Want more SteamWorld games? You're in luck!

Howdy, everyone!

I'm Julius, the community manager at Image & Form Games (makers of SteamWorld Dig). Ever since we released SteamWorld Dig, many of you have been asking for more games set in SteamWorld. Today we answer your player prayers!

We just released SteamWorld Heist, the follow-up to SteamWorld Dig. It's a space adventure set in a post-apocalyptic SteamWorld. You see, a cataclysmic event of earth-shattering proportions has forced the robots out to space! It's a robot-eat-robot world out there and resources are slim. Many steambots have turned to space piracy in order to survive, and you're one of them!

As the captain you will command a steam-driven pirate crew in a series of epic tactical shootouts. Inspired by classics like XCOM and Worms, SteamWorld Heist is turn-based strategy with a twist: You manually aim the guns of your robots, allowing for insane skill shots and bullet-bouncing action!

What do players think?

If you enjoyed Dig we're sure you'll get drawn in by the atmosphere and gameplay loop offered by SteamWorld Heist. Critics love it, as the game's sitting comfortably at 86/100 on Metacritic. But let's hear it from the Steam user reviews:

"This game is perfect. Literally perfect." – Zaphnod

"Pirate robots in space who live for hats. Awesome." – FartHoofer1227

"Firefly with robots and hats. I like it." – CNN

Will you give SteamWorld Heist a try?

Nice lighthearted Western/Steam-robit game. Fairly easy, but it hooks you in with it's upgrade system and exploration.

Fun little game! Don't expect too much from it and you will be quite pleased.
There are some slight Metroidvania (gear-gate) mechanics, but nothing too deep character-building-wise.
I took my time with my playthrough, so it IS a bit short. I mostly played it to get some backstory for Steamworld Heist, which is A M A Z I N G !

The spritual successor to Super Motherload meets every Spaghetti western ever made. A fantastic platformer with an addictive gameplay loop and non-sensical original theme that puts similar 'mining games' like Terraria to shame.

You play a steam driven mining robot in this 2D platformer with metroidvania aspirations. You return to the wild west steam punk town populated by robots after your uncle dies in the mine. You have to dig deeper to discover what happened. Along the way, you receive upgrades through a variety of rooms that branch off from the main shaft. You gather a variety of ores to sell back to the town in exchange for upgrades or to purchase quick transportation back to the surface. Pretty engaging risk vs reward system as you try to balance getting more ores and, well, not dying. You eventually are able to unlock areas with new drills and powers. It is a quick campaign, you are able to finish it in 5 or 6 hours. However, it does charm in its art direction and tight controls. I do recommend using a controller.

Pros:
-Addicting gameplay with tight controls
-Humorous cast of characters, funny easter eggs

Cons:
-Short campaign

I played this on Ubuntu 16.04.

The game is quite fun and gives around seven hours of gameplay but only if you take it slow and want to explorer everything. This is basically the old “Motherlode” game from miniclip.com as you just go deeper and deeper while mining everything you find. The added twist here are the explorable caves which will then require you to solve a puzzle, which are really the fun part of the game as going down in a straight line does get a bit boring after a while. Art style is really well done as are the different characters and their dialogue. Game is best played by using a controller, although this isn't natively supported. I used a freeware program like Joy To Key to bind the input of my controller to the keybindigs of the game after which it played much better. The biggest negative about this game was the disappointing end boss, really easy and just lazy game design.

Overall I would only recommend buying this game if it is on sale as it lacks a satisfying amount of playable hours.

SteamWorld Dig an exploration based platformer merging games such as Dig Dug\Mr Driller, Minecraft\Terraria, light Spelunky and some light Metroidvania into one casual yet enjoyable package. Your main objective is to dig, dig until you clear area (3 total) and find out what's been happening to the world beneath the mines. You'll also be able to sell off any ore\gems you excavated in order to upgrade your equipment.

Pros
+ Great controls, though not as tight as I'd like it but it doesn't screw you over either
+ Lovely hand drawn\vector based graphics
+ The western themed soundtrack is catchy
+ The side room puzzles break up the monotony of digging
+ Runs smoothly no performance hiccups or bugs to be found
+ Nice casual platformer which is a nice surprise
+ Minor risk reward scenarios of whether to continue into a new area while underpowered

Cons
- Combat is not really a thing, there are enemies you can engage in combat but you'll most assuredly take damage as you have to stand in place while attacking

Irritations
+/- Could get repetitive as you're digging, selling ore and upgrading your equipment the majority of the time
+/- Sometimes you overshoot some platforms as your jumps have a slight arc regardless of whether you're moving or not
+/- The game's about 5hr long depending on deaths and maybe too short for others but it's perfect for me

Verdict
This came as a surprise to me but I actually love this game, it's such a simple game really and that's great. Even though the game's fun, some may be put off by the simple premise of dig, collect ore\gems, return to the surface to sell ore\gems, upgrade gear, return to the mines rinse and repeat. While it is short, I found this title to be highly enjoyable from it's story to the western music playing in the background.

SteamWorld Dig is a fairly casual game. It is a good way to waste an hour here or there. You play Rusty, a steam powered robot who comes back to his hometown (population 3) to find out what happened to his father. Rusty's father was a miner and so down, down, down you go. Along the way you defeat critters (yes, there are dynamite totin' zombies, along with brutes who throw bottles of booze at you called "Boozers" instead of Bruisers) and dig up minerals to sell. With the gold you acquire you can upgrade your equipment. Essentially, you must upgrade your equipment because the deeper you go, the more damage you must do to the rocks to bust them up.

There are three levels to the mine, and in each of the three levels there are three special caves you must enter in order to get equipment to survive the next section of the mine. There are also some bonus caves that are more "puzzley" containing high value minerals or orbs (needed along with gold for some upgrades).

As I said, this is a casual game. It isn't too difficult. If you die, you loose 50% of your gold and get repaired in town. Although there are a couple of achievements you can get if you finish the entire game without dieing.

The game looks nice. The three environments are distinct and have their own character. It reminds me of an app called Gem Miner, but with more polish. The game seems like it would be repetitive - bust rocks for a path, grab minerals, sell them and repeat - it is but still holds your attention.

SteamWorld Dig is one of the later, but more polished games to come out featuring an overworld hub and digging to the bottom in search of incrementally better gear and loot...I guess you could call the genre "Mini-Minecraft". From the looks of it, this one is not procedurally generated...or if it is, it's kept at a bare minimum. (screenshots of the first area in two separate save slots only differ in parallax positioning) It runs similar to some of the ones you might have seen on XBL Indie in the early 2010s: You have an overworld hub which grows as your quest progresses, you go down different sub-strata (which are marked on the minimap) and eventually you reach two different areas. There's also a number of challenge rooms where you can find upgrades and rare minerals, but most inventory items are disabled.

Gameplay is decent, but keep in mind that it's slower paced than most games in the genre. Dirt and rocks take longer to destroy when you cross into the lower substrata and levels, even though their appearance doesn't change much throughout the game. To put it into context, dirt at the bottom of the last level takes 4 hits to destroy with the most powerful pickaxe. I get that it's meant to be one of those low-stress zen games, but it might be a little repetitive for some peoples' tastes. There's also a lot of backtracking caused by your tiny inventory -- at most you can only carry up to 16 small minerals, assuming they match perfectly in stacks of 4. I found this to be a poor design choice as a 5 hour playthrough can easily contain close to an hour of backtracking. You can by upgrades, but these upgrades come a bit slowly and detract from pickaxe upgrades which are also desperately needed. Teleporters also help alleviate this, but they cost 3 of a rare currency -- another questionable decision because both rare and common currency are finite. There's no technical reason to make an item that increases the game's enjoyability so hard to get.

In spite of these complaints, the positives outweigh the negatives.

Controls are solid, though you start out pretty weak...even by the standards of the genre. One tile high jump, slow movement speed, and fall damage that doesn't really befit a robot protagonist. This is one of those games where it's not until halfway that the controls on their own become fun to mess around with. My only complaint here is they took too long to give us the good stuff.

The graphics are definitely its strongest point. The animations are solid, the characters are unique and detailed, while the backgrounds and enemy models really tell a story on their own. They tell you more about the world's history than the characters do. All graphics are at least 1080p.

The sound is nice, but the music gets repetitive. The loops are fairly short and each level has only one tune. I think it's a total of 6 tunes: Intro, overworld, levels 1-3, and the final boss -- all quality pieces, just not really enough to carry a 3-5 hour game.

All in all, a decent entry for the genre.

Digging deep, getting rich and discovering mysteries.

7/10

Worth the price?:For what the game is and having some similar free games online, buy on sale.

PROS:
-Smooth controls makes platforming easy
-Clean graphics
-Enjoyable puzzle rooms that are a good break from just digging straight down
-Tons of upgrades to unlock and buy

CONS:
-Layers can get very repetitive of just digging, return to surface to sell, repeat
-The end area was far to overwhelming and crowded
-Forgetting to buy a portal and having to backtrack a HUGE distance
-Upgrades don't change the player visually

For a mining game this is a very good one, lots of things to mine and lots of things to upgrade. This game is not randomly generated like most would think for a mining game, giving it no replay value. SteamWorld Dig has an interesting plot that is really the only motivation to keep digging after a while, I found myself trying to rush through sections near the end simply to carry on with the story cause I was very bored of digging. Overall was a great little game and worth trying if it is on sale. Happy digging!

While I was rather sceptical at first, Steamworld Dig proved to become a marvellous journey I repeated several times. The controls are spot on and very accurate, mechanics feel right and the game lets you get into a flow of making your way through your own dug tunnels after a while. At no point does the game feel dragged out, new worlds open exactly at the time you get used to the last one. Progression is quick without the game being short, it's easy to learn and fun to master and this has practically become my currently favourite platformer over night.

Very fun. Lagless. Great strategy, puzzles, and mining. Its a mix of Minecraft, Terraria, and Shovel Knight. I got it for $2.49 during the 2016 summer sale. I's spend way more on it. I wish i had gotten it sooner.
