Update: Version 0.5.1

Hello everybody!

First of all thank you very much for the feedback you gave us on the update 0.5. Your suggestions and reports are greatly appreciated by all the members of the team in addition to allowing us to continue to improve Castle Story. The next months promises to be particularly exciting for us as we approach the release date and we hope that it's an enthusiasm that you also share. Your support ensures that we can continue our work on the game and for this we are extremely grateful.

Thanks to your reports we have been able to identify some bugs for which we now offer fixes in patch 0.5.1.


We introduced the multiplayer mode back into Castle Story with version 0.5. Unfortunately, some of you had difficulties login in or were simply unable play with your friends. Other issues could also be encountered. Since we released the last update, we've been hard at work on fixing the multiplayers issues. We are now introducing a bunch of fixes which ensure that most of these problems are now resolved. It's a new mode so if you're having problems, don't hesitate to let us know on our forums.

  • In the quarry task you can now choose on which side the stairs will appear with the handle system.
  • 3 difficulty levels of are now available in survival mode (easy, normal and hard).
  • Sandbox survival is now enable in the settings submenu (normal difficulty level).
  • Improved wood texture quality.
Bug fixes
  • Tweaked the timer of the merge back to 2 minutes instead of 30 second.
  • Fixed an issue with the Bricktron that they were passing through the terrain if you place a brick on their head.
  • Fixed an issue where the toggle for the options of the stockpiles was toggling on the release of the Right-Click even if you did Left-click on it to activate/deactivate it.
  • Fixed an issue with the Bricktron passing through the terrain if they were going down one voxel and that voxel get destroyed right before they start the animation of going down.
  • Fixed an issue where it was impossible to destroy Catapult/Stockpile/Barrel/Lantern with the Anti-Blueprint.
  • Fixed an issue where the Bricktron was passing through the terrain when they were doing the get-up animation(At certain time).
  • Fixed the invisible resources on stockpiles.
  • Fixed a visual bug when Bricktrons were switching planks and logs.
  • Fixed an issue where the Corruptron was not throwing any rocks.
  • Fixed the scrollbar in the resolution menu while being in-game.
  • Fixed the indestructible bricks issue around your crystal.
  • Fixed multiples issues with Linux.
Known Issues
  • If you're saving your game while a Bricktron is flailing, it will break that save.
  • There are visual problems in the terrain for Mac, Linux and Windows10, but they can be fixed in the main menu options by setting Terrain Acceleration to never.
  • In Linux, if all your Bricktrons are named Bricktron (Clone), reinstall the game. This is an issue with Steam’s content servers.
  • In multiplayer, Quarries and Tunnels tend to cause de-syncs. Survival Mines however are stable.
  • There are lag spikes every so often.
  • A huge landscape project will cause lag.
  • It is currently not possible to split a construction task.
  • Due the the big amount of changes since 0.4.0, the save upgrader doesn’t always properly convert old saves.

Castle Story is a creative voxel-based strategy game in which you can build castles one brick at a time using an army of little characters called Bricktrons.

Your goal will be to explore a vast landscape full of mysteries and dangers, and defend your castle against onslaughts of hostile creatures and possibly other players.

The world of Castle Story takes place on flying islands, high above an infinite ocean. The islands are made of voxels, cubes made of various elements, which means you can dig, carve and build anything you can imagine in the landscape. Digging underground to gather resources, stacking bricks on top of each other to build a wall or even tunnelling through a mountain is all possible and even necessary to keep your Bricktrons safe.

Carefully designing your castle not only requires creativity and imagination, but thanks to pathfinding AI and physics simulations, Castle Story has layers of strategy and depth on top of an otherwise free-form sandbox experience.

Castle Story will be released for Windows & Mac (with possible Linux support once Unity4 is released).

Key Features

  • Build any structure you can imagine! Using 2x1 blocks, create structures that are not only good-looking, but also functional. Your Bricktrons need to be able to navigate your castle to build it and to keep the monsters out!
  • Physics! Watch a tower crumble to the ground realistically when its foundations can no longer support it. The entire world obeys to the laws of physics which means that you need to build cleverly so your castle can withstand attacks from projectiles and explosives.
  • Sandbox! Build a huge sprawling fortress, a single impenetrable bunker or a network of underground tunnels. The choice is yours. Castle Story rewards imagination and ingenuity.
  • Strategy! Command your Bricktrons as they build your castle brick by brick. Manage the way they work, what resources they gather, and the places they explore. Use your resources to build weapons and armor for your Bricktrons and all kinds of upgrades for your castle.
  • Combat! Using shields, swords, bows and lots more, your Bricktrons can defend themselves against the hostile creatures inhabiting the world of Castle Story. Lead your Bricktrons through tough fights, and use your wits to gain an advantage. You can even build catapults to rain destruction on your foes!
  • Magic! The world of Castle Story is permeated with all kinds of magic. Discover resources with magical auras and learn to mix them to create effects. Explore strange places and find mysterious artifacts left behind by unknown civilizations.

I was an original Kickstarter backer from about 3-years ago. I was very disappointed in the development of new content prior to steam and for the past year I hadn't paid much attention to Castle Story until I happen to notice that 0.5 was released and appears to incorporate some new content. I figured it had probably been a year or more since I last checked in so I'd give it another go.

Upon booting up the game, I noticed there were some new maps which made me think perhaps maybe they had finally gotten their act together and started producing content.

I started off chopping down some trees so I had a place to stockpile resources. I had remembered from a year ago when I last played that they came up with a horrible horrible user interface. News flash, it's still there and it's my opinion that they somehow managed to make it even more complicated. I simply, without a doubt, absolutely hate the interface they've come up with.

After creating a few dozen zones to allow my minions to place resources, I decided to start doing some mining to collect rock/stone as well. I sent off four of the five minion to work on the side of a hill while my remaining unit cleaned up the rest of the trees and made some barrels for later.

About 10 minutes later, all my miners went stupid and were just standing there. I moved them away from the hill, then assigned them to mining the hill again, which they happily did until 5 minutes later when they went stupid and forgot what they were supposed to be doing again.

I instructed the minion away from the hill again, lets them regroup and sent them back to mining the hill again. After 5 minutes, brain dead again. Apparently the game still has some very serious pathing issues that have yet to be resolved.

Right click, delete local content.

I guess I’ll check back in a few years when 0.6 comes out.

Castle Story was a fun concept tied around a modestly appealing, simplistic art style. And before anybody locks to this review for being negetive, let me explain. I don't dislike this game, but it's simply under-developed and shows very little ammounts of progress. The cons far out way the pros, but I will be more than happy to change this review once it finishes. (IF it finishes.)

-Voxel system
-Cool graphical style
-It's like if Minecraft was simplified and made into an RTS

-The AI is dreadfuly stupid
-Path finding is about as bad as you could get without the bots standing completely still (which they will often do)
-Optimization? This game, even on the lowest graphical settings, will at random, draw to a halt. Freezing and stuttering like your computer is a toaster
-Lots of bugs, unresponsive AI, can't cut down a tree without it tumbling off the side of the map into oblivion, ect
-It's like if Minecraft was simplified and made into an RTS

I really do wanna see this game get further along, but such a slow development process is leaving me with little hope it'll ever get out of early access. (Although multiplayer was finally added in recently.) I won't hold my breath for this game.

TL:DR early access at its finest. 4/10

(PS: Could be a good 5-6 as is were the AI not so bad.)
(PPS: To the developer: Please work on this. It's a great concept, and shouldn't be left to die.)

I really want this game to work, I really do!! It has been in a halt for such a long time now that the user has lost it's temper.. And I don't blame them.. Laggy gameplay after a while, really bad path finding, AI goes into halt, etc...
For a long time now - really small updates have been happening in the game, so small that it has actually annoyed the user more than it has satisfied them. But the developers have finally done something right. Every friday, there is a livestream on twitch, where we see them working on the game in different aspects. Error testing the game, modeling upcoming objects and writing and correcting their code. This tells me that they haven't abandoned the game.
I can see the potential in the game, when it's fully optimized and the mechanics are fully formed.
There's nothing quite like Castle Story in the market. Some like building, others see exploration, and what I see, is minecraft meets age of empires.

This game has had many new improvemts as of late. one improvement is the game actually being playable. another is multiplayer (finally) well overall it has really improved so i think everyone should at least give it a go

I love this game. It's a total work in progress, but once you get past all the bugs and get into the fun of building and learning how to work the game, this game rocks. The last update makes it all work together much better.
