"The story is absolutely interesting, although it might get confusing sometimes. The soundtrack is relaxing and sad. And the artstyle is amazing."

“Analogue is a sit-up-and-take-notice achievement in storytelling, in interface, in research, in mechanics and in moral ambiguity.”
Alec Meer, Rock Paper Shotgun
“It was like watching a horror movie, knowing what was about to happen and curious only how awful the director’s willing to get. Love is not gratuitous but doesn’t disappoint – the fate of the Mugunghwa, and the event that precipitated it, is as valid as it is appalling.”
Matt Sakey, Tap-Repeatedly

Now includes the Science and Tradition DLC

Includes two new costumes for the cosplaying AI *Hyun-ae: a scientist's lab coat, and the traditional hanbok that the Pale Bride wore.

Back in the 25th century, Earth launched a generation ship into deep space, with the goal of establishing the first interstellar colony. It dropped out of contact and disappeared, never reaching its destination. Thousands of years later, it has finally been found.

Uncover the mystery of what happened to the final generation aboard the generation ship Mugunghwa by reading through its dead crew's logs, with the help of a spunky AI sidekick! Two pursuable characters. Five endings. A dark visual novel that further extends the non-linear style of Digital: A Love Story in a mystery featuring transhumanism, traditional marriage, loneliness, and cosplay.

This is a visual novel that does not overly rely on anime tropes, but instead draws from the darker points of Korean history, places the plot in a distant transhumanist future and uses this seemingly incongruable mishmash as a setting for a social commentary. While the game has been called feminist, I would actually say it goes quite a lot beyond that.
If you are interested in sentient AI's, dark family dramas and human rights issues, you might enjoy this strange little gem.

At first I wasn't 100% convinced I'd recommend this game, its definitely one you're going to have to put time into to read everything that is given to you. This is not a quick game, its a full blown story and well worth reading every log.

I was at around 30% of the logs when I knew I enjoyed this game, it sounds a lot but you're provided with a lot to begin with and the initial ones aren't that interesting. The more you read the better and more fleshed out the story is. Everyone's background is worth finding out as its both sad, surprising and a little nsfw at times too (which I didn't expect at all).

If you're looking for a quick click through visual novel this isn't the one for you.

I fully completed this game, 100% achievements, in 5 hours - so its not crazy long either.

The story is well worth the money and time. Hooray for waifu's :3

A fun Visual Novel to read through.

  • Simplistic UI.
  • Good writing.

  • One instance that can stop your progression with either characters (but can still get an ending).

Novel contains explicit adult contents, and the plot is deep and dark. Therefore it is not suitable for children and early-teens.

There are 2 distinctive AIs that plays the role of narrating and advancing the plot for you. These 2 AIs have totally opposite personality, and such they reveals 2 different plot-lines for you to read and understand the history and mystery of the "apocalyptic" event that happened. This "unreliable narrator" mechanic is what makes a visual novel so much more interesting and entertaining than conventional book novel.

The first few entries aren't that exciting, but as I uncover more story along the way, they gives me the urge to continue on. The logs are so carefully crafted, that almost every entry contains a mystery that tickle my curiosity to find out what happens next. The plot are mostly dark and sad, full of love and hate. The few happy moments in the game helps to further contrast the rest of the sadness.

There are a lot of waifu moments in the game. I am not a big fan of waifu games, but I do find them quite entertaining in this game. They serve as great timeouts in-between reading, helps me clear my mind and combat read-exhaustion.

There are a few occassions that you need to type some unix-like commands into the ship's console. There is also a timed-puzzle event in the game, which is very easy to solve if you're a gamer. In my opinion, these puzzle elements are completely unnecessary and breaks the mood for novel reading, but they do enhance the unreliable-narrator mechanic and further establish the 2-distinct personality of the AIs.

The background music is very nice, a mix of Korean-Asian styled theme played with clean modern-futuristic digital music. The music also blends nicely with the mood of the logs you are currently reading, as well as the personality of the current active AI you are interacting with.

There is one thing that I struggle in this game: I find it very difficult to remember Korean names. I had to re-read many logs to fully understand what's going on sometimes.

If you do not hate reading, this novel is definitely worth a try.

For achievement hunters
A minimum of 4 play-thrus are needed to 100% this game. All the achievements are very easy to obtain, just read the description or refer to a guide.

My score: 8/10

Analogue: A Hate Story is a great little visual novel that requires you put the time in and read. As a data collector sent out to download the logs of a long abandoned space ship, you soon discover that the ships AI is still perfectly opperational and in fact is inhabited by two AI who each have different takes on the history and life of the ships former inhabitants.

One of the best parts of the game is using the DOS style command terminal and using it to solve some neat ways, which are unfortunately a little scant. It's a nice touch however and really immerses the player in their role as a data collector.

The most important thing of course is the story and it doesn't disappoint. The two AI's are distinct and well developed in their motives and personalities and the story that unfolds around them is, at times, quite sad, tragic and even infuriating (but in all the right ways). I found the plight of the former inhabitants to be most interesting, although sometimes it can be hard to keep track of their names.

The presentation, while nothing mind blowing, is very nice too and the art for both AIs is very well done and the interface is very well constructed.

So if you're looking for a visual novel with a little something different, then this is for you. I think the regular price is pretty good for the 4-5+ hours you can get out of the game.
