Important Agarest news - An announcement & Sale

21 Mai 2014

Taken from the latest Ghostlight blog http://blog.ghostlight.uk.com/post/important-agarest-news-an-announcement-sale

Hi everyone. We’ve got lots of Agarest news for you all today. First of all I’m pleased to inform you that both Agarest: Generations of War and Agarest: Generations of War Zero are now on sale on Steam. Agarest Zero is receiving a mighty 33% discount ($13.99 / £10.04 / 13,39€) and can be picked up from here while Agarest: Generations of War is receiving an incredible 66% discount ($5.09 / £3.73 / 5,09€) and is available from here.

It might come as little surprise to you , but while I’m on the subject of Agarest I’m very pleased to confirm that we will be releasing Agarest: Generations of War 2 on Steam later this year. This sequel to the bestselling original game introduces a whole new battle system as well as a raft of other features.

Once again we will be using the team over at Laughing Jackal to port this popular console JRPG to PC.

Now, as some of you may have noticed, Agarest 2 is not a dungeon crawler and has been released in the West :). So, those of you looking forward to finding out which dungeon crawler we’re bringing to Steam (as discussed in my previous blog) will be pleased to know that this announcement is still due to come on Thursday. So do keep your eye on the blog.

More on Agarest: Generations of War 2

THE THIRD INSTALMENT IN THE THRILLING AGAREST SERIES!

One day, the world was enveloped by a mysterious blinding light causing terrible destruction. The central continent, from where the light is believed to have originated, fell silent whilst demons began to spread throughout the world like a plague.

Sometime afterwards, a young man by the name of Weiss, suffering from amnesia, encounters the enigmatic Eva, from whom Weiss learns that he has committed the grievous sin of deicide. In order to atone for his crime, he must become the "Vessel" in which the power of the divinity he slaughtered will be stored. For it will be that power which will be used to resurrect the one whose life he stole.

For those who betray the divine will pay for their sins in the space which separates salvation and damnation, as will their progeny...

Revamped Battle System: Unlike the first two games of the series, Agarest 2 battles are fought with an engaging active grid-based battle system.

HD graphics: Enjoy your favourite characters, environments and CGs in high-definition!

Mini-games: Engage in Bathtub, Shiatsu and Massage mini-games.

New Agarest Universe: Roam freely in the newly designed Agarest Universe

Agarest: Generations of War is a JRPG one of the few on pc. Though the game is often considered slow and repetitive once you understand how the mechanics of the game work and if you forge weapons as you should, you'll see that the game becomes much easier. The path on the world map is a series of dots and locations with events, to get to those events you must complete those red dots so you can proceed to the next and so on.

The gameplay:
- Turn based combat, in each turn you have a move phase and a action phase.
- The party consists of 1 to 6 members.
- Each turn you gain AP (action points) which allow you to move or attack.
- During the move phase you are allowed to move your characters up to their move stat by spending 1 AP per square.
- During the action phase you are allowed to attack (and be attacked) spending AP or both AP and SP for special attacks (called Ex Skills).
- SP is gained by attacking, getting targeted, slaying an enemy or having a party member slain.
- The order in the action phase is determined by a character's AGI and remaining AP for both party members and enemies.
- There are also Extended Areas, which are different to each character, when you link characters through these you can strategize in various ways as they allow you to make combos with more than one character and attack monsters that would otherwise be out of the range of certain characters/attacks.
- As you progress through the game you unlock fields, different fields have different sizes and different bonuses/penalties.

The story is fairly interesting and its best part is near the end of the game, you start with Leonhardt a young general of a decadent noble house of the kingdom of Gridamas, he's invading the Frontier a place where various races live, mainly elves, he starts questioning the war, that until he sees a little elven girl about to be slain, then he proceeds to save her and in the process betray his country and is soon after slain by a Knight in black armor who is in service of the men loyal to Gridamas' king.
As he slowly dies a mysterious woman named Dyshana appears and proposes a contract which binds him and his descendants to certain terms in exchange for power and his life.

Agarest is a shining example of JTRPG - Japanese Torture RPG

Total playtime (so far): 50 hours.

- Time spent researching how to craft a skill/weapon on wikia: 15 hours.
- Time spent dealing with endless and often pointless battles: 15 hours.
- Time spent trying to keep characters on roughly the same level: 5 hours.
- Time spent navigating between shop/blacksmith/adventurer guild just to build an item: 5 hours.
- Time spent loading old save because blacksmith can randomly fail alchemy (this is a feature): 2 hours.

This left me with less than 10 hours of actual enjoyable gameplay, even less was spent on character development and plotline. Given the complexity of Agarest's various gameplay system, it's a real shame to find none of them produce the joy they intended.

So in the end, this is more like a piece of torture porn than anything else: Do it only if you are into this kind of stuff.

(unfortunately for me, 10+ years of JRPG experience has taught me the patience required to enjoy such sadistic gameplay, so expect update when I actually finish this damn game...)

Update on 75 hours mark:

Finally done with 2nd generation (3 more to go), let me add some more comments:

1. Auto-battle is crucial yet miserable: there are many instances where you wish AI can take over the manual labor. But leaving it to its own devices, will consistently turn cakewalk battles into deadly struggles (no XP rewards for casualties).

2. Seriously, you need a true end guide: as with most role-playing, it might be tempting to play this game "your way". But Agarest couldn't care less about your preference, you will, because of the tight requirement for CG/event trigger, miss out on 50~80% of actual content.

3. Less than 10% players ever manage to get the achievement for completing 2nd generation (just completing it will grant you that achievement). I think this goes to show many reviewers have not given this game a long hard look before recommending...

4. Story-wise, Agarest is an ok game, there are moments that will redeem your manual labor (once again, use guide, or it may just be manual labor). Though I personally prefer more character development instead of "more new characters"...

My verdict still holds though: this is a game for the persistent fools, such as myself.

This game is really good. It can be kinda repetitive at times but if you press Q, it auto fights for you so yeah. It's easy to bypass that problem. The story is kinda interesting. 8/10

This game wasted 80 hours of my life. Game repeats the same battle over and over with a different background and somewhat different enemies. The only thing that kept me playing was the story and then again the ending is not worth it if you aren't going for true ending (And that's impossible without walkthrough). Not worth of replay.

I had a look at this a while back, I certainly wouldn't give it a rating like At7addak did, however a good turn based JRPG if your looking for your fix.

Comparando com outros jogos do mesmo estilo que já estava acostumado como o Final Fantasy Tactis e Disgaea, vejo algumas desvantagens no gameplay como:

Maioria dos personagens já vem com sua classe meio que pré-definido;
E nos turnos obrigatoriamente vc deve se mover primeiro para depois realizar os ataques, isso me incomodou nos primeiros minutos de jogo;

MAS não vejo isso de forma negativa gostei bastante do jogo, pode realizar combos extremamente fortes e com boa variação tanto de combos como de equipamentos. Quando a historia achei excelente. Recomendo o/
