What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Habitat is a game I'm building and shaping as I go, and I want players in the terrarium with me while that happens. The core game is fully playable — you can draft, build habitats, attract animals, and finish runs solo or online — but a big part of where it's headed is community-driven: mod and modifier support that lets players create and share their own content. That kind of system only gets good through real players using it, breaking it, and telling me what they need. Early Access is the honest label for that: a living game, actively developed, steered by the people playing it.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“I expect roughly one to two years. The honest answer is that quality decides, not the calendar — the game leaves Early Access when the mod tools, multiplayer, and content feel complete and stable, not on a fixed date.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The core loop is already in place. For the full version, I plan to focus on: expanding and polishing the mod/modifier creation tools and community sharing; more content (animals, season events, artifacts, and game modes); continued polish of online multiplayer; and overall balance, performance, and quality-of-life improvements driven by player feedback. The scope may shift based on what the community responds to — I'd rather build what players actually want than stick rigidly to a roadmap.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The game is fully playable today: single-player runs with drafting, habitat building, and animal collection; multiple modes including endless, puzzle, and sandbox; seasons, events, tech trees, artifacts, and progression; online multiplayer; and support for 12 languages. That said, this is an early version I expect bugs, rough edges, and balance that's still settling, especially in multiplayer and the newer community/mod features. Things will break sometimes; I fix them as fast as I can.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“I'm not planning on changing the price when the game leaves Early Access.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“Community is the whole point of this Early Access. I read the Steam discussions and respond to bug reports directly — the game even has a built-in bug-report tool that bundles the info I need to fix things. Player feedback has already changed the game's direction more than once, and I plan to keep working that way: share what you build, report what breaks, tell me what feels wrong, and you'll see it reflected in updates. The mod and modifier systems in particular will be shaped hand-in-hand with the players using them.”

About This Game

Every animal needs a home. You know how to build one.

Habitat is a turn-based strategy game played on a hand-sculpted clay world. Each turn you draft animals and terrain, then place tokens on the hex board to grow the exact landscape each creature needs — a pig wants its farm and a splash of water; a heron wants the river bend to itself. Complete a pattern and the animal settles in, alive on your board from then on.

The seasons keep turning. Spring rain, summer bloom, winter's bright hush — each season shifts what thrives, and phenomena like rainbows, monsoons and Starfall sweep across the land to bend your plans.

Grow your knowledge. Unlock technologies, gather artifacts with strange old powers, chase milestones, and fill your compendium — a naturalist's journal spanning 49 animals and the history of biome art
itself.

Play it your way. A full solo game, or online with 2–4 players — invite Steam friends straight from the lobby.

AI Generated Content Disclosure

The developers describe how their game uses AI Generated Content like this:

This game includes content created with the help of generative AI. The base 3D animal models were generated using an AI 3D-modeling tool and then rigged, animated, and hand-finished by the developer. Non-English translations were initially AI-drafted and then reviewed and corrected by the developer. All content is final and reviewed before release — no AI content is generated while you play.
