Hva utviklerne sier:

Why Early Access?

“I believe that the best game will be created together with the people who are playing the game. I also believe that the time is right. Over the past year the development have shifted more and more from engine and graphics programming to gameplay mechanics and content. Now is a fun time for you to play the game and take part in the development.”

How long will this game be in Early Access?

“A year is a good guess. After that development will go on as usual and I will continue to do regular updates and DLCs.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“There are many ways to play but the main game is the "start with nothing and build an empire". This is already possible in the Early access version. The full version will add challenge in the form of hostile mobs that will try to stop you. It will also add more content like better/more building tools, block types, materials, biomes, mobs and items.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“In its current state the game offers countless of hours of fun and has infinite replay value. You can play the game or build whatever you want in the "Just Build" mode. The game is very stable. Current savegames will be compatible with future versions.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“The full game will be priced a bit higher then the Early Access version.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“The development process has been very open for years. I release new updates at a steady rate. I often ask questions to the community and take part in discussions and the feedback I get is of high value for me.”

I'm going to compare this to Minecraft because most people looking at it probably assume it's like Minecraft. But the thing is, it's not like Minecraft at all. Though Minecraft is focused on building, it has elements of survival. Blockscape is solely focused on building and exploration. The possibilities are endless as far as structures and their details are concerned. You can tell that by just watching the trailer.

EDIT: I'm getting a lot of people claiming that vanilla Minecraft is not about survival, so I'll specify even more differences between Blockscape and Minecraft for what I originally intended for you guys to understand. Enjoy :)

BLOCKSCAPE: Main focus is on building, but the element of survival is little to none. You don't have to gather food to eat, you don't have to worry about enemies (yet), or anything survival related. Gathering resources and building is the only thing you needed to work about. The building is very detailed, and it's not just one size of voxel. You can choose the size you want.

MINECRAFT: Main focus is on building, but with elements of survival, such as: Hunger, enemies, bosses, enemy dungeons, and more. As much as the game might be about building, there are at least minute elements of survival within this game, and the farther you get into the game, the more survival gets easy. Like any other survival game.

--FEEL AND LOOK-- This game feels very nice. It looks a bit cartoonish, almost, but fantastical at the same time. The colors from the foliage blend well with the grass in each biome and the water looks crystal clear and crisp. The materials that you use for houses have a rustic feel to them. Underground, the caves are clean, and ores shine different colors according to what they are. Trees in the forests are really colorful, along with the grass. My rating for the feel and look of the game: 9/10.

--GAMEPLAY-- I have yet to spend more time messing with the game but for now I can say the gameplay is good. Not amazing, but that's understandable for an early access game. The replayability is infinite, because the structures you can build are infinite themselves. The voxels in this game are small, and they morph together to create a smooth look. In the screenshots, you can see what I'm talking about. If you scroll your mouse wheel, you can choose bigger chunks of voxels to break. Once you finish breaking them, whatever you break is added to your inventory automatically. No need for picking up any things that fall. My rating for gameplay: 8/10.

--WORLD GENERATION-- The world generation is much different than that of Minecraft, for example. In Minecraft, biomes are a lot of times hard to navigate through (with the exceptions of desert, plains, etc.). The biomes that are generated in Blockscape are mostly flat, however, they end up sloping together into high mountains and low valleys. Some of the valleys are filled with ponds and lakes. The forest biome is my favorite as of now, there is a ton of shade in the forest and it feels very immersive. You can change a seed to your liking (such as in Minecraft) and each world is COMPLETELY different. There are castles and other buildings that are randomly generated and put into the world. My wish for a future update would be for there to be less plains and more forests. World generation rating: 8/10.

--UNDERGROUND-- I feel as though everything below the ground deserves its own section in my review. The cave generation is very well done. Every cave seems to be different, there are a lot of wide open areas underground which makes the underground more dangerous than in Minecraft, since it's easy to fall off a ledge. The darkness is realistic, and there are random glowing gems in the underground that help light the way. There are also bugs that you can collect underground that you'll find while mining.

--OPTIMIZATION AND SETTINGS-- When you start the game, you get a few choices for the settings. Vsync, foliage detail, surface detail, etc. I can play this game with about 25 fps on max settings on my Lenovo Y500 laptop. If you want my specs, just google that laptop to get the specs. I do get some graphical errors every now and then in this game, the chunk loading sometimes bugs out and the voxels don't load right, leaving the world transparent. ALT+TAB breaks the game as of now. My rating for optimization and setting choices: 7.5/10.

--CRAFTING-- I haven't had much experience with crafting yet, but you do get a nice little menu with the choices you have to craft with. No need to go to a wiki to find out how to craft, either. I'll update this part later when I have more experience with it. :)

--SOUND AND MUSIC-- It is possible to turn the music off using commands in-game. There's no options menu yet. The music sounds like what you find in the trailer. The sound effects are clean, and water sounds are not blurry. The music sounds like what you find in the trailer, plus a bunch of short piano songs. Sound effects: 8/10. Music: 8/10.

I'm going to keep this review updated as I play. Feel free to ask me any questions in the comments. :P

Total rating for the game? With everything combined together, I'd set it at a solid 8 for an early access game.

I have posted several tweets and messages to the developer of this game which have been deleted. There have been no updates what so ever on steam or the original site which was created.

All I can see this game doing is stealing peoples cash just so the dev can live easy.

The game is buggy and horrible to play for long periods of time, crashes heaps.

please reconsider before you purchase, the videos sucked me in too, its not what you think guys!

I've played Minecraft for several hundred hours. I've played Blockscape for 3 hours. Here's my conclusion:

Blockscape is better.

Or at least it will be after the developers have had more time to finish it off. It's still deep in development clearly, but I'm happy to report it appears very stable. I've had no major problems so far and 0 crashes. There's been the odd glitch here and there, but almost all of them are rendering issues and very minor ones.

Blockscape is like Minecraft in the sense that Saints Row is like Grand Theft Auto. Yes, both use are the same genre, use the same setting and themes, and even the same game mechanics. But no one would dare say they're both the same game.

Blockscape has taken the ideas of Minecraft, and reworked them completely to expand upon the concept so much that this really is entitled to something more than the label of "Minecraft Clone". This isn't a clone! This is much better!

I won't shy away from comparisons to Minecraft though because most of the people considering this game will be Minecraft players already, so here's the differences which make this so much better:

1. Bigger Worlds

What's the vertical height limit for Minecraft again? 256 blocks isn't it? I dare say this must be many hundreds of times larger, the mountains feel truly huge and realistically massive! The draw distance is incredible, you can see well off into the distance! Minecraft just feels so tiny after trying Blockscape.

2. Smaller Blocks

The Blockscape blocks are 1/4 of the size of Minecraft blocks, but there are tools to build 1x1, 2x2 or 4x4 blocks or more at a time to make it easier to build larger structures as fast as you do in Minecraft. This means you can build smaller details and things like steps much easier.

3. Better Blocks

Unlike in Minecraft, blocks aren't limited to just textured cubes. They can be corners, rounded, smoothed and more, allowing for a huge variety in shapes.

4. Visually Amazing

Just check out that video trailer. Yes it looks like that in game! Unlike Minecraft, this game isn't trying to look like a retro experience, Blockscape is very clearly looking for realistism, and they're achieveing it!

Bottom Line

If you play Minecraft, and love it, get Blockscape. It will improve, and become even better, but already what they have is much better than MInecraft. Some things are missing, such as enemies or NPCs, and there's some 3D models which are clearly placeholders, but with time I have no doubt these will be replaced. The mechanics are there already and I love what I see.

I have had a lot of faith in this game. It has looked beautiful, however BE WARNED. The developer has announced that he is changing the look of the game significantly. It will not have the realistic look as the main style anymore. It will revert to a more minecraft blocky look. While it will apparently have an option for realism, that will not be a focus any longer. This is pretty much a game killer for me, so if you are considering buying - wait until the new render settings are implemented so you can see what ot will look like - because what you see now may not be what you get.
