Legend of Grimrock: a classic dungeon crawling role-playing game. Legend of Grimrock gets it right by keeping the premise simple and making the game easy and interactive while making sure to put the challenge in the combat and the puzzle solving.
You were four prisoners who were shoved into the depths of Mount Grimrock to atone for your crimes, you are free the moment you fall, however you have to escape Grimrock if you want to enjoy your freedom, and that’s the story. There are tidbits of lore and story in scroll, text on walls and various objects you find throughout Grimrock, its simple and that’s honestly for the best.
The game plays up the survival part well with needing to keep your guys fed or risk of getting hungry, health and energy regenerate although slowly, you can rest but risk getting attacked while resting.
Graphics weren’t top notch for the time it came out, but they don’t feel dated or old, they’re more than adequate and the style of the dungeon and its inhabitants is very realistic in tone. There is no music throughout most of the game; instead you get this creepy ambiance similar to Amnesia or Penumbra games. It isn’t meant to scare as much as it is to create a tone of dread from hearing ‘things’ in the distance, again the game feels like it’s going more for a realistic immersion.
Combat is much more interesting and tactical, your team is in a 2x2 formation, two in front and back, the two in front are taking the brunt of the damage while the two in back are support, you can switch these positions easily and you often will in order to save companions from death or to rotate dealing damage, spells are cast by selecting the correct rune sequence, you can do this as long as your skill level lets you and you know the combination, you can find scrolls that tell you correct rune combinations, but these aren’t required, you can find them through experimentation, or if you don’t care about finding it out, the internet.
You can also craft in this game various potions from the reagents you find in Grimrock, potions can be simple healing or energizing potions to better damage or even invisibility, again you can find the correct combination through experimentation or scroll and recipes.
Finally the puzzles in the game are much more challenging, there are a few simple and easy ones to begin with, but, even in the first room you start in there are various secret switch to hidden treasures, and as you progress the game starts putting more challenging riddles up for you to solve, some necessary to progress others to great treasures to help you survive. Overall, I felt the puzzle solving in this game was a good balance between challenging while also not needing to be overly difficult.
Legend of Grimrock is a great throwback to dungeon crawling RPGs, it shows that this type of game can easily be done and be fun if done well, it’s simple and easy to get into and actually gave me quite a challenge and I was really impressed once I finished the game, it took me about 20 hours to beat the game, and for $14.99 USD that is not bad at all. I highly recommend this game if you’re looking for good ole fashioned role-playing games, or just something different from the standard fair now-a-days, if you need that more action oriented role-playing game, Grimrock may not be for you, although I still feel it’s just as fun, if not more.
TL/DL; Legend of Grimrock is a classic dungeon crawling RPG with up to 20 hours of gameplay at only $14.99 USD, it’s a steal and well worth the price, its challenging, creepy, and interesting, it’s simple in its gameplay and story making it easy to jump in, it’s worth checking it out of you enjoy RPGs in general, if you need more action oriented RPGs, it may not be for you, but, I encourage you to check it out, you won’t regret it.
