Little updates that some of you might really appreciate. Let me introduce to you guys the Pause function! Show us some screenshots of your best paused moment!

  • Client
    • Added over the code from core for the UnscaledDeltaTime for the StateMachines.This code will have to be pulled up soon in the core
    • Added pause menu, as in the current master, to release
    • Added The Void at the bottom of the map to eat any falling objects out of existance
    • Fixed #1464 by cleaning the static detectives and also properly fixes the issue with leaking arrows fixed in 06e95b939.
    • Fixed bricktrons being deleted breaking existing survival behaviours.
    • Fixed NullReferenceException in Fleche.AppliquerPhysiques.
    • Fixed Pause
    • Fixed save thumbnails while paused
    • Fixed screenshots while paused
    • Fixed to get thumbnails to work in pause
    • Fixes issues #1448. We now let the save code handle file management.
    • Upgrade of the core to add the UnscaledDeltaTime for the State machines

Note that unfortunately we had to revert a fix on a memory leak with audio in the last minute, so this one will come in the next update.

Castle Story is a creative voxel-based strategy game in which you can build castles one brick at a time using an army of little characters called Bricktrons.

Your goal will be to explore a vast landscape full of mysteries and dangers, and defend your castle against onslaughts of hostile creatures and possibly other players.

The world of Castle Story takes place on flying islands, high above an infinite ocean. The islands are made of voxels, cubes made of various elements, which means you can dig, carve and build anything you can imagine in the landscape. Digging underground to gather resources, stacking bricks on top of each other to build a wall or even tunnelling through a mountain is all possible and even necessary to keep your Bricktrons safe.

Carefully designing your castle not only requires creativity and imagination, but thanks to pathfinding AI and physics simulations, Castle Story has layers of strategy and depth on top of an otherwise free-form sandbox experience.

Castle Story will be released for Windows & Mac (with possible Linux support once Unity4 is released).

Key Features


  • Build any structure you can imagine! Using 2x1 blocks, create structures that are not only good-looking, but also functional. Your Bricktrons need to be able to navigate your castle to build it and to keep the monsters out!
  • Physics! Watch a tower crumble to the ground realistically when its foundations can no longer support it. The entire world obeys to the laws of physics which means that you need to build cleverly so your castle can withstand attacks from projectiles and explosives.
  • Sandbox! Build a huge sprawling fortress, a single impenetrable bunker or a network of underground tunnels. The choice is yours. Castle Story rewards imagination and ingenuity.
  • Strategy! Command your Bricktrons as they build your castle brick by brick. Manage the way they work, what resources they gather, and the places they explore. Use your resources to build weapons and armor for your Bricktrons and all kinds of upgrades for your castle.
  • Combat! Using shields, swords, bows and lots more, your Bricktrons can defend themselves against the hostile creatures inhabiting the world of Castle Story. Lead your Bricktrons through tough fights, and use your wits to gain an advantage. You can even build catapults to rain destruction on your foes!
  • Magic! The world of Castle Story is permeated with all kinds of magic. Discover resources with magical auras and learn to mix them to create effects. Explore strange places and find mysterious artifacts left behind by unknown civilizations.

I am a Kickstarter backer so I have been following the development of the game for about 1,5 years.

This ride started great, these guys had an awasome concept, gameplay movies to show and so I backed their project. They were supposed to deliver the beta in October 2012; now we are in Early Access and still in early prototype. But the real problem is the lack of information about the development process; dev. dairies are void of any solid info; they are just about bugfixes and trivial stuff; t-shirts, save/load game functions, technical mumbo jumbo.. We don't know where this game is going; no real direction or roadmap presented by devs. There is talk of a roadmap though; for many, many months if I remember correctly. I suspect they have not known what to do with their game since the beginning. I just can't explain the lack of any solid info about the game/roadmap/direction in any other way.

Since the first prototype of the game, over a year ago, devs have added a really, really broken survival mode to the game, a multiplayer mode which doesn't work, a few bugfixes here and there; nothing else.

Game has a lot of potential, a great concept but the execution is just plain bad; UI is horrible, there are no real updates, no content added in over a year since first release.

I do not recommend the game at this point. At this rate devs working on the game; come back in a year or two and maybe, maybe you might be looking at a good game. Otherwise just stay away for now.

About the game itself:
It's sandbox building game. You have minions doing various tasks like mining, cutting down trees and providing you with building materials on the map you choose; well you have just one map at the moment so no choosing. You issue orders to your minions to gather materials and then you go ahead and lay down blueprints for your minions and they build them.

In Survival mode; you have baddies on top of normal sandbox mode. But they have no AI so they just rush at you. Get an archer or two at a high place and you win. Baddies won't be able to climb more than 2 blocks high and it takes too much time to destroy the blocks; your archers will kill everyone while baddies are hacking away at the blocks.

Problems;
UI is horrible. unimaginative and clunky.

Camera controls are plain bad.

There are still problems with laying down blueprints for constructions. Pathfinding is broken, AI is broken; blueprints for big buildings are very problematic; your minions just can't build them due to pathfinding errors.
Especially big blueprints will give you a headache; you will have to zoom in, out, rotate the camera this way and that just to be able to lay down a blueprint. Misclick? Tough luck; some blueprints blocks just don't wanna be removed so you will end up dropping that building and start another blueprint.

Many times you will have to start a map over and over again to get minions to spawn at all; you will just start with no minions.

There is a catapult in the game with which you can hurl barrels filled with stones or explosive stones to baddies. Very clunky to use; you will end up not using it at all. You don't want to use explosive barrels too; you will just destroy your buildings with it.

No content added as of now. You just build aimlessly in the map. There aren't enough building blocks.

There aren't enough info about the game mechanics; how do you build that bridge for example? You will have to find some YouTube video by a fellow player to show you that.
Why can't you just put that block over there? Because you can't. And no one tells you why not.

The game is currently not worth buying but the devs are trying to fix all the problems. Keep an eye on this game but don't buy it yet.

4 Months without an update. May be worth the wait, but so far it was a big disapointment. Developers don't care much about anyone's opinion, don't reply to e-mails on their website, I recommend keeping away for a while.

Fraud and Lies
OK I know that the mods are keeping a tight leash on the forums here and they are shutting down everything that is pointing out the truth so I am going lash out and hope that a few people see this before it gets locked or myself banned like many others have before.

There are a lot of Early Access games on steam. Most of them have a capable and dedicated development team behind them. We all know this, we are all playing their games. We know what to expect from Alphas, Betas, Early Access etc etc. And this isn't it. This game has changed very very little for more than a year now. And they are still taking peoples money for it.

The people that originally backed this game are for the most part gone - they check in every few months hoping that something has changed but it hasn't. At this stage the only people that are happy with this game are those that have recently bought it in the last couple of months and don't know that a patch isn't 'just around the corner', and those that are friends with the devs who jump on every negative review and defend it with the usual "Alpha", "Early Access", or "refactoring" excuses.

We aren't stupid. We have played plenty of Early Access games before. They all need to be refactored a couple of times during their development as the scope of the interest in the game increases. All the early access games we are playing are doing the same. Castle Story is NOT unique in this.

The devs just use refactoring as an excuse for having not produced anything notable for more than a year. This is rubbish. They have accumulated near enough to a million dollars to work on this project and all they do is stall.

I know there are a lot of others out there that are just as fed up with this rubbish, and I hope it serves as a lesson to everyone to be very careful as to what they back with Early Access games. There a plenty of good ones out the with dedicated developers, but there are also a few rotten eggs.

I'd like to hear from everyone that has been through the same ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥e and all those that were banned for speaking out about this, but I know they probably have given up on this game plus anyway it won't be long before this thread is locked down and removed anyway. I feel sorry for everyone that wasted their money - I had hoped for something special too.
