This is what games were meant to be: a way to use game mechanics to tell a story and bringing it to the next level.

Brothers - A Tale of Two Sons is a splendidly innovative, little game with pleasing aesthetics and a touching narrative that is sure to amuse nearly any gamer. This game is a quintessential example of the avant-garde in gaming. Perfectly crafted single-player co-op is now a reality as Brothers - A Tale of Two Sons will have you controlling two characters simultaneously (by using the dual joysticks of modern controllers) as you embark on a short, but heartfelt, adventure.

The game plays as an adventure-puzzler game. You will have to control both of your characters simultaneously and use their different strengths and abilities in tandem to solve the various puzzles you encounter on your adventure. It really is quite an experience and there were several times where I could actually feel my brain get crossed-up as I tried to control both characters at once. This is definitely the kind of game that exercises your brain. I would say this mechanic alone would make the game worth playing, even if the other aspects were poor. Fortunately, pretty much all the other aspects of the game are first-rate as well.

Supplementing the innovative mechanics at the core of the game are the elegant graphics, pleasing soundscape, and overall charming atmosphere. There are some really varied and well-crafted areas to traverse as you play through the story. More than just looking different, the various areas of the game feel different— and each add their own twist to the gameplay.

The game is ultimately a story-driven experience. That story is simple, but told well— evoking empathy. The levels, while gorgeous, are quite linear; and the puzzles, while innovative, are quite simple. And those factors only serve to contribute to the brevity of the game. Most people should be able to complete the game in 3 to 4 hours; it is the kind of thing that can (and probably should) be done in one immersive sitting. It is the definition of “short-and-sweet.”

Brothers - A Tale of Two Sons is one of those games I would say basically everyone will enjoy. Even if you don’t really play games that much, or are someone who only plays a specific genre very different from this, I still must implore you to play this game. It is very well-crafted, delightfully innovative, and short enough that it is worth anyone’s time to experience.

All I will say about this game is, play it on your own in one sitting (2-3 hours). Stick with it, let yourself become immersed in the world. Enjoy it and see it through to the end.

This game is a gem. i didn't expect to like it so much. The story and ending are simply amazing. I recommend this game to anyone who likes a good adventure. The game is only 3 hours long and there is not too much of a challenge but overall it's an awesome experience. i enjoyed this more than any of these recent blockbuster games. Yes it's that good. 9/10

I was blown away by this game:
  • The controls were good ... it's difficult to wire your brain to control both characters at the same time, but this control scheme was simple, elegant and just made sense.
  • Relatively linear and easy, but it just allows more time to enjoy the game. The entire thing is like a gorgeous painting.
  • At core, the puzzles are all simple, but the variety and variations kept things fresh and enjoyable.
  • Scenes and panoramas ... just incredible. My favorite parts was when the camera would show you an area that you had just traipsed through 5-10 minutes before.
  • Level design. Incredible variety. Pastures, mountains, battlefields. The part where the ogre(?) is helping you climb a mountain is very clever. The battlefield ... awesome and a bit twisted. There are zip lines (for lack of a better term), boats, hang-gliding, goat-riding ... I forgot about the goat-riding!
  • Short but sweet. Just a ton of goodness compacted into a game that's decent length. I wouldn't want it shorter, and there's just no need to stretch it out. Well, I wouldn't complain if the developers cut the last level ... some of it was just unnecessary.

What I didn't like:
  • I didn't like controlling the boat.
  • I really, really didn't like the last level. I get that the developers want to drive in some emotion, but the stuff they have your character do after collecting the medicine was just effed up.

All in all, a great game. Even the stuff I didn't like was very minor in the whole scheme of things and doesn't take away from the sheer amazement you get. Incredible game. I really can't see the developers topping this gem.

In some ways, I might even consider this to be the best indie game ever. My current No.1 is Cave Story, which is a completely different game, so maybe we'll just call it a tie.
