SteamWorld Dig is a very charming game about a robot digging for treasures in a Wild West scenario. The gameplay is an interesting mix of digging, platforming, some light puzzling and uncovering secrets while fighting some enemies here and there. One thing this game does really well is offering new gameplay elements at exactly the right times, keeping itself from getting stale. Over time you can unlock new abilities, which you can also upgrade that make the digging, traversing through the tunnels and fighting easier and more fun. The level design for some areas differs considerably from the rest, which results in quite a few surprises along the way. My first playthrough took me about 10 hours, but the game can apparently be completed in less than 2 ½ hours according to one of the achievements, but that requires some serious rushing, which I'm personally not a fan of.

In conclusion: I had a great time with this game and highly recommend it!

Steamworld Dig is a delightful little action/platforming/mining game with solid controls, good pacing, and a charming art style. Dig for ores, avoid (or destroy) obstacles, upgrade your tools and abilities, and discover what's waiting at the bottom of the world. It starts off simply, but as you become stronger and better equipped, you'll find the environment and enemies ready to keep you on your toes. It never becomes overly challenging, though, nor does it wear out its welcome. I felt the 9 hours it took me to complete was just right, and I can definitely see playing through again some day to try to earn the achievements that I missed.

In the meantime... bring on Steamworld Heist!

SteamWorld Dig was, on the whole, a fun experience. While it only clocked about 4-5 hours, I had fun the entire time, and had difficulty putting it down. That in and of itself is worth a recommendation, as my gaming attention span is difficult to hold. But I digress.

The gameplay boils down to, well, digging and exploration. If you don't particularly value exploration and collection, I don't think this game is right for you. Digging to new depths, collecting Ore to sell, and gaining valueable upgrades is most of what you'll be doing.

The graphics are very pleasant; it has a distinct, vibrant aesthetic that I very much enjoyed.

However...

- Feels short (~4 hours). Left me longing for more game.
- Combat was somewhat frustrating. Thankfully, it's not to frequent.
- Gameplay is somewhat tedious, with digging and returning to town to replenish light / looking to replenish resources.

Still, overall I enjoyed the game, especially considering I got it in a $1 Humble Bundle. The recommendation is contingent if you enjoy these types of games, however. I think I'd rate it as a 7.5/10.

This game made the fundamental mistake that I see rather often. It attempted to create a fusion of several great games and genres, but did so without a core comprehension of what made those games good in the first place. The gameplay can be split into three aspects.

The first is the town area, where you can buy upgrades and talk to people. That's about it. To be fair, not much more can be expected out of a town area in a game with only a few hours of gameplay. But you may very well come to hate this town as you keep having to return over and over again.

The second aspect are the caves beneath the town. Have you ever played Minecraft or Terraria and thought, "Man, I love digging through solid walls for extended periods of time!"? If so, this might be the game for you. Otherwise...
There are things to be found in the caves, yes. However, all of the major things you /need/ to find are thrown right into your face so you don't miss them. On top of that it's just enemies, pockets of space, and ore. Speaking of ore, the game has a brilliant way of artificially extending its length: only letting you carry three stacks of an ore at once. I don't really see any good reason for this besides forcing you to go back up to the surface sometimes. Which of course involves backtracking all the way up the shaft you've dug down up to the last warp point to the surface. Other than that occasionally interrupting the game flow (and using the word "occasionally" is being generous), it's nothing but digging around looking for ores and then digging downwards to continue with the game. Oh, and did I mention that the better digging tools you get all have limited fuel? So you'll need to backtrack for that too. This whole major aspect of the game feels incredibly pointless and like it's designed to take way longer than it needs to.

The final aspect of the game are the special challenge caves you find along the way. These are certainly the best part of the game, but they're dragged down by the main cave. If the main cave didn't exist and the engine was truly made for a platformer with puzzle aspects rather than what it is, they would likely play a lot better. The most apparent example is enemies. Combat just does not play out very well because all of your "weapons" are digging tools. I think if the entire game consisted of gameplay like in these caves and if the engine was made to reflect that then the game would certainly have a lot of potential. But as is? Eh.....

SteamWorld is fun, but I'm not convinced it has enough substance to keep the player hooked. It didn't for me, at least. It's pretty and put together well and everything, it just doesn't have enough material in it. In my opinion.
I would recommend it, but only if you really like the genre. Otherwise, well... I can't say I do.

I've played through to the completion of the game, took about 9 hours, which is not bad considering the price.

Pros: Great exploration game. Good platforming.

Cons: Only one boss battle, so not a lot of conflict. Mining gets repetitive.

A really pleasant, well-crafted game. It needs a little bit of thinking and planning, and doesn't feature that much quick action in contrast with e.g. Mark of the Ninja. Excellent.

Also, the bots are cute. :3

Short but sweet. You can complete the game in one day, even if you don't rush.

It is also not that fun to play after you beat the main story.

Many achievements can be impossible to get, requiring you to replay the game from scratch. There's no New Game Plus.

Summary: Buy it on sale. You don't get many hours out of this one.

This game is really fun if you're into exploring and upgrading; however, it's one of those games that you can complete in one sitting so be sure to make the most out of your first playthrough! The Soundtrack is pretty enjoyable and the steampunk/western art style is very pleasing to look at. Totally worth it for the experience.
