“Each time the protagonist dies, you find yourself coming back with a vengeance, determined to try a new strategy, a different approach to her upbringing. It's borderline addictive. It's also likely to make a monster out of you. By the end of my first successful playthrough, I had summarily butchered everyone who even thought about looking at us funny, forced the princess into a continuous state of docility and lied my way through every social encounter possible. Was it evil? Yes. Was it glorious? Definitely.”

“Somehow it never occurred to my princess, whom I’d lovingly crafted into a tense, paranoid warlord, that she shouldn’t empty a box of mysterious mailcandy into her mouth. You would think studying poison and espionage would have saved me from this espionage poison, but instead, a list of other skills, skills I never studied, princess skills, were key to avoiding this fate. I guess that’s the lesson: you can’t build a successful Arya without adding a little Sansa.”

“If you’re the sort who can sink your teeth into a full afternoon of tabletop strategy, you’ll be happy here. Long Live The Queen is a slow-paced, cozy evening kind of game, good for folks who like numbers and critical thinking. And death. Pink frosted, chubby cheeked death.”

Rule the world or die trying!

Being a Princess is not an easy job. Being a Queen is even harder. Especially when you're only fourteen years old, and the reason you've inherited the throne is that your royal mother has just met an untimely end.

Now power is up for grabs. You may be the official heir, but much of the country's nobility would love to steal the throne for themselves. Aggressive neighbors will take advantage of any weakness to enlarge their borders at your expense. And that's not even mentioning the magical dangers which are lying in wait...

Can you survive long enough to reach your coronation?

First playthrough (I'd watched some people play it before).

*Maxes out military and plays like everyone is an assassin*
*Also gains the cruelty trait*
*Ends up leading the navy to victory and deciding to create a new imperium*
*Conquers world*

Yes. Just yes.

The best VN I've played on Steam so far.
There are an interesting story, a badass (or dead) protagonist and only player's choices and stats vs. environment, as fair as Dark Souls.

I've played much longer than the 4 hours shown, I bought this before it came to Steam and spent so many hours just playing or dying really before I pulled out the old fashioned pencil and paper and began to write down each and everything I tired and different things I learned along the way to get through this game. The end result had over ten sheets of paper with my findings on it... then of course I discovered the online walkthrough but that's another story... however the point is I spent much of my time making strategies and of course dying but it was all in good fun! This game is most certainly a 10/10 and I'd recommend it even to those who are'nt into visual novels it's just that entertaining :)

So. Many. CHOICES! D:

There's a massive amount of skills, and if that wasn't enough their experience gaining is affected by mood. And then there are certain scenarios where you really wouldn't expect a certain skill to be important and so you get screwed over.

The only experiences I've had in visual novels before this were everlasting summer and katawa shoujo. I expected this to be another fairly simple game with only a few scenario choices every now and then. Boy was I wrong. What makes this game so darn hard is the overwhelming amount of choice.

There are so many things that can have different outcomes it is hard to try and avoid one problem without getting yourself into another.

I won't say I 'recommend' this game because of all the rage (and headaches from thinking of strategies) it has caused me, but it looks like its got a decent of story if you're willing to bear with the pain. (since I -have- to recommend or not recommend, I chose recommend because the game itself isn't bad)

I haven't played dark souls, but if it causes you a lot of rage from unexpected bad endings then I'd agree with that similarity.

I have now got all the achievements, which means I have experienced the majority of the content the game has to offer. However, even now there are certain epilogue stories and minor plot texts I have not achieved, but for these I just looked them up online.

I mainly play VNs for the story (and I didn't want to spend loads of time trying [and probably failing] to get the different routes) so I used the debug tools to get different routes and endings. While I like the content that is there, the game makes it quite hard to achieve certain routes without the tools. There is certain content most people simply won't experience because its so hard to meet the requirements for.

So the game's biggest selling factor is also its biggest weakness- the large amount of choices and variables.

If you are too lazy to even mess about with debug tools but would be interested in learning some more lore/plot about the game then you could look here:

Interesting hybrid of Choose Your Own Adventure VN and RPG. The RPG part involves leveling up the main character (you can upgrade 2 skills per turn), so that she can overcome tests of skill and survive. She'll have to face war, assassination attempts, duels (both physical and magical) and other perils. During these ordeals, her mood will swing, and each of the 10 moods I discovered so far (apart from the 8 basics, I managed to be Neutral and Injured) will give you bonuses and penalties.

I reached my first positive game ending after 7 playthroughs. Each time I died, I learned a new test I had to overcome, so I'd concentrate on the necessary skills. Some of the dangers you can divert by the choices you make (I was a little too much headstrong for my own good, repeatedly exposing myself to trouble, thinking I was leveled up enough), but others are mandatory for your storyline to progress. I'm glad I never felt frustrated and resorted to a walkthrough; instead, I started making notes and planning my character development.

When I finally won, after a little more than 13 hours of playing, I was a little perplexed, because I thought the game would be longer. Also, I got only 10 of the 45 achievements, so it's clear that the story has way more unexplored branches! So eventually I'll come back and play again...

The following is a list of these initial playthroughs. Maybe I'll update it when I play more:

1st playthrough: died at week 25, by poisoned chocolates
2nd playthrough: died at week 28, shot by an arrow
3rd playthrough: died at week 31, by poisoned chocolates
4th playthrough: died at week 28, shot by an arrow (but I passed way more tests than before)
5th playthrough: died at week 28, shot by an arrow (I shouldn't have gone to that party again!)
6th playthrough: died at week 33, by sword
7th playthrough: died at week 33, in a magic duel
7th playthrough: coronation at week 40!

You heave a sigh as you awake from previous events,
now all over, and your girlfriend, Summer-Rain snores
softly in your arms, both of you on the couch in her
room. Not wanting to wake her, you leave your left
hand holding her shoulders as you reach for your
laptop to play a game, unable to go back to sleep.

You realize there's a game you haven't touched,
having bought it when it first came out and it was on
offer. You had to keep it from Ms. Novocaine then, for
she was already disliking anime and manga when you
still loved it then. You blink at the clock which reads
2.35AM. Shrugging, you open a game of sakura pink
and frilly death.

You begin with playing the beautiful (jailbait) Princess
Elodie, a would-be-queen of the Kingdom of Nova. As
the story unfolds, magic has been outlawed (go figure)
and you have to make sure Elodie is prepped and ready
to rule as Queen in 40 weeks!

You blink again in disbelief. "Wait... what?!" You gasp,
realizing you're on an indirect timer. "40 weeks is...
40 turns?!"
You realize that you're supposed to keep
Elodie not just alive, but sufficiently skilled in any
numbers of methods and paths available as there are
Barons out to usurp her, kill her, marry her or make
bloody war upon her Kingdom. Sometimes, they want
to do all four!

As you take a magically-inclined path to develop Elodie,
you glance at the achievements available. The primary
core of the game's driving force is even more horrifying,
as the game encourages you to find the different ways
that Elodie can DIE. Your eyes widen as you return to
the glitzy, pastel-colored 2D world. The themes are so
jarring and you find yourself uttering over and over the
same words; "-what kind of game is this?!"

"Hmmn? What kind of game you playing?" Summer-Rain
mutters, awoken by the music-box-like tunes coming
from the game and your incredulous exclamations. You
softly greet her as she stirs and explain your predicament
as to who would create a game to discover the myriad
ways to murder a 12-year-old Princess.

Summer-Rain squints for awhile, then curls up into a ball
next to you and looks at your next move through half-open
eyes. She draws the blanket over the both you best as you
can. "Starboy?" Summer-Rain muses, as you load the game
again after feeding Elodie to monsters in the forest.

"Yes...?" You look towards her, her face bathed in the pink
reflections of the game. Summer-Rain smiles that signature
smile of hers, eyes closing. "Thank you. I was afraid you
would go back to her... I would have understood, but that
would have hurt me. Thank you... thank you so much."

Summer-Rain says the words with such sincerity that you
find yourself moved more than usual by her. You also
cannot help but think you dodged a huge bullet by being
with her rather than Ms. Novocaine, not unlike how you
steer Elodie clear from danger. Ms. Novocaine trying to
return at a strange time when things are going well for
you... also makes you wonder if your life and Elodie's
own are... not dissimilar to the other.

"You're very much welcome. Summer." You respond,
after carefully choosing your words, just like you would
for Elodie to maintain a clear outcome. Although it was
not necessary, you elect caution more and more after
you've been playing Long Live the Queen, and that in
itself, has been a story about learning how to get what
you want, but at the same time, there are some things
that need to be broken, or left behind.

Sometimes both.

"Happy Valentine's day, Summer." You kiss her cheek,
and she beams absent-mindedly. "Oh yeah...!" She
starts, slowly grinning. "It IS Valentine's today...!"

You realize that Long Live the Queen is both the story
of Summer-Rain and even Ms. Novocaine, the story, or
life of a girl thrust out of her comfort zone, into the big
hostile world out for everything. You realize why, to
some tiny degree why Ms. Novocaine might have left,
for a better future for herself, even if that future was
nothing but a lie. Is that why she wanted to return?

Did she really think that her knight in shining armor
would wait for her?

You embrace Summer-Rain and return her kisses.

Your ship has sailed Ms. Novocaine. "Sayonara,
You think to yourself, smiling slightly.
Summer-Rain notices. "What's so funny?" She asks.

"Nothing at all, my Queen. Long may you reign."
You hold her tightly, both of you hugging each other
as if there was no tomorrow. "Happy Valentine's day.
I love you, Summer."
You can feel the warmth of her
smile. "Love you too, Starboy. Happy Valentine's day."

For the first playthrough the game seems very good and is just as enjoyable. Train some skills and see how they influence the outcome. At first it feels like a roguelike of some kind. Unfortunately when you fail and die and replay the game you find out that everything is exactly the same and - save for the outcome of some events depending on your skill. There is no randomization at all. Hence, the game is not very replayable, because everything happens the same way until the moment when you failed skillcheck the previous game, because now you know what you need. This forces metagaming, there is no way to get past some events unless you have appropriate skill and - what is worse - very often there is no hint of what skill will be required of you in the future, so you just train everything little by little until you are forced to replay the game, because you lacked a litttle skill in something. And in the end you will need everything anyway, no specialization is good, gotta be jack of all trades!

The game plays like a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ Age of Decadence, basically. Albeit fun for about 2 hours (or whenever it is you have to replay it for the third or so time), it quickly becomes very repetitive and boring, silly dialogues do not help. I'd actually recommend it for very very cheap though. I got it for 2.5€ I think and I would still be hesitant to recommend the game for that price, but if it is in a bundle or below 2€ or you just love manga, then go ahead and give it a try. It's actually fun for a short while... just too short of a while.

Very nice artworks and music though.

Long Live the Queen incorporates Dating Sim mechanics in a quest to help a girl survive to her 15th birthday. Of course, this is not any ordinary girl, for she is meant to be the future Queen of her land. You have to help our protagonist with preparing her for potential assassins, cival war, propaganda and foreign affairs by making choices about her education and strategy.

By dating sim mechanics, I mean that you have to choose which stats to builds up and you learn about possible strategies through failure. In dating sims this means failing to get the love-interest. In Long Live the Queen this means dying. A lot.

You have multiple save slots. Use them.

That is the main piece of advice I have to have the most enjoyable experience possible. Otherwise, let yourself go, accept failure as a definite and enjoy a game where you slowly build a strategy over time via hypothesis-testing.

Story-wise, the writing is wonderful. The stats results in numerous dialogue branches, so that you feel like your character is actually changing based on her education and her actions. There's numerous replayability, for you can win (and lose) in many different ways. If you're into Game of Thrones-esque intrigue and royal complications, there's enough to keep you entranced for a while.

On the whole, I recommend Long Live the Queen for those who don't mind trial-and-error style strategy game play who are looking for a taste of experiencing Dating Sim mechanics without the dating.

(Though, there is some dating.)

Like to read?
Do you like to boss others around?
Would you like a challenge?

Then this game is just for you, harsh with a sprinkle of glitter to comfort you as you watch yourself die over and over.

In all seriousness though this game is very lovely.
You will die but you are meant to. You slowly learn what actions lead to what to slowly learn which skills and actions work for you.
There are 11 ways to die and many endings giving different playthroughs.

Certain skills actually help you learn about certain characters/problems they are having which before you would of skipped or not have had a 3rd option due to the skills you learnt up to that day. This is the reason you play again even if you got to your coronation. To learn the secrets of your enemies & more of the story while unlocking some beautiful outfits for each skill-type.

God save our gracious Queen
Long live our noble Queen
God save the Queen
Send her victorious
Happy and glorious
Long to reign over us
God save the Queen

O Lord our God arise
Scatter her enemies
And make them fall
Confound their politics
Frustrate their knavish tricks
On Thee our hopes we fix
God save us all

Thy choicest gifts in store
On her be pleased to pour
Long may she reign
May she defend our laws
And ever give us cause
To sing with heart and voice
God save the Queen

Not in this land alone
But be God's mercies known
From shore to shore
Lord make the nations see
That men should brothers be
And form one family
The wide world over

From every latent foe
From the assassins blow
God save the Queen
O'er her thine arm extend
For Britain's sake defend
Our mother, prince, and friend
God save the Queen

Lord grant that Marshal Wade
May by thy mighty aid
Victory bring
May he sedition hush
And like a torrent rush
Rebellious Scots to crush
God save the King

I saw this game while browsing and thought to myself "why not get it?" I looked it up and read reviews about it and they peeked my interest. I decided that I could not possibly live without this game. This game is very fun for a casual, strategic gamer like myself. I recommend it to anyone that is considering this game. It has cute visuals and a strategy/rpg feel to it without losing the casual playing style.

Also, a warning to those who get it and don't want to lose a lot of their progress: save in a new save slot every time before you choose your classes to take. You'll understand as you progress through the game why I said to do that.

The following two things made Long Live The Queen well worth the price for me:

1) It was so creative in its applications of the skills you can choose to develop within the game. It's never quite clear how your choices are going to affect your survival chances--until it's too late, leaving you scrambling for a save file where you didn't make that seemingly innocuous fatal error! Really keeps you on your toes, but it also takes a certain weight off decision making, because you really can't plan that far in advance, so you don't have to worry about making too "wrong" a choice. That isn't to say you can't be strategic. The game is balanced in that as long as you cover several bases, you can come back from almost anything (provided you have a close enough save point :P).

2) The impressive depth of the story (various important characters don't even show up in certain playthroughs) also allows for massive replayability, with different routes feeling like very different experiences. This has the additional perk of making the chasing down of the many simple but sometimes elusive achievements not like a chore and more like a treasure hunt.

Basically, Long Live The Queen is a really well executed choose-your-own-adventure game that I keep playing over and over again, trying to get that 100% completion, all the while having a great time and being majorly impressed at how it doesn't seem to be quite the same game every time I go through it.
