Laughing Jackal's next title Flame Over now on Steam

Flame Over, Laughing Jackal’s brilliant firefighting, action roguelike will be released on the 28th May. If you pre-purchase the game you’ll get a massive 40% discount off the usual price of $11.99. Flame Over looks stunning and is both rock hard and a hell of a lot of fun, so while I might be a bit biased on this one, I’d definitely recommend you check out the games Steam Store page here

Agarest: Generations of War 2 is out now

http://store.steampowered.com/app/312790

I’m thrilled to say that Agarest: Generations of War 2 is out now on Steam! If you’ve pre-purchased the game then it should now be available to download from your Steam library.

If you’ve not already bought the game then never fear, the 20% discount (with an additional 13% reduction if you own either of the previous Agarest games) doesn’t expire until next Thursday. That means there’s still time to pick Agarest 2 up for just £11.99 (or even less!)

Agarest: Generations of War - Exclusive game features!

Agarest: Generations of War includes many unique features that cannot be found in any other Strategy Role Playing Game. Here's a summary of some of the best:

Extended Area

Extended Area is the "Linked Area" set for both your party and your enemies. Each character in the game has a uniquely shaped extended area. When a character's turn comes around, all other characters in the Extended Area of the character in play (and characters in the extended areas of those characters!) can combine in an extended attack. This allows you to chain your party's attacks together, allowing access to more Arts and huge Combos!

Blacksmith's Guild
You can upgrade various Items and Equipment at the Blacksmith's Guild in two different ways:

By Enhancement: You can enhance equipment to a maximum of Level 5. Once an Item is enhanced to Level 5, you can convert the Item, changing it into something else. This process is irreversible and the original item is lost. Experimentation reveals some great new items!

Through Alchemy: Alchemy allows you to combine several items to create a single, more powerful piece of equipment. While you lose the items used in the alchemy, you gain a powerful new piece of equipment and permanent access to your new item in the Shop! Alchemy can create powerful new weapons and armour but occasionally a Smithing Accident will occur and the smith will create a different item than what you expected!

The "Soul Breed" system
Agarest takes place across 5 generations of heroes, starting with your first character, Leonhardt. During each generation you will build relationships with 3 different female party members, and at the end of each generation's story arc you must choose to marry one of the girls.

Your choice of marriage partner is restricted to girls who've grown fond of you over a particular generation. Your options are determined by your choices during conversations at certain points of the story.

The girl you choose as your wife - and the strength of their relationship with you - will determine the abilities of the main character in the next generation of the story. You'll have to experience multiple play throughs to see all of the character possibilities open to you! What heroes might you create?

Free DLC included

Agarest is one of my all-time favorite strategy RPG, and favorite of those available on PC.

Gameplay is a lot of fun, especially if you enjoy having a lot of characters to choose from to form your party, each differing from others by the weapon they use, their skill slots and their unique passive abilities and special attacks. Character customization is fairy extensive, allowing you not just select characters’ weapons and armor and allocate their level-up points, but also select exact skills the characters will have available, and choosing skills that will allow your characters to form powerful combination attacks is important for winning.

There is also extensive item and skill-crafting system, and every next-tier item and skill you want to use has to be crafted rather than bought in the next town’s shop. Though once the initial crafting is performed, all skills and some items can be bought from the stores if you want more copies of them.

Story and character-wise, Agarest is definitely among the best games I’ve played. Each character in a very large cast has very distinct personality, and most of them defy standard RPG tropes. And with the story spanning multiple generations, it is interesting to see how long-living characters interact with the descendants of the person they once knew.

The story also leaves the player plenty of choice: there are multiple story branches in each generation, as well as more numerous event where your choice affect your relationship with three potential love interests, determining which of them you can marry in the end of generation (the story is about protagonist’s goals being carried on by his descendants, after all ~.^ ).

In short, I fully recommend Agarest to all RPG fans, particularly the fans of strategy RPGs!

I managed to get the true ending and honestly I’ll never try THAT again.

Pros:
+JRPG on PC,
+Decent art style,
+Interesting premise,
+Story and character are hit or miss; more towards hit,
+Battle system is entertaining,
+Music is actually very awesome,
+In-depth crafting system.

Cons:
--The true end; I’m sorry but those final bosses can go straight to hell,
--Battle system is very, very slow without configing the FPS to at least 45+,
--Dungeons have random battles and for a SRPG that is suffering,
--Getting the true end is pretty much imposable without a guide,
--Way to grindy for an SRPG,
--Battle system doesn’t have enough feedback in my opinion,
--Feels longer than necessary; five generations is a bit too long for me,
--Having several recourses like PP, TP and EP feels a bit redundant and it’s hard to farm for.

Conclusion:
Not the worst JRPG in the world but most currently not the best. It has its problems but it also has its moments, sadly I wouldn’t recommend it due to the fact that I feel I’ve played better JRPGs and now with Steam putting out more JRPGs you have more of a selection.

Disclaimer:
Now just because I don’t recommend it doesn’t mean the game is bad, it’s more like if you enjoy JRPGs you’ll feel what I felt; that is it gets tedious after the 30-40 hour mark.

A tactics game without the tactics. Each battle takes place on the same landscape with no different tiers and peaks to battle for or take advantage of. Every battle lasts about 5 Minutes or more. Top it off with grindy leveling, you have a time sink for sure. But is it a time sink worth throwing in? I don't think so.

And that's just my major gripe.

The economy of the game is strange and unintuitive. Basically, all the shops in the game are the same from town to town and you have to amass materials from the battles and bring them to the blacksmith to craft new gear for your characters. But first you have to buy the recipes which cost an arm and a leg. You buy these (the game doesnt tell you any of this by the way) from the regular shop owner. Once you do that, you have to go to the Blacksmith and see what materials you need to make the item. Making the item also costs quite a bit, depending on what you need. So if you hit a wall because of gear (the reason I quit this game), you're gonna find yourself grinding for materials for your gear and then for money to buy the recipes for said gear.

It would also help if the game had an interesting story, but it's just your typical anime fantasy fare. Something that can be done right, but the characters are so stock and the story is so out of nowhere that it's not easy to invest in. I also didn't care for the Japanese voice cast and found myself muting the game due to a little elf girl early on in the game (she's the first character you meet...joy...). I'll give the game credit, the characters are designed farely well, but again, their looks don't make up for the fact that they are pretty boring all around. My favorite guy was the purple ogre dude, who also had the common courtesy to not speak very often.

I can't think of any games I've played on Steam that are like this off the top of my head, but if you want some good tactics games, look for Final Fantasy Tactics Advance (GBA) or any Fire Emblem game. Those games are awesome!

The one decent aspect of this game is the battle system. It's relatively unique and revolves around setting up and moving your characters on the board in order to set up "links" between them. These links allow you to chain attacks, trigger special attacks, and provide0other bonuses to your characters. It's a fun system that you can play around with for a little while. However, every single map is exactly the same, so prepare for boredom to set in pretty quickly.

The real problem is that this game has some of the laziest writing I've ever encountered. There are so many characters in the game and yet not a single one really stands out in any fashion. Each can be boiled down to a basic stereotype ("silent, brooding guy" "ladies man" etc) and are forgotten as soon as they leave your party. Most of the interactions feel completely contrived and feel like they were written by someone who has never actually interacted with a human being before. What little story there is mostly uniteresting and bland. The plot spans five total generations, which is an interesting concept that makes me wish the execution had been better.
