Defender's Quest is a case study in covering your weaknesses and emphasizing your strengths. Shoddy writing? A beautiful "skip" button in every cutscene and dialogue can be turned off. Difficulty? If you hit a brick wall in story mode you can go back and do slightly harder versions of prior maps to level up. Tower diversity? Unique equipment means your second Berserker probably won't be as good as your first, so it's harder to spam one tower. The slog of New Game+ not going fast enough? Triple experience is an option in the menus. All this lets you focus on the core tower defense game, which is best played at 4X speed.
Plenty of weaknesses can't be worked around, though. Workshop mods are few in number, and the first one I tried locked up the game in the first level. Character level is too huge a factor in whether you pass a level or not, meaning few maps feel appropriately scaled to your level at any given time. The game has a fixed resolution, even in fullscreen, and in fullscreen Steam notifications will leave artifacts on the screen. It's a little too easy to fall into a "two of each" mentality, setting up two identical sets of towers on the two major paths of most maps, with the only major variance between maps being what towers you level up first. The tower "skill trees" don't contribute much especially for those towers that only have variants of "melee attack" or "shoot arrows".
For all the weaknesses I've pointed out, there are few high points in the game. The boss fights are excellent, requiring you to balance "kill the boss faster" against "kill the creeps faster". Otherwise it's the usual tower-defense game of setting up your towers and watching them slaughter thousands of zombies. The game demands enough of your attention in boosting your towers etcetera that it's not a good "put something on in the background while you play" game, but isn't demanding enough to be a thoughtful or engaging experience.
All in all, it's hard to recommend Defender's Quest unless you're just dying for a tower defense game where you make a bunch of bars go up a la Progress Quest.
