One of my favorite games from 2014, and probably my all time favorite detective game is this. Crimes and Punishment is a blast to play! The new engine offers breathtaking views and stunning textures, and the voice acting is fantastic. You have to make moral choices in this game, which affects the story.

The cases are much more interesting in this game then the previous Sherlock games, thanks to great mission variation. Solve murders, investigate thefts and missing people. "Will you follow the law or your moral?", is the question you have to go by on every case.

Every case is smart and well thought out. You always think you understand who did the crime, until it suddenly turns the other way around. When you finally complete a case you feel satisfied though. You will look around for a long time, just because you want to find every clue. If you get stuck you can get hints, look in your journal and ask doctor Watson.

I think this game is very underrated. It's one of the most polished games released in 2014 and offers a great story with absolutely fantastic cases. If you haven't picked this game up yet, please consider doing it. I really hope Frogware will release more content for this game. DLC, expansion or sequel, because I adore the game and would really wish for more great and exciting cases to solve.

Crimes and Punishment gets a warm recommendation from me.

Sherlock Holmes: Crimes and Punishments is a game that consists of 6 playable mysterious cases of the world famous detective.

Gameplay 8.5 of 10
The game captures the feel of the Victorian London quite well, the whole environment design is really detailed, including tapestry, pictures on the wall, clothes and manner of speaking. You collect pieces of evidence and use Sherlock Holmes power of deduction to come to a reasonable conclusion and uncover the truth. But be aware, can come to the right conclusion? Or are you going to verdict an innocent man? Sometimes you know quite fast who did the crime, but how can you prove it? Use all of your senses. Smell , vision and hearing and if you can't find the conclusion yourself , you can get help from Sherlock Holmes dog Toby and sometimes you can also switch characters ,so you can play as Watson. You can also reenact some crimes in your mind to see if the witness’s statements are conclusive.

Graphics 8 of 10
The graphics are really good, you can even see dust particles in the air. The unreal engine really did do some good for the game. Especially the faces, when you interrogating the witness. You almost can’t tell they are game characters. They look so real.

Sound 8 of 10
There is slight background music, a little mellow, but fitting the scenery perfect and sometimes it's adding suspense. The voice acting is top notch. The English actors are truly good and really make you feel like you are in England at that time.

I played some of the other Sherlock Holmes games and this feels like it could be one of my favorites. So I would definitely recommend it to every adventure gamer who likes a good story and engaging puzzles.Every for gamers who are just starting out , this is a good way to start into adventures and point-and-click games.

How did I wait until 2015 to play a Sherlock Holmes game? I picked this up on the Steam winter sale and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I haven't played the previous games in the series so my only references are other games, but this one in particular is very close to what Telltale does. There are six cases, each roughly two or three hours in length.

If you like adventure games of either the point and click variety or Telltale's modern franchises, this is an easy recommendation.

The game is visually stunning and manages to capture the atmosphere of late 19th century London and the surrounds extraordinarily well.

The visuals themselves are most definitely the greatest part of the game, and as a series of sequences of eye-candy the game tends to work rather well.

Where the game falls down is the actual gameplay, however. It is rather fun initially to run around sniffing out clues and talking to people, however this becomes repetitive rather quickly. There's very little available to actually challenge the player, as it's more or less a point-and-click to find the clues then these clues simply describe and fit themselves into the overall puzzle.

There were an entire range of different aspects that I would have rather focused on in each of the cases if it was a more free-world kind of game, however the game simply guides you towards conclusions. As a mental exercise the game is therefore practically worthless, which is a pity considering it is about one of the more intellectually gifted characters of the modern world.

The inability of the player to actually go wrong anywhere except in the final conclusion does rather reduce the level of reward the game can offer.

As a relaxing little piece of visuals flitting across your screen the game works well. However at $40 the price is rather steep. I would price the value of this game at about $15-$25, depending on what you're looking for. If you're more interested in nice visuals and atmospheric gameplay then you might be willing to fork out a bit.

If you're more interested in strong gameplay and a mental challenge rather pick up one of Paradox Intereactive's games for half the price, wait for this to go on sale (like, 50%-75%), or play a game of chess.

As someone who has played many Sherlock Holmes games, I was delighted by the updated interface, and puzzles. While not perfect ( a few graphics glitches) it is quite the improvement from earlier releases.

Pros
- New puzzle styles offer different ways of arriving at conclusions
- Deduction board allows you to come to wrong conclusions
- Special skills allow you to "see" the world as Sherlock Holmes does
- Moral choice at the end of each case to see how you want to handle things

Cons:
- Loading time can be excruciating, but they do allow you to review your casebook and deduction board which helps to mitigate the pain
- Price is a bit steep, so I waited until the game was on sale
