If what you crave is oldschool grid-based 3D movement combined with turn-based combat, don't look any further - it won't get any better than this. But if you do not like these two basic features of the game (or even just one of them), you really should keep away. You've been warned.

"Legacy" harkens back to the Might & Magic games of old - and with this I don't mean Might & Magic 6/7, but rather M&M 3 "Isles of Terra" and M&M 4/5 "World of Xeen". You can still buy those from GoG, but the once stunning VGA graphics are real hard to endure nowadays, so it's a blessing that Might & Magic X exists. While the graphics here aren't exactly top notch, they are still very beautiful and atmospheric. (Almost) everything else is like it was in those old games: A deep turnbased combat system at its core, a big upper world to roam freely with your party of four (plus two hirelings), towns, dungeons, inns, merchants, quests, riddles - the whole shebang. In this, "Legacy" has much much more to offer than, say, "Legends of Grimrock II".

Given all the above, there are only two real downsides to the game: The first is that it is unfortunately technically unoptimized. This becomes noticeable to the user in the wide upper world, where there's sometimes hitching while you move your party a tile - even with the most advanced GPUs in town. This is strange as the game really shouldn't be very demanding at all (the only reason that could explain this is that the engine seems to rely more on your CPU power than on your GPU). This does detract from the oldschool RPG fun only slightly, however.

Well, and the second downside is of course Uplay. I once swore I would never buy another Ubisoft game from steam again until they got rid of this utterly useless and annoying additional DRM-scheme, but when I broke my vow and reinstalled it (just for this game), I noticed that it at least became much more unobtrusive compared to how I rember it from a few years ago (when I played "Farcry 3" for a while). Also retrieval of the long forgotten password for my account was no problem.

If I had to give "Might & Magic X - Legacy" a score, it would be 8/10 for fans of grid-based RPGs with turn-based combat. I would have given 9/10 if the game were optimized. The last missing point is because I really miss some features from the old games, namely: sorcerer guilds and banks that give interest on deposited money. Also, while the story always played second fiddle in M&M games and the narrative we are presented here is ok, I liked some of the storylines of earlier installments better. A nice touch, though, is that (if you are perceptive) the great "sci-fi setting" twist of "Might & Magic 3, Isles of Terra" is at least alluded to in "Legacy" too.

I would not have bought if if I knew it needed to be connected online to play it. Thats right. Its a single player game that requires you to be connected to its ♥♥♥♥♥♥ uplay service to play it. Oh, and u play goes down often. Ill recommend the game if it ever comes up and allows me to play it.

Good game overall. One of the best "blobbers" released in the last few years.

+ Good combat system for the subgenre.
+ Can be challenging at times (on the higher difficuly level) but not frustrating
+ Stable, runs good (after the latest patch), interface is adequate.

- Somewht poor in party customization options departament. There are too few races/professions.
- The itemization is poor. Mostly diablo-like generic items with one prefix and one suffix.
- The publisher service "thing" that you need to subscribe to and then log each time you play - in this single-player game as if Steam wasn't enough.

My final verdict: Liked it despite its flaws. Score: 7 out of 10.

Ok, I am a big Might & Magic fan and have played MIght & Magic since the beginning back on a Commodore 64 with Might & Magic 1 & 2. I can say that prior to this game Might & Magic VI was the best version that I had come across and when this game came out in that style and for the Mac I was absolutely estatic and had to get the game.

Pro's: Has the same feel as the MIght & Magic VI style of play. Pretty badass game to that extent.
Con's: This is a major con. The game as far as I can see does not respawn. So when you finish a map, you literally finish a map. Yes, you can travel through the map itself to get to another part but have no way to develop a more powerful character. You are basically limited to the level that the game is setup for. This gives control to the gameplay to keep it complicated for the customers, but it takes out the randomness of the game, which once you realize that, the game seriously loses its appeal. I literally went back to Might & Magic VI by downloading Crossover and the PC version on my Mac to play the game. It plays flawlessly but Might & Magic X just does not compare to VI.

They were so close yet unless they change that part of the game, I would have to give this a thumbs down :(

What I like:
- It has a nice difficulty level.
- Nostalgia successfully evoked for people who played classics such as Lands of Lore or Eye of the Beholder.
- Fights and character builds require some strategy.
- You can make notes on the ingame map. For example, you can write there "spells" next to a shop where you can do that, or "axe" at a spot where you can level up a characters axe skill.
- Some replayability possible. The puzzles and enemies will be the same, but you can build a different party of different classes and thus attempt to beat the game with a different setup, using the higher of the two available difficulty modes.
- Some of the puzzles and riddles are fun.

What I dislike:
- Ubisoft. That means you have to deal with Ubisofts Uplay nonsense, bad support, DRM and whatnot.
- The game is sometimes a bit sparse in matters of telling you where to do what. Without researching sometimes on the internet where to do what, you might get frustrated.
- I had one annoying bug so far.
- Sometimes, every couple of hours, it crashes. Since it saves automatically ever now and then and has a quicksave option, this is bearable though.
- The graphics are mixed. They're not good, but some models and parts of the dungeons look nice. Other parts, especially outdoor textures, look very bad if you get closed.

Neutral:
- Some of the game mechanics make sense gameplaywise but are highly illogical. For example, the buffs on your party (like one that protects you from damage) last a certain number of turns (during combat) or moves. But you can, for example, rest for 8 hours to regenerate your party, and those buffs are all still up. Sometimes you can also rest for 8 hours before a boss fight, and the boss will just wait until you're done.
- In some of those old RPGs I liked that the positioning of the party mattered (melee fighters in the front, ranged fighters and spell casters in the back). In this game, the positioning is irrelevant.
- The difficulty is not increasing in an entirely linear way. You will encounter enemies you can't beat at that point. On the other hand, the game saves automatically all the time, so you just reload and ignore that part for the time being.

So, all in all, if you like those retro-RPGs, this one is ok. It's not great, but is entertaining enough. 25 Euro is a bit expensive in my opinion, but for 15 Euro or less, like during a Steam Sale, I can easily recommend it, as far as you don't buy it randomly but realized that you get a retro style RPG instead of a new Witcher or Elder Scrolls. Well, and you have to be aware that there are still a couple of bugs in the game.
