Development Diary - The End of Days

Hello all, once again I am here to tell you about the horrors wonders of <Secret DLC>! Today the subject is our new narrative events. We have added two new chains of events, the first being the titular End of Days chain(s).

The concept behind the EoD events are that your people have become scared and uncertain and this has given rise to various doomsayers and general unrest. Possible results of this include:

  • The rise of a Prophet of Doom, who is convinced the world will end if he doesn’t overthrow your rule.
  • A general belief that the dead have returned to walk the earth and attack the living.
  • Panic based on a solar eclipse, which is surely the herald of the End Times.

These events are somewhat rare, and each possible doom has several ways to resolve it, for better or for worse, so we hope you will find them rather interesting should they appear.

The other chain we have added is The quest for Eternal Life. Much as I encouraged you to do in an earlier DD, characters in CK may find themselves contemplating their mortality, and as rulers of realms they have rather more resources available to them than you or I. The quest for Eternal Life is long, dangerous, and prone to failure, but when the possible reward is the ability to defy Death… well, you can see why people may undertake it anyway.

That’s all for now, next week I will go into detail about our new Maimed traits.

Development Diary #8 Life goes on

Hello again. Last week I told you about the horrors of the Plague and your inevitable death, but so you don’t fall into total despair I’ll tell you some steps you can take to delay giving the Reaper his due.

The first and most immediate defense against Epidemics is to go into Seclusion. This is somewhat similar to going into Hiding, but in this case you Seclude your entire court in your castle (or capital holding of your choice). Seclusion is a very effective way to stop disease getting into your castle… provided, of course, that you don’t bring in anyone who is already infected. While in Seclusion there are unique events which deal with such things as; interpersonal conflict or bonding, angry people outside who want in, food shortages, murder, and maybe even a little cannibalism. Only a little! Happy DD, happy DD…

Another, longer term defense is to build Hospitals. Hospitals are a new holding type, built in the same way as Trade posts or Forts. Their primary effect is to make the chance of an Epidemic breaking out or spreading to the province less likely. Hospitals can have several buildings built within them, which mostly serve to increase the Disease Defense level, but Leper Colonies can also lower revolt risk.

평가

“...playing is winning, and there’s something quite satisfying about leading your house to power and glory through whatever means you can, for as long as you can.”
9,5/10 – Strategy Informer

“In short, Crusader Kings II is a majestic feudal sandbox, the greatest generator of hilarious medieval soap opera ever created and Paradox Interactive’s best title to date.”
90/100 – IncGamers

“It's perfectly possible to have made a few too many enemies, anger the Pope and find most of Europe out for your blood. That's really what makes the game so damn fun.”
9/10 – Destructoid

게임에 대해

The Dark Ages might be drawing to a close, but Europe is still in turmoil. Petty lords vie against beleaguered kings who struggle to assert control over their fragmented realms. The Pope calls for a Crusade to protect the Christians in the Holy Land even as he refuses to relinquish control over the investiture of bishops - and their riches. Now is the time for greatness. Expand your demesne and secure the future of your dynasty. Fill your coffers, appoint vassals, root out traitors and heretics, introduce laws and interact with hundreds of nobles, each with their own agenda.
A good lord will always need friends to support him. But beware, as loyal vassals can quickly turn to bitter rivals, and some might not be as reliable as they seem... Stand ready, and increase your prestige until the world whispers your name in awe. Do you have what it takes to become a Crusader King?
Crusader Kings II explores one of the defining periods in world history in an experience crafted by the masters of Grand Strategy. Medieval Europe is brought to life in this epic game of knights, schemes, and thrones...

Key features:

  • Start a game at any point between 1066 and 1337 and play until 1453
  • Pick a Christian lord and make sure his dynasty survives as you play a succession of his descendants through the ages
  • Gain Prestige for every successive character you play, furthering the glory of your Dynasty
  • Expand your feudal domain - and keep it from falling apart
  • Unravel the plots of your courtiers and vassals, each with their own opinions and agendas
  • Take up the Cross and fight the Moor, the Heathen and the Heretic.
  • Defend against the onslaught of the Mongol Horde
  • Struggle with the Pope for control of the bishops
  • Relive the Middle Ages with up to 32 other players in a competitive multiplayer mode

Was King of Norway.
Died.
Start playing as favorite son when he assumes throne.
Legitimized ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ brother starts civil war with me and wins.
Imprisons me.
Releases me from prison after stripping me down to a count.
Unable to start faction to get myself back on throne because only a count.
This sucks.
Sickly younger brother comes of age, immediately starts new civil war for throne, loses, and is imprisoned.
Younger brother dies unmarried in prison.
I inherit his duchy because he has no heirs and start faction to put myself back on throne.
Start another civil war, pretty much all soldiers in Norway are dead from past civil wars.
Call in King of Denmark, to whom I just married my daughter.
Crush ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ brother.
Enjoy being the human sacrifice at the Great Blot you SOB.
Am king again, Norway is leveled but there is no more competition for throne. 10/10.

Pros:
-Good for roleplay
-Reasonably good strategy-wise, with large reverses common (both for good or bad)
-Extremely replayable (espcially with DLC, though the DLC mostly opens new types of characters to play, and is not needed for your first few games)

Cons:
-CPU intensive/runs slow towards the end of a campain
-UI is showing it's age compared to newer Paradox games

I've played this game far more than could be considered healthy. You have to take some time to get a handle on the mechanisms of the game, especially combat. But once you do, the world is at your feat. I've always wanted to be the king of Andalusia or the Emperor of Italy. And now I can, in a fictional yet very lifelike sense.

The only drawback to this game, for me, is that there isn't a clear end-game. I've enjoyed hunting for steam-achievements, but the game only ends when the middle ages are over. Without any specific goal, it becomes dreary after a while. Sadly for me, i've got no more fun achievements left. But i can look back at great ones such as "Empressive" - the achievement for ruling as three consecutive empresses (which is hardly as easy as it sounds).

Also, murdering your spouses when you tire of them can be quite satisfactory.

Valar morghulis

(This Review is mainly based on my experiences playing the Game of Thrones mod for Crusader Kings 2. The key mechanics are the same with some differences here and there to create an authentic experience of Geroge R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire)

“When the sun rises in the west and sets in the east. When the seas go dry and mountains blow in the wind like leaves.“ This is how long it seems to take until a GoT game is made, that satisfies our lust for adventure, epic wars and the great history of Westeros and Essos. And these were also exactly my thoughts until i bought Crusader Kings 2 and started to play the GoT mod. After that I came to the realisation: We already have the perfect game.

Well maybe not entirely perfect. First of all, you can't just download and play CK2. It is quite complex and can be very confusing playing for the first couple of times. There is a tutorial which gives you a very basic grasp of the game but this won't be enough to fully understand all the concepts, mechanics and tools you can use to enjoy the game in it's entirety. There are of course dozens of good and helpful guides and videos out there, which shouldn't be too hard to find. You can get all the crucial information as well as some helpful tricks from these and you most likely will have to consult at least some of them until you are ready to make your very own mark in the books of history.

After overcoming this first obstacle the game really opens up to you. It is your choice if you want to relive the more recent events and play as one of the characters known from the TV series or if you want to go back in time, long before A Game of Thrones took place. You'll never be able to predict the outcome of your game; unexpected events will make every playthrough individual.

Stike fear into the hearts of people when you set sail as Euron Greyjoy. Show the them the might of the dragon when you conquer the world as Aegon Targaryen or take what is rightfully yours as Stannis Baratheon, for the night is dark and full of terros.

Keeping this in mind you still have to accept that you will neither get battles in high end graphics nor action packed gameplay from start to end. But you will get aspects of not only war, but diplomacy, family and intrigue, things other games can't or don't really give you and yet are very key not only to the Game of Thrones franchise. Moreover you will get storytelling in a way lot's of games don't offer to you anymore these days. The kind of storytelling we all did when we were playing as kids and pretended to be knights and heroes: Storytelling that takes place in our heads. CK2 doesn't give you an obvious explanation for everything but it is great fun to search for some subtle hints and make up your own story while playing. This is why CK2 is, even with it's flaws, one of the best strategy games out there. If you are willing to put in some effort and time and if you can deal with a crash or two now and then (this only applies to the mod), then you will probably have a better time playing than Ned had in King's Landing. Or Moon Boy for all I know.

Show them Fire and Blood, make them feel your Fury and remind them, Winter is coming.

This Paradox grand strategy has more depth than any other, at least diplomatically.

Managing a title (whether it be a simple county or a large kingdom) in the dark-medieval ages gives one of the most addicting experiences in the grand strategy genre. You can really invest yourself in your dynasty, expanding it large enough that even your kin become foe. The strategy lies in your court, and how you can cunningly underhand neighboring lords to steal their throne, or how you can assassinate your way into a strategically place succession, or how you can muster your loyal subjects to take lands by force.

This game works amazingly as a casual singleplayer experience, or an engaged multiplayer fiesta.

BONUS FOR FANS OF A SONG OF ICE AND FIRE/GAME OF THRONES:
Crusader Kings II has the single best structure of video game to most accurately simulate the world of Ice and Fire. Medieval Total War 2's GoT mod is held back by its lack of political intrigue and depth, as with Mount and Blade: Warband's GoT mod. However, the CK2:AGoT mod gives the most interactive gaming experience for the Game of Thrones series, guaranteed to be enjoyed by fans of the books and show alike.

10/10

I have played this game longer than any other on my Steam profile and just love it! I have every DLC except the E-books, some soundtracks and the scourge called Conclave. I would definitely recommend buying this game and not just the vanila, but the whole Crusader Kings 2 Collection, just, unless you want an American horde raging through Europe in your late game, disable the Sunset Invasion (assuming you even bought that DLC). I had a lot of frustration with this game earlier. I'd say avoid the Conclave DLC's like the plague!!!! I hate the direction the developers are going with this game. I have upvoted all people who, just like me, bought this game years ago and have spent colossal amounts of time and money, only to see the devepmental team change, and with it- the game that we so used to love. I feel for you guys and agree with giving them a thumbs down. I too hate the shattered retreat gimmick and everything that came with the Conclave DLC...

So why recommend the game then? Simple!

Steam has this option to, sort of, "downgrade" the game to a previous state. To all the people who are furious with the game changes (like me), here's a good solution to our problems. I have locked my version of the game to v2.4.5. which is right before they made all the changes mentioned above. When you select the game from your library, right click on it. You will see a menu- on the bottom it says "properties". Click it and on the window select "betas" and there you will see the "select the beta you want to opt into" dropbox. From here you can choose among a number of different states at which the game was throughout it course. You don't have to look for mods that return the old feeling of the game and you don't have to deal with the developers' bull****. And as I've mentioned the word mods, this is where this game really shines.

There is a fantastic community here and many amazing mods, from minor tweeks, to giant ones that turn it into a whole new game of its own. If you ever get tired of playing in Europe/Asia/Africa in a historic game you can try the awesome mods that take you to the lands of Songs of Fire and Ice (Game of Thrones), the Witcher, the Elder Scrolls, there is even an early stage Middle Earth one. The various different mods really add to this game and are a must for everyone who is into trying something different once the original gets boring. And if you already have some of these mods, but are annoyed with the fact that the new patch made them incompatible and you can't play them, do a downgrade to a version that is compatible to your favourite mod and continue the fun you had.

This used to be my favorite game ever. I have hundreds of hours logged into this game. I even loved crusader kings 1.

But Paradox has decided to let some no talent idiots take control of the Crusader Kings 2 project. Essentially they have repalced the main development team and the vision of the game has drastically changed. I have almost all the DLC's for this game and have spent quite a bit of money on it and NOW they start ruining it? Instead of giving us new things to conquer or new characters to interact with or new cool things to do they have decided just to make the old things harder and more annoying.

Between conclave and the proposed black death dlc the developers are severely limiting game play by injecting annoying, illogical and unrealistic events into the game. People already plotted to rebel and acquire power for themselves but conclave made it easier for them. There were already illnesses that caused quite a bit of devastation in the game so the new DLC is proposed to maximize that already annoying situation. What fun is that going to be?? Well let me tell you it will be about as fun as micromanaging all your vassals is in Conclave. Basically none. The UI and real time mode of game play severely limit micromanagement oppurtunities.

I am very unhappy with the direction crusader kings 2 is going with the dlc's and I will no longer be purchasing them. But even that doesn't stop the new jerk developers because they patch in idiotic things like broken retreat into the game whether you like it or not. I have quite a bit of money wrapped up in this game and the jerks have made it unplayable. The developers are so arrogant and foolish they don't even make their stupid new rules optional.

This is what happens when you don't allow negative feedback on your forums and fill it with bootlicking yes men. They pretty much ban anybody who makes the slightest criticisms of their games on their forums. Don't believe me go and see. Screw you paradox. No more money for you.

I never played this game before. I bought it on a sale with a hole bunch of what looked like a millian DLCs and had it sitting in my library for quite some time. At some point I decided to pick it up and give it a try.

Since I like playing the underdogs I decided I'd try to create a Buddhist World Empire. So I picked some random Buddhist dude on the top right corner of the map, designed a nice flag for him, browsed briefly thru the hair styles and gave him some nice sounding name. And there I was, a new Buddhist Lord in the year of 769.

Boy was i confused. So damn much was going on and I didn't understand half of it. I soon found out that I had picked a guy who was the vassal of some other Buddhist lord. It took me about 30 years, but within my first character I was able to marry my lords daughter. My first character did nothing more then that, he just waited until he finally died so his son could take over.

After that it was a ever so slowly progression. The more I learned how to play, the better it was. Slowly and steady I extended my new Buddhist Empire, taking over county by county, then losing half of them again to my brother the moment a transition from one leader to his son happened. Rinse and repeat. The bigger I grew, the more I understood the importance of keeping my vassals happy. I tried to adopt. A few times I had to reload because my empire had been torn apart by revolution. It took me about 200 years, until 800 something, until I felt ready to extend to the north. So I slowly took over the Tengri region above me. This worked out fine. I spend some time mixing up the bloodlines, dealing with revolts and stuff, until I finally had something of an stable empire. Now the only way to grow was to the west, into the Arabian empires. I had to reload some times and figure out the best time and approach. I seeded revolutions over there and struck just when they where hit hard by multiple regions braking into independence. This went on for a couple of years, slowly extending county for country into Muslim area. Each time I had conquered a country I did my best to convince the leader to convert to Buddhism, eventually, and very forcefully, spreading the word of the Buddha to the west.

By this time I felt pretty confident that I could extend all the way to the Indian regions, where some bits and peaces of Buddhism where still existing. My dream of a big Buddhist World Empire was closer then ever.

Boy was I wrong.

In the year 1220 a huge army of Mongolian forces arrived and stood all of the sudden right in the power center of my empire. I was, at that time, able to round up a total of almost 11.000 men, a number I had seen increasing over the past 100 years and was incredibly proud of. The Mongols landed with something around between 50.000 and 70.000 men. I gave up fighting withing the first year.

I was thrown into prison and most of my direct holdings where taken from me. My Buddhist Empire that I had been so fond of was forcefully integrated into the much larger Mongolian Empire. After some years I was demanded to change my religion to Hindu, which I did with great reluctance. Struggling to survive I tried to marry myself or one of my hires into the Mongolian Empire, but since they where Hindus alone the “Not the same caste” message killed me of. Nether the less I managed to keep my bloodline alive and seed some of them into the Mongolian Empire. I took some of my titles back and could at the very least keep my little Buddhist Kingdom, even thou the Tengri Part was lost for good, since the Khagan himself had inherited that title . I did some attempts of murder, but had no backers and mostly just ended up begin “politely” asked to drop it. I even tried to reclaim the title by force, when I saw a huge stack of 80.000 armies pass thou my land and into India, figuring I might have the time to win this war before they could reach me. I was wrong. So I ended the game as I had started it: a pitiful, meaningless nobody in some little remote state, that had given up his believe and lost every bit of his power to a greater leader.

I bow before you, game. I enjoyed every single hour of this almost 60 hour game. I regret nothing. Next time I have so much more I know, I might even not fail as bad. Or even more – who knows. Next I' ll try to conquer the world with some Afrikan Empire...

Kill your brothers! Kill you sisters! Kill you mother!

Imprison, behead, castrate, poke eyes off, plot, plot and plot!

Kill everyone you hate!

Make you medieval kingdom paved in blood!

For the DlCs I can only recommend Old Gods, there are other good DLCs, but I only play pagans and vikings.

There is a Game of Thrones mod, so you can do all the above in Westeros!

Totally recommend :D

This is probably one of my favorite games of all time, but Paradox has gone mad with DLCs, content packs, and basically just any way to get money out of the consumer that doesn't require improving the actual game itself.

It's like painting over a wall with a giant gaping hole in it.
Oh, and you're paying for the paint.

Some people bad-mouth this game saying the dlc costs too much or that they should fix this and that before adding in more. But for me a game that 150 euro (or 250 if you buy the dlc later) it been worth it, why, becuse Crusader kings 2 has given me over 1k hours (So far). That's a lot. You'd had to play more than 40 days straight non stop to catch up with that. For me crusader kings is more than a game it's a hobby. Some people spend just as much money (or more) and hours to fix a car for example. In the end it's up to you if you feel like investing time and money into it.

Had a loyal Danish Count in my lands (my friend)
who later on refused the Duke's request for financial aid
I proceed to imprison this unloyal man, for the greater of the realm
A revolt begins in the count and all hell had been broke lose
I manage to imprison the count after I had ended the revolt with violence
I proceed to execute the filfth and succesfully rid him off the realm
His heir full with revenge, proceeds to kidnap me and then execute me with no mercy at all
Then my heir tries to imprison him and he flees with his army like a little ♥♥♥♥
He then imprisons my siblings, and kill my heir.
He slayed my bloodline
and this was all part of the plan, Knut the Fat had made.

I've only played this game for a little bit, but it's definitely fun every now and then. You absolutely won't find yourself playing for hours straight on the weekend or a day off when you thought you were only going to play for an hour at most. I've never felt the desire to cancel on plans or dates with other people due to intriguing events occuring in my realm. Realisstically speaking, this game has some replayability, and though it isn't addictive to the point you actively avoid sleeping, it's still an engrossing game.

Oh and you should absolutely buy the DLC when it comes out, and not when it's on sale. Paradox is extremely fair with their DLC prices and you'll never look at the 6 million DLCs and think "wow, don't you think that's a bit much for that little content?"

Crusader Kings 2 is real time/paused strategy game developed by Paradox Interactive. Same developer who made other great games like Europa Universalis 4, Victoria 2, Hearts of Iron 3 and Stellaris. This game is based on Middle Ages to start of renaissance, where EU4 starts. Without DLC starts around 1066, but if you have dlc\'s like Old Gods and Charlemagne you can start it on 700\'s.

However before saying this game is all about invading other lands like Civ and Total War, no. Because this game is unique. You rule your dynasty and lead it through the age. You have to control your family by marrying other people for example Holy Roman Empire\'s princesses. Then you extend your family and realm. Same time there is world map, where you can invade land, like in every strategy game. But only land available is Europe, North Africa and part of Asia.

There are many events in this game. I\'ll explain hordes, rebellions and crusades in this review. There are many hordes. For example Mongols and Abbasids. If you have Sunset Invasion DLC, Aztecs are gonna invade Europe too. Hordes born quickly and rise by invading all neighbor realms. They are hard to defeat but they collapse easily with rebellions. Rebellions are events where claimer of duchy of puppet state declare war on country and try to switch government or get independece. That\'s why you see all rebellions threats on your intrique menu, so you can prepare at threats or plot to kill threats. And last, crusades. If you part of catholic or orthodox religion, pope or archbishop might declare crusade to invade Jerusalem, Anatolia or any lands where real life crusaders were. You don\'t have to join crusade but if you join and get most points you\'ll gain all lands that were invaded in crusade.

Family relations are pretty important as your sons that have bad relation with you might try to kill you or start rebellion. And affairs are just gonna anger your wife and your children. However having family member in countries like Holy Roman Empire might help you make alliance with them, so that is useful. On my game, I just spammed my every daughter on big countries, HRE, England, France and Byzantium.

Combat works really well, but units are pretty hard to make and army levies might rise too big.

Overall this game is great and I had alot more fun with it than with Civ or EU4. I recommend it!
