Glory to Arstotzka

The communist state of Arstotzka has just ended a 6-year war with neighboring Kolechia and reclaimed its rightful half of the border town, Grestin. Your job as immigration inspector is to control the flow of people entering the Arstotzkan side of Grestin from Kolechia. Among the throngs of immigrants and visitors looking for work are hidden smugglers, spies, and terrorists. Using only the documents provided by travelers and the Ministry of Admission's primitive inspect, search, and fingerprint systems you must decide who can enter Arstotzka and who will be turned away or arrested.

「Papers, Please

Welcome to Arstotzka, a country that has recently opened its border after a war with Kolechia and thanks to the labor lottery, you are the newest immigration inspector in this tumultuous region. Bluntly stated, 'Papers, Please' is a job simulator that has you checking for discrepancies between information. You'll look over permits, IDs and passports. Reading to what the people say vs what is in the information. After you look over everything, you will either approve or deny them. If you find anything questionable, you can have the game check for dependencies, by clicking on two specific things, such as their photo doesn't match their face and then ask them about it. Later in the game, you will unlock things such as searching people and finger printing them.

Each day will have a new issue that you need to check for. Another layer that you look for. The game first starts out by only letting your own citizens back into your country. Then opening the borders to everyone with a ticket, then people need a permit, then a work permit for those working and an ID for your own citizens. You'll see the issuing city that you'll need to check your rulebook to see if its really an issuing city, a gender that you'll get to search their gender even if it looks like a woman, they could be a man, detain people with contraband, question identities and fingerprint them, look at the date of entry vs the expiration date of their passport, look at when their work permit says they'll leave vs how long they told you they'll be in the country vs what they told you. Eventually, forgeries will happen that will force you to see correct official seals are there. It is a lot of information you need to look over.

The major controls are just mouse clicks and drags. You have a rulebook that you can click and drag onto your desk. All information you are given from people needs to be click and dragged into your work desk to look over. Then approving or denying requires you to click to take out your stampers, then move the passport into place and click the approve or deny, then give everything back to the person, by clicking and dragging it back to them. Once you've approved or denied them, then its time to click the speaker to call up the next person in line. Its a very click heavy game, but as time goes on you can purchase booth upgrades that lets you click space or tab to call up things you'd normally just click and drag.

Each person that you process earns you $5. If you make mistakes and approve or deny someone that you shouldn't you will receive no penalty the first two or three times. After that, you start losing $5. Why does money matter? You have 4 people at home with you, your wife, your son, your mother in law and your uncle. You spend money on rent, heat, food and medicine. If you don't have enough money you have to start sacrificing things. If you don't have heat, your family will start getting sick and need medicine. If you don't have food, eventually your family will die. When your family dies its game over. You need to be both thorough and efficient in the game, because you only have so much time in a day. Some days get stopped short with unavoidable terrorist attacks and bombings that cause new rules such as searching every Kolechian.

There are other game over states, like doing something incorrect in front of the wrong person. If you get a game over, you can restart from any previous day. This makes the game pretty forgiving.

As the days go on, a stories will unfold and you'll be responsible for the course of mini stories. You'll meet interesting characters such as diplomats, soldiers with bribes, inspectors, angry people cursing you out, human trafficers, secret agents, mysterious men.

In all, this is a very unique game if not job simulator with a good story, good art style and music that matches the game and back story. I can understand if this game isn't for everyone, but if you can get into it, Papers, Please will keep your attention in a lot of ways. Once you get endless mode unlocked, you have 3 categories: timed, perfect and endless complete with leader boards.

These things seem obvious to anyone who has lived in a post-soviet country, but apparently Americans are shocked by this game. Very good indie game, though it's more of a story actually. It's hard to imagine, but processing papers can get boring at times, I know.

Nevertheless the creator has done a fantastic job. The effect on me wasn't as strong because I've actually seen it first hand in places like Ukraine.

Papers, Please is an indie game developed by Lucas Pope, in which you play an immigration inspector whom is working at a border checkpoint in a country named Arstotzka . The goal of the player is to inspect documents using a set of tools and in some occasions to inspect the individual per se, in order to keep criminals out of the country . Everything is a bit unknown, until it will be disclosed , the more you play .

Every work day, you receive a document with informations about particular things you have to notice about, the arrival of important people and/or if you have to take some measures if a specific occasion happens, like having to do body scanning to all civilians who belong to the country of Kolechia . We also have a rule book all the time, so we can know what is allowed in the documents we inspect and if there are any discrepancys, you have to reject the entry to the person and later on, if you want, arrest them . A situation with a spy, terrorists and smugglers with not be uncommon, and you will decide if you will let them pass, because you can bribed and even threaten .
After a day of work, you receive a wage, which depends on how well you did your job, and you will have to decide where your wage will go, some option include 'food', 'medicine' and 'heat', also as you progress in the story you will be able to choose to move to a better house, but it will also have bigger expenses . You also have freedom of will in basically everything since the game changes with your decisions .
Be careful too, this game will play your emotion and will play mind games with you, sometimes you must choose between doing your job or doing the right thing sometimes, there will be families slip apart because of you, but if you decide to let someone passe the border without the correct documents so he or she can be with her/his family, you will face the consequences . Your gaming experience with this game could end in 20 different ways, each occur depending on what decisions did you take in a certain way because you actually have a lot of choices throughout the story, some of them may include, being part of a conspiration group named EZIC against the government of Arstotzka, accepting bribes and even saving money on medicine or food, which will let to the starvation of members of your family .

This game is worth all your attention, since its incredibly addicting, has a great plot and the gameplay its really original, you will not regret it .

Glory To Arstotzka!

...Wow.

This is like rapid-fire Phoenix Wright. You have to check dozens of immigrants for contradictions in their paperwork, and determine whether they’re accepted or rejected. You’re paid (poorly) for however many passports you stamp correctly. If you don’t perform well, your family will die of sickness or starvation, or you’ll get arrested for going into debt. (Yes, going into debt is illegal now.)

But it’s a game that’s less about how well you check papers, and more about why you’re checking papers. You won’t get very far before the story starts getting really complicated, and you’ve got to start making some tough ethical decisions. Are you a true patriotic Arstotzkan, willing to uphold the law to the letter? Are you only in it for your family, willing to take juicy bribes from illegal smugglers? Or are you willing to help the shadow cult overthrow the Arstotzkan government?

This game files in the face of everyone who’s ever said that story and gameplay can’t be the same thing. It really makes you feel like you’re shaping the fate of a nation, or succumbing to it, just by sitting in a booth and deciding who gets across the border.

Sooo it was a normal day at work in Arstotzka. I was denying passports like a boss. Then a woman came to the counter. "Papers, please." I said. The woman gave me her papers and I looked for anything that wasn't right. I see that "Sex" says "M" instead of "F". I told the woman and was about to put a "DENIED" stamp on her passport, when she confirms that it is indeed correct. To avoid any complications, I did a search. "Face the scanner", I told her. Then the pictures came through. She had a ♥♥♥♥♥.

That was the weirdest "APPROVED" stamp I had ever given.

This is the most gripping bureaucracy simulation game I can possibly imagine. I've never played anything like it. It's so simple and so elegant, and it still manages to have one of the most compelling non-traditional narratives I've experienced.

Do I reccommend this game? Yes, you should definitely experience first-hand what it is like to be a public servant.

It's not really a video game, and I wouldn't expect too much fun. Unless you have a morbid sense of humour. Basically you'll be pouring over the ever growing list of rules, and ever expanding amounts of data to match and confirm.

You are a lowly beaurocrat, working border security. Your job is to verify citizens entering your country, ensure their papers are up to date, correctly labelled and legitimate. Enjoy hours of pouring over dates of births, genders and checking to make sure the region they're from actually does exist. Experience the meaningful wages and human interactions that public servants typically face every god damn day.

As someone who worked in public service I found it very easy to put my morals aside and focus only on the job, because as a public servant you must accept that the rules are there and you must obey them regardless of the scenario. I would call the experience depressing.

Do buy Dehumanization: The Game.

An incredibly enjoyable little game, with endless choices to make that effect the world you live in, viewed through the morning newspaper. There are many small touches that add immersiveness to the game such as the buttons labeled "walk to work" and "sleep" as opposed to "next level" and "exit current level".
The number of excellent indie games like this that get ignored ruthlessly because they aren't from a huge company, or have insanely life like graphics is stupidly high. This game should not be ignored like this, it adds tension and panic to a seemingly dull job. Very well done, Lucas Pope.

In Papers Please you play the role as an unnamed immigration inspector trying to provide enough money for his family. The game sounds very simple and boring - You stamp either Denied or Approved on an immigrants passport but this title is so much more! The game also values your morals, for example there is a women who wants to go live with here husband in Arstotzka but does not have all the requried papers to pass the strict border control however if she goes back to her home country she will be killed! What to you do? Save another humans life but run the risk of losing your paycheck and making your family go hungry or deny her permisson to enter, can you live knowing that you have destroyed hundreds of lives?
