"Okay I know the art style isn't anime but this visual novel is GORGEOUS. It has dating sim elements and follows the story of Cinderella...or does it?"

“MoaCube focuses on the women of the tale and what made them who they are. The game is about nuance, is about understanding the motivations of another human being.”

“Asides from being delightfully well-written, highly replayable and filled with complex, convoluted characters, Cinders is also beautiful.”

“A visual novel that presents the deepest, most complex, most original, and ultimately most compelling re-imagination of the Cinderella universe.”

Over dit spel

Cinders is a mature take on a classic fairytale with a heavy emphasis on player choices and role playing.

Cinders is a witty young woman living with an overbearing stepmother and her two daughters, as if she was reenacting a certain well-known fairytale. But unlike its protagonist, Cinders is not afraid of taking fate into her own hands. Even if it means breaking the rules…

The game takes a look at four women and what made them who they are. It’s a story about balancing freedom and dreams with circumstance and harsh reality. About growing up and finding out the true meaning of independence. Distancing itself from the judgmental simplicity of the original, Cinders tries to explore the more complex nature of oppression, responsibility and innocence.

With 120 decision points, over 300 options to choose from, and multiple endings, Cinders gives you total control over the main character’s personality and how her story unfolds.

Cinders is a pretty fantastic visual novel, full of strong female characters and decisions that have consequences. It's a darker, more mature take on the classic Cinderella fairy tale, but with some clever twists. The artwork and music are really gorgeous and add a lot to the story. It's also worth noting that this is one of the rare visual novels that uses an art style other than anime.

The game's a bit short and even going back and playing several endings won't take much longer than a few hours. Unfortunately, there isn't a lot of replay value. While there are a lot of different endings in the game, things become a little tedious after you've played through a couple of times. Other than achievement hunting, there's not much payoff for getting all the endings.

Even though it's brief, the story and characters are engaging and it's an enjoyable experience while it lasts. It's also a visual novel that's a bit heavier on the novel part than straight-up dating sims; several different pairings can occur, but the focus isn't entirely on romance.

I personally think that the $20 price tag is a little steep for such a short game though, so look for sales or bundle deals.

I originally had this game on my wishlist based on the art style alone. Turns out, it's a re-imagining of the tale of Cinderella. And it is a visual novel, where your choices have an actual impact on the story.

Graphics / art - 5/10
Let me get this out of the way since this is what first pulled me in. Mmmm ... not that impressive at the end of the day. Most of the characters look a little weird, and there's just not much animation. I know it's a visual novel, but it feels like they could have done a little more. So it's not bad, just not quite up to its potential in this area.

Story / characters - 8/10
The story itself is slightly adapted, and I have to say the developers did a great job. The wicked stepmother and the two evil stepsisters are actual characters with personalities, and through the story you can understand some of the reasons why they behave as they do. Truly a tremendous spin on a stale old tale.

The developers also get into why there is a ball, which is pretty interesting.

The most annoying character is probably Cinders herself. In some ways she behaves like any normal person in a ♥♥♥♥♥♥ situation would. However, other times she's a bit whiny and preachy.

My favorite character was actually the stepmother. She's less of a demon when you get to know her reasoning and motivations. And her drive is impressive.

The side characters beyond the main ones (Cinders and her step-family being the core characters), are less interesting, and it seems like there are some interesting mysteries into their backgrounds that unfortunately don't get fleshed out. Like what the relationship is between Cinder's mother and some of the other side characters. What happened to Cinder's mother?

Gameplay - 10/10
As with most visual novels, it's mostly reading. However, at key points you get to make decisions. I wish I had read about the game before playing to better appreciate the impact of decisions. It would have let me know how important it is to use all of your (I think) 10 save slots so that you don't have to restart the story from the beginning to find all the endings.

Basically, you can be good, neutral or evil based on your decisions. And your decisions impact your route to the ball, which suitor you end up with, and whether you're even happy at the end. I overwrote a lot of my old saves as I went along, so I was really limited in my endings. However, I think there are a total of about 12 variations.

Pretty incredible, eh? The game itself isn't amazing, but when you realize how the developers freshened up the source material, you can't help but be impressed!

I'm not much for Visual Novels, or multiple choice. Never really found them very fun to play.
But for some reason, I actually quite like Cinders.

Not even sure what it is that makes me like this game.

But it is indeed a very nice VN. I can certainly recommend this game.

My opening statement:
Cinders is pretty good visual novel.
I think this is all you need to know at this point.

I like when familiar stories are reimagined, authors and creators give them they own flair and taste, and it worked in Cinders. Story feels fresh, you can like (love would be strong term) and hate characters, and for 3 hours it grabs you and you want to see how the story ends. Happily ever after or miserable till death.

Art is simply fantastic, i am big fan of it.
Music could have been better.
There is nothing specific for what you can be harsh on this game and if you want me to cherry picking some stuff; I was surprised when i saw 16,99€ as a price for Cinders. Holy cow! If i didn't get this game in bundle, i would never ever buy game like this, for price this high.

Awesome artwork, good storytelling were reasons to play till the end; but one end only.

P.S. Gloria is hot. I am weird. I know. So what!

Gorgeous VN, providing a nice variation from the mainly anime style VNs available. The character designs are beautiful, they are also pleasingly expressive for the amount of detail on each of them. (I'd gladly buy a poster of madame Ghede or the fairy to hang on my wall, if one were available :L) The backgrounds are wonderfully atmospheric, particularly around the fairies' lake, perfect for the fairytale story it's based on. The music also attributes to this atmosphere setting the tone for each scene.

The characters are enjoyable, the opportunity to work with Cinders' step-family was a nice variation to the original story. Cinders also stood out as she was a very likeable protagonist, with a lot of personality.

The major con of this game is it's length, there are relatively few endings, it would have been nice to see more possible love interests/lifestyle paths for Cinders as a lot more of it is based on who is allied with her at the end and whether she is good, or bad. You can finish most, if not all, endings in one sitting, so it, unfortunately, has little replay value story-wise.

Overall, I'd recommend Cinders as a beautiful and atmospheric experience, utilising it's game qualities to enhance the events taking place. My only wish is that there were more events.

TLDR: atmospheric & beautiful art, with interesting characters, but is relatively short/has fewer endings than most other VNs.
