Legend of Grimrock is a certain game of twenty years ago, dressed in modern clothes. The recipe for this turned out to be surprisingly simple - leave completely untouched form the core of the game, using new technology only where it is necessary.

Legend of Grimrock has almost no plot. Yes, somewhere in the background, we have a story of four convicts who were thrown into perdition to inhabited by monsters and traps bristling labyrinth of dungeons. Throughout accompany us also to be found in various places notes made by a man named Tooruma, who wandered through the corridors and halls before us. At each level during sleep appear "visions" with a few sentences. And that's basically all the elements of the story.

Interestingly, it was one of the first elements so characteristic of the classic games of this type. At a time when the "stimulus feature films" are limited to a minimum, begins to work the imagination. With scraps of information, in an atmosphere of understatement, alone, almost automatically, we are trying to fill these gaps with our own conjectures. It builds sometimes much more evocative atmosphere than most told, "film" story.

The gameplay is based on three pillars: exploration, solving puzzles and fighting.

We move through the corridors and rooms in a classic style. Levels are divided into square segments. One press of the button allows traffic to pass a single field or a reversal in the direction of 90º.

By far the biggest asset Legend of Grimrock are puzzles. At each of the thirteen levels we will get at least a few of them. Sometimes, their accumulation can be intimidating. All puzzles rely on the use of several of the same components. We have a mandatory collapse, levers, plates react to the pressure, the buttons in the walls, or portals. An absolute masterpiece of ingenuity is their use.

Although there are not too many types of enemies, they are diverse and properly assigned, so only at the end of the game started to be missing "something new". I like the fact that most of them require the use of appropriate tactics. Additionally, this old-fashioned and a bit clunky combat system perfectly conceals imperfections SI, which knows only two tactics: to follow and the encirclement. Moreover, developers have used these qualities even several times in riddles.

I must commend graphic design, but here also I have a few objections. It's basically the only "modern" element of Legend of Grimrock but it is used quite well. Textures, dynamic lighting, models of opponents and their animations look great.

Legend of Grimrock is a damn successful - I would say that close to perfection - back to the already-forgotten genre. Thought even the most hardcore enthusiasts oldschool and implemented the option to disable the automatic drawing of the map. For players remember the "good old days" and exchanging hand-trended on a piece of checkered maps, is a wonderful gift.

I'll keep this short. The game is fun and challenging. Combat needs some work, most of it you can cheese pretty easily. The majority of the challenge comes in puzzles--not combat. One puzzle is ridiculous, and could be a show stopper for anyone that doesn't hoard inventory items. The story was interesting, that is, right up until the end. Great atmosphere.

Dungeon crawler with grid-based movement & maps where progression requires a lot of attention to detail and figuring out cryptic messages, which tends to get very difficult along the way. Very enjoyable though the classes and races seem to be highly unbalanced for a single player RPG.
For example the mage class seems to be pretty weak for the long run since there isn't enough mage-friendly armor around and there isn't much in the game to help them defend themselves.

Legend of Grimrock 2 (here on referred to as LoG 2) is everything you could want for a sequel and more. I look forward to what the future holds with user generated content.

The Legend of Grimrock series are a set of real time, grid based, dungeon crawlers with pleasing graphics and a good aesthetic.

Movement is based on grid and you can turn left and right also move left, right, forward and backwards. You attack by clicking the weapon of choice from the character portraits. While this is not for everyone, it's stays true to it's roots and will please many after they have adapted.

While the story is a little weak, you will find yourself enjoying the neatly packaged puzzles that are littered throughout the world. I had a problem with the first game where you had to search each wall for secret buttons or risk missing one. LoG 2 improves on this by giving some subtle and some not so subtle hints that the player is missing something and should look deeper, resulting in a less difficult search.

Another area that LoG 2 improves upon is allowing the user access to outside areas, giving more varied feel to the game. There are now many more types of enemies and many of which have varied A.I.

The soundtrack has seen improvements since the first game and has a lovely score of atmospheric ambient noise and battle music for boss fights. The theme tune is catchy but I still see myself returning to the theme song of the first game.

In conclusion my experience with Legend of Grimrock 2 was amazing and to top off it all, there is extensive support of modifications, I look forward to seeing what people create.

Controller Support : Not suitable for a controller. Fully playable with just a mouse, although not recommended.

This is a RPG dungeon crawling game that I found to be very enjoyable, good dungeon design in general. Also the puzzles are top notch and varied. The reason I stopped playing this though is I needed to place certain items in the walls at certain areas and I left the right ones somewhere else because I wasn't going to use them. Because of this reason I would horde items. You shouldn't get bored with this game when you play it.

P.S. Keep an eye out for those secrets.

Great game. Tricky sometimes (for me at least, or I grow impatient with the years :-). If you liked Dungeon Master LoG is, probably, as close and as good as it gets but with its own charm as well.

As a side note I hope that they'll port LoG 2 on MacOS X as well. Really. They'll get my money when they do.

Pretty fun! It's challenging, but not ridiculous. The best part of the game is figuring out the puzzles. Very satisfying.

Legend of Grimrock is a well made Dungeon Master genre game with nice puzzles and nice variety of enemies. I would recommend the game to all that have nice memories from the age of original DM or want to try something a bit different. As a Finn I a quite proud of the fact that this game was made by small Finnish indie team Almost Human. I surely will buy the Grimrock II also now that the original is completed.

Spare time toilet 2014. I am a huge fan of puzzle games, and this game fails to deliver. Pixel hunts are not fun puzzles, in my opinion.

I think this game strives more for appealing to people who have nostalgia for old-school games like Eye of the Beholder, and there's absolutely nothing wrong with that - it's just that, coming from this with my perspective of just wanting to have a fun time, this game wastes a lot of my time doing pointless things that aren't really fun for me.

If you like this style of game, definitely check it out. Otherwise, if you have no special nostalgia for this, give this a pass.

I wanted to like this one. Really, I did. I'm all about old school RPGs, it comes with the Jim Sterling seal of approval, and I enjoy games that let me throw my own content in a bit, like with the portriats...

That said, I couldn't do it.

The combat is tiresome, tedious, and unrewarding. The interface is clunky and amatuerish. The bestiary is lifeless, the puzzels are unfulfilling, and worst of all, there's no dialog for all intents and purposes. This is as souless of a dungeon crawler as I've ever seen, devoid of wit, story, motivation, and wholly undeserving of the level of hype it's gotten.

I can put up with it's old timey grid gimmick - maybe even enjoy the novelty some. But that's all that it brings to the table, and it isn't anywhere near enough. The interface needs a complete overhaul, the combat needs a lot of work, and for the love of Skyrim put some plot and dialog in! A straight up dungeon crawl can work, but you really need to frame it better - give me more of a world, give me context and a story. Give me details and motivation and reward me with more than a set of stairs and a big spoonful of the exact same thing I just did.

I gave it a chance, and it isn't for me.

Honestly, considering the reviews, I was a little let down. It's okay, for short bursts at a time, but it's not a game that I could play for hours on end. Just not a fan of the movement and battle mechanics, mostly. It feels really... clunky... to me. Having to push q and e to turn, while I guess is necessary, considering the fight mechanics, just feels wrong to me. Using right mouse on a weapon to attack seems really backwards. Maybe that is a genre staple. I really don't know, but to me, it is far from intuitive.

I really disliked this game. I get that it's a dungeon crawler, but the game mechanics are awful. Having to control four characters with up to eight different weapons while managing to avoid enemies is a bit of a pain. The linear movements with turning controlled by the Q and E keys was annoying and I could not manage to get used to it. Made it to about the second or third level and died continuously from the same annoying mob of enemies and called it quits.

The game might have been great in 1996, but today... horrible. The control(s) are horrible. Forward, back, left, right. That's it. No "looking around" via mouse movement is possible. Played for maybe a little over half an hour. Got so frustrated I gave up. Thank God I got this game for next to nothing or I'd be super PO'ed.

4 Helden 1 riesiger Dungeon voller Gefahren!

I ♥♥♥♥ing love this game.

The level's aren't randomized, but that's alright because they're built with certain puzzles in mind. The puzzles are often pretty good, and the combat is entertaining, following the a grid layout where your party of 4 moves around as one. You individually select the items in their hands to attack/throw/cast spells/etc. Tons and tons of secret rooms and items.

You can create your group of 4 based on certain classes and races, distribute points and unlock traits, then find gear as you go. It's an excellent combination of old dungeon crawlers and new graphics and game design.
