Castle Story Update 0.3.0

With Version 0.3.0 comes an important shift in Castle Story’s development. Three of the most important systems were completely rewritten, and will now be much much easier to upgrade with new gameplay features. References from one system to the other were isolated to allow independent development of each core. Along with this redesign come important performance upgrades that will ensure that the game is scalable. This means bigger worlds, more characters on-screen, and higher graphical fidelity, while generally running smoother than before.

However, the changes will be incremental. Release 0.3.0 will be default version. We will keep the Legacy version available until the new systems are at parity with the old ones. A chance to try the new systems will be available within the New Game menu. Please keep in mind that these are currently work in progress.

In this update we’re introducing a new version of our voxel engine that has been re-built from the ground up. The main difference at this point is that we’ve decoupled the voxel drawing and terrain rendering from the game voxel data making re-draws much more efficient. The new voxel engine also leverages the GPU for reading and writing terrain data, making terrain re-draw cost next to nothing in some cases.

To ensure feature parity, and less backward compatibility issues, the new engine imitate what the old engine did as much as possible until we’ve cleared the public testing phase. However in this update, you will see:
  • A new island taking up the full extent of our 1km² canvas, with little impact to performance.
  • A huge performance boost to regular medium sized islands.
  • A smaller memory footprint for the game in general as well as smaller save game files.
  • Smooth island undersides, saving tons of triangles from being rendered.
  • Dynamic LOD (Level Of Detail) rendering, making the terrain much more lightweight when viewed from far away.
In this update, we rewrote the AI system from scratch, and bundled it with a completely new animation system. The new AI is faster, is not affected by inconsistent FPS and is much easier to upgrade for us developers. The AI is still in its prototype phase, and we included a preview in a special sandbox mode.

Note that the old bricktron is still used in Survival and regular Sandbox mode until the new AI is at feature parity with the old one.

In this update, the new Bricktron are able to:
  • Move using a much more fluid, animation-based locomotion system.
  • Use a smarter construction-order algorithm that should ensure less traffic jams happen.
  • Have much more accurate animation events for sounds and special effects.
  • A more balanced CPU budgeting and co-routine management system, ensuring that lots of Bricktrons thinking at the same time don’t slow down your computer.
Graphics Update
During the long refactoring period, we had time to do a lot of research into our asset production pipeline, most notably taking control of shading and lighting methods, which by default in unity are difficult to work with. The result is assets that are easier to produce, with higher fidelity textures and shaders that respond accurately to day and night lighting. We’ve made a switch to HDR lighting with Linear color-space, resulting in a much smoother look in-game.

We’re also creating and upgrading our tools to create new terrain texture atlases. This improves drastically the speed at which we can create and integrate terrain textures and will eventually lead to new terrain types.

In this update, you may notice:
  • Almost all objects in the game are now re-modeled, and re-textured with normal maps;
  • All shaders are now custom authored, to respond to our specific needs;
  • A much more detailed and prettier skybox;
  • New terrain textures with normal maps;
  • New Bricktron character models;
  • New versions of bricks and wood, with a brand new blueprint shader;
  • Objects that glow accurately, including torches, the sun and ambient reflections;
Other updates
  • We have re-built our blueprint system, allowing for parts of the pathfinding calculations to be done passively by blueprints and dynamic objects. This saves tons of calculations for the Bricktrons.
  • Better picking (i.e. character selection, and terrain clicks) management. This allow us to introduce smarter blueprint placement and radial menu choices.
Bug fixes and improvements
The following changes are meant to address issues related to “Legacy” features. This means they apply to “pre-refactoring”gameplay elements and code, and only to features that did not become deprecated by the new systems.
  • Fixed an issue where the camera in the tutorial doesn't start at the right place and you don't have any Bricktrons.
  • Fixed an issue that occurs when a Bricktron dies and his soul is absorbed by the Crystal, all the Bricktron you will spawn after will have the same name.
  • Bricktrons can now find rubble with pathfinding .
  • Fixed an issue where a catapult can use fire even if you didn't set the target beforehand.
  • Fixed and issue when you remove the last resource on a Stockpile, the image of that resource stay there
  • Fixed an issue when even with the "Mute all Sounds" checked, you still hear the Bricktrons when they pick-up resources and things like that.
  • Fixed a bug where sounds continue to trigger behind your other window in the Main Menu
  • Fixed the music (in the main menu) stops when you come back from the tutorial
  • Updated Brix.Core. Reseau now supports IPs as well as DNS hostnames.
  • You now cannot put stockpiles through lanterns.
  • Loose blocks are now accessible by corners to prevent Bricktrons from kicking logs when trying to pick them up.
  • Now allowing 4 characters for email suffixes.
  • Allowing any characters for the username when logging in.
  • Big performance improvement because blueprint properties were calculated too often.
  • Fixes loading issues for new games in survival.
  • Fixed a loading bug of the tutorial scene.
  • Added new combat music.
  • Added inertia in environment sound parameters.
  • Stopped the generation of meshes for dynamic object blueprints (blocks still generate their meshes)
  • Fixed an issue where after loading a game twice without restarting the client makes the game would lag more.
  • Fixed a quick-save issue. We now let the save code handle file management.
  • Fixed an audio bug for flying catapult projectiles.
  • Big optimisation of RAM for the audio.
  • Put the music in streaming instead of RAM.
  • Added a collision plane at the bottom of the map to eat any falling objects out of existence.

Om detta spel

Castle Story is a creative voxel-based strategy game in which you can build castles one brick at a time using an army of little characters called Bricktrons.

Your goal will be to explore a vast landscape full of mysteries and dangers, and defend your castle against onslaughts of hostile creatures and possibly other players.

The world of Castle Story takes place on flying islands, high above an infinite ocean. The islands are made of voxels, cubes made of various elements, which means you can dig, carve and build anything you can imagine in the landscape. Digging underground to gather resources, stacking bricks on top of each other to build a wall or even tunnelling through a mountain is all possible and even necessary to keep your Bricktrons safe.

Carefully designing your castle not only requires creativity and imagination, but thanks to pathfinding AI and physics simulations, Castle Story has layers of strategy and depth on top of an otherwise free-form sandbox experience.

Castle Story will be released for Windows & Mac (with possible Linux support once Unity4 is released).

Key Features

  • Build any structure you can imagine! Using 2x1 blocks, create structures that are not only good-looking, but also functional. Your Bricktrons need to be able to navigate your castle to build it and to keep the monsters out!
  • Physics! Watch a tower crumble to the ground realistically when its foundations can no longer support it. The entire world obeys to the laws of physics which means that you need to build cleverly so your castle can withstand attacks from projectiles and explosives.
  • Sandbox! Build a huge sprawling fortress, a single impenetrable bunker or a network of underground tunnels. The choice is yours. Castle Story rewards imagination and ingenuity.
  • Strategy! Command your Bricktrons as they build your castle brick by brick. Manage the way they work, what resources they gather, and the places they explore. Use your resources to build weapons and armor for your Bricktrons and all kinds of upgrades for your castle.
  • Combat! Using shields, swords, bows and lots more, your Bricktrons can defend themselves against the hostile creatures inhabiting the world of Castle Story. Lead your Bricktrons through tough fights, and use your wits to gain an advantage. You can even build catapults to rain destruction on your foes!
  • Magic! The world of Castle Story is permeated with all kinds of magic. Discover resources with magical auras and learn to mix them to create effects. Explore strange places and find mysterious artifacts left behind by unknown civilizations.

Castle Story is a "choose your own adventure" with one possible outcome: The developer continues to offer excuses for years as to why they are incapable of finishing their damn game, your money is wasted and you feel a burning sense of shame come over you for funding yet another failed early access title, the end.

This game cost me $20 USD or so, and gave me 113 hours of enjoyment. That's over five hours of play per dollar -- certainly more than I've gotten out of some AAA titles that cost me three times that much. It was a fun little game.

So why the thumbs down? Well, because despite being a somewhat *fun* game, it's not a *complete* game. And at this point it is not clear to me that the game will EVER be complete.

The devs posted this disclaimer long ago: stating the features that work and those that are planned. The disclaimer is pretty accurate, it doesn't lie about what's working and what's not. The problem is that the "what's working" list has not grown by a single item since I bought the game -- litterally the ONLY feature of any note that has been added was a pause function -- which would have been greatly appreciated if I hadn't worn out the gameplay many months ago -- but they haven't made any visible progress towards that complete feature set they said they were planning.

Some of this is understandable. It's a young studio, this is their first game and the developers are less experienced than those on a lot of other games. They made some early mistakes and had to refactor the code base, which took a long time. Normally, refactoring (while frustrating for end users because it consumes time with no new features) is useful because it reduces future bugs and makes implementing new features later much easier. But these things only matter if you RELEASE UPDATES after the refactoring.

As I said, this is the studio's first game, and as you can see it's not going super well. It's entirely possible that they are out of money and about to go bankrupt for all I know. So it's impossible to say when or even if this game will get another update, or if a hypothetical update would even contain any significant improvements.

So while it really boils down to the typical early access mantra of "Only pay for it if you are happy with the CURRENT state of the game", and while the current state of the game WAS worth the money I paid for it, I can't really recommend this game because I know that most people are less easy to please than I am, and want a finished product. This game may never be that.

With over 48 Hours put into this game, I feel like they should change the description to this:

Give us your money! Enjoy Castle Story, the monumental project where you control emotionless yellow blobs, watch as they toil away gathering sticks and bricks for endless minutes of slave labor fun! Get psyched as they bring your very own castle to life with broken physics brick by brick!
Introducing such features as:
- Broken AI, your children will have hours of enjoyment watching these blobs get stuck and hault productivity.
- Pause Button, stop all the action so you can wait even longer!
- Torches, make your fortress the center of attention with awesome lighting props!
- Blobs with Hats! Love Team Fortress 2? Join in the fun with epic patch updates like hats!
- Watch your blobs defend against equally broken AI enemies!

Tired of constantly updating your game? NO PROBLEM!! You have our solumn Sauropod guarantee that we won't be cluttering up your download list any time soon.

BUT WAIT THERE'S MORE!! ... wait ... no, no there really isn't.
Seriously...blobs with hats, and torches...that's the extent of this not recommend purchasing ever.

Utterly unplayable. There's been little to no progress since its Early Access release and I only wish there was some way to make them accountable and force them to return the money made on the sales of their product. This game is nothing short of a con.

How many early-access games have been abandonded? Towns? Spacebase? Castle Story? I'm sure there are tons more. I HATE how steam allows them to be sold still. My patience and willingness to support for early games has been used up. I wish there was a way to get my money back for those crap titles!!!

Unfinished vaporware. They have been working on it for over 2 years and have been unable to produce a product as promised in the kickstarter. Content today has not changed significantly from the game showcased 2 years ago.

To the developers:
Have a look at doing short development sprints to fix/update content every 6 weeks or so and then stick to that schedule.
You are currently working on a big bang approach, it will not work. There is a reason why software development is moving towards more modern iterative processes.
Communicate with your community, if you actually produce something, it will not be a hard thing to do.

The low productivity is unfortunately all to clear.

Castle Story:

Positives: I really interesting and fun concept. Some outlets for creativity. Has great potential as a game.

Negatives: It seems development is heavily stalled. Even for early access, updates are coming along slowly and the developers are extremely slow rolling out updates. Updates are pretty solid but more of the core gameplay mechanics need to be revealed to be fleshed out by the EA people. There is nothing to discuss between players on the game because the game hasnt received any significant changes in well over a year, except for their rebuilding of the game engine.

I would honestly hold on this game and come back in 6 months. My Current recommendation is No. I dont see the same promise I saw when I bought this game well over a year ago.

I highly advise against buying this game!!!! The developers don't ever update the game and they never fix the glitches and bugs (which are plentiful). The A.I. is horrible and the characters are almost always running into each other and just randomly standing in the way for like 7 seconds at a time. I am pretty sure that the people who made this game took the money and ran. Don't buy this game unless you want to regret spending $20.

This game has a good idea going on but it does not do a good job of building on to that idea in order to make the game interesting and fun. The controls are too complicated and it really isn't fun. I played the tutorial and started to doubt if I should have bought the game or not. Until this game gets better and is actually fun to play for a longish period of time to keep the players hooked, you should be ABSOLUTELY sure you want to buy this game before purchasing it!

I have owned this game since the kickstarter came out. The video you watch still has more features than the version we have. The slow progress would be one thing but the fact that we are stonewalled by the developers makes it much worse. The only answer you'll see from the community developer is "we cannot make any statements regarding the game.". They will not give us anything to show us what progress has been made. We went from weekly blogs to monthly vlogs. The first two vlogs were monthly, now they're 30+ days. They give us insight into how a game is made but provide no measurable progress for new material that will be in the game. From bugfixes to new content we haven't seen much of anything.

Maybe we'll see a change but after 3 years it's doubtfull.

This game has literally not had any kind of addition to it in several months now, The core gameplay is basically non-existent, and what is there could often be considered broken. Most of the few who did play it have long since abandoned the forums, and now the game is just wasting away.

Until improvements come to this game, I do not recommend buying. The gameplay shows real potential, but the clunky controls and extreme micro management bog down what ends up being a sandbox style tower defence game. Forums are loaded with suggestions for improvements but none appear taken for action. Developers are clearly AFK.
