Blackguards is one of the best games i have played in this style. Its characters are superb, and in depth combat system that is also quite simple if you dont look into it that far, it has great scenery and graphics, and to top it all off it has a great lore and map. The whole amnesia thing doesn't annoy you as much as it does in many other games because you get to play through most of it learning as you go along just enough that it drip feeds your imagination of what will come next.

This game has kept me interested for hours and hours of play. The different scenarios forcing you to use different stragies, defeating you over and over, then finding a different strategy to kick it in the dirt is so satisfying. The game allows you to build characters in any which way, whether you wanna shoot at the baddies from afar with bows and crossbows, or be a complete juggernaut and get your hands dirty with beefy armor and an axe. Some features might cause the game to be a little too easy after a while, such as massive gold accumulation making cheap healing outside of combat very convenient. Even so, this game is a great one to check out and play around with.

This game is somewhat interesting, but mostly meh, in my opinion. There's gameplay in there (and if you think of every battle like it's a puzzle that needs solving, it becomes even more interesting), but there are a lot of confusing and idiosyncratic elements that hold it back. The English translation is not very stellar, the story is pretty much nonsensical, there's no way to grind at ALL, and the party mechanics can be frustrating at times, making the game harder than it should be. It uses some D and D stats like Treat Wounds that make the levelling bloated. The battle environments typically work against you more than you are able to use them to your advantage. There are no ways to win some of the levels because they were designed so terribly (I'm looking at you, mission near the end where you're chasing away birds), and in others the AI doesn't actually do what it's supposed to do (mission with the alligators is pretty much ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥). Also, one of your characters dies in the middle of the game (it's unavoidable), which is annoying, and another character turned on me even though I did everything the wiki said I had to do to keep her faithful. Don't play it unless you absolutely LOVE turn-based RPGs. Three dollars or less would be a good value for this game.

SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER: The elf chick dies in the final match of the arena, the other girl turns on you.

Blackguards is not a very good game. It's a great example of turn-based strategy gone horribly wrong and just because something uses hexagons doesn't make it inherently worthwhile.
Blackguards is cheaply made. That much becomes apparent as soon as the voice acting starts torturing your speakers. The voice actor for the male main character is weirdly familiar from other budget titles. He's not trying very hard and neither is anyone else. The graphics are also fairly poor. I didn't expect much but it looks incredibly cheap and one has to suspect it was meant to be a tablet title originally. The art direction is also incredibly generic. This game makes Dragon Age look like Zeno Clash.

Most of the game is really just battles. Towns, numerous as they are, serve to buy gear and heal up and not much more. There are side quests but they almost always result in even more combat. You would think a game that contains this much fighting would have deep mechanics but no. There is not even flanking or backstabbing. Most of the weapon abilities make you hit harder or pierce armor in exchange for accuracy and that's basically it for physical attackers. Abilities that can hit multiple enemies are only available very late and they are not great. There is a knockdown but it virtually never works and most elite enemies are outright immune to it. The game is terrible with double standards like this.

Mages have a bit more to do but the spells are horribly imbalanced, ranging from absolutely useless to pretty much necessary to beat the game. You can't even make a proper offensive mage because spells do poor damage and are not very mana-efficient. There's virtually no way to restore mana outside of the very poor regeneration between turns. Potions do exist but they are insanely expensive. They're something you use in a boss fight and not something you can waste in a regular encounter. To make things worse, spells are also line of sight dependent. That means if you surround an enemy with your melee fighters, you can't hit them and if one of your characters gets surrounded you can't heal them. Want to throw a fireball into a cluster of enemies? You can't because you have no line of sight to the center so you can never really hit the whole group. It's as annoying as it sounds. Level 4 spells on the other are insane. They can hit every single enemy or ally on the entire map, no matter how far away they are. Sadly, later on enemies use the same spells against you and it's awful because you can't do anything about it.

The game's biggest downfall are the gimmick maps. This is hard to explain. Basically, half the encounters are built some sort of gimmick except... the game doesn't explain these gimmicks to you or warns you that there even might be a gimmick instead of a regular skirmish. The most blatant example is when you plunder a crypt and you get attacked by a gang of skeletons (you never hear about skeleton gang violence in the media, typical) and every time you destroy one, it gets resurrected by some crystal. Fair enough, you have the skeletons distracted by some of your fighters and have another one sneak around and attack the crystal. You attack it with your spear and...it does no damage. The crystal is immune to thrust damage. There is no feedback to it, you can't figure it out on your own through the environment. Well, that would have been nice to know, I thought to myself. Most of the time the best way to beat is a map is to figure out the gimmick and immediately reload the fight in order to actually use it to its full effect. Everything else is an uphill battle.

So yeah, it's not a very good game. It's full of baffling design decisions and even the things outside of combat are not good. I could write for hours about the awful, incoherent story but it's not worth the effort.

The game was quite interesting, a little fun. Though I found it quite short. For this reason, I suggest do not purchase it unless at a very good discount. These are the sort of games that you play once, and the story is done. Not much replay value, aside from nostalgia down the road. Honestly, who cares about acheivements anyway?

I went ahead and did the side missions, which still did not leave that much to do when all was said and done.

This is a good game. It's refreshing that it doesn't coddle the players advancement and that there are consequences to choices and actions. Definitely not for 'casual' players, and not a sandbox style open world, it still is a fantastic RPG that I find challenging and rewarding. I plan to also play Blackguards 2 eventually, so I would strongly recommend it to RPG fans. The graphics in the battles are pretty cool, the story is strong, and the acting/voice is nice.

What is good about this game:

- Character development is complex
- Good setting
- Varied enemies
- Variety of situations you find yourself into
- Nice graphics

So why downvote?

Because my friends, of two reasons.

The GAME BALANCE. It is so broken i cannot even believe it. Some fights are so unbalanced i had to actually lower the difficultry to Normal to beat them, which i never ever did for any game in my life. This because you are put in situations where you just need luck to make it out alive.

And Luck is the real master of this game, not skill nor strategy. Just pure luck. RNG (Random Numerical Generation) (What determines % of success or failure of things) is so determining in the combat that it just rules over everything. In other turn based games there is RNG of course, but also other factors like strategy, formations, class builds, level are critical to win a fight, but not here in blackguards, not at the same level.

A single random critical, or spell failure (spells can FAIL casting, yes you got it right), or a random miss with 99% chance, or again some trap which activates randomly decides to turn just towards your party and wipe it out with a blast of fire.

All these things can make a fight fail. Random chance upon chance upon chance upon chance. Not even in Vegas there is so much gambling.

This more than a game of skill is a game of luck. I have many many years of experience in all kinds of RPGs but i just cannot take it anymore. I find myself by now to repeat fight over and over and over again just to get a fight where the RNG favors me, where traps do not activate on my team, or on the target i have to protect, etc, and make me fail after a well planned strategy.

Do yourself a favor, go and buy Divinity Original Sin, that's a turn based game made right, not this disguised slot machine of a game we have here.

I got this game in a bundle and was just curious to try it, so I first cheked the store page to see if there were good reviews. There weren\'t, and people was talking about it as too hard.
I agree, the character sheet is very complex and you end up wasting a lot of experience points, but it\'s not too bad.
I really enjoyed the story and I find that the voice acting is superb, there\'s a point in the game where you have more than 10 side quests and you really want to go on, but then there\'s a slow down and it gets quite heavy in the end. I don\'t think it\'s too hard, but I don\'t recommend playing this game at max difficulty, it\'s balanced enough at normal.
Overall it was a fun game, far from perfection but still enjoyable, I definitely won\'t play it a second time, but I will play Blackguards 2, which is said to be even better polished. Hope you found my review useful!

BlackGuards is a turn based RPG with party system and grid battlegrounds . It is not open world game but rather simplified point click system to move around towns and map . There are some sidequests and text based choices that can effect your adventure . At the start of the game you will be able to customize your character with attributes, spells and perks in depth . ( however cosmetic options are lacking )

This game has a lot of small issues but I was able to overlook those because the core gameplay is fun and challenging . I will go over some negative points that people mentioned in reviews to give some feedback .

-Beginner's trap?-

There are several events in this game that can force you to start over if you did not manage your resources properly . You can end up in a position where you can't win a fight and can't go to previous areas to level up on side quests . Auto Save will not help so you should keep 2 more save points . This is a problem mostly in early game when you still trying to figure out how to play .I don't think that it adds any fair diffeculty to the game but some gamers might actually like unexpected events .

-Permadeath on Party Characters-?

One of the characters in your party will die ( forever ) This is a scripted event so you won't actually loose party members by diying in combat . It is kinda cool to see a game have the balls to do that but for obvious reasons not everybody likes that . You can potentially waste some gold by buying equipment for that character ( I think you get it back but sellback value is not the same )

- Too much Luck -?-

In this game Ranged,Melee and Spell attacks have % to hit . Luck is a big factor early on . Eventually you can upgrade skills high enough to where you will hit 90-100% so it has to do a lot with how you level your characters .

Dodging is frustraing early in game but not a fair criticism for RPG because it adds depth to character builds . However there is a luck element to using items from iventory which can be avoided by save/load ( which should not be a thing in a first place )

-Very basic loot System -

Loot in this game is not exciting to say the least . You get a 3-7 damage weapon and 10 hours later you get 4-8 weapon .It keeps number values low which is good because it makes fights less gear dependent but I would prefer something better than just common white trash as you would call it in other games .

Rewards for Side quests are very unbalanced . Some quest chains can take 2-3 hours and you might get the same reward as the 20 minute quest . There are some specific quests that give uniqe weapons but there is no consistency with legth or difficulty of the mission .

-Pros ?-

Gameplay and character builds are deep enough for me to overlook some of those issues above . You will constatly have to adapt your tactics to nearly every fight . There are a lot stages with different objectives which creates thought provoking gameplay . Eveything is voice acted and dialogue has good jokes here and there . Perhaps my favorite thing is that all spells gain new effect at maximum level ( for example single target fireball at level 18 transforms into 3 fireballs )

Score: 7/10 . I am really enjoying the unpredictable and unforgiving nature of this game . Perhaps it is a bit unfair to new and casual players but it is fantastic for someone who does not want the game to hold your hand . At full price I would not recommend it to everyone but on sale you should consider picking it up if you like turn based party RPGs .

When I started to play the game I was surprised that it have so many negative reviews, it looked like a very good game at the beginning, but then its flaws bacame evident.

pros:
-good storyline
-interesting side quests
-huge freedom on character development
-decent graphic
-interesting combat system
-interesting magic/abilities

cons:
-freedom on character development can turn against you later in the game. there's no clue on which way you should get skills and abilities and you can come across certains fights where you absolutely need a certain skill to win or it will take a lot of luck. this is quite frustrating. expecially if you don't have a savegame old enought to learn the ability you need.
-inventory items are uninteresting: you only get good stuff from a few side quest in the entire game, merchants around the world only sell cheap/bad stuff. also I think the weight of the stuff (especially supplies) is unbalanced.
-major and minor bugs could prevent you from completing some side-quests
-unnecessary loading times

in the end I can recomend this game only if you are a turn based rpg enthusiast.

the game is awsome, no doubt about it, perfect RPG.
but it freezes my entire system after one specific fight in chapter 4, it´s really disappointing not beeing able to finish the game because of that, i have all the recomended system requirements, but loading takes too long and this one cutscene appears to be requiring more memory than recomended. i dont know...
seems like many people are having these sort of problems
but i´ll change my review to positive if someone helps me fix it

The game is about combat but the combat sucks so dont bother!
The worst are the mages, they dont regenerate mana after battles and they make too many mistakes which means that too often they cast nothing. which ruins your tactics completely. Its slow, sluggish and unsatisfying. The loot that you get is 90% useless and there arent many sets of armors. I felt cheated way more often than rewarded in this game mostly because of the mages. I dont like to be frustrated so i didnt like this game..
