In GODUS, you are brilliantly creative, terrifyingly powerful and above all else, worshipped unconditionally by your followers. You are their god. GODUS is a delightful reinvention of the god game from 22cans and Peter Molyneux, who created the genre. In development for PC, Mac and mobile.

With so much going on here at the studio right now, we’ve a bit of a bumper update for you. Sit back and we’ll take you through all our latest comings and goings.

Version 3.1 for iOS and v2.3.1 for Steam out today
We are releasing an incremental update for both the iOS and Steam versions of Godus today so as to address the recent issues that a few of our players had been experiencing when trying to launch the game, along with other various bug fixes.

As always, if ever you run into any unexpected problems with the game, please contact our dedicated Tech Support team via

Here’s a list of notable changes due in today’s new build:
  • Expiration of Facebook token fix causing freeze on launch (iOS)
  • Fix for info panel crash in tutorial section
  • Fix for crash on load for players with very large number temples
  • Shortened intro video to reduce game’s memory footprint

Godus for Android
As you may have noticed from our recent weekly dev activity updates, we’re currently working on bringing Godus to Android for all devices equivalent to the Samsung Galaxy S3 and above. We’ve been making great headway and we’re looking forward to releasing Godus on the Google Play store towards the middle of next month, in time for Thanksgiving.

The Android release of Godus incorporates all the exciting elements featured in the latest version of the game for iOS and Steam. Now Android players will also be able to advance their growing civilization into the recently released Frontier Age, where they can look forward to exploring Weyworld, a vast land with all-new challenges, unique surroundings and fresh mysteries to uncover.

Peter & Jack answer your questions
Recently, over on our Steam forums, long-time contributor Gmr Leon kindly collated a bunch of questions from around the Mac & PC community asking for detailed insight on the current state of the game and our intentions for the future.

With no question too daunting, Peter and Jack set about answering each questions as fully and thoroughly as possible. You can find the results in the three videos below.
They had such a good time answering these questions that we’ve already gone ahead and started recording a follow-up Q&A session, which we hope to share with you later this week.

Balance File Editor & Steamworks integration coming this Friday
Lastly, but my no means leastly, we will be releasing the Balance File Editor to the Opt-in Branch of Steam on Friday of this week.

Our one and only Pavle ‘Big Thunder’ Mihajlovic is hard at work finishing up the tool to make it ready for public use. It’s no understatement to say that we can’t wait to see what you make of it when you start sharing your balance files with each other via Steamworks!

That’s all for today, but as ever we’d love for you to join in the discussion on Facebook, Twitter, reddit and our forums – see you on the boards!

Welcome to Weyworld - Frontier Age Arrives on Steam

Today we’re releasing the first major expansion for Godus, extending the game by introducing a whole new land to explore, full of mystery and unique surroundings.

With this expansive and game-changing update, you’ll be tasked with building a massive Ark, filling it with your tiny, adoring Followers and setting sail for Weyworld - an undiscovered land just waiting to be explored. In Weyworld you will find new secrets to uncover, rival tribes to meet and a host of new god-like abilities to unlock.

Additionally, we have redesigned the Voyages mini-game to give you new ways to play and win unique rewards to decorate your world.

The lost Ark
Your people long to move to a new land and to do this, you must help them build an Ark for their journey across uncharted waters. This Ark will take all the Followers who worked on it to a new land called Weyworld, along with huge amount of resources – 500 Ore and 700 Wheat, to be precise.

Building this Ark is no easy feat and will take a considerable amount of time and resources to complete. Once ready, it will carry up to 500 of your Followers on the voyage to Weyworld. Don’t worry, even though this is a one-way migration for your seafaring Followers, as their almighty god you will be able to return to Homeworld whenever you choose via the Lighthouse.

Weyworld is waiting
Once the Ark arrives at Weyworld, your first task will be to house all the Followers aboard in new abodes unique to this land.

You’ll quickly notice that Weyworld has its own distinctive visual style – it’s a desert world where the trees and rocks you’re familiar with in Homeworld are replaced by cacti and baked earth. That’s not the only difference, however – in Weyworld, crops need to be built on verdant land and mines on rugged land if your want them to flourish and your Followers to prosper.

You’ll also find a third type of terrain – hallowed ground. Here you will be able to build monasteries of various sizes – while these produce no workers, they do generate an awful lot of belief!

Your wayfaring Followers aren’t the first to call Weyworld home – you’ll discover three tribes of mischievous Astari up to their usual tricks. The Astari have hidden an enormous treasure in Weyworld and it’s up to you to claim it for your Followers.

Enter the Frontier Age
Weyworld ushers in the Frontier Age, bringing with it a new Timeline and new cards for you to unlock with new stickers. All the cards you would have unlocked in Homeworld will be active in Weyworld - any cards not unlocked can be completed by returning to Homeworld.

Some of the new abilities you’ll earn will enhance your Followers’ lives and others will increase your own godly powers – here’s a few that you’ll discover in the new world:
  • Blue skiesby your will the skies shall remain bright and clear. Storms will occur less frequently.
  • Stormy weatherkeep the skies angry by your wrath! Storms will appear more frequently.
  • Cometblast apart layers of granite with these celestial projectiles.
  • Enhanced meteorsthere’s nothing like a good meteor strike to vent your divine wrath… and now they’re even more powerful!
  • Epic sculptingunlock the ability to sculpt even more layers of terrain at once.
  • Dig Downunlock the ability to dig directly downwards by double-tapping/clicking.
  • Fleet of Foota healthy diet and plenty of exercise lead to fitter and faster Followers.
  • Crop rotationyour Farmers develop wonderful new agricultural techniques and fields now produce much more Wheat.
More Voyages, redesigned Voyages
We’ve refined the gameplay for Voyages in this update – you no longer have to complete a Voyage within a limited amount of time. However, the more quickly you complete a Voyage, the more points you’ll earn. What do points mean? Points mean prizes! The higher your score in a Voyage, the more stars you’ll complete for it, with a total of three stars available for each Voyage.

We’ve also added a new series of Voyages with this update, called Spooky Shores – earning a high score in these Voyages will unlock a slew of suitably-spooky Halloween themed content, such as creepy masks for your Followers or eerie graves for your Settlements.

Future updates
We still have plenty left in store to bring to Weyworld and the Frontier Age.

Future updates will add an area that’s home to a new rival tribe along with sheep that roam the land, as well as for the game’s dynamic water to turn previously barren lands into fertile plains.

Coming soon to PC & Mac - Balance File Editor & Steamworks integration
We have some very good news for everyone playing Godus on Steam for Mac and Windows PC – the hotly anticipated Balance File Editor we first detailed in this blog is confirmed to be released on Friday 31st October.

This tool will allow you modify how many aspects of the game behave, from wait timers to Belief generation and more besides. Thanks to Steamworks integration, you’ll also be able to share and swap your personalised balance files with each other also with us here at 22cans. We’ll be looking at the best and most popular balance changes you develop with a view to implementing them based on your feedback ahead of when Godus transitions out of Early Access and into full release.

Set sail for new discoveries!
You can download the Frontier Age update for Godus on the main branch of Steam right now just by launching the game. We’re looking forward to hearing what you make of all this new content on Facebook, Twitter, Reddit and our forums – see you around!

Cross-platform development

Our development proceeds through sprints that may have differing platform focuses. As such, much of the gameplay available to you in v2.2 is the result of a recent mobile-focused sprint and we intend to progress to a PC-focused sprint within the coming months. Please take this into consideration, as while adjustments will continue to be made to the PC platform to account for the game's differing payment model (buy-to-play on PC & free-to-play on mobile), some areas of balance and design may retain certain elements of the mobile version for the time being.

When I first got this game I was hooked. I would have recommended it in a heartbeat to anyone who showed an interest in it. I even bought a copy for a good friend of mine so he could play it too. We even had PvP matches in the now removed multiplayer side of the game.

The game is not what I paid for anymore. I did not pay for a mobile touch screen game. The fact that 22cans have gone this route with Godus has made me play it less. I used to spend hours on end playing until it was changed to this mobile style.

Just take a look at this old screenshot which shows a few features I miss from the game:

Features like flags on buildings to show when they are full that wave in the direction of the wind!
And a follower who is named after a friend who I beat in multiplayer PvP match.
Not to mention the better looking buildings with more variety.
The side bar of skills was easier to use than the current system.
How about the other races, like the ginger hair race or the mountain men. Now we are just us and the Astari :/

And have a look at this old screenshot too, the larger towns created using a statue with actual roads:

Just these 2 screenshots alone show how far backwards the mobile style game took. So much variety removed to make it 'more suitable' for the mobile devices.

Again, I did not pay for a mobile game. I feel like I was cheated out of my money, led to believe I was getting a cool game that I actually enjoyed playing only to have it taken away from me and replaced with an inferior substistute, not worth even half what I paid for, that mobile users can play for free!
I get the feeling that this is what 22cans intended from the start, get our money and use it to launch themselves into the mobile gaming market.

For this I can not recommend Godus anymore. It's a sad case as I loved how it was going before they took the mobile route :(

At the time of this review, Godus is basically just a freemium mobile game that has had the pay aspects very sloppily pulled out.

Nearly everything is timer based, which is aggravating to say the least. Sculpting burns through your "belief" resource like crazy bananas, so you get to spend a lot of time not playing the game while waiting for more belief to spawn. Of course you can spend gems on belief and other resources, but to do that you have to sacrifice your people to the pit of doom, and wait about an hour or so for them to respawn. Oh, and forget about dragging your followers from the far reaches of your civilization into the one and only pit of doom- IF the buggy controls dont end up guiding all your little people to some random spot on the map you didn't intend, they'll have routing issues and just get stuck until you kill them.
Having to wait an entire day for a farming colony to spawn a farmer is just frustrating as all get out. One would think with all the 'pay x gems now to do y' they would have included an option to fill a settlement with workers in exchange for gems but nope. You get to wait.
Voyages are frustrating annoying mini-games, which I honestly can't tell if they're broken or not for me as I completed one and then could no longer access the menu to it.
There is no easy in game option to restart the game fresh, you have to manually locate the save. A minor nuisance, but still.
The graphics could be better- I prefer to play most god-like games zoomed out for a better overview but it doesn't like to render that far out.
The unlock cards though gameplay mechanic seems straightforward but NOPE. You don't actually unlock the feature on the card until you put enough matching stickers on it- oh and you can use gems to buy more stickers.

I actually do enjoy the sculpting aspect, despite it's quite buggy nature. However having to wait for hours for enough belief to actually do it is annoying.

It's only playable if you only spend 15-20 minutes on it here and there, since the timers elapse in real time. That said, I'm glad I got it on sale for really cheap because it is NOT worth the 20+ dollars they're asking. It's still considered "early access" and it says only 52% complete so... here's hoping they fix it so it's more of a real game and not just a gutless imitation of a pay model. Until then, it's not worth more than 5 bucks.

Repetitive and boring, if somewhat relaxing at the start. This is basically a free-to-play mobile game with some minor changes to accommodate the paying PC player.

Last year i had actually written a review for this game giving it a massve thumbs up. However the direction of development now means I am doing a complete 180.

Dont get this game at present. The game revolves around you playing god. A god that can sculpt the landscape, direct your people to build things, mine resources, breed, erect great temples and use your godly powers to sent great balls of fire and brimstone upon your enemies.

Sounds awesome right? Well it would be if not for the fact that the base of this game now has it foundations on the Mobile phone version, so huge F2P elements.

Anything you need to do requires a resource called belief, which is generated by your followers in their houses, which you have to wait for....up to 30 minutes in some cases. So build more houses, so you get more belief right?

Yeah but that would require an abundence of belief in the first place, which you dont have, to speed up building you need to direct followers to the area you want to build on which, you guessed it, costs belief.

Hey maybe take a ship sailing and play the mini game whilst you wat? No that requires followers in which you have to wait for.....yet more belief.

To be honest the whole premise of waiting to play is beyond belief.

Dont get this game. You will be sorry.

I will ammend this review as they make changes....if I can ever be bothered to to boot it up again.

I want to like this game. I also want to play it. But the game doesn't want me to play, it wants me to wait, and watch the timers. Thats not the game that was advertized. Its only 50% done, so there is still hope. but not much.

Build your town
Guide your followers
Scultpt the landscape
Play cool sculpting senarios

Construction is timer limited
Guiding your followers costs resources that are timer limited
Sulpting the landscape costs resources that are timer limited
The Senarios are timer gated, limiting the number of senarios you can complete at a time.
The currency used to speed up the game is timer limited and reduces generation of all other timer limited resources.

When I'm playing the game, I'd give it an 8/10 would recomend.

When I'm not playing the game but have it open, I'd give it a 0/10 would not recomend

Bought this game because i was a huge fan of Black&White. Its not black&white at all. Spend hours clicking on all the abodes to collect belief, that you'll spend in 2 minutes while you reshape a tiny portion of the landscape. The game knows this is the case, which is why the game itself recommends you constantly do other things when you run out of belief to do what you want.

You'll spend most of your time with upkeep after the storms start coming... and the devs act like thats a good thing, since you've run out of belief and cant do anything else.

Godus: 13 months later

Godus is a LOT better than it was when it was first made available on Steam, but it still has a long way to go, and I'm not sure it's going to survive the trip.

I will not expound on the soul-crushing gameplay issues that were rampant in version 1.x.x of the game, as many of them have been fixed. The issue now seems to be one of...waiting.

I have never seen a game that requires quite this much waiting. You will not notice it so much in the first 10 to 20 minutes of play, but as the hours go on, you will find yourself collecting your belief, sacrificing your followers for gems, sending out builders to contruct new buildings, sculpting a tiny piece of your land, then realizing you have 45-60 minutes (!!!) to wait until you can do anything else, because you need to wait for more followers to spawn, more belief to generate, and for those buildings to finish contruction. Once, the game told me I would have to wait over A DAY for another farmer to spawn.

In the developer commentary, they say that you should use this time to go "treasure hunting" or on voyages, but there is only one available (very short) voyage right now, and treasure hunting for stickers takes all of 5 minutes...if you have enough Belief to move the land around looking, and if you don't, you have to come back in a couple hours so it can generate.

Compound that with the fact that ore takes five real-time hours to mine, wheat takes one real-time hour to farm, and some buildings take upwards of 20 minutes to contruct, and that is AFTER the speed-build card has been unlocked. I wonder if by the time we reach the space age, the shuttle will take 10 real-time years to build! When it comes to belief, the larger buildings only generate it once every several hours. The smaller buildings make it faster, but they make so little that you end up waiting just as long for it to generate several times so you have enough to actually sculpt something. I often found myself doing everything I could, minimizing the game, then doing something else for an hour or two, just to re-open the game, do my "chores", and minimize it again.

If the ridiculous wait times were removed, I think Godus would be a lot more fun, but it would still be a very shallow game. It feels skinner box-ish, and there is a real lack of any need for strategic thought. It doesn't really matter where or how you build your settlements, where those wheat fields or mines go, or just how often you sacrifice followers, just as long as you have enough belief to place a swamp in the Astari camp so they all drown when they try to party.

Godus as it stands now is little more than a web-browser game that was obviously designed with a pay-to-not-wait mechanic in mind, not unlike Farmville. It's playable in its current state, but only for 15 minute windows among hours or days of waiting.

I didn't think that a game by Peter Molyneux could possibly deserve the poor reviews, so when Humble had the game on sale, I bought it to see for myself.

How wrong I was.

There are so many reviews summing up the poor aspects of the game, but overall - for me - the one thing that sticks out most is the fact that the game was unceremoniously dumped onto the PC market in its mobile app form. With the exception of buying items for real world money, there appears to be no difference between the two versions of the game - no thought has been given to the difference of the platforms or the gamers.

Certainly, the game is early access, and who knows, may actually improve if pigs start flying. There are many early access games that are less developed (apparently Godus is currently 51% complete), cheaper and still far superior than this.

For the person who brought us Populous, Fable and Black & White, this is not a game to be proud of.

Certainly not worth the £14.99 current cost and not even worth the £4.89 I paid.

LISTEN TO THE OTHER REVIEWS! This is a waste of money and time. This game plays like a mobile game and requires you to continually log in to do well. Buildings and upgrades are in real time and can take HOURS. Its entertaining for the first few minutes until buildings and upgrades start taking time and you run into this mobile game time funnel. Uninstalled this garbage after 2 horrendous, eternity-like hours.

If you're into minimizing/window'ing games and letting them play themselves for dozens of real time minutes while you play an actual game, then this is for you.

The creator commentary even suggests you go do something else while " X " is happening, and to check back later.
Not my cup of tea, complete and utter shash.

The only way I can see this game moving forward is to scrap it and start again.

If you think that "the regenesis of the god game", the genre that contains industry defining games, made by the person who started it all (you know, the one who oversells his ideas), should be a mobile game, then buy this on iOS.

I've been following this game ever since the Kickstarter. I saw promise with this. It left as soon as I started playing.

Ok, enough vague statements. Here is why I am annoyed with this.

1. Waiting. You can only play the game for around 5 minutes before you have to wait 2 hours to be able to do anything again. That's not how you engage your players.

2. Dual currency. Yes, I know. You've stated many times how there will be no microtransactions in the Pc version. Could you at least redesign the second currency so that it is not obnoxious? All you've done is remove the payment part. The only way to get more Gems is to screw yourself over.

This isn't the regenesis of the god game, this is the death of it.

If you're thinking of buying this, please don't.

It's got an awesome design, visually speaking. It's very artsy — At least to me. I like the look. Sure it's not the latest & greatest graphically, but it's different, it's fun, and it's artistic. It feel appropriate for the type of game and the in game setting.

But the game is boring. Not because it's slow but because it's overly repetative. Morph the land to build more and to earn more followers and then expand more, oh look a piece of treasure, now expand more land... inch by inch I might add. I'ts mind numbing, it's boring, it's slow.

I don't honesly like leaving a bad review or a negative rating, let alone on a game that is still in Early Access, but it's just not there for me.

The great Populous idea killed by boring and meaningless gameplay.

With over 60 hours played... I cannot reccomend this game. It has a lot of gating that prevents progression. You could say this is a form of extending content... like a mini-game that requires a level of random luck to the point that a 5 minute mini game is 5 hours of frustration: aka not a good thing. Collecting stickers is a lot less about fun and more about "I need these... and I need way more of these the longer I play." Voyages are a crutch at best. None of them are as fun as conflicts/battles of an earlier build were.

For being an all powerful diety it takes forever to do anything, especially shape land. The limits and costs on land shaping are a barrier even late in the game. It makes you feel less all powerful nad more like someone forced to do tedious tasks over and over for the sake of people that don't often seem too thankful and already need you to tell them to do anything for them to actually do anything.

Best played in short stints if you do buy.

There's some interesting stuff here, but it doesn't have much of an effect on game play. Right now, it's a bit of farmville meets hidden object. It's just not fun. Digging for chests is a hassel after the first few, the voyages are more stressful than strategic, and developing your village takes too long.

Also, please don't use the term "breeder". It's a derogatory term for a straight person here in the US. Even if you're just applying it to your female characters (hence the pink shirts), that's still not right.

Review based on Godus as of October 8th, 2014:

Don't want to read? Have a moderate amount of free time? This review comes in video form!

At the moment, Godus is very much a mobile game with the Free-to-Play elements cut out. After an initial ease-in period, most of the game's content is locked behind time gates. Some of these gates are more annoying than others, but it all pushes the game towards a very slow, very stilted pace. Collecting belief and wheat and other reasources has a rather fun, tactile flow to it, but the wait for these payouts is so long that you'll rarely be interested in actually hanging around in-game for them to pop up.

There are definitely some fun elements to the game, such as the competition between your people and the indigenous, party-loving race that threatens to lure your villagers away with promises of good times. However, every good idea seems to come with some small caveat that hinders full enjoyment of them. In the case of the inter-racial rivalry, the problem is that it continues to simulate even when you aren't playing, meaning you could come back from taking a break from your tribe only to find that everyone got bored of waiting for you and jumped ship, leaving you with scores of empty houses and a tanked happiness rating.

If you want a game that you'll pop onto for a few minutes to an hour at a time to gather resources and make minimal land gains, or something that you can leave on in the background while you play other games, work, or slack off watching youtube videos about games you may or may not be interested in buying, then this game might be right for you. Otherwise? Give it a while. It's in early access yet, and 22Cans claim to have some incredibly interesting plans for the future. If they can't deliver in the end, then nothing wasted. If they do, (and I really do hope that they can) then you won't have burned yourself out on a lesser version prior to release.

A note: In its current state, as a game, Godus is not worth its $20 asking price. However, if you're interested in following the development process of an ambitious (and probably overly so) title backed by some very passionate people, it might be worth it for you in order to follow the game along. That's a very big, very tentative 'might', however.
