Industrial Light & Magic
  • Диалоги для игры писал получивший множество наград писатель-фантаст Орсон Скотт Кард
  • Очаровывающая музыка Вагнера создает грандиозную атмосферу

I would have to say to tread carefully on this game. If you are a die-hard sci-fi fan, Lucasarts adventure game fan, or returning fan (played the game in your younger years) then I don't see a reason not to get this game. For the rest of us the game is mediocre at best. The best part of the game is the storyline. I found myself on the edge of my seat wondering what would befall Boston Low and his space crew, as they try to find their way back to earth. Sadly other than that, the game lacks in many of the other areas. The games tone is very serious, too serious in my eyes, lacking the humor that a majority of the Lucasarts games present. The art doesn't look good for this game anymore either. Games like Monkey Island or Indiana Jones, while drawn much the same as this game can get away with some of this old look because they are not about space and the future. This game just doesn't seem to fit right at all for 2016, 20 years since its release. Finally, the biggest reason that the game is sort of a flop by Lucasarts standards comes down to the puzzles. These puzzles are also some of the most abstract and difficult I have ever encountered. While I like a good challenge, I feel like the best games are balanced enough that you are able to solve puzzles without having to look at a guide in order to solve it and also not a game that the puzzles are spoon-fed to you. This one has many segments that a guide seems like an absolute must. The amount of time that is spent trying to figure out what to do slows down the pace of the game leaving the gamer as lost as the space crew gets. In the end I think that the puzzles were enough to get me to down vote this game. No this game is not horrible, but I don't think that as many people will enjoy the game as has been made out by other reviews.

Check out my other adventure reviews on my page!

near the end of the game, when i tried to save it would say "game was NOT saved" and i was never able to fix it. however, i was close enough to just finish the game up so it didn't matter.

older game but definitely still good. pretty static backgrounds and neat animation/cutscenes.

8/10

Pretty great Sci Fi Lucasarts point-and-click adventure game, with memorable atmosphere, music, and voice acting. The story is fairly solid, and most of the puzzles are logical and intuitive. It's not perfect, and it's not the greatest game in Lucasarts' catalogue, but it's a solid game every adventure game or sci fi fan should try.

I had this game as a kid and saved at the wrong time. I would have had to start over and about 19 years later I did. So satisfying to finally finish it! Great point and click game. All I can really say is if you liked Lucas Arts games in the '90 this is worth while game.

One of the most compelling atmospheres in a video game. The music, graphics and mood come together in a way that takes you somewhere special. A great stormy evening game.

A beautiful experience from the golden age of adventure games. More refined than previous Lucas Arts classics, makes use of all the experience that this great company had obtained from former efforts. Make sure to play it using ScummVM, the steam version plays reasonable well out of the box, but scummvm gives you the best possible experience (there's an alt-tab issue when using the raw steam version).

A classic point and click adventure game, The Dig is filled with pulp style sci-fi adventure with some interesting, though occasionally frustrating puzzles, a wonderful musical score, some pretty solid writing, and decent voice acting. It's a lot of fun to play, and is a solid experience.

Recommended as one of the classics of the genre.

I've been waiting since 1995 to play this game but at the time didn't have a PC that could run it and when I did get one no one I knew had the CD-ROM and then I discovered other games, drinking, girls etc.

Now many years later I finally got to sit down and play and finish the game. It was certainly a trip back to the old school Lucasarts' point 'n click. I'm going to try to give an objective review since I never played it before now.

Audio: I've played both the GOG version and the Steam version. I couldn't read any difference despite what other reviews have said. The music is good, eerie at times, definitely atmospheric and I think works for the setting. A dead alien world. The dialogue is clear and fine but the voice acting is a bit inconsistent. Robert's voice as Commander Low is perfect. You can definitely tell the difference between a professional actor in his element and the other's sometimes wooden delivery of dialogue. That said every does a good job and I particularly liked the Alien language what little is heard anyway.

Graphics: They are old. Great for their time. But old. At times I cringed at what used to be so stunning to my generation back in the day. Some of the cut scenes are quite good actually. The Tram underwater scens looks impressive for their time and I imagine I would have been blown away back then.

Gameplay: The puzzles are tough. There is little in the way of hints. If you miss something going back through the tunnels and trams is tedious and annoying. Though you can at times skip bits of it by double clicking on the edge of the screen and you'll jump to the next scene which can be handy.

The game requires you to figure things out by trial and error. Click part A to parts B thru Z and you may find a connect. Honestly... use the youtube walkthru if you get stuck. The game should be about enjoyment... no one is going to judge you for cheating on a 22 year old game when you get stuck. Some of the solutions are ridiculous and there is one puzzle I would have strangled the devs for at an early stage in the game that I think almost broke me.

Surprisingly there is no combat like in Indiana or Monkey Island which I think is a bit of a let down when you're supposed to be a tough military commander and you get your ♥♥♥ handed to you by a scientist... twice!

There are limited people to interact with and in that the game gets very lonely in a way.

Overall I liked it and it was fun to play it because I missed out all those years ago but... I don't think it's for anyone unless it's on your bucket list.

It played well for an old game. Had to drop my resolution to 800x600, and it looked like the first time I played. It has a nice sci-fi vibe to it. Not the greatest point and click, but worth a play through. Got me hyped up for DoT remastered!

So far, so good.

It's a very captivating, very well designed, beautiful old school title.

For the most part I found the puzzles really straight forward, but as you get into the game, it begins to get a bit knotty and annoying. I had to use the guide a few times and it took away from the experience. After a while I just found myself at odds to the logic of a few of these puzzles. That being said, I enjoyed the music, voice overs and general design of the game.

I would recommend this game, but it can get a bit hard. A good guide is always a friend to have. The plus side is very much the alien discovery feel, it really captivates that well.

For a decent immersion experience, try this game, it is worth its money. I bought my copy through a discounted Lucas Arts Adventure Pack deal.

3/5 - Could be so much better if the puzzles were simpler. I hated braking my immersion with a guide.

Excellent old game from the 90s. This version is not a remastered or remake, is just the same old game but with a new compiled exe (from 2009 i think) so first you get great compatibility with modern 64bit windows and even macs. I would say that if you already played the game 20 years ago, (And you liked it) you get the chance to have it on your steam library, and not some old PC DOS CD that doesn't work anywhere and you won't take around with you anyway (of course). So if you already played it, and you love it, and it is ON SALE (for pretty much nothing) do yourself a favor a have this on your library, even just as historical reference of a good great sci fi adventure from many many years ago.

If you didn't played this game 20 years ago, and you didn't even played games more than 10 years ago...it can be hard to know if you will adjust to the technical side of this game and have the patience to see the good story and great places and the music.... i know it would be hard for me even if i didn't had already played the game....
So beware of this:
The graphics are old (wich have some amazing backgrounds sometimes, but in a terribly low resolution (320x240) and full screen, not wide screen.
As i said, backgrounds are hand drawn , great, but not only that...characters animations (for special cut scenes in game) are hand drawn!! (wich is something very very rare) but still , it is hand drawn animation from the 90s from north america, so it won't look soo great, but still....with so much computer animation everywhere these days, suddenly seeing hand drawn animation looks...special somehow, i don't know if good, but different...
music by the way is amazing...alltough it is done mainly with synth, it is very orchestral, it uses several segments from wagner overtures....yess...it's possibly the best game soundtrack ever...altough it is a little low quality (recording wise), still the epicness of this soundtracks reachs loud and clear from the first introduction scene. You even have the chance to look for the audio cd soundtrack wich has better recording quality.

The story is very good, very surprisingly mature for a lucas arts game, very dramatic and very sci fi and existentialist.
For me it shares many points with the movie INTERSTELLAR from Christoper Nolan, altough different things happen in the stories (no spoilers here) i think the base it's the same, you have your 4 (5) austronauts, the chief of the mission, wich is the more practical guy, then you have the scientist in the movie, and the geologist in the dig, and finally the doctor/reporter. What happens then is different, but it deals with interstellar travels, alien planets...archeological digging...loneliness....the fate of the human civilization... also, interstellar was a script penned by steven spielberg, before the nolan brothers took it....the same as the dig wich was originally a steven spielberg project wich deemed to be too expensive to be made as a movie, so it was handed to the guys at lucas arts to make a game out of it (and it took them 6 years to be able to complete the game!) i mean, c'mon, even the music from insterstellar it's similar to the dig

As for the gaming part , it's very good, for the most part, it has some very clever puzzles wich are very original and go great with the theme of the story. They even tell a story as you uncover them, it's not something you see every day. That said, there are just a couple of very obscure puzzles that you will probably, almost certainly, need a walktrough, but it's allright, it doesn't take away from the rest. This is a world you want to know more, see the history, and know what happens until the very end.

A fun adventure game with some light humor.

The initial part of the game is fairly simple, detonating the explosives to avert the trajectory of Attila. The second, and major part of the game is focused on getting home and exploring an alien world.

The game does have quite a bit of back tracking through areas and some of the puzzles can be a little confusing to figure out what is needed to progress. It can be easy to miss an area to explore or a piece to collect. Also, you will want to see Commander Low move much more quickly when you know exactly where you need to go next and watching him stroll is slightly infuriating.

The game graphics have aged a bit and don't look as impressive as when it was released many moons ago. The music is great and the voice acting works very well, although I wish there was a skip dialog button if you accidentally click on a question you've already asked and have to wait for the characters to finish before you can either stop asking questions or ask the question you meant to ask before.

If you're a fan of adventure games, you will probably enjoy The Dig.

The Dig * 9/10

I remember when I was a little kid there was a friend of mine that strongly advised me to play The Dig. I didn't have any money on my own and my parents were very strict in spending money with videogames so I never had any chance to try it... Until 20 years later I bought it on Steam... MUAHUAHUAHUAHUA!
Ok, so I knew already this is a classic point & click adventure, made by the Great and Storical Lucas Arts which was leader in the sector so it was a guarantee on its own. What I didn't know was the subject and part of the plot was from Steven Spielberg... OK, not entirely, because this game took 5 years to develop, and there have been many different directors that changed, partly and sometimes completely, the game.
Anyways you can feel the Spielberg touch, this is a beautiful science fiction adventure. The premise might look boring and quite abused, but remember this is a 1995 game: a giant asteroid is going to crash on earth. A team of astronauts with different specializations are being sent to blow it up and limit the impact damage. And now comes the first plot twist: once the field team blows up the minor charges to crack an opening to blow the asteroid from the inside, the find inner chambers and kind of technologic manufacts. As soon as they put together a few parts the asteroid morphs into a poliedric spaceship that brings the team to an abandoned planet, Almost dead with traces of civilization, mysterious artifacts and astonishing landscapes. Here our team will struggle to find a way to get back to planet Earth between internal conflicts and amazing discoveries.
So... Yes, the story and the characters are amazing as well as the music, and the puzzles are not extreme and illogical, they just require some wandering, exploration and logic.

+++PROs+++
  • STORY. One of the most important sides of an adventure, besides puzzles, is the story and here we have an amazing story. As already said even though the premise might look already seen a thousand times the plot twist demonstrates you know nothing and you have seen nothing. Everything happens in the unknown planet and the revelations you'll discover, together with the conclusion (with a minor but not so different alternate ending) is something that will amaze and make you wonder why nobody made a movie out of this. And actually this was supposed to be a movie as this game came from a Spielberg's idea, but the cost at the time was excessive, so...
  • CHARACTERS. I admit I didn't relate too much to the three protagonists at the beginning, but the more you hear dialogues, and you see their interactions, the more I've appreciated them. I really liked the dialogues, their conflicts and the moments when Boston Law is on his own speaking and commenting about stuff on his own.
  • MUSIC. Another very strong point of the game: beautiful strings and atmosphere tracks always accompany your journey in this unknown world. On top of that a dynamic engine will make music change according to your actions (this only in few particular situations, of course)
---CONs---
  • INCOMPATIBILITIES. Of course this is the classic Ol game released and forgotten so when you play you'll see a small window pop up... And you can't set any option. Luckily there's always the Steam community ready to help, so I quickly found out that I had to check the DPI options in the compatibility tab of dig.exe properties, while for the full screen the good old ALT+ENTER will just work fine... B-)
  • DURATION. Unfortunately it's quite short. Even though there are long dialogue sections this game really didn't lasted too long and it's a great pity... I Demand Moar!!! XD

This game is very unique and I can recommend this everyone who likes adventure games, but if you are not familiar with the genre I suggest to postpone the game. As others mentioned, the music fits very well, the graphics and the story is okay also. There are some really good reviews, so I won't go into the details why this game is awesome.
I've read all the negative comments because I was curious what are the cons.
The dialogues are crucial in a point and click game, sometimes you have to interact with others to move forward, deal with it.
The other one was the difficulty. All I can say, welcome to the 90s. Yeah, the game is hard, and not so straight forward as games nowadays, but that makes it challenging. I don't think there are much pixel hunting and there are clues most of the cases, what to do. I agree that keys are annoying but I think a little trial-and-error can be forgiven in an alien environment. :) The thing with the bats annoyed me also, I was pretty sure I tried to use the flashlight earlier, but there was a clue here also. Most of the time, Brink was working on the relic but when time has come to scare him, he was fumbling with the crystals, and he was visible from the bat cave too. Nevertheless, I understand the frustration in this case.
If you get boring due to the long movements and animations, you can skip these if you want. No matter, how long an animation is, you can skip it with Esc (it is in the manual too) and you can move quickly through scenes with double click: you are teleported to the double-clicked new area (e.g. room). So there are tricks to speed up the game.

First of all:
This is an Adventure game from 1995, so the graphics are now 20 years old. So you should expect pixelated graphics and it even doesn't run in fullscreen 8at least I didn't managed to do so)

The game has a pretty good and interesting storyline and is challenging, because the riddles are not always easy to solve, but still logical. Also the voice acting was made nicely.

If you are a fan of classic adventure games, then you should consider buying it :)

The Dig® is one of the most beautiful games of all time. It's not a game. It's a work of art and a true serendipity. The game was conceived by Steven Spielberg as an episode of a TV series called Amazing Stories, and later as a film, but the idea proved to be way too costly. Thankfully, they didn't scrap the idea and turned it into one of the most amazing adventure games ever made.

The cutscenes may look dated and not as cool as the ones from Full Throttle, another Lucasarts masterpiece that came out that same year (1995), but the puzzles, music, sound FX and voices (well, maybe not Mary Weiss' and Steven Blum's performances) are top notch.

Instead of spending large amounts of money into yet another generic, cookie cutter FPS, give this title a try. 21 years have passed, but it's still incredible.

Originally planned as an episode of Steven Spielberg's Amazing Stories, then later a movie, It was deemed too expensive to produce at that time. Couple years later you bring together Spielberg, Orson Scott Card, Brian Moriarty (who was behind some of Infocom's greats) and LucasArts and you get The Dig.

Interesting development history aside, i really enjoy this game. I got it when it came out back in '95 and still own the original box and soundtrack. The Dig wasn't your typical lighthearted LucasArts adventure game dealing with survival and death on an alien world. In some cases that made for a challenging game, as a lot of the alien devices required a good bit of finagling to figure out how to solve them. Back then, there wasn't an internet readily available to turn to when you got stumped. The game could get frustrating in that aspect but there was still plenty to like; The serious nature of the setting, Robert Patrick voicing the main character (LucasArts games were getting a lot better in the voice department when they started getting Talkie versions of their games), the alien landscapes and the ambient music by Michael Land.

Yes, i grew up in the golden age of adventure games, so i am going to be a bit bias about these gems that i love. Point n' Click is pretty much ingrained into my being and will always feel second nature to me. Doesn’t mean someone can't stumble upon The Dig, give an almost 20 year old game a spin and still find something really special. These hand drawn graphics still remain pleasing to me heh.

The Dig is a facinating piece of DOS game history. The development history of the game is almost as interesting as the game itself, and I recommend you look it up.

By modern gaming standards, I'm not sure if I would call it a 'good' game but there are lots of good things about it.
These good things include gorgeous visuals and amazing sound design.

I have to be brutally honest, though. You are probably not going to be able to complete this game without a walkthrough. This game is full of classic point and click puzzle bs. Items you're supposed to interact with can be hard to find among the lush background art, and the game's hints can be cryptic at best. This game's puzzles will make you feel things. Most of these things will be frustration, but it's a very special type of frustration you don't get from modern games. I admit that it's a rewarding feeling to figure out a puzzle on your own

A big selling point of the game is the cinematic writing, and there definitely is a cinematic feel. The quality of the writing declines as the game progresses, though. It feels rushed in my opinion. There are some genuinely funny moments, but at times you may be frustrated with the characters' stupidity. Actually, this is sort of a plus for me since I found it amusing. Then again, I think Plan 9 From Outer Space is a science fiction masterpiece, so your mileage may vary.

I still enjoyed the game though, Maybe it's because I grew up on this stuff. But Despite it's flaws, you can tell there was a lot of effort put in. For the price, I say give it a shot.

Criminally overlooked point & click adventure. One of the best ever created.

Old-school Lucasarts Adventure games are famous for setting the standard in storyline and puzzles. The Dig was at the epitome of this company's era and it still shines bright. Great graphics for its time and a well voiced cast made this stand out and it still does due its storyline. The puzzles can be very difficult at times, but the challenge is well rewarded with the continuation of its storyline. You are part of a crew that goes to explore a meteor that has approached Earth. As you explore the meteor you find out that it's not a meteor and soon you are sent to the depths of space where you have figure out how to come back to Earth alive.

One of my all time favorite games as a kid. Lucasarts made a fantastic one on this, and even had a novel written along the same story.

Despite a few unintuitive puzzles and a healthy dose of scifi cheesiness (particularly in the third act), The Dig deserves its place on many 'Best Adventure Games of All Time' lists. I first played it twenty years after its release, yet I still found it absorbing and enjoyable.

High-quality production values and voice-acting (for the time), excellent music, and a decent message beyond the typical 'beware of technological solutions to existential problems' scifi standard: ('don't aspire toward a next life to the detriment of the one you're already living') .

A legendary game, yet one of LucasArts' lesser known pieces due to its somewhat-awkward presentation. The DIG started as an idea by Steven Spielbeg that he soon abandoned with nowhere to take it, handing it over to his friend George Lucas' studio to make something out of it.
What they created was something magical. An odyssey into space and the man's determination to survive and explore.

Playing as the aging astronaut Commander Boston Low, you must traverse a strange and marvellously deadened world beyond our reach, of a planet long abandoned by most of its former inhabitants. Joined by his two crewmates being the severe reporter Maggie Robbins and the cool-minded geologist Ludger Brink, Boston must use his natural survival instincts and quick-witted skills of human engineering to try and formulate a way to escape, explore, and uncover the origins of this mysterious planet, and how they must find their way back home.

While the DIG may not be LucasArts' best work by far, it is certainly not one you should miss if you love their library. The graphics are not the best, being that while the LucasArts style works well for more cartoony games such as Sam & Max or Monkey Island, it's a little more uncertain to do so with actual human characters and as a result they can look rather off during cutscenes. Like "monkeys wearing human masks" off.

Nevertheless the rest of the game shines through with its pure atmosphere. The graphics for its weird alien backgrounds are gorgeous, the sound design is just absolutely at the top of its game more than ever from LucasArts with roaring waves, howling winds, deep resonance within space and the most oddest of creatures wallowing and shrieking from all around you.

The dialogue is rather snarky in about 80% of its places but that only makes it more fun with the likes of Steve Blum and Robert Patrick delivering the most deadpan of deliveries. The puzzles are...infamous to say the least and in truth one or two of them could have been much better designed. I'll give you a hint for free, the head of the skeleton is not meant to be on the top left, but bottom right.

Regardless, I say go ahead if you love LucasArts' work, and try out this gem from the past that, while is a little rough around the edges and is perhaps at the lower end of their library, is nevertheless one worthy of playing if you are a fan of such games.
