Space Run is a rather unique Tower Defense/Real-time strategy game where you place your towers on a ship travelling through space to fend off attackers from all directions. In Space Run assume the role of Buck Mann, a freelance Space runner who is now taking jobs for some of the biggest companies in the Universe dealing in anything from hazardous nuclear waste to VIP Space passengers.

+Nice graphics though aliasing looked a bit rough to me sometimes
+Well designed characters who all have interesting appearances
+Quite a lot of towers to unlock over the course of the game using points earned by completing missions, bonus points can be earnt by completing the missions within certain time limits which just requires putting more engines on your ship
+All towers have several upgrades which can be unlocked in the same way as the towers themselves can be unlocked
+Different ship layouts as well as a wide variety of enemies each with their own style of attack keeps you on your toes throughout the game
+This game relies heavily on your ability to effectively plan which is nice to see rather than it just being mindlessly placing towers all over the place, sadly some of the game's negative aspects really take away from this
+Despite not having much of a story the dialogue between characters is very good
+Excellent voice acting
+Some really funny lines
+Each mission is relatively short making a game or two a perfect time killer

+/-Figuring out where you should put your cargo on your ship can sometimes be very challenging especially when a number of different cargo towers have to be placed in close proximity to other towers, personally I found this to be rather irritating but some might see this as another interesting level of gameplay
+/-You start with a blank ship which has a different layout each time, I found this quite disappointing as I would have liked to have had one ship which I carried through the game upgrading it over the course of all the missions

-Weapon re-orientation (for the few weapons which can actually be re-oriented) is quite poor and the towers can only be placed at certain angles, combine this with vision cones which aren't very wide at all and placing and maintaining your weapons as well as making your ship combat effective quickly becomes very tedious
-No way to pause the gameplay without bringing up the menu so if you need to move things around on your ship during a battle you're probably going to take significant damage while doing so
-From what I have played so far unless you're a perfectionist who needs to get the best possible score on each mission this game hasn't got very much replayability but it does have around 20 hours worth of content so perhaps that isn't such a big issue
-Missions very quickly become very repetitive as they are all very similar apart from the order of enemies

Verdict:
7.5

An interesting twist on a classic genre with nice graphics and a lot of unlockables that has a couple of issues regarding gameplay but one I had fun with nonetheless.

El K.

Less of a "Tower Defense" and more of a "Point Defense" with a tactical twist. You build onto free hexes on your ship, as you fly towards your goal, and try to defend yourself and your cargo from a constant barrage of enemies. Competently amusing story-dialogues, and genuinely exciting bossfights spice it up rather nicely.

The challenge is derived from the way the game forces you to split your considerations while managing a limited budget: You must choose between weapons, defenses, engines, and other specific needs based on the "client" you are running the mission for. Focusing on firepower is easy enough, but youll lose speed and get a lower score, which limits your tech-tree advancement. Focusing on speed will get you killed. Choosing the right pieces, at the right times, is vital to getting the best outcome. This becomes more difficult as the game advances, because larger/more-advanced constructions require various levels of power, and because components must be built adjacent to each other in certain ways to function.

If I had to complain about anything in this game, it would be that there is no "free-play" or "random" mode. Only the campaign exists, and there is no variance within said campaign. Once you have played all of the levels once, all there is to do is to go back and play them each again, and try to get a higher score. The game ended, for me, before I was ready to put it away, and I was sad to see that no expansions or DLC exist to get more playtime out of it.

But, to say that a game was good enough that it left me wanting more is a compliment in its own right. Definitely worth the price at 15 dollars, and maybe worth more.

Quality finish but becomes frustrating quickly and offers no incentives to continue. Not the best casual game.

As nicely as the visuals are done, the core mechanic of managing every object every second of every run distracts you from them and gets really old really fast. The mid-onwards levels especially have nothing fun about them: every mission feels like a white-knuckle tweaking rush, not something you can just get into every now and then and have some fun with. Maybe it's because I aim for full stars every run, but still. You do unlock items and grind credits to buy them, but that's where the reward system ends - and on many runs you can't even utilise the advanced stuff because the basic cannons will still be your best option! The game just seems poorly designed in the later parts, it does not flow or play well.

I bought the game because I liked the idea and the voiceacting and dialogue, but there is no plot to carry the latter and the "idea" was not what I thought it was. I wanted to build ships, not obsessively micromanage them, and I was hoping for some fun times, not this extreme timing challenge stuff. Note: you do not "build" a ship so much as get shoved onto a pre-formed platform that you can slap parts onto by grinding credits during a run.

If you want to challenge yourself with a glorified mobile game then this is for you - but why would you do that? For me it was not fun after the start and hence not what I wanted. An afternoon's fun was not worth the asking price; I wish there had been a demo (and next time I will "borrow a demo" before I buy this stuff).

Appealing game indeed. Visuals are pretty good. It requires to react quickly and precisely to get top score. Though, there's a drawback - because ship's space is very limited, there aren't so many options to build modules. In most cases I used offensive ones 'cause defenses are not so helpful to bring foes down and they're space-consuming. I certainly do recommend to try this game.
