Reviews

8/10 – Keza MacDonald, IGN

Über dieses Spiel

Thomas Was Alone, and then, Well, he Wasn't

This would be a fun puzzle game even without the narration/story, but personally I think it's is a great addition

-Unique concept
-Good graphics
-Challenging puzzles
-Interesting story
-Round characters (even though they're rectangles)

Overall this game is awesome and I would recomend buying it, especially if it is on sale

I found it very confusing, that I grew sympathies for blocks with personalities.
The gameplay itself is simple, but addiciting.
And even if this game is simple in its graphic, it has a very emogional impact on the players,
as they progress through the story, and listen to the monologues from the narrator, who brings you the blocks closer.
All in all, the story is about friendship, loyalty, but also of betrayal, and it is told with colored blocks!
I have never had this experience before, and I think, will never get again, but it was very entertaninig, to play this game.
It has some sort of magic, that I found in other Indie-games, but its minimalistic optics made it so special.

A puzzle game that makes simple shapes endearing.

The rate that the difficulty increases is spot on; you always know what went wrong so you want to keep going, rather than rage-quit. I wasn't super-fond of the puzzles that relied on timing but they were few. This would be a good game for people who usually find puzzle games frustrating but want to experience the I'm-so-clever feels.

I feel really bored playing this game.As a puzzle game, the puzzles are easy even for kindergarten kids. Also the plot narration lasts too short for me as a non-native English speaker that I have no time and no other way to relook at it except replaying the scenarios. It's overrated too much for the same price as Undertale,I simply do not reccomend you to buy it at full price.

Who would have thought rectangles could be so emotional! This is a really simple and fun game with characters who have more personality than those in many of the big name games. Thomas has made being a rectangle wayyyy cooler than being a square.

This game is certainly not the average platformer. The trailer above doesn't even begin to do enough to showcase how beautiful this game truly is; this is a piece of art. The levels and mechanics are very beautiful (although I definitely recommend playing this with a controller as it is not mouse compatible) and show off a simplistic playtime that allows the player to engage with the storyline instead of having to remember what buttons to push to activate certain abilities. The entire game runs off of 3 buttons, and this is regardless of whatever way you wish to play (i.e. Keyboard or controller).

Beyond the simplified play style sits a magnificently written storyline that takes the player through a perilous journey about a small block named Thomas and why he was alone. We do not only meet Thomas, however, but his bevy of friends as well. Each block has a name and a distinct personality that personifies them. You will begin playing as jumping blocks, and end playing as humanized objects that have feelings and are working towards their dreams. This story has action, humor, romance, death, life, enemies, and piece of your heart you had no idea was even missing.

If you are even thinking about buying this game, then I seriously suggest doing that exactly.

Thomas Was Alone is a textbook example for subtractive game design. It has exactly the elements it needs and none more. Every level is a purposeful examination of the given game mechanics; nothing repeats, nothing is unnecessary.

Thomas is a red rectangle. His skills comprise falling and jumping, which are the perfect requirements for a 2D Platformer. But in contrast to most modern games of that genre, TWA abstains from more movement mechanics, like wall jumps or dashing. TWA builds entirely on jumping. It tries different variations of jumping: high jumps, double jumps and jumping with reversed gravity. Later in the game, various combinations and switching attributes on the run are explored.
Every new game element is carefully introduced. The first level is a short movement from left to right, in the second level you fall down several platforms and the third tells you how to jump and drops you in front of a staircase.

Other rectangles join Thomas on his way. Each of them has an own shape and set of skills, and the player has to switch between them to make use of their abilities.
Laura for example is flat and can be used as trampoline by other characters, to reach higher places. On the other hand, her jump doesn't reach very high, so you may need to build a staircase with the other rectangles.
Again every skill is introduced and then built upon in following levels. The player has to combine the different characters, stack them to extend a jump or push buttons to help the others.

The rectangles journey is accompanied by a narrator, voiced by Danny Wallace, who also intones characters direct speech — just like an audio book reader does.
Wallace manges to breathe life into the colored rectangles. He shows off, that you don't need elaborate cutscenes or even realistic character models, to tell a charming while predictable friendship story. The rectangles are quirky and likeable, from the cynical Chris to the energetic Sarah.

The game is a concentrated experience. There is nothing you could take away without hurting it in one way or the other. In a time where many games seem to padded with sidequest and loaded with useless features, it was a joy to play such a refined game as TWA is. I'm a harsh critic with games that don't value my time as much as I do, so I feel a need to particularly praise TWA for its well thought out content. It took me less than 3 hours to finish the game, and it was worth every minute.

"Thomas Was Alone" is simplistic & challenging with a great narrative. This is another one of those games, every gamer should experience. Yes it's short (less then 3 hours to 100%) but this is still worth the $9.99. I bought & played it twice(PS3 & Steam). I don't regret it at all.

Though this game seems like an incredible example of simplistic design that still manages to hold its own, I didn't enjoy it as much as I should have. The jump controls would often not do what I want, which was incredibly fristrating at times. And I did not really find the narrative to be all that charming.

Big praise to the designers and all, but this game was just too vanilla for me.

Style bifurcates the audience and discussion rarely occurs. Any opinion of THOMAS WAS ALONE can be balanced out rather equally with another and both would be valid.

As character driven THOMAS WAS ALONE somewhat succeeds. Each quadrilateral's personality matches how they play. The titular Thomas is curious and so exhibits a middle ground in abilities, while Chris is cynical and jumps less and is shorter. This small addition is surprisingly effective at quickly giving more to what could've been a nice but forgotten game.

The addition of the narration and score adds an extra atmosphere that is comfortable and keeps interest.

By extension the gameplay is simple enough for anyone one to understand. Moving, jumping, and changing characters. The modest set up is really exploited to where the different abilities of the characters mix well together and mostly feel like a team effort as using multiple rectangles together to the end can feel really rewarding. The problem is that after each mechanic is introduced the game's difficulty really flatlines, apart from a rare challenge.

The flat and simple design of THOMAS WAS ALONE works well with what the game tries to achieve with the characters, literally being 2D is appropriate. As stated Chris is cylincal, this is empahised by the small design of his character, this is extended to all of the characters. Except that the story demands more from the game than it ever really delivers.

Unfortunately, the two stories are more of a convience than anything: the one played out between the rectangles, and them as out of control AI. This is the main conflict, apart from the absolute lack of pacing by the rather flat difficulty or any dramatic stylistic change at all. As being AI they are more than just programs and half-way through nearly all the personalities of the characters change, yet this is not a more natural change (which appropriate for only one character) and the narration in the second half seems more sparse. Neither do the mechanics change to match the new personalities which seems strange for this game. In addition, this change can be seen as a failed subversion of achieving the style.

However, THOMAS WAS ALONE one can be forgiven to forget the underwhelmign story as all the other parts are presented so well that it is a game worth playing.

Originally, I was pretty skeptical of this game due to the supposed simplistic nature of it; however, I was pleasently surprised to find that Thomas Was Alone is a lot more complex than it seems. Besides being a stellar puzzle game, Thomas Was Alone actually has a very interesting story--which is not neccessarily integral to the game since it's first and foremost a puzzle game, yet adds something extra to the experience. Surprisingly for a game about various shapes, the plot actually makes you care about orange squares and red rectangles. The music is also pretty fantastic as well.

All-in-all, I really enjoyed it. If you're on the fence about it, I'd say go for it. If you love puzzle games, this is among some of the best puzzle games I've played. I bought it while it was on sale for $2.99, but I would say it is worth the usual cost.

So my doctor said I should start feeling my feelings instead of taking out my anger on random passersby. I tried painting but the paintbrush kept getting stuck in peoples eyes when they would say things like hello, or whats that supposed to be. I tried bird watching but all the birds fly away from me. After many fantastic failures of hobbies I happened upon Thomas on the Interwebs and its changed my life. When I first bought the game I didn't expect it to make me laugh cry and of course get the feels. Now I shower most everyday and haven't got a single assault charge since. 10/10 will hang out with thomas again

Forgive me for writing this review so much later than I played the game. I simply forgot to write one after I played it in the past. But here it goes.

Thomas Was Alone is a pretty fun game where you play as "blocks" that much get to places. Thats the gist of the game. However, it is suplemmented by appropriate art, a rather good narration, and fun gameplay. When I say blocks, I mean you can play as many different kind of blocks and the difficulty increases as the game goes on as expected. For this type of game, I don't remember me ever having any problems with it so I'd say this game was very well done. Overall, worth the play and the time. You'll enjoy it.

This is a great example to show that with proper story setting and voice narration to build characters, even a minimalist pixel platformer could get you emotionally involved.
Love those little dot guys.

Oh, yes, and I forgot to say about the charming music.

It may not be a 10/10 perfect game, the platformer gameplay itself is...well designed but not outstanding.
And some stages after the story ending could be a little bit frustrating.
But still, it deserves a thumb up.
Recommended especially when it's on sale and you just have 3-5 hours to spare.

Very minimalistic, charming platformer. Not too difficult, but definitely gets more challenging towards the end. The narration is nice and the story is pretty cute. Not too long of a game, can be finished in about 3 or 4 hours. Great for when you come back from work and want to just play a game for 15 minutes, or you can just finish it in one sitting. The narrative is also very interesting which might be something hard to find in these kind of games. In the end you start to know the "blocks" not only by their color but for their personality and the way each block plays is actually accurate with the description given by the narrator.

Overview

Thomas Was Alone is a thought-provoking puzzle platformer created from the mind of Mike Bithel. The game originally started as a flash game back in 2010, before slowly making its way to Steam and console systems a few years later. As the player, you control Thomas-AT-23-6-12, or Thomas for short, an artificial polygon that has taken on a form of free thinking and is now questioning the world around him. As you progress the levels, you'll encounter and control several other characters, each with their own shape, narrated personality and unique ability to help you guide your way to the end of each level.

The story takes place within a computer mainframe that is run by a company known as "Artificial Life Solutions". Due to a glitch in the mainframe or some other unknown error, several of the polygon AI have become suddenly self-aware and see the computer mainframe as the world in which they live. Each newly aware shape takes on a different personality: some more eager than the rest, one a little more scared than the others, while one is just worried about being used for her ability and another just wants to be a superhero. While every character is narrated by a single person (Danny Wallace), each personality is as different as the shapes they come in; Mr. Wallace does a phenomenal job.

Each shape's ability needs to be used to some degree to reach the end of the level: some jump higher than others, some float in water, some are tall, some are small, some defy gravity...etc. It is your job to guide these guys to the end. As you progress the story, you'll meet a new cast of characters, new puzzles to solve and more about the world Thomas and gang live in. There's a bit more to the story than first impressions realize and it's an intriguing story to flesh out over the course of the game. In total, there are ten segments of the game to play through, each with ten levels per segment.

The difficulty of Thomas Was Alone consists of a very fine, gradual learning curve. The game does not suffer from issues of spiking difficulties or unfair level design, which gives the game a very mellow tone alongside the pleasant narration, making it a fun experience, not a frustrating one. I'm not the greatest platformer around, so if I can do it, you can too. ^_-

In the end, Thomas Was Alone is a light-hearted joy to experience. I'd dive more into the plot, but I don't want give away spoilers for those that have yet to play the game and have been lucky enough to not spoil it for themselves. You'll have to find out what has happened to Thomas and his friends, how have they become sentient, what are the "shifters", what's the pixel cloud about and who are the "Architects?

There's always something a game can improve on, but I feel hard-pressed to pinpoint what exactly I would change about this one. The positives truly do outshine any issues I did experience while playing it.

Pros

  • Narration - It's beautiful, it's calm and it's intriguing. I don't know how else to say it. I loved it.
  • Character development - This is by and large the only game I've played that made me feel physical emotion towards geometric shapes. I genuinely developed feelings for them.
  • It's an easy game to complete for those who like to achievement hunt.
  • Difficulty - It felt very fluid throughout and never suffered from spikes or drops in difficulty at unforeseen times.

Cons

  • Game length - It's short and leaves me wanting more.

Overall, Thomas Was Alone is a gem. I purchased this game on a whim a while ago based on other reviewers and was pleasantly surprised with it. The story is charming, the levels are fun, the characters are unique and interesting (even as colorful shapes that don't speak) and it all flows so seamlessly together. There are very few games I play more than once, especially when I complete them entirely, but Thomas Was Alone is definitely one of them. Check it out if you have not done so already! It's worth the try.

Genuinely clever and minimalistic platformer.
Firstly, you think, of something like a browser game, and you could be a bit disappointed.

But as you play just some few minutes, the brilliance of the game jumps over to you, without any doubt.
The game mechanics. is nothing new - but how it all is executed - and more important from gameplay point -with all the different squares - every with its own traits and powers - makes the whole game a very special platformer experience - that one really enjoy, because it's not that kind of rage platformer (Super Meat boy etc) - there arent enemies you only can die of surroundings, and that only on some levels.

Also, what adds to the whole experience, is that very fine narrator, that makes his so awesomely well - it reaches the class of a Wheatley (okay, he is not really a narrator), The Stanley Parable - or Bastion. Also, of more importance, the dialogues are very cleverly satirical chosen - and one will have more than just a laugh :D
Its really awesome, to see how this rightly executed - can add so immense to the whole product.

The controls are very fine (keys & 360 controller) - and the game never feels like it has broken control - or is not reacting to your inputs. You always feel in control over your squares.

The presentation is minimalistic, but still has its special effects (unity engine) - so it fits a 100% to the game (idea).
I recommend this highly, to everybody who can play a game even/also if it hasnt that AAA looks, especially when you are a hound for indies. Its like good karma.
