1.1.19 - Balance + Stability Update

I'm experimenting with some new content for TowerFall, but I took a break to put together this quick update. It's mostly about tying up loose ends, on both the design and tech sides of the game :)

We've got one new variant: Regenerating Shields. It should help beef up the 3v1 juggernaut matches that seem to be popular lately. I'm excited to see what else it gets used for.

Balance changes include some tweaks to the Backfire levelset, and an important change to how Bottomless Treasure works that should improve 1v1 tournament play.

For stability I've improved the replay recording to help performance on weaker machines. See below for details!

The full changelog:


  • New variant: Regenerating Shields
  • Powerups spawned from the bottomless treasure chest will now timeout and despawn after 5 seconds
  • Rebalanced a few Backfire versus mode level layouts
  • Removed Start with Super Bomb Arrows from the random variants pool

  • Went back to using XNA on Windows
  • Added option to set replay recording mode: Use GPU, Use CPU, or Off. Use GPU is now the default (was previously done on CPU) and should be faster on most systems
  • Added option to disable controller rumble
  • Added option to disable controller discovery, and removed startup argument that did the same thing. If you were using the startup argument, you'll have to go to the options menu to disable it again
  • Fixed the Matt Makes Games intro being out of sync with the music when vsync is disabled

1.1.18 - Mac and Linux launch + New Variants + Shirts!

We launched TowerFall Ascension on Mac and Linux today! We also added 5 new variants, most based on player suggestions.

Plus Fangamer released official TowerFall shirts and stickers this week!

The new Variants:
Speed Boots - Run 40% faster! Works great with Encumbrance as well
Regenerating Arrows - If you're out of arrows, wait 1.5 seconds and you'll magically gain one
Anti-Gravity Arrows - Arrows never fall, and always seek
Small Quivers - Reduces your max arrow count to 3
Infinite Drills - Drill arrows will drill through every surface they hit, forever

Now we're up to 75 variants :D As always your feedback has been super helpful - have fun!

TowerFall Ascension is the definitive version of the hit archery combat game. Inspired by classics from the golden age of couch multiplayer, it's a 4-player local party game centering around hilarious, intense versus matches. The core mechanics are simple and accessible, but hard to master and combat is fierce. Loot treasure chests for game-changing power-ups, master the art of catching arrows out of the air, or descend on your foes and stomp them into submission. TowerFall is best played competitively with friends, cross-legged on the floor within punching distance of each other.

New in Ascension is the 1- or 2-player co-op Quest mode. Players work together, fighting off a variety of monsters and enemy archers across the land of TowerFall. It's a new adventure to explore when you don't have more friends handy to square off against.

New features in TowerFall Ascension include:

The single player "Quest" mode is so complex and fun that you won't care about there not being any online multiplayer. I would say this game is an 8-bit Smash Brothers, but IT'S BETTER.

Super Simple gameplay with tons of complexity made every round of play an endless variety of chaos that compels you to get better and better. I've put 10 hours in single player, and I'm not even half way through it.

I have mixed feelings about this game. Overall, the game is extremely well polished. The graphics, sound effects, and game mechanics are outstanding. Multiplayer is really where this game shines. Up to four archers battling for chaotic supremacy. There's different "variations" of gameplay to choose from when playing multiplayer which really help mix it up when the stock gameplay becomes boring.

The somewhat crappy part about multiplayer though is that you have to unlock new stages and archers by playing the single player (or duo) "quest" mode. This is where things take a downward slope.

The difficulty is way over the top. Each mob has it's own unique abilities, which is great, but the AI is possibly the worst I've ever seen. Normally when people say "the worst" they mean dumb or too easy. TowerFall is the exact opposite. The AI doesn't really do anything 'on its own', it simply reacts to the user's input. Sure, there's some "dumb" enemies like goos or slugs that walk around the map and occasionally jump at the player but most of the mobs react as soon as the player it's the dodge, jump, or fire action. Like for example the second I press fire, the enemy archer dodges. Every-single-time. Like wise with certain flying mobs. The second I fire an arrow, they dodge. They will always dodge it. Likewise when they fire an arrow. If you dodge, they will fire a second arrow. If you jump, they will reaim and fire another arrow, hitting you everytime. The only way I've found to effectively kill an enemy archer is to unleash a barrage of at least 3 arrows. It's exceptionally stupid.

That being said, I think this is a really fun multiplayer game. While you have to unlock all the features through single player "quest" mode where you'll have to deal with the abysmal AI, the mutiplayer aspect is s great that I can ignore that.

Towerfall Ascension is most probably one of the best local multiplayer games ever created. It's a game that makes and breaks friendships.

The movement speed is insane once you become aware of the things that are possible. Catching arrows is one skill, but catching multiple arrows will dodging through the air, ending with sticking to a wall, jumping back into the open area to shoot your opponent with of the arrows you just caught, is simply brilliant.

Sure it will take you time to truly master this game, which is best played with an USB controller by the way, but the road to perfection is simply brilliant.

Just like other competitive arena games - take Super Smash Bros as an example - there are several extra power-ups available. These will spawn at the beginning of each match. Some power ups give you special arrows (laser arrows or bomb arrows for example), others will have an environmental influence (slow motion or rising lava). These power-ups are always a great risk to get, because you have to engage, but the reward can be big of course.

On the other hand there's the tactic to avoid shooting. You start with three or two arrows and when your opponent shoot and miss, you can grab that arrow. But of course, once again, these missed arrows can also be used as a trick. Those are just two examples of how arena control can work in your advantage of disadvantage.

Really, Towerfall Ascension is brilliant and all you need is this baby, four USB controllers, three friends and some drinks for an AWESOME video game evening!

Towerfall Ascension is an all around fantastic game. If you have friends, get them together and play this game with them. If you don't have friends, go make some and play this game with them.

While the game has been critisised for not having online multiplayer, the type of game that it is really doesn't lend itself well to online multiplayer. There is a reason that it's not in, and it is a good reason. The multiplayer really works best when sitting with-and yelling at- the people around you.

That being said, the single player campaign is also great fun. It's challenging without ever really feeling cheap. While it was put in as a fun little addition to the Ascension version, it's actually very engaging.

The graphics really are impressive as well. Little details like your character's hat being shot off, or their cloaks being lit on fire after narrowly avoiding an explosion really sell the graphics style. It feels retro, yet very modern.

And of course, the soundtrack is excellent as well.

This is a fantastic game if you have a bunch of friends that you want to play with. It is also an enjoyable piece, thanks to the questing mode, that you can play by yourself against NPC monsters. I would say the versus mode is what is the most fun in this game.

Definitely a must-buy for people looking for party games!

This game is awesome. While it may take some time to get used to just how it works, and the arrows curving 45 degrees in order to find their mark, it's great fun considering everyone is finally on the same playing field (a bit of a rarity these days). Pure 1v1/2v2 or ffa chaos in a tiny room with numerous power-ups and a great variety of arrow types, it's especially fun if you can get your entire group in the same physical room, on the same system. Only then does the fun truly begin.

Really love the art for this game. It's simplistic enough to imply detail in the right places, and polished enough to really flesh out a whole game world with. The skull animations when you die look really clean.

Played this at my cousin's went home and bought it for myself and another cousin. They really need to make an update to this game to add online multiplayer. Local is fun but no one hangs out together anymore. I understand that since this was an OUYA game that the update may never come.
