What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Since its Kickstarter, Edge of Eternity underwent through a lot of changes. As the scope of the project widened, also did our needs. As a result, we have hired a few more talented hands to help us deliver the project we envisioned. Edge of Eternity became even grander.

One notorious example of this is the Voice Acting : it wasn't our intention to dub the game at first, but as the storyline unfolded, we began eyeing each others like "wouldn't this scene be far more epic if it was voiced ?" - "Yes, it would." So we began expanding on that field, for outstanding results we can't wait to share with you.

As we conduct the remaining of our development within the boundaries we've set, we are still tempted to expand some additional features that would greatly overhaul the whole experience. Opening the game now to Early Access would help us unlock enough budget to add an additional layer of polish into the game, and insure it will be the best game we can possibly deliver.

Also having players giving us actual feedback about the game would help us immensely in nudging the game in the right direction. There is a certain amount of fine-tuning that heavily depends on individual feedbacks, and we feel that inviting the players into it is a desirable direction. The other reason why we are looking forward to collaborate with our community is the modding. We intend to make Edge of Eternity fully customizable and allow the players to plunge their hands right into it and experiment their own things. For that matter we intend to release a Modkit for Edge of Eternity in the next months for players to tinker with it.

This Modkit will need - just like the rest of the game - feedbacks from you. We have several guys on our team who were modders themselves and who deeply value modding as a practice and feel it has a real added value to a game.

In short, we need as much feedback as we can gather, and we think actual players are the best persons to know what they like or not.

For all of those reasons, we felt that Early Access is a sound choice, especially considering our actual state of the development.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“Though we're making progress we can't precisely pinpoint how much time we need to output the final product. You have heard that a lot, we wager, but we prefer to be upfront on that rather than give an inconsiderate answer.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“Though many of the game core features are already implemented, most of the written storyline hasn't been yet. As the Early Access unfolds, so will Edge of Eternity's story (not unlike an anime season, actually.) On regular basis, new chapters of the story will be unlocked, allowing you to continue the story.

In between these new chapters, you will still have access to the game's open-world, where you can accomplish side-quests, explore, find interesting nooks and crannies et experiment different builds with your characters.

During the Early Access, much of the game will evolve. The additions will be numerous, from new spells, monsters, loot, to larger one : new region to explore, new side-quests, etc. For instance, the actual introduction to the game is not the final one. Another example : at some point of the development, a Coliseum will open in the game, and with it, you'll be able to tackle great challenges and explore the many deep aspects of Edge of Eternity combat system.

As you can see, we have many things in the wraps for the months to come, and we are excited to share this new step of our adventure with you.
We sincerely hope that you will enjoy playing Edge of Eternity’s Early Access!”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“At the beginning of the Early Access, the game will include from 10 to 20 hours of content (depending if you are a completionist or not.) As far as the development is concerned this is the emerged part of the iceberg.

We are further than that when it comes to sheer content (storyline, assets, cities, environment, quests, etc.) but these parts are still lacking the proper polish to be playable right away. We have a time schedule that includes the release the new content every two months - three for the meatiest updates.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“For now our intend is to have a fixed price for Early Access, and a different price on release.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We think that Early Access makes a game a living thing. It has been proved again and again, all games are ultimately better with an Early Access : players and devs talk with each other, the game evolves in real-time. The history of its development in not a thing to be hidden behind curtains, it becomes a public thing - a group endeavour.

For instance we might be releasing some kind of seasonal content - or suggest some WIP ideas, some quests, some events that won’t necessarily be in the final game. These kind of one-thing content - and how you respond to it - will allow us to have a better understanding of what is fun, what could be improved and what kind of additions would be awesome for Edge of Eternity.

But again one of the biggest reason of the early access remains the feedback. The game, as well as its modkit - the Eternal Forge - will greatly evolve during the development. To that purpose we will need every feedback we can get. Whether they are about the general feeling of the game, the difficulty, the features, the combats, the design, the storyline or the Eternal Forge, we will need them.

And this is why we need you. Edge of Eternity is not only our RPG, it is also yours.”

Herelsor, the City of the Wind

As we continue putting some finishing touches here and there, we are beginning to see the end of that (first) tunnel which will lead us to the Early Access.

In the meantime, let’s have another bit of lore.
Now this one is important ! (“like all bits of lore!” yammers our Narrative Designer)

It’s about Herelsor, the first city you will discover in Edge of Eternity

Herelsor, the City of the Wind

A city of crafters and merchants who managed to stay clear of the "war's most adverse consequences" as its natives would put it - Herelsor is known to trade in most valuable goods. Its tantalizing wealth is spread out between many rich families who own most of the city's world-renowned businesses.

There has always been enough gold flowing through its streets to insure it would never bleed to death - even in times of war - for all of Heryon's nobility crave for the subtle refinement of Herelsian craft, from their famous winery or delicate gem-cutting. No other city on the planet can boast such an exquisite savoir-faire.

The many spires that circle the city's perimeter harbour several dozens of hardened Fire Bearers... sorcerers who will not hesitate to hurl bursts of fireballs to any Archelite's aircraft that would dare to hover their way.

Street urchins prowl the back alleys - teenagers of the age of 14 or 15, expelled from the far too coveted city orphanages. Living in the sewers and organized in small "families", they go by until they finally reach the age of conscription - for them, those two years of homelessness is but a fleeting moment between the suffocating atmosphere of the orphanage, and the horrors of the war.

A war that - they know - will claim their lives just like it claimed their parent's.

Jaded but lucid, these kids are able to take this small moment of freedom for what it is: the best time of their lives. In the streets of Herelsor, they enjoy a short period of emancipation before their conscription into the army - even if they have to live off scavenging and stealing.

"They will serve their country soon enough" whisper the rich merchants with indulgence as they throw a few coins their way.

A loose handful of them becomes apprentices or shopkeepers. Some of them get "adopted" by rich patrons. Some others leave the city and become outlaws... but no matter their destiny, and no matter their choices, all of them know that their existence will be short-lived and full of hardships.

Daryon and Selene were orphans too before their mother took them in. Even though the latter warned them not to go on any "stupid goose chase" and "throw their life away trying to save someone who is already dead", Daryon and Selene are still hell-bent on finding a cure to save her from the Corrosion.

Herelsor will be the first city you will discover - as players. It will be but a short stop in your journey - and a convenient base of operations where you will be able to slowly develop your characters through the means of crafting, trading or side-questing.

We hope that you will find the accommodations to your taste.

For a time, at least.

Thanks for following Edge of Eternity! A few weeks to go, and we hit our next important milestone : Early Access!
