After my second hour of play the game feels more in-depth, where it was feeling a little softball at first. I'm actually really starting to enjoy this game and have decided to raise my rating to 8.5/10.

I first heard about this game on NPR a couple years ago during a program talking about video games as expressions of art. I eventually found this game on Steam and wishlisted it. Now here, a couple years after first hearing about, I finally got it when it went on sale for the first time ever on Steam. Got it at 75% off. My first impressions of the game, after playing it for about an hour with a Steam controller, are positive. The music is beautiful. The environment is enchanting. The gameplay has been doing its level best to keep me going. The story is intriguing enough. I'll need to spend more time with it, but so far I think I'll give it a 7.5/10 and recommend it for folks looking to pick good games up during a sale. Cheers.

The environments run on and look the same, and there's hardly any challenge. This is a metroidvania in that you explore a 2D open world. But it's so damn boring and the narration and writing are bland.

I just finish the game and can say its a good game. Not a great one, but a good one. I think they can still polish this game, if they decide to give a sequel. I really enjoy the enviroment and the exploration in this game. I know about the mods and I haven´t try it yet, but i think is amazing the fact that they let the player to create a new enviroment to explore after completing Aquaria. I really recommend this game

I really want to like this game and recommend it, but there are just too many frustrations.

The biggest issue for me is the control scheme. At first, the keyboard + mouse setup seems both interesting and novel. You can control the direction of your swim independently from aiming your weapon. In addition, you can context switch to 'singing' to generate a shield or switch forms. When it gets to crunch time, though, the control scheme feels like it is working against you. Boss battles require precise, quick movements, which prove incredibly difficult.

The artwork in the game is very well done. The range of colors and the use of light and dark give each zone a different feel. This is one area with no reservations: Aquaria is a beautiful game. It will remind players who cut their teeth on the SEGA Genesis of Ecco the Dolphin.

The game world itself is enormous. This would be a good thing if it weren't also so barren. Much of the game world consists of loops and twisting off shoots that lead to nothing. There's no reason to explore some of the areas except to learn that nothing exists there. Worse, the player is given virtually no direction, so you'll spend much of the game simply mindlessly wandering around, hoping to find the next area that will allow you to progress. Zones typically have at least one and sometimes multiple save points, but finding them can be a chore.

There are a broad variety of enemies, but their attacks boil down to two forms: homing missiles and rush. Each area is populated with enemies that make sense for the zone, but you'll quickly find that if you just stay in energy form and creep forward you will kill the enemies without too much trouble. This lulls you into a sense that the game lacks challenge of any kind. Then you get to a boss fight.

Boss fights are extreme tests of your ability to rapidly change forms and accurately move, target, and react. This is a monstrous departure from the rest of the game where you can spend most of your time in one of two forms (energy or beast). Boss fights are typically preceded by a save point, so you don't have to retrace your steps, but you'll get very tired of seeing the (laughable) death scene.

The game includes a crafting system for creating food from recipes. This is a great way to power up against bosses, but also feels out of place with the theme of the game. You are playing this mer-person attempting to discover their past, and as you fight for justice you pull the eggs from your enemies, gut fish, and other myriad atrocities against your fellow water folk. There's even a recipe for making sharkfin soup! The disconnect is even more jarring when you are in a boss fight, get low on health, and then pause the game to 'cook' a variety of foods to restore health and power up. I can just imagine the boss accepting you plea for a time out so you can roll some sushi and boil hot soup. Finding materials for these recipes is a chore. You'll occassionally run across a plant that you can sing to that will then burst into materials like green leaves or spicy fish meat(!?). Sometimes a new item will appear and you will instantly know the recipe for it. Outside of these locations, you'll need to kill enemies and hope they drop what you need. There's a limit of holding 8 of any particular crafting item, but you'll likely never see that limit hit, as drop rates are terribly low.

I originally purchased this game in 2011. At that time, I played it for a few hours, but quickly became both confused as to what I should be doing next and bored with the mindless exploration. I didn't feel as though I was making any progress and moved on to other, more exciting options. Flash forward to 2016 and with new Steam Controller in hand I thought I would return to the game. The Steam Controller is ideal here! The ability to easily dash out a song on the touch pad feels very intuitive. I explored a bit more, then read the in game manual and found that you can double click the mini-map to get a world map. This made a huge difference in focusing my wandering around towards specific goals. I picked up a few new songs, recipes, and defeated a few bosses. There are some spoilers ahead, so you can skip the rest of this paragraph if you like. Then I came to the mother/father fight. This fight requires that you quickly switch between beast and energy form, with no indication that you should be doing this. In addition, switching forms leaves you open to attack as, at least as far as I'm aware, there's no fast form switching from the controller. After watching a few videos on how the fight is done I finally managed to complete it. In fact, I made my way to the final boss fight, and here is where I finally threw in the towel. I don't have the full complement of health increases, nor do I have the full list of recipes nor mats. I lacking a few forms, and while I am able to finish off the first form of the Creator, I don't see myself moving beyond that point. I watched a video of the Creator fight to completion, and that sealed it. That fight is ridiculous, and I have no desire to go farm all of the materials I think might be necessary to succeed at it.

Given all of these issues, I can't recommend the game.

I loved the world, the story, the atmosphere, the music..pretty much everything. Although i find there would be some room for improvement on the minimap, as i found it sometimes confusing how the parts overlap. The gameplay is decent, there are some flaws in the controls but it works just fine after getting used to it.
Overall I'd definitely recommend it!

I wanted to love this game, but to hell with it. It was rich in ideas, but the execution is so poor that it can't be recommended.

It fails to live up to its potential from the moment you get to the first temple. The singing mechanic could be cool if going back into the form you need to do that wasn't a guaranteed opening for the millions of enemies with homing attacks to beat the hell out of you. It's fun swimming around at first, but then the game starts asking for very precise movements out of player inputs that have always amounted to launching the character in a direction and hoping for the best. Giving the character different forms to tackle the hazards in the environment is basically pointless since anything other than energy form (which gives you a ranged attack) leaves you essentially helpless. The huge open world is exciting until you realize that the fast-travel system had a mind of its own and you can't directly select your destination. And enemies constantly respawn. And you have very limited access to healing. Basically the open world is just a way for you to lose health before the absolutely ridiculous boss fights.

The boss fights in this game are not "dificult." They are frustrating. You can't learn their patterns because there aren't any. Their projectiles are almost always homing, so good luck not taking stupid damage during one of your mandatory form switches during the battle. Oh, and keep a walkthrough handy to tell you how to actually beat these things. Does it look like they're taking damage from your blasts? Changing color like how boss monsters to in video games? Sometimes they aren't actually taking damage! Be sure to have at least two strategy guides nearby.

Think I'm being melodramatic? How do you feel about being close to killing a boss - a boss that has the power to launch you around the stage and take any control of your movement and placement in the environment WHICH ALSO HAS SPIKES EVERYWHERE - only for it to throw you out of the stage. You can take the long walk back to the room and finish him off, right? NOPE. Boss fight starts all over again except now you're completely out of healing items since you used them the first time! You had no input in whether or not you get launched out of the stage. This is just a thing that happens sometimes. There are no health items to pick up along the way back. And the tunnel to the boss is covered in spikes. Spikes which you can get bounced between and die from without being able to change into the form whose ONLY PURPOSE is to protect you from spikes.

I'm done with this game. It could have been so good, and that's what hurts. Even if there is a way to get good at the clunky movement, the imprecise aiming of your only weapon, and grind out enough healing items to simply brute force your way through a boss's health bar, it still might launch you out a window and make you start over. I only have one life to live, and I'm not wasting any more precious hours on Acquaria.

A classic from the early indie era, before things like steam greenlight and twitch made it way easier for indies to put themselves on the map. I bought the first humble indie bundle for this and world of goo. This game starts a little slow, but the beautiful artwork and music, the awesome atmosphere, an enormous world to explore, and the metroid meets ecco the dolphin gameplay are all superb. A few of the puzzles felt a little overly obscure, and sent me looking for a walkthrough, but overall, the game is just fantastic. If you enjoy the metroidvania genre, definitely get this.

Great little metroidvania (but underwater!), full of surprisingly fresh design and great worldbuilding and attention to detail, but marred by unexplainably bad design choices. In this review I'm focusing on the negatives(which I feel haven't been emphasized enough), because the positives have already been described in good details by damn near everyone else.

- Gamepad support is abysmal. Truly, unexplainably abysmal. Menu controls are awkward (and plain don't work in the map screen) and there are no 'look' keys and no form-changing shortcuts (which makes several fights a LOT harder than they should be). The worst part is that the movement on the keyboard is equally bad, so your best bet is to play it on a gamepad and have the keyboard real close to tap the form keys as needed.
- Gimmicky boss designs, especially for some of the optional bosses. The octopus is a particularly annoying offender.
- Save points are sparse, especially in the early game, and always feel like they're slightly too far from the minibosses, which are almost universally harder than the story bosses and likely to take you more than one go.
- Most of the puzzles can be cracked with a little thought and feel quite intuitive, but one in particular on the second-to-last dungeon is a complete ♥♥♥.
- Achievement completion pretty much requires guide usage, as two achievements are linked to a hidden, unmarked room in a corner that no one in their right mind would try to poke.
- True ending ends in an obvious sequel hook that will never be covered, as the studio's dissolved.

Aside from all of these picked nits (some of which not so nitty), it's still a gorgeous game, with a great soundtrack, rewarding exploration and cute little touches here and there. Very much recommended, just be ready to deal with some eventual ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥t.

I just finish the game and can say its a good game. Not a great one, but a good one. I think they can still polish this game, if they decide to give a sequel. Aquaria è considerato, a ragione, uno dei progetti indie più interessanti e non c’è da meravigliarsi se si tiene conto che dietro questo lavoro ci sono: Alec Holowka (codice e musica) e Derek Yu (grafica e design) nomi che, chi segue l’ambiente, sicuramente conosce.
Essenzialmente è un Metroidvania con una bella mappona da girare dove fare cose e conoscere gente.
Il primo impatto è molto New Age, la protagonista non possiede nessun tipo di attacco ed interagisce con il mondo cantando, questo amplifica la componente esplorativa e relazionale: Piante, animali, cunicoli sono elementi fantastici con i quali interagire.
Peccato che tutto questo duri poco visto che ucciso il primo bestio acquisiremo la canonica capacità di sparare, per fortuna però il sottositema di cucina, i vari canti e le forme acquisite da Naija renderanno l’avventura sempre varia e lo sparacchiamento a testa bassa non verrà quasi mai premiato.
La grafica è d’eccellenza, l’audio ha invece alti e bassi.

Gioco complessivamente ottimo ; a livello di gameplay è praticamente una fusione tra i titoli di Megaman e Metroid (per lo più quelli relativi al GBA) con , però , una maggiore liberta di movimento nell ambiente e di conseguenza un ambientazione piu grande varia e divertente da esplorare .
Quest'ultima caratteristica è però un arma a doppio taglio poichè nelle prime fasi del gioco l'ambientazione risulta troppo grande e complessa e questo potrebbe rallentare di molto l'avanzamento del giocatore nella storia .
Dal punto di vista tecnico la grafica è mediocre ma ciò non da molto fastidio mentre invece le animazioni sono peggio che pessime e questo rende abbastanza sgradevoli le " cutscenes " ; il doppiaggio è ben fatto e la fisica non da problemi una volta compresi i meccanismi di movimento , funzionamento delle forme , e salto sul muro .
Infine la trama , essa non risulta bella o iintrigante fin dall'inizio ma man mano si procede nella storia appassiona sempre di più e inoltre esplorando si possono avere delle " informazioni bonus " sotto forma di flash back .
Il finale non è del tutto scontato , punto ovviamente a favore , purtroppo gli sviluppatori hanno scelto di mettere un finale in sospeso poichè prevedevano di rilasciare un secondo titolo che avrebbe concluso del tutto la storia di Naija e chiarito gli ultimi misteri il quale molto probailmente non uscirà mai per mancanza di fondi e vendite del primo capitolo relativamente basse.

Aquaria è un gioco favoloso. Lo comprai nel loro store originale e lo giocai fuori da steam, ora a distanza di tempo lo rigioco volentieri. L' atmosferica e le musiche sono bellissime, il personaggio e il gameplay molto originali. Nonostante gli anni la grafica è ancora incantevole. Un capolavoro adatto a tutti. Consigliato, pura poesia.

Incredible, atmospheric experience and a work of art.

from the design standpoint Aquaria is a Metroidvania 2D game with big underwater world to explore. Those ideas aren't that special on paper, but the strange mix of climactic locations, fitting music and hand-drawn graphics makes this title not only joy to look and hear, but makes so much impact on the player that after you finish the game you will know that is one of the best indie games out there yet to be recognized by most of gaming community.

The story is simple, but it is told extremely well by the voice of the main protagonist as you play the game. It starts out interesting, but it ends up strongly heart-touching. The plot is slowly revealed through the game and the next surprise around the corner will be bigger than the former. Also, in my opinion, Naija is one of the best written female characters in video game industry up to date.

Aquaria is an open world and you must figure out most of the gameplay mechanics all by yourself. Some tactics for beating some bosses are kind of tricky, so this isn't the game for people that are not so fond of the more exploration-oriented games. The start of this game isn't as fast as you would want to, but if you will give it some time you will be hooked straight to the finish. Game is around 12-20 hours long and there are lots of non-mandatory things to find. This is not a small game by any means.

Aquaria had a bad luck that it came before the Braid's indie games boom. Don't miss this one. It's a powerful gem hidden in the sea.

Short Verdict: Wow. Aquaria is a stunningly beautiful metroidvania indie game published back in 2007, but it's still a pearl! I literally dove into it from the moment I started and I really had a blast. I'm very thankful to Jaws for not only trading it with me, but also for recommending it. If you like metroidvanias, indie games and pretty 2D graphics, don't miss this one for nothing! Oh, make sure you play it with a controller, since it's a lot better (except menus, which are easier to navigate with a mouse).

Pros:
Oh, where to start....
  • Very interesting mechanic, where you can transform into different forms, each with its specialty and abilities that unlock more and more of the world
  • A HUGE world for you to explore and swim around
  • Has a great, deep story that pushes you to keep going
  • Lots of treasures, costumes, energy boosts, pets, songs, ingredients and food recipes for you to collect
  • I think it's safe to say that its difficulty level is absolutely perfect--not insanely hard, but don't be fooled by the cute graphics, this game is not a walk in the park either
  • Very interesting boss fights--while they depend on your skills, they're first and foremost puzzles
  • Being able to fill the map with customizable markers is not only a great feature, but also necessary if you want to master the game without looking (too much on) FAQs
  • Absolutely gorgeous 2D graphics
  • Awesome BGM with many different great tracks
  • Great voice acting, even if you compare it to mainstream games
  • If you're into it, there are even some interesting mods, mainly Sacrifice (a story-driven prequel) and Labyrinth (a small sequel focused on, you guessed, a labyrinth map)

Cons:
  • Aquaria's world is so huge it might take a lot of time when you have to backtrack to explore old areas after acquiring new forms/abilities. There are travel turtles that carry you around (also seahorses you can ride for faster shorter movements), but I think there could've been at least twice as much turtles for a world that size. Also, being able to choose your destiny instead of having to cycle through them would be great. I didn't have to use them a lot, but it was kind of boring when I had.
  • Controls for when you're out of the water are a bit too clumsy for me. Of course they should be a bit clumsy, since you're supposed to live in the water, but they could've been better.

Bought on / for: I actually traded for another bundle key/link I had. But this game is definitely worth its full price!

A relic from an era of £15 Indie titles that your average gamer would never seek out because they were usually hidden away on the developers home page without much aplomb.

Unfortunately this title and many others like it are left in the dusty past, forgotten, unloved. Give it a go and you'll be rewarded with a charming little foray into an aquatic wonderland the likes of which haven't been seen since the clicks and whistles of Ecco the Dolphin dazzled you on the Dreamcast.
