Why Early Access?

“Having an audience to test gameplay and features is incredibly helpful for development, especially for a multiplayer game. It also gives players an opportunity to provide feedback as the game is developed, resulting in a better game.”

“1-2 years”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“In the short term, I plan to add more enemies and items. Enemies that lurk in the rivers. Enemies you need to yell at to scare away. Enemies that aggressively defend their territory should you wander into it. A handheld GPS unit and, separately, a gun with tracking darts. Cattle prods that stun the monster and make humans drop any items they're holding. Anything else I can think of for which systems already exist (mostly).

In the medium term, I plan to work on the objectives and gameplay for the human players. For now, running the gauntlet between the beach and island center is enough of a goal for the game to work, but I'm dissatisfied with it. I'd like to use the opportunity to introduce a storyline, but my highest priorities so far have been the environment and core mechanics.

In the long term, I'd like to introduce more maps. Maybe something as simple as different terrains and cover types, or different seasons. I think a cave environment would be really cool. Maybe some indoor maps. I'm not sure yet.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The core features of the game are functional. The game has a lobby system with a public lobby and the option to create private rooms to play with friends. Both the human and monster characters are playable. One enemy type, crawlers, already exists to provide threats to humans and food for monsters. Humans have proximity chat, they can interact with items and each other, and they can escape the island or die trying. Monsters can "see" any sound you hear in the environment and can hunt crawlers and players to avoid starvation. Rounds end when no humans remain on the island.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“I plan to gradually raise the price as I ship new content and features.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“Demonstrations of game content can be found on YouTube, where the community is welcome to comment. Community conversions can be had on Reddit. I want your questions and feedback, so please take a look. Search for Calling in the Shadows on both platforms.”

About This Game

Play online with proximity chat with up to 12 players. Find each other in the dark. Break crates to get items with different uses. Each player can only hold one item at a time, so you'll need to work as a team to use more than one item at once. Work together or alone to gather orbs from the center of the island to deliver to dormant obelisks on the beach. If you manage to deliver 3 orbs to the same obelisk, a portal off the island will appear for a time, through which you can escape.

But be careful! The island is dangerous, and if you die, you transform into a horrible monster, completely blind, but possessing an inhuman sense that allows you to "see" sound. To satisfy your hunger, you must hunt in total darkness, feeding on crawlers to survive. And perhaps larger prey too, if you can find it.

You never know what's out there in the dark. So listen and beware of calling in the shadows.
