What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“The game is finished. You can play all fifty levels, and the online mode is complete. What I can't do on my own is balance it. I've played it so much that I can't tell anymore which levels are too hard, which world rules are too harsh, or whether the star upgrades cost the right amount. I need a lot of people playing it to figure that out, and Early Access is the best way to get them.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“About six months. The game itself is done, so this time is mostly for balancing and adding more relics. If the balance needs longer I'll take longer, but I won't keep the game in Early Access just to keep adding features.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The full version will have:

- Better balance, based on player feedback. Level difficulty, world rules and star upgrade costs will all be adjusted.
- More relics, especially ones that change how you play a level instead of just making your towers stronger.
- More star upgrades, including some for specific towers.
- Fixes for any bugs and problems players find along the way.

The online mode is already finished and included from day one.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The whole game is playable from start to finish.

- 50 levels across 10 worlds. Every world after the first has its own rule and its own enemy.
- 8 towers, each with two upgrades. New towers unlock over the first few levels.
- 12 enemy types and 9 bosses, with the Thorn King waiting at level 50.
- A relic to pick every fourth round.
- Up to three stars and a crown to earn on each level. Stars buy permanent upgrades.
- A first level that teaches you how to play.
- After level 50 the worlds repeat, harder each time.
- Online mode for up to 8 players using the same towers. You spend your gold on defense or on units to send at other players.
- Solo play works fully offline.

Balance is still being tuned, and more relics are on the way.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“The price might go up a little at full release. If you buy during Early Access, you keep the game and get every update at no extra cost. Nothing that affects gameplay will ever be sold separately.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“Through the Steam forums and the Thornline TD Discord. I'm a solo developer and I read every post myself. Most balance changes will come from what players report, like levels that feel unfair or too hard, and each update's patch notes will say what feedback it's responding to.”

About This Game

Build the maze

There is no path until you make one. Every tower is a wall, and the enemy walks wherever your walls leave room. A tower that would close the path completely cannot be placed, so there is always a way through. The skill is making the path long, and making it pass your strongest towers.

Eight towers, handed to you a few at a time: Arrow, Cannon, Frost, Poison, Lightning, Catapult, Flamethrower and Sniper. Each one upgrades twice, and an upgrade makes a tower stronger without changing what it does. Armor takes a flat amount off every hit, so a Cannon's heavy shots break through it and an Arrow's light ones do not. You win by reading the wave and building for it.

Send units at your rivals

Up to eight players, each defending their own maze. Every round you choose how to spend your gold: on towers, or on units you send into a rival's lane. Every unit you send raises your income for the rest of the match, so the gold you spend on attack keeps paying for your defense. The last player standing wins.

Invite friends and fill the empty seats with bots, or play a skirmish against seven bots offline.

Every world bends the rules

On your own, climb fifty levels across ten worlds, a new world every level. Past the first, each world plays by a rule of its own. On the Sunbarrens every wave comes up out of the sand a quarter of the way down the path, so the front of your maze does nothing.

On the Frostline a boss comes in at your keep and walks your maze backwards. On the Saltmarsh every second wave has twice the enemies at half the health. On the Barrows the enemies you kill stand up once more.

The maze that cleared the last world is the wrong maze for the next one.

Fifty levels

  • The same level is the same board every time. Lose by a little, see what to change, and go again.

  • Each world has an enemy of its own. The Wrecker steals your gold while it walks. The Scarab's armor cracks with every hit. The Boar runs faster when you hurt it. The Ghoul heals when nothing is hitting it. The Knight breaks into beetles when it falls.

  • Nine bosses. Every level from the second ends with one, and the Thorn King waits at level fifty.

  • Three stars and a crown on every level. Stars buy upgrades that last: more gold at the start, stronger towers, more interest.

  • A relic every fourth round. Pick one to keep for the rest of the level, or take the gold instead.

  • It keeps going past fifty. The worlds come round again, harder each time.

One price, one complete game

No DLC and no pay to win. Buy it once and you have all of it, the online mode included. The solo levels need no internet connection.
