“A surprising and fresh revival of Portal 2’s familiar puzzle elements.”

“It looks great, it plays well, and it lasts 2-3 hours, giving it good value for money.”

This game is very fun, and im not just saying this because im a fan of portal games. It presents almost entirely new gameplay mechanics and a new perspective on multiplayer games, as the co-op requires the cooperation of 2 players and understanding of the games gel mechanics and gun along with the portal gun of the earlier games. The only promblem I've had is an occasional missing texture.

Aperture Tag: The game that recreates Portal 2 where, instead of portals being the main focus, you use gels.
The gels you can use at any given time are controlled by a new type of fizzler (Typically, green enables one or both gels, and purple disables both)

I suppose I should start with the story...
There is none. Aperture Tag does not have a specified timeline holder in the Portal universe, you are simply another test subject. However, you are not alone. Another personality core is introduced at the beginning of the game - Nigel. Unlike GLaDOS, Nigel doesn't have anything against you, and is more passive. He provides some speech between test chambers and instructions in other places, but that's about it.

The puzzles.
Most of the tests in the game have a decent design. All elements from Portal 2 make a comeback - Emancipation grids, excursion funnels, light bridges, even portals. Some tests, however, are either overly complicated or poorly created in a way that the gels can be exploited for shortcuts.

The escape.
When I first walked into the ALSSER room, I had no idea there was a 2nd door. I also did not know I would need to run anywhere, because I pressed one of the buttons before Nigel could even mention it. So for a good 30 seconds after I pushed the 2nd button, I was not aware of my objective at all, until I finally realized there was an opening that looked like it required propulsion gel. Even afterwards, the sequence requires some trial and error (Unless you just want to give up with that button). Most of the escape wasn't difficult at all, but on some occasions running up the long 45 degree angle wall, I lose momentum for no reason and can't make it to the next faith plate.

The ending. (It's an obvious reference to Portal, so I won't spoiler-censor it)
I walked into the last test, saw the elevated platform path line in the distance, and immediately knew what was going to happen. And hell, was I disappointed. However, an alternate ending exists where you can close the pit and instead be sent up an elevator to the surface... or so you'd think. Yeah, both endings are not only incredibly anti-climactic, but they result in your death. Just look at Portal Stories: Mel. The ending to that game is actually reasonable, but here it's just "Alright, that concludes the tests. Now testing protocol states that I have to kill you."

The verdict.
Aperture Tag is a decent game overall, if you have some spare money sitting in your Steam wallet and you're bored. The tests are unique, the solutions are clever, and honestly, who doesn't love coating the entire interior of a room with gel? The voice acting isn't terrible, but just one character is a little underwhelming. Personally, I'd wait until this game is on a discount to purchase. Even though the paint gun opens new possibilities, at the end of the day, I'd much rather be thinking with portals instead.

I got the game to see if it was worth the cash but to be honest, I'd rather spend the last 4 dollars from my birthday on Operation: Two Cities in tf2. The game isn't as fun as I thought it was and I was lucky enough to get a refund for it. The game just seems too slow for me and the early game was kinda dull. If it was free, I'd maybe look up to it as a mod that was in the right direction but not quite perfect.

It's a good mod, but it has some tricky timing/platforming parts, where you'll die many times over. If you only want puzzles, avoid this game. The game is not that long (3 hours) and the voice over isn't the best. Some of the solutions to the puzzles involve a novel idea, so that's cool.

Recommended if you want more after Portal 2 and Portal Stories: Mel, and if you're not allergic to timing and platforming.

Very impressive game, I like how its different from portal and instead of naming it "Portal" they just put "Aperture Tag" to fit the title since its not about portals, but its about gels.

In this game, you have to think with gels, rather than portals. You'll come across portals at some point, but not portal gun. You have a gel gun, and like portal you have to go through obstacles using it in order to progress. There is a certain action sequence that makes the game more intense, but you can always skip it if its too hard for you.

Really good game, but slightly disappointed no boss battle like in the portal games. But nonetheless, the alternate endings is good enough to make up for it. But I still wish theres a boss battle though.

Still, this game I recommend. Its good enough for that kind of price.

I feel like this coulda been better.

I loved the concept of it seeing the trailers a while back but the game itself seemed like it couldn't deliever. I do respect the devs behind the project but it could have just used a little more creativity with the gel component part of the game. I guess that's where the community maps come in and make up for those gaps.

As for Nigel, I couldn't really warm up to the character even if he was our protag or even antag. His character didn't seem really interesting but the voice acting wasn't too mediocre.

Really wished this was a bit longer and better executed but it was still a fun game while it lasted.

I was super excited when I leaned about this mod, but when I gave it a try, I wasnt very unimpressed. I completed about 15 puzzels in the hour of play time, and I spent way more time dumping goo on things than I did actually thinking about the puzzles. Not a single one was even slightly challangeing.

This Mod is not really portal. It's an obsticle course with lots of jumping and squirting gel.

OK, I decided to write a review about this game.
Aperture Tag is a Portal 2 mod, launched in 2014, which uitilizes a new mechanic, the Paint Gun.
This paint gun is such fun! I love to paint everything (this is the new mspaint.exe). BUT, devs, you do not know how to fully utilize the fun, because the logic is such a minor part. In the escape it was so frusturating to get out, and you think a video is a good solution for it? 1. its very hidden, 2. videos are not fun...
The aesthetics are so bad!!! your attention to detail just distracts me and I spent hours to find flaws with a lot of them in my hands, seriously, if you can map for csgo dont map for portal 2, portal 2 is more difficult.
AND HOW MUCH NODRAW I COULD FIND THERE? oh much nodraw, please "Draw" your game again, this incompetence is just so bad I don't know how you could've decided to make a mod like that.
the puzzles are BAD, how bad? Well, I think this whole mod is just an introduction to this gun, not an actual game. SERIOUSLY! I am just so bad in solving puzzles and this is just way too easy!
I do not want to hide the fact that, the voice acting, ahhh, terrible voice acting, you don't only lack skill developers, but your taste is also lacking, seriously! everyone is saying the voice acting is bad.
Story-wise, ahhh, not even a story, I understand this is a gamepla-driven game but there is no story at all, and GREAT! THE REGULAR ENDING IS THAT YOU DIE AT THE END!
Music's fine, I prefer Mel's better <3.
I spent 5$ dollars on it, please change it to -5$, I want money for playing this game.
Final score: 4/10

I did buy this game to play coop with a friend, and because the single player mechanics were cool ( i tought ) ... boy i was wrong. First of all this game does NOT have a coop mode , it's marked as coop because some users dropped some coop maps for this game in the workshop and so the dev decided to add the " coop " mark to it... shame. Second of all,the singleplayer is not difficult at all FOR THE TESTS THEMSELVES... in fact ,most of the time you'll be able to figure out the solution but you'll get bored of this game quickly because of how frustrating it is to get the timing right.... after finishing this game i can say that the soundtrack and the voice acting didn't bother me that much , but the fact that the dev re-used some PORTAL 2 singleplayer levels in this game ( i want to remind you that this is a mod and usually mods are FREE ) shows lazyness and the ending is really predictable and unoriginal. Portal :Mel stories and Thinking with time machines are free and are better than this ... stay away from this game until it gets to less than 1 euro/dollar , it's just not worth it , if you are a die-hard fan of the portal saga you might enjoy it like you might not.... it all depends in your thirstiness for new content.

The mod lacks polish in some very frustrating ways;
Dialogue needs work (writing, not necessarily audio)
Level design needed tweaking (might have suffered from the playtesters being too familiar with the solutions - ledges a little too far away, textures not lending to intuitive game flow/discovery, etc.)

I probably would have more to say if I bothered to play it longer, but I couldn't justify spending more time on a sub-par product.

I do not recommend spending money on this mod.

I get it, the creators really liked Portal and Half-Life series, but my god this game is so unpolished.

I managed to get out of bounds 6 times, completely skip 2 puzzles, and skip 4 complete sections in puzzles.

The only limiting factors i bumped into were artificial difficulty and the worst level design i have seen in an FPS puzzle recently.

+Soundtrack is great thought.

Edit: i have 6 hours played but 4 of them were AFK, i opened the game and left the room. 2.4 hours to beat the campaign

A unique type of mod from others in the Portal series, Aperture Tag forces you to put down your portal gun in exchange for a new type of handheld device capable of shooting the mobility gels which are featured in Portal 2. The few early puzzles I have solved are easy to figure out but difficult to execute due to the game's mechanics. Small but significant things such as the gun spraying gel lower than I aim, as well as extremely precise jumps which cause me to fall into acid on almost every attempt, essentially make the game an unplayable experience. I paid good money for this game and am so far impressed with its gameplay mechanics and story, but until I can complete a level without making a proper jump only to fall a few inches short of the platform I am supposed to land on, I won't be able to play and/or recommend this game.

I feel like the biggest complaint is that this is an average-quality mod with a price tag to it, as opposed to several mods of very high caliber without any dollar sign attached. I actually like Nigel's voice actor (as opposed to the other negative reviews). However, the ability to solve some puzzles in very unorthodox and unintended ways, 'fake' difficulty (timing and precision being off in the slightest can kill you in some puzzles), and the fact that you can break out of the map because the walls aren't high enough in some places are really unnappealing. Unlike most other single player mods, story is severely lacking in this one, only really banking on Nigel's quips and your paranoia that he might pull a GLADOS. The co-op tag is a total fluke, by the way. There's no co-op.

Update: Found the alternative ending. It isn't much different from the previous one, really, (assuming you follow the path they expect you to take) just a change of scenery. That little extra effort for nothing new.

First off, this is a great idea for a mod, but I believe that it wasn't executed properly. It focuses heavily on testing rather than the story, and the story isn't that good at all anyway. This mod needs more exposition. I bought it and I conclude that it should not be worth the $4.99, this mod should be free as there are other mods out there that are much better and are free. Its fun if you're looking for the mechanics at least. Everything else is lackluster.

Now i personal enjoyed the game because of its interesting new way to solve puzzels and it takes place in the best science facility in the world, aperture science (even better then Black Mesa)

cons:
-Not much of a storyline
-it costs yet there is better mods for portal 2 out their that won't cost you a sent
-its hard, REALLY HARD.
-you can only get ONE soda at the end :(
-there is no CAKE!!!

pros:
-interesting new way to solve puzzels
-steam workshop (not that many active users but there is still some stuff)
-good voice acting
-nigal makes a rude comment by saying: "you have the bladder of a pregant woman"

In all its a decent game but its still lacks things that other portal 2 mods have mastered. If you are a big portal fan like i am you'il probably like it and if your the 7 year old that bought portal and says "im the best at puzzels games i have portal 2" but never opened it, well it might be hard for you young boy so stick to minecraft.
