Season's greetings, WARMACHINE: Tactics Fans! The team at WhiteMoon Dreams has been hard at work to bring some great new improvements to the game. Here's the exciting news, straight from the studio:

Here is what is coming out with the upcoming patch, scheduled to release on December 15th :

4.10 Engine Integration-4.10 engine integration is largely bug fixes, especially for Mac. Moving forward this will allow us to create Mac builds much faster and with fewer issues. You may see some more optimizations on your computer depending on your system.

Trainyard Map-Brand new Trainyard map.

New Retribution and Mercenaries Units-All Kickstarter backers will receive 7 brand new units for free. This will bring up the numbers for Mercenaries and Retribution players so that they are evenly matched with the main 4 factions. Even though these units were not part of the Kickstarter, you still receive them for free as our thanks for being part of the community. Anyone who has purchased any Retribution or Mercenaries DLC will also receive these units for free. Units include: Rahn, Ravyn, Drake, Ashlynn, Mage Hunter Strike Force, Vanguard and Nomad. You will not need a DLC code to unlock these units. They will be added to your account automatically.

Continued VFX and Optimization Improvements-Tons of new VFX and continued bug fixes and optimization.

Dynamic Tutorial- Educating new players is the name of the game. We have built a dynamic tutorial tool, which will pop up helpful information about a tactic when a player encounters it for the first time in game. There are so many hidden rules and deep tactics within WARMACHINE: Tactics, that it creates a very steep learning curve. Now, if a player encounters an unusual rule for the first time (such as Stealth), a dialogue window will pop up that explains what they are seeing in real time. Players can choose to dismiss it (it was pop up again next time they encounter it), never show this specific dialogue again, or not show any tooltips ever (for you players who already know the ins and outs of the game). We will continue to add new tooltips every patch, making the learning experience easier and more seamless for everyone. If you have a friend you have been wanting to teach WARMACHINE: Tactics, now is the perfect time.

Camera Improvements-Based on your feedback, we have removed the Free Cam option and improved the Default Camera. There are tons of options for you to customize your camera to your liking. Now it responds better to input, environmental collision, and has much smoother, more natural controls. Please continue to give us any feedback about the camera improvements.

AI Improvements-The first round of AI improvements for single player and skirmish is here! This will only continue as we build toward Dark Seduction next year. AI now more intelligently deploys, allocates focus, and chooses whether to commit to a ranged or melee attack. You should see AI improvements with every patch moving forward.

Dynamic Splash Screen-The splash screen can now be updated independently from the game, which means more current and up to date news, including sales, articles, events, community features, and contests.

Physical Disk-The physical disk is just about ready to be sent off for manufacturing. We wanted to be sure the build that was put on the physical disk was as bug-free and feature complete as possible, and we figured that everyone would want that to include the latest Mercenaries and Retribution units. Once this patch is completed, we will send off the build to the manufacturer – then it’s just a quick turnaround time while artwork is made and the DVDs are printed before they are out the door to you. The installer is Steam based, but you do NOT need to be connected to Steam in order to play the offline content. You WILL need a Steam account if you want to play the online multiplayer content. You can also download any updates by connecting to Steam. This DVD will only work for 64bit PCs, but if you are a Mac or 32bit user, we will have an online hosted installer for you.

(We'll keep you updated on the delivery timeline once we are given that information from the DVD manufacturer.)

More to come in the weeks and months ahead!

All the best to you during this season of thanks,
Matt Wilson

“Overall, Warmachine: Tactics early access is a blast to play for new initiates or grizzled adepts alike. For those already introduced to the tabletop game, they will find an excellent translation of the miniature combat, but now with living, breathing characters destroying each other as opposed to being put back in their foam. Those that have not yet joined into the geekcraft of wargaming will find an enjoyable, challenging player-on-player experience that is pleasing to the ear and the eye alike.”
4/5 – Nerd Reactor

“Gameplay, overall, in Warmachine Tactics is a blast. It’s not without its minor flaws, but getting to get into the nitty gritty of each unit and doing cool things like combined attacks, casting spells with your warcaster, or slamming your opponent to the ground with a warjack are sheer joy.”
The Dread Gazebo

I know I don't trust most reviews that are all good or all bad, but honestly after giving it way more then a fighting chance it has failed on every level. The interface is the opposite of intuitive and the animations are off-label PS2 at best. I'm amazed with how well funded it was on kickstarter we have what we've been given. This is the first time I saw fit to write a review, but honestly with the Privateer Press, kickstarter AND early access money there is no excuse for this wonky old-school indie game feeling slop.

It was so simple: Make Warmachine but playable on PC. The game mechanics were already laid out. What we got is a convoluted mess. Do not buy this game.

With this game, I tried. Really did. Actions were clunky at times, sure, whatever, I can deal. Units performed completely randomly at times, that was anoying, but in keeping with the tabletop to PC feel of the thing. Not a AAA title, but it never claimed to be. It was building up to a decent game, pieces at a time. There were annoying parts fixed, like global spells lens flare-ing the screen un-playable for a small buff, that were fixed. Generally it looked like a nice game without the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ish nature of some people who shall not be na-*cough*EA*cough*-med.

Then a funny thing happened with the Mercenaries faction. It was originally availiable to play with the standard game. Then it was shoved ceremoniously behind a DLC paywall. Same with the Retribution. And there's so much of it. For the price of the DLC and the game itself, I can put together two, maybe three physical armies on the cheap. Anyone who knows about how expensive miniature wargames are, knows that this is ridiculous.

This could have been a nice cheap entry point to the physical game for some, but it's not anymore. Could have been a nice turn based strategy for others, but with two of the factions locked out of the multiplayer and a bluh campaign, it's not. It could have had a great story for the Iron Kingdoms, a setting oozing with so much badass flowing through it's rivers that even the goblins wear shades and walk calmly away from explosions, but it wasn't. Not the worst story, but could have been better.

Sorry, and this saddens me to say, but I cannot reccomend this game.

tldr; Don't buy it, DLC is too much for too little, doesn't do enough with what it has.

One of the few games that after just a couple of days playing I'm wondering how to get my money back.

Turns are slow. Computer units are in god mode doing massive damage and not taking hits 50% of the time (And that's being generous). Palyer units are cardboard. Yup, three missions in and I am loathing the "Hey! Watch the opening screen shot... again...and again.. and again..." After dying/losing to something like, "You must keep unit Fred alive" and watching the computer A.I. swarm poor unit Fred under sooo many times. (Or, if there's more than one Fred to keep alive, they simply swarm the first Fred they get to)

As a backer of the Kickstarter, I'm very disappointed in this game. I have a 6-core 3.5Ghz processor, and while my graphics card isn't all that hot, it is an Nvidia gaming card... and this is not a real-time FPS. It's a table-top game with "flavor" animations... most of the game, very little on the screen is moving, yet I have to turn the video settings way down to keep the audio from being choppy, and I still get terrible frame rates. There is no reason a game that is presenting a mostly-still image should get such terrible performance, even with a cheap video card. I was really surprised to see the game released and it still be hardly any better when I tried it out shortly after it went into beta. The developers shouldn't have started working on DLC, they should be working on fixing the problems with the game.

As others have noted, the UI is very clunky, and the number of times I move a unit to the wrong location because the UI interpreted my click wierdly is annoying (and I've only played 4 hours!), and accidentally entering melee with a unit you meant to shoot at can mean the difference between winning and losing a battle. The camera is difficult to maneuver, it's hard to find all your foes (you can't see the mini-map during focus allocation), and it's easy to lose track of active enemy units among all the dead enemies and visual clutter.

This game had lots of potential, and it could still be fixed... I'm just afraid that the developers don't see the problems here.

The reproduction of the tabletop game is, as far as I've seen, rather good. If you enjoy Warmachine on the tabletop and don't get to play enough, and you can put up with a poorly made game, it might be worth it.
