Kickstarter Update

Unity remake is chugging along. It's a proving to be very difficult. Harder than making it from scratch. We're plugging along. Lost half of the team, so we're moving a lot slower than we planned.

Here is the update I posted on kick-starter than explained things in a bit more detail (please excuse non-steam- relevant info) :

First things first is I've recently found out that some of you did not receive your rewards in the mail.

If you didn't please email me and let me know so I can fix this promptly.

So the few people who worked on Two Brothers originally jumped ship so it's now just me, Andrew, and Ian working on remaking it in Unity.

It's tough as we had to learn an entirely new program and work flow, so I want to sincerely apologize for how long it's taking.

We are actively working on the game but it's honestly harder to remake than it was to make the first time as now we are glaring aware of all the flaws.

Additional we have to change some of the content drastically as former team members have requested their content removed from the game.

But that's the reality of it and we soldier on.

I'm sorry if you were disappointed with the original project. I'm sorry if it didn't live up to your expectations.

It was our first game and we are proud of our effort despite the obvious bugs and problems it has. I'm rethinking our approach to the whole thing to try and streamline it. (No, not another kickstarter)

I'd like to address the fact that we are also working on another game, YIIK. I know some people wonder why we aren't devoting full time to TB, but the truth is we have bills to pay and a broken game doesn't pay them. So we took on work so that we wouldn't starve.

We are working on the Unity remake, we are just terrible at keeping people up to date. The issue with making a kickstarter game is there is great reward to everyone involved, you, and me.

If I mess up, I'm stuck working on something forever until everyone is happy because you paid to have it made. You stuck with a game you aren't happy with and a developer who is learning and moving slowly on a complete 100% remake.

Sadly mmf2 doesn't port easily to unity so it has to be a remake.

That's the truth and where we stand. I'm sorry for keeping you waiting and if I let you down.

“...The soundtrack for Two Brothers is elaborate and enchanting. It’s a slow burn that’s going to take a long time for you to fully digest, but if you like game soundtracks, I’d be hard pressed to offer you a better one. Full of original content, and drawing from the most memorable games of previous generations, it will give other composers something to aim for when they score their companies next title.”
KBMOD

“Two Brothers is a wonderful retro-inspired game with an interesting concept and solid core gameplay underneath it all so it isn’t just another love letter to the past that offers nothing else but nostalgia.”
Gamecepticon

“Between the great story, amazing music, and fascinating world, I’d definitely recommend players to check out Two Brothers. While there are certainly some problems with the game, there’s a lot here to enjoy you’ll be hard-pressed to find elsewhere.”

Об этой игре

Two Brothers is an Action Adventure game that features a classic Gameboy aesthetic.
Roy Guarder, inventor, scientist, and philosopher, is on an expedition to discover the origins of life. This quest has brought him to "The Cursed Lands," a stretch of land so dangerous and shrouded in mystery that it hasn't been explored in over 700 years. When Roy finds what he's looking for, he is met with a terrible fate. Roy no longer finds himself a living man. He is greeted with a world of colors he never believed could have existed! One obsession leads to another and Roy begins to walk the line of life and death - sometimes intentionally ending his own life - just so he can see this land of beauty and color again.

But something is strange: Why is Roy the only man who can cross so easily between the worlds of the living and the dead? What has given him this unique ability? How will he reconcile the existence of an afterlife he never believed could even exist?
▪ Explore a vast non-linear world and story with multiple endings, and deep side quests!
▪ Take the game world from black and white 8bit to full color 16bit!

What makes Two Brothers unique:

Two Brothers takes a long hard look at death in video games... when the player is killed in combat or triggers a deadly trap, instead of being greeted a familiar GAMEOVER screen, the player finds himself in what we call the "Afterlife Hub".
This realm of the dead is a colorful and mysterious place where the player can explore, find clues, and interact with characters who have passed on in the games story... sometimes even bringing some of them back from the dead.
When the player wants to return to gameplay, they can jump from the edge of the heavens and get back in to the action and exploration!
This mechanic is vital to the gameplay, as sometimes interacting with the dead is just as important as interacting with the living... this feature often requires the player intentionally ending their session in a game over, just to cross over to the other side.

I really wanted to enjoy "Two Brothers," but damned if the game wasn't too buggy to complete. It's a real shame, too, because the game had a lot of potential to be a fun, epic adventure with a lot of wonderful retro-gaming throwbacks in it, but there were far too many places where your main obstacle/enemy in the game was its own poor design. Around three hours into the game, I reached a dungeon that was so messed up that I was unable to progress any further without the game crashing, and I tried to get through it on two separate computers with no luck.

The story, though, is what made me press on as far as I did, because I really liked the idea of a world without color where the character was discovering what colors actually were in the first place. The game also plays with the idea of life and death, both in a metaphysical/philosophical way, but also in terms of being a character in a game that has the ability to come back to life and where death had little permanent meaning to it.

The game borrows a lot from the Zelda series, as well as titles on the monochrome Game Boy, and the soundtrack is really good too. It's just too bad that this fun, quirky adventure is a game that is barely playable, and almost certainly is unfinishable.

From a 0 to 10, where 5 is an "average" score, this game gets a rare rating of:

If you want to play an unforgettable game that is like no other, then don't let the bugs scare you away from Two Brothers. This game is a heartfelt love letter to the 8- and 16-bit games of the 1990's. If you didn't grow up with these sorts of games, then I can understand how this must seem unplayable. But if you're like me, you've had the family dog crash your NES during a final boss fight, you've turned on games you'd beaten dozens of times only to be greeted by mysterious numbers and glyphs that you could only assume were broadcasts from space, and you've sacrificed at least one Pokemon Red/Blue cartridge trying to command the eldrich power of Missingno. The bugs in Two Brothers weren't enough to stop me, and they won't stop you.

The obvious comparison is with Zelda, but I found that the graphics, the combat, and most of all the character-centered and highly pervasive story reminded me more of James Bond: 007 for the Game Boy. The game's unusual game over mechanic is only one of the ways the designers have used old video game mechanics to pull the player into Roy Guardner's fragile and rapidly disintegrating reality.

The glitches are everything they're said to be: Frustrating, frequent, and not at all part of the game's charm. They will interrupt the game, set you back, and possibly force you to restart altogether. Combat is also rather strange, although it's something you can eventually "grow into". One of the biggest disappointments for me personally was that the game provides a diverse array of fun looking weapons, but I wound up having to stick to the few that were reliable. I remember one in particular, an awesome scythe with an absolutely gorgeous animation that summoned little dead fellows to help me out, which I was dying to use but had to give up because I couldn't figure out how to make it hit anything.

Playing Two Brothers was like watching Indiana Jones take on all the old games from my childhood. I can't wait to see what these guys can come out with next.

Story: Some philosopher is looking for something. Even the store page description is incomplete.

Gameplay: Never got the chance to play. Wish I could.

Sound: Like it came from a gameboy.

Graphics: The original gameboy would be proud.

Technical: Filled with glitches. Starting glitch crashes my stuff repeatedly.

Final Verdict: Don't touch this with a 10 foot pole. I do not recommend

I've tried to play this several times since I purchased it, but the bugs just make it impossible. The game locks up often in some areas requiring a restart. They made the bizarre decision to have your inventory available only when you have a particular party member with you, but he frequently leaves. Combat is rough to say the least. Controller support is "partial" at best and has to be reselected every time you start up. Dialog/text stays on screen until new dialog comes up. Meaning your conversations stay around long after they're over. This obscures a portion of the world at all times. The whole experience feels unpolished.

It's been out for over 2 years so I'd expect these glaring issues to have been patched by now. I don't like reviewing a game that I haven't finished, but I just have to give up on this one. Don't waste your money.

A buggy mess plain and simple. I had to fix it so I could play in anything besides a WAY too small resolution, then the intro broke, then after trying to bring the water jug on a girl's head to a fish man and winding up feeding her to him (Or was that just another bug?) I got stuck in an endless loop talking to an NPC.

Dialogue options apear to be limited to "happy face", "frowny face", and "tears". Instantly crashes when resized in any way, and so consistently that it appears to be intentional. Enjoy playing a postage stamp on your battlestation. Then again that may be a feature, so that it doesn't distract from watching Twitch.

I could barely play the 12 minutes that I got due to the fact that the game starts in this 320x240 resolution and everything is too small. And if you resize the window, the game crashes. So yeah, big "no" for me.

However, the dev IS remaking the game and releasing it for free to owners of the original. So maybe there's some promise there.

The game is broken. In my short experience with this game I had fumbled with setting up the window, messed with the controls, started the game outside of the level where I could walk around, collision with walls is wonky, broken tuturial, and slow dialog text.

They are remaking the game with a different engine which shows promise, but according to one of their most recent project updates they announced that levels are now grid based instead of whatever they did before. So apparantly their game, featuring tile graphics, did not have a grid. I must assume these guys are not common programmers.

Their vision is interesting, the graphics are cool and are what you imagined the world to look like back in the days of the gameboy. I want to take a look at the game when the unity version comes out but do not buy this right now.

EDIT: The remake is called Chromphore and should come out this month. Free for owners of Two Brothers. Let us hope their learned how to program.

Very, very clever Zelda-like game. Tells a good story while affectionately poking fun at older games and using the pseudo-GB format to do some interesting things. Decent length so far, gameplay is pretty good (if "clunky" much like older games often would be), and the music's great. Unfortunately, it seems to have a fair number of glitches, mostly related to collision detection; just be careful and consider backing up your saves every once in a while. (The game autosaves very frequently, so don't worry about losing progress if you have to restart it.)

I so want to recommend this, but I can't quite do it.

This game is a love letter to classic 8-bit gaming, and more specifically, the Game Boy. While the game plays most similar to The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening, it also has references to Pokemon and Final Fantasy. Since the Game Boy was one of my first gaming loves, and Link's Awakening my favorite title on the system, the game just hit me hard with its nostalgia hammer.

The story has some very profound, and dare I say it, vaguely religious themes, at least what I played of it so far. The writing is easily the game's strongest aspect. It's full of refernces to classic games, but it also contains a great deal of pathos and questions about death, science vs faith, and the afterlife. The soundtrack is good as well.

But this thing has more bugs than the last two Bethesda games combined, and even compared to the games it tries to emulate, it actually falls short technically. It plays in an extremely tiny window, and pressing the Escape button quits the game entirely instead of pausing it. You have to be very careful when playing this game lest you run into glitches. And that's too bad, because everything about this game shows great promise.

There's a lot of bugs, which is sad because I like the story and the world design. The combat system is boring and usually it seems like buttom smashing is more efficient than actual strategy. I've got stuck in moving walls and I've been stuck forever in mid air because some rats were standing under me and I couldn't fall all the way down from a ledge. Some graphics layers are in wrong places. The water animations only work in places where there are splashes, otherwise it's the regular walking animation. There seems to be no other way to get back to main menu than to restart the game.

Anyway, I hope they fix all this. Other than the bugs, I really like it. Seems like they forgot to playtest it completely.

This review has spoilers.

This game was so bad that I decided to write my first review.

I played for about twenty minutes, and then it froze. In that time I got through the prelude and finished the first dungeon and fetch quest. To be honest, I nearly dropped it when Loving Wife died moments after her simpery and bland introduction, towards the end of the tutorial. Sluggish text cannot be skipped. UI design, even in the configuration menus at the start of the game, is poor. Conversations awkwardly remain on-screen even after you have moved to a different room, leaving no context for the hanging text. Maps are too large and often leave you wandering through a featureless landscape with nothing of interest to look at on-screen, scrolling for page after page. Other design issues, such as unfair/pointless traps, make the gameplay boring.

For me, the storytelling didn't work very well, either. From the first looks of it, the world is pretty interesting--but incoherent. Typos abound. Long sections of backstory are delivered with little context, first in a "meet-the-characters" way reminiscent of good old Red/Blue Pokemon, and later in long blurbs that seem more like a poorly-kerned emotive flash game or visual novel.

An interesting fact is that when it comes to game writing, the limitations of the user interface play a crucial role. The writer needs to plan for line breaks so that moving to the next text window is a pleasure, cutting out as many words as possible to keep the whole message on one screen and so that clauses are not split.

To make a long story short: Two Brothers, although individual elements are very appealing and promise something great to come, is riddled with and has serious structural flaws, still has game-breaking bugs, and suffers from poor design in general. This is not a good game. Do not buy it at any cost. I sincerely appreciate the work that the developers put into it, and wish them well with their next game. The graphics look nice, he indie market is hard. That said, $15 is an unacceptable price for a game with so many bugs and so little overall polish.

First run ended after playing the tutorial, then jumping into the actual game, only to find myself outside of the map, wandering around until an event triggered and the game locked up.

Second run ended when I found out that ESC instantly closes the game.

Third run ended when I skipped the tutorial, went right into the game and was unable to move at all.

A game Obsidian would be proud of.

Oh, brother. This is perhaps a great game that shows we've come a long way from the 8-bit world of Space Invaders and Pong. Two Brothers pays homage to all the great games of yesteryear and combines that with modern surprises.

The story is definitely the game's best feature. Growing up as a 90's kid, death in a video game was a great deal of annoyance and frustration. Two Brothers took that notion and completely deconstructed it and shaped into a robust mechanism that changes everything we've known about death in gameplay. Everything. The budding geniuses at AckkStudios reminds us perhaps how we can deal and relate to death, and how we cope with losing someone important to us. The game does so with a great amount of light heartedness and bittersweet quality that remind us of days long gone through the main character who, might I dare say, is quite the gentleman of fortune.

The gameplay is somewhat of a thank you gift to gamers from the past decades who are familiar with the top-down structure of classic Zelda and Sword of Mana. You're in for quite a treat there.

The soundtrack is also quite wonderful and sets the bar high as it draws on inspiration from the classical music to metal to the legendary scores of Nobuo Uematsu.

However, the game isn't without flaws. There were bugs at launch, but the team at AckkStudios has been quite receptive to consumer feedback and is constantly working to correct glitches with rapid updates and fast bug support. Just reminiscing a bit, but who remembers Nintendo's game help hotline? That's pretty much AckkStudios's Facebook Page.

With bittersweet sentimentality, the verdict is that Two Brothers features graphics lush with fond memories and homages, a great soundtrack, and quite a treat in gameplay. Two Brothers gives all its love to games long ago and to games in days to come. This was a game worth waiting for.

I really wanted to give a thumbs up to this game.

As far as I´ve been able to play, it has some very great things: The retro feel is great (even if the music gets a bit annoying). The story is very original and interesting, the characters and backgrounds are cute and detailed, more detailed than they would have been in Gameboy. The autosave feature is good, but...

...there´s no other way to save and I haven´t been able to work out how to even save in a different slot (my guess is it can´t be done unless you start a new game in that new slot). This would not be much of a problem if the game was flawless in its programming, but as others have reported, it isn´t. There are conversation loops you can´t end, the senistivity of the loading file is erratic (I sometimes have to hit the key more than once for it to acknowledge). On my firts try in the game, after a couple of days playing, I tried to load the file but nothing happened. I tried other keys and eventually had to restart the game, which was not nice. The dialogues are good but quite long, so going through things I had already been through a couple of days ago was rather a joykill. So off I go on round two. I come across some bugs (like not being able to skip the storyteller unless I agree to listen to him) and eventually I enter someplace I seems I shouldn´t have entered (not that there was any restriction as in other areas, where it tells you you should first do this or that). I meet Celia, a flying thing of some kind) who embarks me in a kind of quest, throws me in a dungeon to help her in a trial. That wouldn´t be too bad, except for the fact I can´t get out. Apparently I am missing an item, I can´t move forward, I can´t go back to the previous area. Because of the autosave function, the last saved file is already in this place. I haven´t been able to find a walkthrough to even know if I can get out or not, but I am not looking forward to starting the game again.

This game would be awesome if it were fixed. If you are very patient you should either wait for that to happen (if it happens), or give it a try and accept the fact you might be having to restart often. Despite its virtues and its potential, as it stands I couldn´t really recommend this game. A shame.
