Developer diary (part 9) - I can see the light!!! And yes, you’re right, it’s a bit too difficult, I’m working on it!

Yes, everybody! That’s it! I'm starting to see the light! A few weeks (no more than 99+! Joking :P ) and the full release will be published!

Down here in the cave, life is tough, believe me! I’m working hard (at the moment I’m creating the LAST level -freakin’ amazing honestly!) but in the last weeks, as some of you know, I also re-worked the GUI and learning curve.

The history of Albedo difficulty level: Easy to tell. I wanted to do an old-school game. A difficult game. Does anyone remember those games where you have to spend lots of time and make many attempts, trying to solve a puzzle or a level? I do. I loved these kinds of games. A real challenge for my brain. Honestly, I don’t like the drift of games to a super-easy level so much; where the player gets to win at any cost. I grew with video games that would punch me with their difficulty; and yes, I liked it.

Anyway: For this, me, Luke and Ivan decided to release on Early Access. To get thoughts on this thing. To understand which level of difficulty, you (my beloved players) prefer. How the game needs to be.
A game developer is nothing without players.

I admit: I wanted to develop a difficult game. But I didn’t think about how you nowadays players have a lot of things to do, games to play, billions of new ones every day (A rhyme! I have to write a song about it!). And I have to offer you the best game experience in the time you’ll spend playing my game. My aim is not to waste your time. My aim is to provide entertainment, and to create a wonderful new 60's Sci-Fi experience around you!

So, 3+1 words: surrender to reality, Z4G0.

YESTERDAY: The game was too difficult.
TODAY: Now it is less difficult, I hope.
I listened to a lot of you players, I read a lot of reviews. As you know we worked a lot with the community, on the Community Hub Especially James, thank you mate!
Now you have to choose the difficulty level before starting the game: Obviously, you’ll able to change it during the same game. If you play in HARD MODE, then you won’t find tips and suggestions and hint systems and help buttons and mummy cleaning your brain leaks :D If is too difficult, you should try easier levels.

Specifically, mini-games are/were honestly difficult. Ten thousand years ago, when I started developing Albedo; I decided to create special new mechanics. In my humble opinion quite original ones. NOW, you can decide (in EASY mode) to skip them. If you really are in crisis (or you don’t want to spend your time on it), you’ll be able to skip it. AS IVAN DOES (monkey player). Also, I’m adding hints directly from John T. Longy. “Maybe I’ve got to do this” “Perhaps I’ll do that” and so on.

As ALBEDO is an Adventure-Escape the Room-FPS crossover, it’s not easy to fit all players’ expectations and skills in one way. So the game lets you tune two difficulty levels (under OPTIONS/GAME): Adventure and Action.

What a pain, the first 3-4 negative reviews :( I was waiting for them, as it is impossible to have none, especially when player’s number grow. But my heart sunk, I cried a lot of tears from my lonely eye! No…that’s not true...I have 2 eyes.
Now I try to put my mind at ease, hoping that more people like ALBEDO :)

NOW: In the upcoming weeks I’ll update the game till the final release. In the current version, some of difficulty issues were fixed…In the coming update, lots of hints, texts and descriptions have been changed to smooth the learning curve. The first room should be a lot of easier to pass now.
BTW Let me know, specifically, what you think about difficult. Give me suggestions advice. Be part of development with me. The ancient meaning of ‘Early Access’ was this one. I believe in it.

Immediately after this DEV DIARY, I'll post to collect specific suggestions about difficulty level.
It is always difficult to close a post, I love to write for you and receive your feedback, but the cave is calling me. I have to finish ALBEDO.

Time is running out, but now I have a time machine!

I really wanted to like this game, it looks like so much fun in the trailers, but the puzzles are difficult and frustrating, not at all fun. It lacks a real story or anything that motivates me to want to continue to play to the next level. I would only recommend this game if you like difficult puzzles. I expected a little more fps action shooter, not a frusterating, unrewarding puzzler (I love puzzle games btw, just not this). Love the graphics, not the gameplay. I realize this is EA, so the game may improve. I wish there was a neutral button, but for now 5/10

It's just another boring night on the job for John T. Langley, nightwatch at the space station JUPITER, and the only solace from this monotonous position as a lowly guard amongst the important scientists working on god only knows what kind of experiment is yet another drinking binge. Who can blame him really? With the mundane day-in and day-out occupation of sitting and watching, wondering what exciting experiments your peers at the base could be conducting, left only to guess what the strange sounds behind doors late on the night shift really are.

The last scientist leaves for the night, wishing you a goodnight and marking the start of he most boring, lonely part of your job. You get up to stretch your legs shocked only to find the ground beneath you suddenly crack apart and swallow you into the depths of the unknown recesses of this diabolical research facility amongst its many secrets.

Developer Fabrizio Zagaglia sets out to create a new kind of first person experience, shedding the current trend of bland military shooters and free to play models in favor of a rich 60's sci-fi style and a unique approach to adventure game story telling. When asking Fabrizio what brought about his decision to go with this unique setting and its retro flavor he replied, "The main goal was to make something with this kind of mood, maybe a bit naive, simplistic and ingenuous... but full of mystery, astonishment... amazement that I can find only in old sci-fi operas, rather than make an explicit rip off of 60s sci-fi series. Nowadays it's all too serious, realistic, evil... cold..."

"I aimed to avoid the current mainstream typical features. Take for example the flatness of games like COD... or the F2P and socialgames drifts etc. Of course, still there are good things, and still exists interesting "new" or derivative genres ( sandbox, narrative and art games and so on)... but overall I feel a lack of "something" that I can find instead in 90s games... something similar to what I can find in 60s scifi series and can't find in the newest ones."

Albedo isn't just a first person action game as it may seem at first glance, it's clearly a thinking person's adventure that sets out to wrack your brain on tough and puzzling situations in order to make your daring escape from each obstacle-ridden area. The starting room alone had me guessing for awhile, combing through the locked and wasted sci-fi storage room for pieces of the trial-and-error puzzle I had to put together in order to trick and trap the oncoming and unseen terror from beyond the locked door before me. I was reminded of a much tenser, trippier and sci-fi oriented Myst, and that's a very good thing.

Albedo: The Eyes from Outer Space is a sci-fi geeks dream come true, a wonderful combination of adventure game situations and logic solving from the perspective of a first person shooter. All with just a touch of retro-inspired action and brawls with strange alien creatures that evoke the same kind of love I have for monster designs of classic series like Doom.

Each of the different rooms of the sprawling space complex acts as a tough situation of trial and error puzzle solving, forcing you to use the surroundings to your advantage scavenging pieces of useful material to combine with parts of the environment and further reveal the path ahead. These are extremely small details usually and will require every bit of your unbridled attention to even find. You'll be forced to keep your eyes peeled for the tiniest of details from grabbing a paperclip off of a seemingly unimportant stack of papers to recycle as a lock-pick to finding secret notes slipped under locked doors with mysterious passwords. It's beyond easy to gloss over the most obvious clues, but ultimately they feel very rewarding when discovered.

Although the logic and puzzle solving are tough as nails and may even leave you feeling as if at a dead end sometimes, there is always hope thanks to the strange and terrestrial Temporal Dilation Tool, which seems to show some sort of an alternate world where problems are fixed and solutions are highlighted.

The settings are detailed and vibrant in a grotesque organic sort of way, with each living membrane that plasters the wall gleaming with vivid texture and giving off strange phosphorescent lights of warm and strangely comforting natural hues. The lab itself and the tools around you, including the aforementioned Temporal Dilation Tool give a very retro/future feeling to your surroundings with the tinted green and static-y glow of the hologram and rustic qualities to metal surfaces.

One thing is certain when stepping through the deteriorating halls of JUPITER; a lot of care, love, and devotion to the genre went into creating this intense set-piece.

Even in its early access state of ongoing updates it's hard to find faults with Albedo: The Eyes from Outer Space, especially with the small amount of people involved with its development considered. With an exciting cliffhanger ending and more content on the horizon there's really no bad time to get involved with the game and watch the adventure of John T. Langley continue to spiral into something even more insane.

This game is AWESOME!

But, Mr. Paper! Isn't this game still in early access??

To answer your question is a simple 'yes', but there are so many reasons to consider a purchase. For one big thing, the game had started development in 2002, and has been in development ever since. The developer deserves at least SOMETHING after a ~12 year development period!

Let me go ahead and begin with the pros:

  • Graphics are certainly unique. Tinted a slight tan, providing a very eerie mood.
  • Great environmental interaction! (seriously, I'm not joking)
  • The little things: small puzzles, such as picking locks, are ideas I've never seen before.
  • Demons that make your blood run cold, yet at the same time, give you a hearty chuckle. Not in the bad way! In the way that makes you think This really fits in with the game's theme, does it not!

Although, it is told that when there is a positive, there exists a negative.

  • Certain models could be upped in their graphics more.
  • Some areas can be dark at times.
  • Not so much a tutorial. It does say things like This button does that! and That button does this! But it doesn't help you out much in solving the first puzzle. It provides hints, but sometimes, you will get stuck. EXTREME PROTIP: PUNCH TAB TO LIGHT UP EVERYTHING YOU CAN INTERACT WITH FOR A SECOND!
  • Speaking of puzzles, they can be demanding sometimes. Please take the time to acknowledge what I said before: When I say Great environmental interaction! I am really, really not joking. But don't worry! Once you get the hang of what to do in the first few puzzles, you'll get the hang of it!

Alriiight, so let's get down to dumming this all down.

Supporting the developer can really come in handy right now, due to the extremely unpopular state this game doesn't seem to be moving out of as of current.

All and all, this is recommended by me... If you want to support the developer! If you buy it now, you may not receive all that you were hoping for just now, but if the game has been in development for roughly 12 years already, I don't think the developer will be backing down anytime soon.

Oh yeah! A note to the developer:


As far as I can tell, if the game continues development at it's pace, it will become one of two things:

  • A highly popular game on Steam.
  • A VERY highly underrated game on Steam!

Right now, a solid 8/10. This game has an extremely high potential!

The feeling is real, Its easy to get use to the controls, the puzzles are intuitive, the save game is without checkpoints and its a good thing. The object options changes to attacking when facing a monster. The fighting is intense !

This game had me at the trailer. I love the feeling, the aesthetic, the atmosphere. All of it just culminates into this wonderfully weird game that I absolutely love. The puzzle design so far is quite good, and the controls are what I expected them to be; a little wonky, but in a good way. It helps the immersion, so I'm not gonna dock it for that. Really the only thing I'm seeing is the optimization is terrible, but that's to be expected in an early access title.

So far, this game gets a great big thumb's up from me. It's a fantastically strange puzzle/horror/comedy game that really scratches the itch for... strange puzzle/horror/comedy games...

Albedo is a great sci-fi thriller puzzle game. The atmosphere and art style are pleasantly grimey and dark. The levels are interesting and enjoyable to explore. The puzzles have many layers and require a fair amount of thought and exploration to solve. The User Interface is unique and pleasing to the eye in most cases, although it can be a bit clunky at times. The Early Acess levels focus more on puzzles than combat. However, the Work In Progress levels include gun=play which is overall smooth and enjoyable. It may be Early Access, but it is well produced and polished. The Early Access levels are worth the full price in my opinion. I can't wait to see what's next!

A challenging puzzle game that takes place in a typical 70s science fiction movie (almost).

There is really nothing much i can say about this game other than it's puzzles. the art and visuals are impressive and the puzzles are challening some are easy, others are obvious and there are of course the hard ones.

The replay value? well if you love challenging hard puzzle games this is the one to get.

I would not recommend it to an average gamer, But i do recommend this for the puzzle gamers.

I've been following a lot of new releases and this is one of few that caught my eye! The trailer looked pretty cool (I love space themed games) and the monsters looked interesting. I didn't know what to expect when I first played, but it turned out to be a pretty fun game :).

The game is a mix of puzzle solving and alien ♥♥♥ kicking =P! The puzzle solving is actually challenging and fun. If you're looking for a game to flex your brain a bit and get a few scares, then this is the game for you!

First Impressions:

Let me preface this by saying that I haven't spent a lot of time with the game, which is retrospect is exactly what the game expects you to do. What little I did play, I didn't really enjoy and often found myself frustrated. Without any sort of tutorial to guide me, I found myself stuck in the very first room for about twenty minutes just messing around with the various objects. Based on the trailers, I expected a FPS sci-fi game with an emphasis on the "S"...instead I discovered this game to be extremely puzzle heavy.

It's not that I don't enjoy puzzles, but the help system (TAB key) is absolutely useless. "I need to repair the door"...way to state the obvious! I longed for an escalating help system as featured in BTTF:TG that gave me the answers after so many hint requests. What's the point of having a difficulty setting if your puzzles are going to be that demanding regardless? That's not to say it won't be fun for some who have the time to devote to solving these puzzles, but it is clearly not for me (at least, at present).

I'm giving it a positive recommend because the setting and ambiance is indeed fairly good, but I would like to see options / mechanics to help out new/casual players who don't want to spend hours trying to solve complex puzzles. "Deadfall Adventures" incorporated multiple difficulty levels for the puzzles alone, for example. I grabbed this for cheap during a Bundle Stars sale (10 games for $4) so I'm not too miffed that I didn't enjoy this title. Since the game is Early Access, I reserve the right to change my opinion as development continues.

A weird little puzzle based game that reminds me of X-Files and some of those older semi-creepy scifi shows. I'm not normally a fan of puzzle games but the scenes are full of ambience and weird little details that kept me interested in exploring.

From the video I thought it was a mix of fps with puzzle elements but it is most definitely a puzzle gamer primarily in the vein of Myst/Riven .

+ Excellent weird creepy scifi atmosphere and details
+ Puzzles are a good balance to keep you looking around without being unbearable click fests to find the right pixel
+ Lots of details in the scenes and different objects and environment to interact with

If you like puzzles and/or unique creepy scifi settings, definitely this is worth checking out. After I got tired of the puzzles (just not my genre nothing wrong with the game), I went and watched some Let's Play videos because I liked the setting.

In my short time playing this, thought i'd write a review of sorts. Albedo: Eyes from Outer Space is one of the coolest and challenging 1st person games around. Outstanding graphics, sounds, and atmosphere. A homage to the classic sci-fi movies of old is an understatement. More of a realtime FP game in the style of the great text adventure based games of the late 70's early 80's. The Lurking Horror kinda rings a bell. Game mechanics that seem to be complex but do not, if you think with common sense.

I killed a giant eyed squid monster using a rat, vending machine and some candy. The order in which you do it, is up to you to figure out. That thing constantly bashing at the door until it finally broke through, i had to end it's miserable life. Onto the next room. A fire raging in some dreary, plumbers nightmare hallway. A fire was raging in the hallway probably caused from the monster thrashing about as it smelled my presence. Who am i in this game? A creature, a mortal, a robot? I don't know yet.

A leaking hose i spotted nearby a sink on the floor. Turned on the water, picked up the hose and put the flames out. Success. I filled a bucket with water and the water actually filled the bucket. Found a putrid melon sized eyeball amongst the waste. Dumped the water out and set the bucket down near a wall, took a few steps back and threw the eye into it. 2 points. Thought to myself "hey, i'll try for a 3pointer. Went a bit further back and away the eye went. Probably the most fun that eye ever seen. It bounced off the wall just right and into the bucket. Achievement unlocked. That was just the first 10 minutes of the game. It'll be a long journey, i have no idea what to expect.

It's details like that that set this game FAR apart most other FPS on the market. Very highly recommended. 10/10 would squash another one-eyed monstosity with a vending machine again

A really addictive game that promises fun and a lot of hours of gameplay! I really recommend it to everyone who wants to have a good time and discover the awesome storyline of Albedo: Eyes from Outer Space. The graphics and the music are really amazing too :D

If you are a fan of old-school point-and-click, this is the game for you. Puzzles are incredibly well designed, they will turn on your brain (have one is a requirement, sorry zombies or CoD players). The atmosphere is great and addicting, and exploring is really fun. If you look carefully you can find a lot of cool references (e.g. The Day of Tentacle).

And the developer is super-open to users' feedbacks, so the final version cannot be a worsening of this. Consider buying, if you want to be part of this :)

Albedo: Eyes from Outer Space is worth buying if you're looking for a first person puzzle game that feels like an old point and click adventure. Contrary to the videos, there is almost no combat in the game and the little that does exist doesn't involve a shotgun. The puzzles themselves mostly consist of figuring out the order of using items in a room, which means you can easily spend an hour figuring out how to do something that only takes a few seconds or minutes.

Great puzzle game! In some areas, almost to much of a stretch to solve - but only by a small margin - great concept, fun story and amazing classic sci fi core.

Now that's an intriguing game, I have never seen anything like that before - and so far it seems pretty well done and has a lot of potential!

I'll start the review with a few bad points (because there aren't many at all):
*I found the interface VERY uncomfortable. Played the game for almost 5 hours and I feel I still didn't get used to it, as even 5 hours and a couple of levels into the game I found myself still confused and not getting to the action I meant to do rigt away. I guess they tried to do something more intuitive that would fit the game's style but I really found the whole interactions and inventory business confusing.
*Story is almost non-existant. Perhaps in the full game? I sure so hope so..
*Another thing which doesn't really concern the game itself, but nore about wrong advertisement - the game seems like an 'action-adventure' type, with combats and killings etc... But I've barely encountered action sequences in the game itself. It's mostly just puzzles. Again, maybe in the finished game?

Anyway, even with these minor problems, and some more which you could expect from an unfinished product, this game is truly a gem. It's basically just a bunch of puzzles, but unlike many modern adventure games (or video games in general), it doesn't take the players as stupid fellas.
This game is pretty tough and challanging, but not in a terrible way, not in the "oh ♥♥♥♥ I'd have never figured that out!" way, but in a satisfying way. You have to truly pay attention to your surrounding, be sharp and creative, and if you manage to solve a riddle on your own it's usually very satisfying!
The other technical aspects of the game are also great, the horror setting is very bizzare, creepy and fills you with uneasiness.

Personally I quit the game for now, as it got too complicated for me, even on the easy level.
I still think the game is great, though, and am looking forward for the full product - hopefully more polished, wiith some more story, more hints and perhaps a walkthrough for the tough sections!
