What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“We want to show the game to a wider audience - to you! Show that we are listening to your feedback and we'll be improving the game based on your suggestions.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We want to release the game somewhere in Q1/Q2 2019, so as long as everything goes as planned, the game will stay in Early Access for several months.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“Gameplay-wise, the full version will be longer (approximately 3 times longer, with different areas than those in the Early Access version), will contain more enemies and more weapons. We are also planning to improve gameplay by adding new gameplay features, including collectibles (we plan to give more variety and give the player more reasons to collect them, by, for example, introducing some power-ups). Other language versions are also being discussed but will most likely appear in the release version.
We also keep improving the game's performance.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The version can be fully completed from the beginning until the end, does not contain any critical bugs related to gameplay, audio or visual assets. We have run the game through a general QA to ensure that the players are satisfied with the quality and do not feel that we are treating Early Access as beta-testing.
The game contains a save system and a variety of video settings (resolution, vsync, texture quality, ambient occlusion and so on).”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“The price won't change.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We want to gather feedback from our Community members on the game's combat (abilities, overall feeling), level design (enemy placement, traps). We have already run focus tests and adjusted the game based on this kind of feedback, so we would like to continue following the path of building the game around end-users.”

“I think I wouldn't be in error to call ELDERBORN DOOM sans the guns.”

“Elderborn is a title that deserves peoples attention for its minimalist style and ability to imbue the player with a sense of power and badassery using only music and awesome weaponry.”
Cog Connected

“Between the excellent melee combat and the stellar presentation, Elderborn is shaping up to be one of my most highly-anticipated games of this year, and it should be for you, too. Good melee games are somewhat rare in this shooting game era, so Elderborn is going to have a big chance to shine brightly.”

About This Game

ELDERBORN is a single-player, FPP, soulslite, heavy-metal slasher with challenging, skill-based, melee-only combat. It's inspired by FPS cult classics from the times when games didn't hold the players hand. It combines an old-school feel with the modern git good games culture to give you a barbaric adventure you'll never forget.

With the Call of Jurmum update, opening the gates to the ancient, cursed city, the game now has over twice as much content and is just a step away from its full release! New locations, new enemies, reworked mechanics and interface, lore codex, and more!

Get ELDERBORN and immerse yourself in the action-filled, barbaric world waiting for those bold enough to answer the challenge. If you're looking for your next soulslike experience and would like to try something a bit different, don't wait another minute. It's a whole new level of getting good, when you take control of a mighty barbarian!

Whether you praise the sun or fear the old blood, ELDERBORN will make you feel right at home. It delivers a soulslike experience from a new perspective - through the eyes of the hero. You'll be exploring an ancient, ruined city (starting from its vast underground) to discover its many secrets and face in battle the many abominations lurking in the shadows.

Gather the essence of your foes to build up your power level. Die, and lose all the essence you were carrying. Bring it back to safety and increase your attributes, and unlock skills that will aid you in combat. Master various weapons and figure out best timing and tactics. You will need every advantage when facing a mighty and skilled boss.

The 80s when we were born, and the 90s when we grew up were full of awesome. We had Arnold Schwarzenegger as Conan the Barbarian (and the mighty good Conan cartoon series), we had He-Man, we had Simon Bisley's Slaine comic books, we had... you get the picture. Pop culture was GOOD, and full of rich flavors.

Then came video games to bring our adventures in fantastic land to a whole new level. We were pushing on, knee-deep in the dead, against the legions of hell. We were spinning our nine-inch-nail guns, waiting for the ancient beasts to come around the corner. We were the dark messiahs kicking against the minions of darkness. It was the dream. ELDERBORN is our tribute to all these amazing, colorful memories.

While developing ELDERBORN, as a rule of thumb, we look at every piece of our work and ask ourselves "is this METAL AF*?" If the answer is "no", we roll back, put on our headphones, and do that element over.

Jokes aside, heavy metal, especially in its heroic, power-metal variety, has been a great inspiration to the game's motifs and aesthetics. We want you to feel like the hero of the metal sagas. We want your eyes filled with imagery worthy of album covers.

Mature Content Description

The developers describe the content like this:

Elderborn takes place in a classic, Howardian, dark fantasy setting where strength is the law and there is no place for mercy. Brutal melee combat featured in the game creates gory imagery on every step. Heads will fly. Literary. The world depicted in the game also pays aesthetic tribute to heavy metal album covers. Scantily-clad warrior maidens and buffed barbarians with some artistic anatomical liberties are to be expected (but no actual nudity).
