What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“ With Prison Gambit, we want to give groups of 4 to 12 players the tension of betrayal, cooperation and trust, while keeping the warmth of a board game night with friends. To do that, we designed 15 communication-driven social mini-games; 10 are played each session. But how they actually feel in real groups is something we can only understand by playing alongside the people who play them.

Early Access is the honest way to make this kind of game. It lets us ship the full experience today and then shape the balance, pacing, and which new mini-games and social features come next together with real players.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We plan to be in Early Access for approximately 12 to 18 months. The exact timing depends on how the roadmap lands and how player feedback shapes priorities. We'd rather leave Early Access when the game feels finished to the people playing it than when a fixed date says so.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“ In the full 1.0 version, we plan to work on:

- New social mini-games, expanding the current 15-game roster with fresh communication and negotiation formats
- A more complete achievement set with proper art (currently placeholder)
- Deeper character customization with more unlocks
- More emotes and in-cell interactions for the face-to-face moments
- Balance and pacing tuning based on how real lobbies actually play
- Wider localization where community demand emerges

The core loop (mini-games, in-cell video negotiation, and the public/private deal cycle) is already there and stays the heart of the game.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“ Prison Gambit is playable end to end today. 4 to 12 real players connect via Steam friend invite or the public lobby browser, customize their character, spawn into a shared prison environment, and play a full session of 10 mini-games followed by a scoreboard. All 15 mini-games are in place and ready for real sessions. Balance and pacing are things we'll keep tuning during Early Access as we watch how real lobbies play.

In-game voice chat, in-cell face-to-face video negotiation, character customization, Steam Cloud saves, and Steam Rich Presence all work. The game is localized in 14 languages.

A note on how the game is played: Prison Gambit is a party game that only comes alive with real people. There is no single player or bot fill mode, and this isn't planned for 1.0 either. Grab 3 or more friends (or drop into a public lobby) to play.

Still being worked on during Early Access:

- Achievement art is placeholder and the achievement set isn't finalized
- Controller support isn't planned for launch”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“ We plan to raise the price at 1.0 launch. Players who buy during Early Access keep full access, including all 1.0 content, at no additional cost.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“ We plan to involve the community through Steam Community Discussions, a public roadmap on the Steam Community Hub, and a dedicated Discord server for playtest coordination and direct developer contact. We'll also actively watch content creator playthroughs to see how fresh lobbies react to each mini-game. Player feedback on mini-game balance, on which new mini-game ideas to prioritize, and on quality of life improvements will directly shape what comes next between now and 1.0.”

About This Game

WELCOME TO THE PRISON.

You and your fellow inmates have one shot at freedom. The catch? Only one of you walks out - and the only way out is through each other.

Prison Gambit is a social party game for 4-12 players. Each round, you'll face a different social challenge - sometimes you'll plot quietly from your cell, sometimes you'll meet face-to-face in the hall. Talk, vote, deal, scheme. The rules change. Your friends don't. (Or do they?)

HOW IT WORKS

Every player gets their own private cell - your space to think, plan, and make secret choices. Between challenges, everyone gathers in the hall to negotiate, form alliances, and call each other out.

There are no fixed teams. No hidden traitors. No "good side" or "bad side." Just you, your fellow inmates, and the choices you make together - or against each other.

Every promise is optional. Every alliance is temporary. Every betrayal has a price.

WHAT YOU'LL PLAY

A whole pool of social minigames, each one testing a different side of how you read people - and how well you can fool them. Some examples:

  • Two of you. Cooperate, and you both win small. Cheat, and one of you wins big. The classic prisoner's dilemma. Will they keep their word?

  • Pick a number nobody else picks. Then race across the prison yard. The bolder the move, the bigger the reward.

  • Bid on the crown - but the runner-up loses everything. Sometimes winning costs more than losing.

Each session pulls a fresh mix of minigames from the pool, so no two prison nights play out the same way.

PLAY YOUR WAY

You can't win alone - but you can't share the win either.

Form an alliance. Sell out an alliance. Share information. Lie about what you saw. Promise loyalty. Cash in a debt. Throw a round to set up the next one.

There's no "right" way to play. Just consequences.

In the end, only one walks free.
