1.1.19 - Balance + Stability Update

I'm experimenting with some new content for TowerFall, but I took a break to put together this quick update. It's mostly about tying up loose ends, on both the design and tech sides of the game :)

We've got one new variant: Regenerating Shields. It should help beef up the 3v1 juggernaut matches that seem to be popular lately. I'm excited to see what else it gets used for.

Balance changes include some tweaks to the Backfire levelset, and an important change to how Bottomless Treasure works that should improve 1v1 tournament play.

For stability I've improved the replay recording to help performance on weaker machines. See below for details!

Gameplay:

  • New variant: Regenerating Shields
  • Powerups spawned from the bottomless treasure chest will now timeout and despawn after 5 seconds
  • Rebalanced a few Backfire versus mode level layouts
  • Removed Start with Super Bomb Arrows from the random variants pool

Stability:
  • Went back to using XNA on Windows
  • Added option to set replay recording mode: Use GPU, Use CPU, or Off. Use GPU is now the default (was previously done on CPU) and should be faster on most systems
  • Added option to disable controller rumble
  • Added option to disable controller discovery, and removed startup argument that did the same thing. If you were using the startup argument, you'll have to go to the options menu to disable it again
  • Fixed the Matt Makes Games intro being out of sync with the music when vsync is disabled

We launched TowerFall Ascension on Mac and Linux today! We also added 5 new variants, most based on player suggestions.

Plus Fangamer released official TowerFall shirts and stickers this week!

The new Variants:
Speed Boots - Run 40% faster! Works great with Encumbrance as well
Regenerating Arrows - If you're out of arrows, wait 1.5 seconds and you'll magically gain one
Anti-Gravity Arrows - Arrows never fall, and always seek
Small Quivers - Reduces your max arrow count to 3
Infinite Drills - Drill arrows will drill through every surface they hit, forever

Now we're up to 75 variants :D As always your feedback has been super helpful - have fun!

Changes:
  • On Windows, switched the game to SDL2 and MonoGame (thanks to Ethan Lee). This should lower the system requirements, improve gamepad support, and help with porting. You can still play the XNA version by switching to the 'xna' game branch

Fixes:
  • Fixed the new variant '!' on the variants menu not drawing with the correct transparency

TowerFall Ascension is the definitive version of the hit archery combat game. Inspired by classics from the golden age of couch multiplayer, it's a 4-player local party game centering around hilarious, intense versus matches. The core mechanics are simple and accessible, but hard to master and combat is fierce. Loot treasure chests for game-changing power-ups, master the art of catching arrows out of the air, or descend on your foes and stomp them into submission. TowerFall is best played competitively with friends, cross-legged on the floor within punching distance of each other.

New in Ascension is the 1- or 2-player co-op Quest mode. Players work together, fighting off a variety of monsters and enemy archers across the land of TowerFall. It's a new adventure to explore when you don't have more friends handy to square off against.

New features in TowerFall Ascension include:
  • Brand new 1- or 2-player co-op Quest mode
  • 50 additional Versus arenas, for a total of 120 unique maps
  • More game-changing power-ups, such as Drill Arrows that burrow through walls
  • 4 new unlockable, playable archers, for a total of 8

むかしゲーセンの隅っこに置かれていたような固定画面のアーケードライクなアクションゲーム。
もともとローカル専用な最大4人のマルチ専用ゲームだったのが、
最大2人(これもローカルのみ)までクエストモードが搭載されたらしい。
マルチプレイがローカルのみでネットワークで遊ぶことが出来ないため、
ローカルでも複数人で遊べる、またはクエストモードだけでも1人遊びたい人向けのゲーム。

4人対戦はスマブラみたいなパーティゲーム。
クエストモードはTD的なウェーブで構成されたステージを順番にクリアしていく。
ステージが結構な種類があったり、ランダムで登場するアイテムの効果で
シールドが付いたり、弓矢が増えたりとゲーム中のキャラクターがパワーアップする要素もあり。
初期状態の使用可能キャラクターが4キャラクターだが、
アンロックすると使用キャラクターが増えるらしい。
それ以外にもタイムアタックモードのようなモードもあり。

操作方法はキャラの移動、ドッジ、弓矢の発射とジャンプのみでシンプル。
キャラクターの攻撃方法は弓矢が基本で、あとはマリオみたいな踏んづけが可能。
撃てる弓矢の本が数決まっており、撃った弓矢を拾うことで撃てる数が回復する。
弓矢が無くなるとジャンプして踏んづける攻撃しか出来なくなるため、
基本的にしっかり弓矢を狙い、かつ弓矢の回収までを考慮する必要がある。

弓矢は一見狙いづらそうに見えるが、微妙な補正がかかっており、
8方向で指定するだけで簡単に敵に当てることができる。
慣れれば連続で敵に当てることも可能になり、コンボ的な爽快感がある。
ジャンプアクションは壁ジャンプやエッジにつかまって登ったり、それなりの柔軟性あり。

また、操作の中でキーとなるアクションがドッジで、緊急回避のほかに、
空中での2段ジャンプ的な用途や、敵の弓矢にタイミングを合わせて発動すると
素手で弓矢を受け止めることができ、使いこなすと一気に面白さが増す要素になっている。

プレイに360パッドを使用しているが、ゲームパッドはあったほうが良いと思われる。
ロジテックのパッドでも動いたので、おそらく一般的なコントローラでも使用可能。

操作性とキャラクターの動きが良いし、音楽も多彩でなかなかかっこよい。
動画で興味を持った人は買ってもよいかもしれない。
海外のレビューでもかなり評価が高い。
だが、ローカルオンリー、そんなゲーム。

As a game designer, I'm sad that I have to live in a world where my entire job and sustenance is based on my ability to convince people to buy and play my games when they could be playing Towerfall instead. I can't really capture everything that I love about it into concise statements; it's bigger than life, it brings people together. I've forged strong friendships over this game. Heck, people want to be my friend just because I have it.

It doesn't matter who you are or what kind of games you like. It doesn't even matter if you've never liked a game before. You will have fun playing Towerfall.

And it looks awesome. And the soundtrack kicks ♥♥♥. Oh, and the sounds? The way every archer has a different synthetic "voice" so I can tell who's shooting and who's killed even when my eyes are closed? The way the jester makes one of three possible jingle sounds when he crouches?? Ugh. Everything about this game, every detail big and small. It's so good.

Bring controllers.

Do you remember playing multiplayer games such as Goldeneye or Smash Bros. with friends for hours on end? TowerFall is that experience and more. Matches are fierce and exciting. They are the perfect length to allow players to rotate out without feeling too short. You’ll be cheering and yelling alongside everyone else as you wait for your turn.

TowerFall is a masterclass example of intentional game design. Nothing feels out of place or missing. The controls and pacing have been fine tuned to create the best possible experience.

While multiplayer is the main focus, and is amazing, there is a substantial amount of single player content. I’d like to focus on that in this review since everyone else is going to talk about multiplayer.

In quest mode you take on waves of enemies with a friend or by yourself. There’s one level for every tower with normal and hardcore difficulties, which I would rename to hardcore and insane. Waves and enemy movement are not random, they have been carefully designed to provide a varied and challenging experience. Even the simplest of enemies can be a huge obstacle with so much going on at once. The boss fights are epic too.

Perhaps the most challenging mode in TowerFall is trials mode. It’s like break-the-targets in Smash Bros. but way more intense. Each trial is like a puzzle -- figure out the optimal way to beat it -- then figure out how to pull it off. Gold times are set so someone moderately good at the game might have a chance with practice. Diamond times are even harder with most set to under a few seconds. It feels very satisfying when you pull it off. Each trial feels unique and like the game is trying to teach you something.

TowerFall is a beautiful game with an insane amount of visual polish. While its character and environment designs stand out, the details and animation are what puts it over the top. Everything from how the character moves to the environment details such as dripping water or crumbling skeletons.

This review is not complete without talking about the audio design. Each character has a unique set of sound effects. This not only gives them individual personalities but also lets you know what’s happening elsewhere on the screen. The soundtrack is also worthy of much praise. Each tower has a unique track that matches the visuals perfectly. It echos the gameplay both in tempo and mood and tells a story at the same time.

Multiplayer is what you buy the game for but single player is very good too. TowerFall is an amazing game and is worth both your time and money.

Buy this game right now. Tell that random guy at work you talk to on occasion your home address. Wait for him to arrive. Play this game together until the sun goes cold and the mountains turn to ash. Be happy with your life knowing that you have seen and played with the greatest creation known to man.
