint gun from when this game was still on greenlight and the gun had a long tube in the front. (One of the trailers on the store page shows you the image of the old paint gun)
-Some chambers were outright dull and boring
-A majority of the chambers from the beginning of the game were way too brief. (Ex: [Spoilers] When Nigel says that this test chamber will be hard [beginning of game], it really wasn't. It was easy a brief)
-Sometimes when shooting the gels, they don't respond (Again, for example [Spoilers] when you escape the Aperture Science Labratories, there are fun obsticals that require you to be fast when using Propulsion and the repulsion gel, but when they don't respond quick enough for you to surpass, you... well die. Oh, and you have 50 seconds to escape c:)

That's about it. Though, the game had a lot of cons (in my opinion) and were just so boring at moments, it was still a fun game using the paint gun and all. And that's why I still recommend this game. Plus, remember you can post chambers you created on the workshop just like Portal 2!

As a mod developer myself, I'm reluctant to spend money on somebody else's mod since most are given out for free, but I'm glad that I took the time and a small amount of money to give this one a try. While it's not the best mod in the World, it is definitely very well made and a lot of hard work has clearly gone into it.

I don't understand why the mod has been getting as many negative reviews as of late, it isn't deserving of them, in my opinion at least. While I can agree that the mod is relatively easy to accomplish (most Portal veterans would agree) it is still somewhat challenging and brings quite a bit of fun to the table with some of the challenges that it sets out for you, particularly the "escaping" scene which was a lot of fun to do.
I agree that the voice acting isn't exactly the best but there is definitely much worse out there. The dialog is actually quite amusing and a lot of effort has clearly been put into it, so since the guy isn't exactly a professional actor, he should be cut some slack.

I recommend Aperture Tag to any Portal fans that are interested in trying it out. Don't expect it to be up to par with the Portal games themselves because it isn't, but it is still a fun experience and is worth the money.

I really like this game because it takes the Portal 'formula' and expands on it. There are a TON of high-speed action scenes, particularly the 'escape' puzzle. The only thing it doesn't do well is that it has no oculus rift support, though that would probably make me throw up. On my computer. Yuck.

Well, if you like Portal, Portal 2, you HAVE to play this game, the gel gun is a bit laggy, but, work very well, the game isn't too difficult, but provide much much much fun.

The soundtrack is amazing, the game has alternate endings and good character voices.

This game worth your money. :3

Eh, that's all there really is to it, the voice acting is okay at best, seems like someone is trying to do Wheatley but can't do it that well, this just felt like a poorly made add-on for Portal 2. Sorry if I seem a bit blunt but I regret paying $5 for this mod, I don't mind the free soundtrack that came with it, which is amazing with the Steam Music Player, but I digress. If this was free, I wouldn't mind it, but paying for this with only mediocre voice acting and a tease for a gel gun, it's not quite what I expected, but if you REALLY love Portal 2 gel and want to play around with it some more with a gun that shoots gel and not portals, and a custom map isn't good enough, then you might like this.

I hate to dump on this games especially as a big fan of the official Portal and Portal 2. But this mod, for which I paid, crashes often and is rather unintuitive. I urge people not to pay full price!

What would portal be like without portals? What would aperture science be like if you weren't the chosen one? The answer to both of these questions is: still pretty awesome. I enjoyed myself the entire way through this game, even with the frustrating bits, and the puzzles were a wonderful mix of fun, challenging, frustrating, and head-scratching.

Even if I thought the audio for Nigel sounded a little low-budget,I love the character. He's just a humble personality core whiling away his time in a tomb-like research facility-come-rube-goldberg contraption, and he's trying to keep himself occupied. So he decides to make use of all the odds and ends left lying around after GLaDOS blew up, so he decides to do what he was programmed to do: test. Only he hasn't quite gotten everything up and running 100% and you have to use the vacuum tubes, and not all the tests are connected to each other. . . Still. It stops him from getting lonely. He's got this endearing incompetence to him that reminds you of Wheatley only nowhere near as dumb, and he's got to follow the rules, sorry about that, but he's not as malicious as GLaDOS.

So the flavour of this is PERFECT, it hits every right note in the Aperture symphony. The psychotic disregard for safety, common sense, reality, scale, scope, proportion, practicality. . . The list goes on and on. The completely nonsensical nature of why it is you're doing what you're doing. I mean, you're pursuing a career in death defiance to test WHAT exactly? bouncy and speedy paint?

The ending is a surprise, but not in a bad way, just a subversion of expectations. Which is NICE once in a while, and it still fits with the flavour of all things portal. . . Kinda tastes like citranium actually.

This is a fun game, a fun MOD, considering the effort that has gone into it, it is definitely worth a few bucks.
