“Analogue is a sit-up-and-take-notice achievement in storytelling, in interface, in research, in mechanics and in moral ambiguity.”
Alec Meer, Rock Paper Shotgun
“It was like watching a horror movie, knowing what was about to happen and curious only how awful the director’s willing to get. Love is not gratuitous but doesn’t disappoint – the fate of the Mugunghwa, and the event that precipitated it, is as valid as it is appalling.”
Matt Sakey, Tap-Repeatedly

I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this game. More important, I was surprised by how much I enjoyed the concept. The game is spent going through dairy entries that are gradually unlocked with the assitance of a couple of AIs. It's a visual novel so you shouldn't expect too much of gameplay mechanics, but the game does ask you to navigate windows as if you were really remotely accessing the ship, and that little bit of immersion (along with the mid-game "crisis" effects/gameplay) goes a long way in helping to tell the story.

Without spoiling anything: the story's setting is a bit weird, but it allows us to explore a more traditional, confucian society from the perspective of a more modern woman, along with how the various peole around her respond and their perspectives. It's interesting and, at times, heartbreaking. The storytelling is really well done so a lot of elements of the game (including the endings) can be interpreted differently.

It's short and enjoyable. Give it a try if you enjoy visaul novels or just enjoy good stories and have a couple hours to blow. 10 dollars is a bit more than I would pay, but if this is your style of game or if it goes on sale then give it a go!

Nice and relatively short game.

It has a very slow main story with a few secondary histories that helps to understand the social context of the game's background history.

The Art and BGM are really nice for being a Korean VN, it surpasses most of the non-Japanese VN on Steam. It's not really something that will make you cry or bind you to the characters, but it's something dynamic and easygoing for someone who wants to read some Korean VN.

An interesting balance for a visual novel in that it only has 2 characters other than yourself, but has a lot of opportunities to make chioces. The game is also good fun even if you don't focus at all on wooing either of the AI characters, but if you do decide to do so, check out some of the threads out there on which one of them different people prefered. a few hours to complete, but lots of replay to get to see the full content of the game.

Not very long, but quite interesting, thrilling and sometimes intense story.

The plot doesn't dive too deep into the science fiction, it's more of a reflection about the society (going into the feminist whining at times).

One of the strong points of the game is its soundtrack, which is fine by its own, and makes nice audio background for the story, that is unfolding before your eyes in the text logs.

Of the minuses of the game, though quite minor, I can mention:
  1. The need to make 2 playthroughs to get the whole picture. You can see almost everything by taking the Hyun-ae's route, but the remaining bits of data (and Mute's comments) are needed to get the full understanding of the situation.
  2. Not very logical solutions in few situations where you need to take action, which can make you turn to guides for help.

The game leaves you unsettled, in a good way. You can beat it once, discovering about 50% of the story and thinking that you don't need the rest, but soon you will return, feeling that you must see the whole picture.

For me personally, ending 4 (or the Mute's route in general) seems the most reasonable, mature and completing the story. Hyun-ae's route seems more childish and fanservice-like, let alone the Harem Ending. But, as was mentioned before, you'll need Hyun-ae to see the biggest part of the logs.

Overall, I can totally recommend this game. It leaves you more emotionally involved than most of the AAA's would, so it definitely pays off.

I liked the console mechanic and the backstory for the characters. Marathoned it in 4 hours and cried reading some of the stories. Be prepared to read a lot.

Well, to start the review, I think it's important to say I'm not experienced at all with visual novels, but the premise of this one made me interested enough to try.

And it was worth it. The huge amount of text and confusing names you have to go through sounds overwhelming at first, but eventually you begin to understand the story behind it all, and it's a very satisfying feeling. I only wish the game had more freedom in how to discover the plot. As it is, the sequence of reading a letter and showing it to the AI becomes kinda repetitive.

But, well, the most important part is the story itself, and on that front, the game does not disappoint. The setting created is very interesting, with this fusion of futuristic and medieval, and the themes the story present are well-developed. The revelations in the end are dark and heavy, but adequate to the tone of the story.

However, some moments were not - some of the dialogue becomes too much like a dating sim, and it's kinda jarring. To choose the ending I was most comfortable with I also had to pick a not very intuitive sequence. The binary system of choices is used to good effect at parts, but it fails at others.

All in all, it was a very, very worthwhile experience. The investigative aspect was well done, and the story and writing were worthy of being found out.

Came for the waifus.
Waited through some bull**** about the patriarchy and oppression and how men are evil but mass murderers can be given a free pass if the patriarchy did something to them.
Eventually got my qt tsundere AI waifu.

10/10.

Awful text wall. Presentation is low key.

Binary option yes/no, forced to agree with AI or else the game stops. I mistook it for a story, not a propaganda piece admonishing the PATRIARCHY.

Read a couple of reviews on the sequel, got the bundle (the above wasnt mentioned). Was trying to dodge the nude dating sims but yeah...

Though the games interface may lead you to believe it is a visual novel, aside from from the lovely AI companions who assist you throughout your investigation, the game is a interactive, heavily text-based storytelling experience in which you attempt to unravel the mystery of how the dystopian society that called the lost starship Mugunghwa its home suddenly collapsed.

It may seem difficult to get into at first if you have a short attention but before you know it the story, which you assemble based on the letters and diaries of the ships residents, really pulls you in. This is broken up with conversations between you and your AI companion that build character and affect your relationship with eachother in a way that can sometimes change the ending. There are also some challenging text based puzzle elements.

It's definately one of my favorite interactive novel experiences and I would recommend it to those looking for an intruiging (and often heartbreaking) story with a lot of replay value. That being said, it also may not be for the faint of heart as it touches on some very dark themes.

I honestly forget why I bought this. But I certainly don't regret it.
This was the first VN I read (played?) after Katawa Shoujo, and this was the first VN to actually make me feel for one of the characters. But while Hyun-ae was best waifu 2014,Mute came a close second out of two.
I don't usually write many reviews since I avoid talking story like the plague, but I have to give a shoutout to this well-written piece of modern literature, which has AI girls (if you're into that),more ways to fail then succeed (if you're into that),and a hidden harem ending which nets you an achievement and a pair of waifus (if you're into that).
Good writing, along with a good soundtrack and nice character sprites makes this a good game to buy if you like VNs.
(P.S. buy Hate Plus to continue, you can import your save from this to it,which is a cool bonus)

I'd rate this 9/10, here's why:

Good: A nice story, where you can play the detective browsing through logs and piecing together the story and the community at that time. I did enjoy the system of recieving new logs, it really makes a feeling that you're talking to an AI instead of just browsing through data. The characters were really well made, both the visible ones and invisible ones. I liked that I could learn about the historical culture in a fun way (I know it'smeant to be the future, but the facts were historical). The attention curve was done right, by presenting you with enough fresh infromation to keep you entertained throughout the game.

Mediocre: The music was okay, but it started getting repetetive after some time, at least it didn't disturb me too much. There were som cliche parts of the game, but most cases they fit rather well in.

Bad: Apart from the AI character art and few ending art cenes, there really wasn't much to look at. Large bulks of text, no voice acting whatsoever, if you're not a reading type, this might really put you off.

Overall an interesting first time diving into a visual novel. The novelty of being able to interact with the characters and interface as though I was in that universe sitting at the keyboard as opposed to my home and the keyboard was an interesting link.

Really interesting VN. The characters were nicely written, same with the story. You need to pay attention to all the details in order to get on the route you’re aiming for! The art style was ok and BGM was nice too.

But well, in my opinion, it gets a bit boring to replay this game since you gotta read a lot of logs over and over again just to trigger certain scenes. Even on skip mode, it takes time. But it’s fine, I think the originality of this story shines through that little problem. It’s really worth giving this VN a try, especially if you like sci-fi.

7/10, I recommend getting this game on sale.

This game is pretty different from the usual visual novel formula. It isn't focused in dating or romance, but it consists in a needed and mature cross-cultural reflection with elements of feminism all over the main plotline.

You will play as a space explorer who was hired to investigate the wreckage of a long lost space ship whose disappearance has been a mystery for ages. The ship is inhabited, it's crew is long dead. The only remnants of life are two AI programs called Hyun-ae and Mute. Together, you will dig through the archives, records and digital letters from old members of the crew trying to piece together where and why everything went wrong.

If you're a fan of Visual Novels with deep plotlines, I definitely recommend you to give this dramatic masterpiece a try.

WARNING: Avoid this game if you don't like heavy reading, because this game is all about reading (and re-reading) tons of texts and try to put small pieces of plot together.

The story is almost entirely kinetic (no meaningful choices) but it's a good story. My only issue with the game is you need to play two endings in order to get all of the story pieces. This is tedious since, as previously stated, the story is essentially kinetic.

A short visual novel about you being sent on a job to recover information about what happened to an old ship that was found drifting in space, its crew dead.

As you play through the story you discover a story about a woman called the "Pale Bride" who was forced into a patriarchal society and the downfall of the crew as a whole as a result of it regressing into patriarchy. The story is told mainly through text logs of letters, diary entries and such with some input from the AI personalities that exist within the computer, *Hyun-ae and *Mute, both representing opposing views on the matter of how the ship's society operated. *Hyun-ae is the woman who hates the ignorance and cruelty of the men and women who blindly accept the traditions and world views forced on them, while *Mute is the maiden who sees no problem with the world and happily agrees with and is very protective of the old gender roles.

The themes are quite mature and depressing, much more so than what you might expect looking at the screenshots. The people described in the logs are mostly awful people, if not by choice then by simply not understanding the opposing point of view, and reading through their entries was really painful at times. I could practically feel my stomach churn as I read the final log.

As for the VN itself, the way it tells its story is quite interesting, as it's mostly you simply investigating the past, with very little new story details introduced. The reactor malfunction part is somewhat infuriating if you just came for the story, but that's about the only complaint I have. Outside of that, the story and presentation is fine and unique enough to set it apart from most other VNs out there. There isn't as much artwork as most other VNs as it all takes place inside a holographic interface or something like that, but I'm fine with that. After all, the story is the important part and not the graphics, but what little there is of it is pretty good. There are multiple paths to take and I would strongly suggest you explore them as well just to get a bigger picture and see how the viewpoints of the two AI personalities conflict.

I'd recommend this VN to people who are a fan of the medium and maybe even those new to it. Just know that the story is a bit darker than the initial impressions would have you believe.

You can either date a tsundere homophobic ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ or a mass murderer.

Analogue: A Hate Story is actually a pretty good game, and a pretty short one at that- given that I got all achievements in less than 4 hours. Would definitely recommend buying this cute little gem if you're the type of person who reads everything in a story and also likes minimalistic things. That, and sci-fi.

For the most part, this game is really nice. The story is unique and well-written, however it is all fed to you in logs you have to read yourself to fully grasp the story, which can be pretty tedious at times if all you want is just want a qt AI waifu. The game also has a knack for making you want to ♥♥♥♥ yourself off trying to pronounce Korean names and failing at them.

The only complaint I have is that Mute doesn't get a cute maid outfit ; _ ;

This was a truly amazing game. It has two enjoyable characters and a large amount of written content. I went into it knowing that it was pretty dark but I was not prepared for how dark it turned out to be. Don't get me wrong, this is definitely a mixed-content sort of visual novel; it has some comedy in there too but when it gets dark it goes pitch black.

There was a point in the game that was deeply traumatizing to the point where it left me in a mild state of shock. When it happened I had to stop playing immediately but it held onto me and followed me the whole next day. Thoughts of what had happened and a strong desire to play the game again consumed my thoughts until I was able to come home from work and beat the game. Even then it followed me for another day until I managed to get what I thought was the "best ending". At the time of writing this I've only played about 3 hours. I am not the same person I was before I played this game.

I still haven't read all the content in this game, even at my very quick reading pace. This is definitely the kind of game where you want to read carefully. One day perhaps I'll get the other endings and read the rest of the content.

I love this game, its very interesting, although the first time you play it can be a little hard to figure out how to get started, and to get the "Harem Ending" i had to look up a walkthrough. Analogue: A Hate Story is a very unique Visual Novel that is based on real Korean history. You play as a space explorer attempting to salvage the data logs of the long lost flagship of Korea. While you read (and read, and read, and read) through the logs, you are guided buy two AI romantic interests. The story is very femminist, but not shove-my-views-down-your-throat so. It is also very dark, as in ♥♥♥♥ / body mutilation dark. If you enjoy reading historical fiction novels, and you don't absolutely hate everything femmminist, you'll probably like this VN. As an added bonus, there is a harem ending possible.

A great game if you like reading and messed-up plots. Also comes with history lessons and cute anime girls.

For a visual novel that has only 2 characters you can interact with, it surprisingly has a lot of depth and characterization than most other visual novels.

The 2 characters do not even do much to establish themselves, all the information about them comes from the logs other people made. The logs, in my opinion, are both a good and bad design choice. It’s good because it’s up to your imagination to process what is going on. On the other hand, it feels like I’m reading a history book all over again! Maybe it’s all the dates and charts that makes me feel that way, but I think it could have been handled a little better.

The game did not need player choices since the backstory mattered more than the characters, but it was neat that they included that. One player choice in particular had such a good and elaborate setup that I consider it most memorable moral choice in any visual novel I have played so far. I’m not going to spoil what it is, but you’ll know it when you see it.

Overall, I recommend this game to both visual novel fans and people who have not played a visual novel before.
